• Java mail attachment not working on Tomcat

  Hello guys, I have an application which e-mails confirmations. The email part utilises Commons Mail API. • Silverlight Cream Monday WP7 App Review # 1

  I'm going to try something here... if it seems useful, I'll continue, if it doesn't, I'll stop... so give me feedback! There are *lots* of Apps in the WP7 Marketplace, and heaven help me, but the Marketplace sucks for finding stuff. I won't rehash what's already been said in the blogs, but I agree with one and all. I went out last Saturday to find 2 apps that I knew were released, and couldn't do so on my device. Even in the Zune app, it took quite a while to find them... ok, I'll back off a bit, because I just found out I can do 'Search' now if I know the name... I didn't think that was working before. So my thought is on Monday (like today), I will post a review of 5 apps/games I either use or have played with on my device. These are strictly my opinions, you understand, but hey... it's better than a poke in the eye with an iPhone! A few disclaimers:     Feel free to write me about your app and tell me about it. While it would be very cool to receive a whole bunch of xap files to review, at this point, for technical reasons, I'm unable to side-load my device. Since I plan on only doing this one day a week, and only 5, I may never get caught up, so if you send me some info, be patient. Re: games ... remember I'm old... I'm from the era of Colossal Cave and Zork. Duke-Nukem 2D and Captain Comic were awesome. I don't own an XBOX or any other game system, so take game reviews from my perspective -- who knows, it may be refreshing :) I won't pay for an app or game just to try it. If you expect me to test-drive your app, it's going to have to have a Free Trial. In this Issue:   Jingo! is the first app I bought, just to see what the experience was like. It's very much like a game we used to play in school in the Army in 1971 on paper we passed around. Sort of a cross between hangman and Mastermind, you try to figure out the hidden word in 5 tries. You get really good at 5-letter words after a while. I like this because you have to think, and you're not pressured by a clock Jingo! is by James Furdell and is $1.99 I reviewed René Schulte's Pictures Lab a while back, and have not changed my mind. This is an excellent app for playing with any photo on your device... one you've just taken, one you've synced from your PC, or one you've saved from email. I like this because you can get some cool effects for your photos, and it just works. Pictures Lab is by Schulte Software Development and is $1.99 Since I work as a consultant, and from home, I wanted something I could track my time with. I've test-driven all the contenders I could find so far on the phone, and so far I like ONTRACK! the best. If asked, I have some suggestions, but it's probably just the way I work or think. What I do like is I can tap a project to start/stop/restart a counter, and at the end of the day it shows me how much time I've been working. If there's a way to make an adjustment in case you forget to tap the counter, I don't know how to do it, and that's my biggest complaint. I like this because you can get a daily readout which you can also email as a spreadsheet. The daily results display is very good. ONTRACK! is by Qmino and is $2.99 Remember Item 4 above... I've been playing guitar for 48 years... obviously since before the invention of 'tuners', so I'm not as dependent upon these as some folks are. I've tried some in the past and have always felt I can do just as good by ear (I have perfect relative pitch). So, I gave this app by András Velvárt a dance just to see how it works, and it is surprisingly good. If you're used to one of the stage tuners this may take a little getting used to, but it does the job. The difference with this one is there is no real 'null' point inside which you can think your guitar is in tune. The soundwave stays visible on the device, and if it's moving to the right, your string is flat, if it's moving to the left, your string is sharp. Getting it exact might be tricky, but it is exact! If you need to rely on a tuner, this is a good choice in my opinion, exactly because of the sensitivity.. tune up with this and you're dead-on. Guitar Tuner is by Kinabalu Innovation Limited and is $0.99 Popper 2 is the WP7 version of a wildly popular game by Bill Reiss named Dr. Popper. You can get a trial, or you can now get a free lite version of the game. Popper 2 is a fast-paced bubble breaker game. I find it something fun to play when I just want to buzz out, but maybe the best review is that my daughter didn't want to give my phone back when I showed it to her, and always wants to grab my phone to play 'that game'.   I have started to develop a web app on google's app engine and i wish to make the static content on the site searchable on google. For example, my app is at http://ajakimov.appspot.com/ and on it there is only some random text like 'form bell road smear sky orange fan glass key'. When i google for 'form bell road smear' for example or the title of the site for that matter , i get no results - cant find the site. Does anyone know how to make a appengine site google-able?   I'm trying to use mikel gem mail on my 2.3.5 Rails App http://github.com/mikel/mail I have it working like this. I've made a MailComHelper, made a method like this : def self.welcome(user,password) @user = user m = Mail.new m.from = '[email protected]' m.to = @user.email m.subject = 'welcome' m.body = 'The body' m.delivery_method :sendmail m.deliver! end And it works, I receive the mail. But I wish I could use the old way of calling a view ( html.erb ) file and send that code has the body. I've read the documentation but haven't found a way to do it. Has anyone found a way to do it?

• Possible to access gdata api when using Java App Engine?

  I have a dilemma where I want to create an application that manipulates google contacts information. The problem comes down to the fact that Python only supports version 1.0 of the api whilst Java supports 3.0. I also want it to be web-based so I'm having a look at google app engine, but it seems that only the python version of app engine supports the import of gdata apis whilst java does not. So its either web based and version 1.0 of the api or non-web based and version 3.0 of the api. I actually need version 3.0 to get access to the extra fields provided by google contacts. So my question is, is there a way to get access to the gdata api under Google App Engine using Java? If not is there an ETA on when version 3.0 of the gdata api will be released for python? Cheers.

  So you want to know more about development for Window 8. Great! There are lots of reasons you should be excited about this. Since I don’t know why YOU are interested in this, I’ll make a list of reasons people can choose from. (as a side note: whenever I talk about Win8 development I am referring to the Metro Style / WinRt side of things. Apps for the ‘classic’ desktop side of Win8 on Intel are business as usual…) So… Why would you care about making an app for Windows 8? 1. It’s cool. Let’s not beat around the bush: if you like development for a hobby then you’ll love to work on this new platform. You can create apps in a relative short time (short time as in compared to writing a new CRM system) and that makes it great for a hobby product. 2. You’ll stand out. Hey, we all need an ego boost every now and then. We all need to feel special. So if you can manage to be one of the first to have you app in the Store then you’ll likely to be noticed. Just close your eyes for a moment and image you standing in a bar. It’s crowded, and then you casually say “Oh yeah, I just had my app certified and it’s in the Win8 store now”. People will stop talking, will offer you drinks and beautiful women / gorgeous man / furry creatures from Alpha Centauri (whatever your preferences are) will propose. Or maybe not. Anyway…. 3. Make some cash! IDC predicts there will be about 350,000,000 Windows 8 licenses sold in the next year. Think about that number. 350,000,000. And they all have access to the Store. Where you’re app will be. With one little click they can select it, download and somehow magically $1.00 or $2.00 from their bank account is transferred to yours. Now, I am not saying that all of those people will download and buy your app but what if only 1% of them did? Remember: there aren’t that many apps available yet….. 4. Learn. Creating new small apps is a great way to learn new stuff. Yes, you could read about it (on this blog for instance) but the only way to learn something is to do it. So be prepared for the future and learn something new by doing it.Write an app! Now! 5. The biggie (for me at least): it’s fun. Even if you remove the points above it’s still fun to write for these devices and this platform. Now some of you will say : “But why not write a great app for IOS or Android?” I think this is a valid question. Of course the novelty of the platform wears out and points 2 and 3 from above list will not be as relevant as it is today. But still 1 4 and 5 remain. And don’t forget: if you already work on the Microsoft platform it’s not that hard to learn this new Win8 stuff. If you have done some XAML development (be it WPF or Silverlight) you are almost there in becoming a good Win8 developer. So you’ll be more productive much sooner than when you have to learn Objective C or Java. Even if you’re a HTML / Javascript developer (I say developer here, not designer) you’ll be up to speed on Win8 development pretty soon. Yes, you, that funky Web Developer who lives and breathes HTML5, CSS3 and JavaScript / Node.Js / JQuery: you too can be a Win8 developer. A first class Win8 developer! So.. Download the stuff you need from http://dev.windows.com install Windows 8 and Visual Studio 12 and by the time you’re ready I’ll be working on the next article: how to do all this? Happy coding!

  Hi all, I'm currently using Microsoft CRM4 Mail merge function, which stores Word files as XML files inside CRM. My client has a requirement to prompt the user for more information (not found in CRM) upon mail merging. Previously, we used the Word 'FILLIN' commands, but it does not work with CRM mail merge as it only prompts the user before printing, not upon opening a Word file. I attempted using Macros, but can't seem to save macros to Microsoft Word 2003 XML file format. My questions: 1. Is there any way to get 'FILLIN' to prompt the user upon opening the mail merged file? 2. Can I store macros in Word 2003 XML file format? 3. Any other way around it, that involves merging CRM records with a Word file, and prompting the user for more information not already found in CRM? Many thanks for your help, AR

  This question possibly doesn't belong here. We'll see how the answers pan out, if this doesn't belong here please move it to where it belongs. I'm following the getting started guide for Google App Engine, and I'm seeing what it can and can't do. Basically, I'm seeing it's very similar to an MVC pattern. You create your model, then create a View that uses that Model to display information. Not only that, but it uses a controller of some kind in this fashion: application = webapp.WSGIApplication( [('/', MainPage)], debug=True) My question is, why would you use this Google App Engine if it's the same as using a number of other MVC frameworks? Is the only benefit you gain the load balancing being handled by Google automagically? What is a good example of something you would need the App Engine for? I'm trying to learn, so thanks for the discussion.

  Hello app engineers! I'm on an app engine project where I'd like to put in a link to a Javascript test runner that I'd like to only exist when running the development server. I've made some experiments on a local shell with configuration loaded using the technique found in NoseGAE versus live on the 'App Engine Console' [1] and it looks to me like a distinction btw real instance and dev server is the presence of the module google.appengine.tools. • Python wrapper for Google Maps making Google App Engine crash?

  I am currently trying to build a web app using Google App Engine that will involve using the Google Maps API. Since I am coding in python, I tried importing the python wrapper for Google Maps (found here); however, performing the import will cause my web app to crash. Are there any suggestions for how I can fix this problem? I'm guessing the crash might have something to do with the fact that I need to incorporate the google maps python wrapper into my application, but how do I go about doing that? Thanks!
