Error installing new rails version. Failed to build gem native extension.

I am trying to build my first ruby on rails app using the following guide (http://ruby.railstutorial.org/chapters/a-demo-app#code-demo_gemfile_sqlite_version_redux) and have run into a few obstacles. The first, receiving errors when upgrading to the latest rails version 3.2.8. bash-3.2$ gem install rails Building native extensions. This could take a while... .NET not processing an XML file in IIS

We have 2 servers, 1 already configured with .net which works fine and a new one which appears to be configured the same but when I open an xml page in Internet Explorer it complains about the <% tag. We have IIS on win srvr 2003 SP2. The website is configured with .NET 1.1.4322. In ISAPI extensions have set the .XML extension to use c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v1.1.4322\aspnet_isapi.dll But the page: <property name="documentmaxage" value="0"/> <property name="documentmaxstale" value="0"/> <var name="m_Prompt_Path" /> <form id="InitVoiceXmlDoc"> <block> <assign name="m_Prompt_Path" expr=""<% Response.Write(Request.QueryString["m_Prompt_Path"]); %>""/> </block> </form> gives the error: The XML page cannot be displayed Cannot view XML input using XSL style sheet. Lin... &quo... We have the same config on another server which works fine. So are there other options apart from the ISAPI extensions that I need to look at. If I suffix the page .aspx, of course it works fine.

Unable to use OpenGL or install nVidia driver on openSUSE 12.2

I have an ASUS N76VZ laptop with 12.2 openSUSE and GeForce GT650M card. I found that KDE doesn't allow me to use OpenGL rendering. I tried to install nVidia's driver from script but once it writes the xorg.conf file I'm unable to boot desktop. How do I keep the keyword.url setting in firefox to default when you restart the browser without del

I am on the latest version of Firefox (not beta or anything like that) and currently my keyword.url is stuck on search.google.com (which I don't remember setting even though the about:config says it's a user setting. Can someone tell me how to set it back to default and keep it at default when I reset my browser? I do not want to delete prefs.js as I do not want to go thru setting up all the extension settings I have just to have my location bar search google (if this is the only way then I'll stick with searching from the search bar instead). I've checked all my extensions that may effect the location bar but could not find anything that says it would change the default search engine for this. I've also tried to open the prefs.js in wordpad or notepad but it just ends up freezing when trying to edit it at all (yes the browser is closed at the time). I also deleted the prefs-1.js (along with 2 others) that were older (after trying to rename those to prefs.js and see if this corrects it. It might have but had such old extension settings I went back to my latest prefs.js with this one issue instead of the issue of setting back up a ton of extensions. I can give any other info if needed, someone please help me fix this issue if possible.

How to make Firefox file associations consistent with Ubuntu file associations?

The gist of what I want to accomplish is to have Firefox understand the file associations I download without me having to manually map all of them myself. Gnome knows the file extensions, so I would have expected that Firefox could just use the already-known file mappings there to open the right stuff (as I presume Chrome does). But it doesn't. At least not for me, using Firefox 4, and not by default. When I click on a downloaded file right now, Firefox always has to ask me what application should be used to open the file. A handful of Google results tell me that I can reassociate my file extensions by deleting ~/.mozilla/firefox/[profile name]/mimeTypes.rdf, but while deleting that file does in fact result in a new mimeTypes file being generated, the new mimeTypes is just as barren as the old one had been. Based on the amount of unanswered Qs on the Googlesphere, I know this is a very common problem for Ubuntu users, but it seems to be one for which nobody has chimed in with a good solution. Maybe Superuser can finally be the panacea for us all?

Working with different PHP version at the same time, php_value extension_dir not working?

I need both PHP 5.4.7 and 5.3.17 running on Windows 7 x64 with Apache 2.2.23. This is my virtual host configuration: <VirtualHost *:80> DocumentRoot "C:/WAMP/Apache/htdocs/php54" ServerName php54.local PHPIniDir "C:/WAMP/PHP54" LoadModule php5_module "C:/WAMP/PHP54/php5apache2_2.dll" php_value extension_dir "C:/WAMP/PHP54/ext" <Directory "C:/WAMP/Apache/htdocs/php54"> Order allow,deny Allow from all </Directory> </VirtualHost> The PHPIniDir and LoadModule directives work fine and using phpinfo() inside my script prints the right PHP version. But I need to load extensions, and this is where it fails. php_value extension_dir should be C:/WAMP/PHP54/ext but it's (default one) C:/php. What I'm missing here? Why won't Google Chrome open Google Docs, and why is it slow with GMail?

OSX 10.6 Snow Leopard: Google Chrome works like a charm most of the time. I have many extensions installed, and I've tried disabling/re-enabling them one by one to find a culprit, with no luck. Here are the problems: (1) Chrome is slow to load GMail. I am fairly sure that clearing the cache alleviates this problem. But I can open Safari, type in the URL, and login to GMail in the time it sometimes takes Chrome to open the page. Shouldn't caching help the page load?!? And sometimes even after recent cache clears it still is slow to load..... Thoughts? (2) Chrome won't open Google Docs at all. Safari does. Again, I tried disabling extensions one-by-one, and I allow cookies and even third-party cookies. But I still am told it has a redirect loop. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

.htaccess non-www to www rule seems to work but the URL isn't changing in the address bar

On a joomla site, apache, shared hosting, I'm using next .htaccess rule: RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\. RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.%{HTTP_HOST}/$1 [R=301,L] The problem is that the browser's address bar text does not change from example.com to www.example.com. It seems the redirect actually works because all the links on the pages are changed to www. And after clicking on any link from there it always continues to have www added. The problem is the first page (no matter which one) that is loaded using browser's address bar - like example.com or example.com/random-page. Solved. The redirect actually works.

News Portal CMS

I am looking for a specific news portal CMS. I know all the major "general" CMS (like WordPress, Drupal or Joomla) and even the less known ones (like TYPO3, Expression Engine, Text Pattern or Concrete5). I'm already working with a Drupal distribution called OpenPublish and another WordPress installation to determine which would be better, but these are more of a Plan B. I would like to work directly with a CMS that was build exactly for this kind of tasks specific to a news / media portal. It doesn't matter if the CMS is commercial (however, I don't want to pay a monthly fee) or free, but I need to be able to use it on my own server / hosting and I need to be able to access it's source code (not to modify it, but to integrate it with future plugins / modules). If you know any CMS that qualifies for this job, please let me know. In the last few days I was all over Google but I couldn't anything worth mentioning.

Easy user management on html site?

I hope I'm not asking a question for which the answer is obvious...If I am, apologies. Within my html site (i.e. not Wordpress, Joomla, etc.) I want to be able to have a level of user management. That means that some pages I want to be only accessible to certain people with the correct username and password. What's the best way to do this? Are there any available scripts out there? Redirect from https://mydomain.com to http://mydomain.com

Many of my visitors have bookmarked my site already wtih https://mydomain.com. Under the bad advice of a programmer, I put my whole Joomla site under ssl. I do not sell anything or provide any member services. I asked him many times if it would slow my site down - he said it wouldn't. I knew it did, I've researched on this site and realized it does slow the site down because of no cache of the pages. Understood. Please, someone tell me how to get away from it now. I'm not sure how to approach this, should I add something to my htaccess or my main index.php file? I've looked all over the net, there is much advice for adding redirectives for going from http to https, but very few answers regarding the opposite of going from https to http. Thank you very much for your time. I appreciate it.

But it needs a lot of custom programming (and has a very strange voucher-system). Customer has to add the File into the basket and add the voucher at checkout. I want to skip that ;) Is there a Webshop (Or CMS + Plugin) which provides the things I need? (it could also be a CMS with a Storage/Folder Plugin (like joomla + K2) and a possibility to activate downloads via unique Codes.) Any ideas are highly appreciated :) Thanks in advance.

I am a Computer Science student (6th semester). I want to make a project and I have a team of 4 people (My friends). So we are 5 people and we have decided to make a "Web based file explorer". The project will be similar to THIS one. How should we start with this project? We guys don't know much about programming. I know Java a little and I am a RHCE so can handle the server and all such administrative stuffs. Since this is our first project so we guys have no idea how we'll make it? Constructive criticism for my bounce rate being so high [closed]

The bounce rate on my website's product pages is 80%, which is terrible. Could you offer any opinions on whether you consider the user experience to be bad, and how I could possibly improve it? Other pages, such as the home and category pages, have acceptable bounce rates, but the vast majority of my traffic lands on the product pages. I already tried removing some Google ads for a couple of days, but this didn't seem to help at all. I'm working on doing A/B testing at the moment. (It's tricky, as the site is based on a CMS - I custom coded the [Joomla] component, so hopefully I can get this testing working.)

CMS for Blog site

I would like to create a blog site with features like Engadget. The editor can upload blog and albums while users can comment. I know it's even easier to use blogspot but it's blocked in China. I have tried Joomla before. It seems a bit slow even after removing most of the modules and the memcache plugin doesn't help much either. Is there any other option? Do I need other plugins to run WordPress as blog?

Track url from Amazon S3 using Google Analytics

I couldn't find any decent pay per view video solutions for low budget clients. So I'm considering using a membership extension with Joomla and hosting the video with amazon S3. The only issue is that once someone has signed up to view or download the video if they have any web development experience they will be able to get the url of the video and freely publish it on the web. How can this be prevented? It looks like it can be done using IAM User Temporary Credentials - AWS SDK for PHP but the client would prefer not to have to pay someone to spend hours writing custom php code to get this to work. With Amazon s3 I could at least check the log files I guess to manually monitor the url but is there a way to track the url with Google Analytics? or is there a more elegant solution?

Starting small custom development company, type of niches to target?

This is kind of a new years thing for me as I want to be more entrepreneurial going forward with programming and this is kind of a general question for anyone who may share the same ambitions as me. I have experience with web programming and, although I work full time for a company doing programming, I have some freelance programmers that I work with / employ for small projects. I want to see about taking things to the next level as far as building a small company doing custom development. I'm just not sure how to figure out what niches to target as far as what type of apps to build as demos, etc. I was thinking mobile (maybe Android or Iphone) but am just curious if anyone has any advice / resources. A lot of "web development" seems to end up being just using a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress, for smaller sites, so I want to figure a way to steer clear of this crowd and find some opportunity with companies / entrepreneurs who actually need real programming development done to build apps. How important is to avoid name collisions between libraries belonging to different domains?

I have written a small open source Java library for facilitating conversions between different types of objects (in the style of Google's gson, but quite more general). It seems to me that a nice natural name for my library is JConverter, after browsing in the web to see if another library with the same name already exists, I found a library with the same name for Joomla. My concrete question is: How important is to avoid naming collisions when creating an open source library if an existing library with the chosen name already exists in a complete different domain ? (in my concrete case, these are libraries even implemented for different languages).

Would it be possible to build a client portal on Squarespace6?

I'm helping a family member set up a site which will need to include a secure client portal, providing access to documents and a simple database. I have been encouraging them to go with a more established, open source CSM like drupal or joomla, whose capability in this area is evident. However, they have a strong preference for Squarespace. Does any one know if it would be possible to accomplish this with the new developer platform for squarespace 6? I've spent well over an hour searching google, the squarespace site and stackexchange, but can't seem to find any clear answer to this question. I'm grateful for any insight you all can provide.

How serious/common are wordpress updating issues

I am currently deciding between a CMS (joomla OR wordpress )to dive deep into. I think I would go for wordpress, but the only thing thats holding me back are any potential issues with updating wordpress- that updating wordpress can break plugins, but is necessary because of security issues. How drastic are the changes in wordpress? say over a period of 2-3 years? from the perspective of someone intending to dive head first in its code. Should I fear regular updates breaking stuff ? Which CMS can I use for my project?

I have to build a new website for my client.. and he needs this stuff: A user generated content website.. where users can upload their own videos.. (i will use a video hosting platform with api like fliqz.com) I must manage a big user system.. where users can create their own "sub-users"... the site must manage paid subscriptions and payments through paypal.. and other payment gateways... So the question is.. i have to use a pre-built CMS and extend it.. or just a good framework? I've been thinking about joomla, drupal and expressionengine... It's not neccesary to use a open source cms... I've looking at drupal.. but is not as easy to understand and extend... Can anyone help me to make a good decision?

What is the feature that imports URL information into facebook and google+?

What I am trying to do. I want to be able to import heading, short description and an image into my website, just using a link. I am using Joomla but can switch to any CMS, or try to build an extension myself. The problem is I dont know where to look for example code, or what to look for. To me it doesnt seem like too difficult a process. Also, the code must be out there, with a little tweaking I can probably use someone elses, but I dont even know what to search for.

htaccess 301 redirect help needed

Due to some issues in my site many pages are visible as duplicate using : www.example.com/page.html?task=view but it's content is exactly same as www.example.com/page.html. One way is to use http 301 redirect from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html when anybody fetches page with arguments. But links like www.example.com/page.html?task=view will remain visible to outside world. Another way is canonicalization which I don't want to use as it is difficult to insert the tag in Joomla CMS. I want to hide www.example.com/page.html?task=view from external world. Is it possible to change the url from www.example.com/page.html?task=view to www.example.com/page.html ? I mean if there is href link of www.example.com/page.html?task=view in my web page, it should be visible to external world as without any arguments. This is different from using 301 to convert externally accessed page : www.example.com/page.html?task=view to without using arguments in .htaccess.
