  I purchased a copy of MS Office through Microsoft Home Use Program (HUP) It basically allows you get a very cheap copy for home use if your employer owns the licence. My question is: Can I install it on more than one PC/laptop at home?   I have two Dell boxes with two ethernet ports a piece. I have a cable directly connecting two of these ports, creating a tiny LAN with 10.3.3.x addresses. The other port on each box is hooked up to a switch and has a DHCP-supplied address to talk to the outside world. I've noticed that when scp'ing large files from one box to the other over the private LAN, the transfers sometimes stall. It appears that any other network activity on either box will cause the transfer to resume. Wake-on-LAN is disabled on all interfaces according to ethtool. What else could be causing these stalled transfers?

• Best way to split LAN computers on two WANs (not load balancing)

  What is the best way to split the computers of a LAN (about 50 computers) to go on two WANs, depending on the computers' IP address or computers' configuration (gateway). I'm not looking for load-balancing, I need to be able to route which computer uses which Internet connection. A solution would be to rewire the old office to split the two distinct groups that need to use two different Internet connections but I'm not sure it's worth it at the moment. I have a pfSense router configured with the LAN (DHCP), WAN1 and WAN2. I also have the IP addresses (and ability to configure) the next router on WAN1 and the one on WAN2. What would you suggest? Routing based on IP addresses ranges? Different gateways? VLANs would be difficult for the same reason as to why rewire is a bit complicated. Thanks!

• Secure copying (file transfer) between two Linux servers in the same datacenter (Linode)

  I have two Linodes in the same data center. I want to copy files from one to the other each night or on demand (for about the next month, until this project is finished). So I'm thinking about using rsync. My question is how do I set up the two Linode servers to communicate via private IP addresses securely? Both servers are SSH hardened, they use denyhosts and have a fairly restrictive iptables setup. I know I need to first assign private IP addresses to each server, then configure static networking according to this guide. What is next? What SSH or iptables settings are needed to allow these two servers to communicate? What further info do I need to supply in this question? I'm looking for a basic step-by-step guide for how to do this.

• Join multiple filesystems (on multiple computers) into one big volume

  Scenario: Have 10 computers, each have 12x2TB HDDs (currently) in raidZ2 (10+2) configuration, so, in the each computer i have one approx. 20TB volume. Now, need those 10 separate computers (separate raid groups) join into one big volume. What is the recommended solution? I'm thinking about the FCoE (10GB ethernet). So, buying into each computer FCoE (10GB ethernet card) and - what need more on the hardware side? (probably another computer, FCoE switch? like Cisco Nexus?) The main question is: what need to install and configure on each computer? Currently they have freebsd/raidz2, but it is possible change it into Linux/Solaris if needed. Any helpful resource what talking about how to build a big volumes from smaller raid-groups (on the software side) is very welcomed. So, what OS, what filesystem, what software - etc. In short: want get one approx. 200TB storage (in one filesystem) from already existing computers/storage. Don't need fast writes, but need good performance on reading data. (as a big fileserver), what will works transparently, so when storing data don't want care about onto what computer the data goes. (e.g. not 10 mountpoints - but one big logical filesystem). Thanks.

  Hi, I have a home networking question. I have two DLINK wireless/wired routers in my house, connected to the Internet ISP. There are a 2 computers on each of the two networks. Network1: has 192.168.0.0 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10, with COMP1 having a fixed IP of 162.168.0.1 Network2: has 192.168.0.100 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.101 - 192.168.0.110 with COMP2 having a static IP of 162.168.0.101, a WIRELESS printer on 192.168.0.102 Both routers have a netmask of 255.255.255.0 My need is to connect the two routers, so that I can Remote desktop for COMP1 to COMP2 and viceversa, and COMP1 to connect to the wireless printer on Network2. can anyone help to set this up so that the both networks can talk to each other. • Having to Toggle Between Two Sets of Video Drivers

  So, I've got a Win7 64-bit gaming PC with GTX 260's. Recently, StarCraft 2 had an issue with flickering, which NVidia fixed with a new set of drivers. However, these new drivers induce unplayable graphical errors with Neverwinter Nights 2, something me and my friends still play from time to time. I am seeking advice on the "best" way to rectify this situation, to be able to switch between two driver releases, without compromising the stability of my system (if Windows stability isn't an oxymoron). I'm wondering if Windows 7 is structured in such a way that I can constantly reinstall these two sets of drivers back and forth overtop each other, possibly six or eight times a day, without very quickly driving myself to reformat to maintain that "just like new" performance. I'm loathe to have to reformat the drive and maintain two copies of the operating system, but I'll do it if I have to.

  I recently ripped my DVD collection to play them on my media center PC, and several of them are two-disc movies (i.e. The Lord of the Rings). Since I ripped each DVD individually, that gives me two video files for some movies. I am using Ubuntu Linux - how can I concatenate these two MP4/H.264 videos into a single MP4 video file? Preferably from the command line, and without re-encoding everything during the process (although I can try figuring out a video editor like Pitivi if that's the only solution.)

• Adjusting color on one monitor in Nvidia Surround

  I'm currently running three 2560x1440 screens using Nvidia Surround. Two monitors are Yamakasi Catleaps (cheap Korean jobs) and the third is the Achievia Shimian (also Korean). The Catleaps have great color reproduction, however the Shimian is exceptionally blue tinted. With normal monitors the required correction would require minimal effort to accomplish. But these Korean monitors do not have hardware controls to do it. For those who are unfamiliar, Nvidia Surround basically takes all three monitors and makes one big "monitor" out of all of them (Xinerama for GNU/Linux folk), at a resolution of 7680x1440 in my situation. Therefore, adjusting the color profile in the Nvidia control panel changes the settings for ALL of the monitors simultaneously. Thus, I am looking for some software to adjust the Shimian (perhaps by just selecting the pixels that that monitor encompasses). Does anyone know of such a program?

• Mutliple VMs for Tomcat cluster vs Multiple Tomcat instances on one physical box

  I'm working on a project that will be implemented into production using a cluster of Apache Tomcat instances and I'm looking for the best Hardware/OS solutions and VMs have come up as one option. I have run ESXi/ESX instances before for development and testing, but I'm curious for a hosting environment if having multiple VMs is actually worse than just configuring a server to host multiple instances of Tomcat. These are my guesses: Pros for VMWare Easier Maintenance/Backup for individual VMs (VMWare makes this easy) Can remote login to individual VMs without having to give host access (security?) Easier way to re-purpose machine for OS/Hardware changes Pros for running on one Physical Machine Overhead of only one OS (also no VMWare footprint) Update OS/security changes once One less administrative layer (No VM expertise required) I'm curious if anyone has any other ideas about what the benefits would be for either option.

• Two VGA monitors on Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 Desktop

  I recently bought a Lenovo IdeaCentre H520 computer and two VGA LED monitors. This particular PC has a dedicated NVIDIA Geforce GT630 video card and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 2500 video card. Both cards have VGA out. The Geforce card also has a HDMI out. I have installed Windows 8 and I can't seem to use both cards. I have connected both monitors, one to the VGA out of the Geforce card and one to the VGA out of the integrated card. I looked through the BIOS options for Video and I can only select the dedicated one, the integrate one or the Auto option. This kinda sucks. I was wondering what kind of options I have available. I have a VGA female to DVI A male adaptor, I was wondering if it could work if I can hook it to a DVI A female to HDMI male adaptor and plug one monitor into the VGA out of the Geforce video card and the other through both adapters to the HDMI out. Any chance this could work? I was looking online for a VGA to HDMI live cable but it's kind of expensive.

  Hello, I have some work to do in a small office. This office has two separate Internet connections. One is a kind of DSL line and connected through the Internet sharing router (DHCP). One is a leased line with public IP adresses (No DHCP). This leased line provide only 30 IP addresses and the gateway is provided by the ISP. Some workers use private IP provided by the router, some workers use manually setup public IP. There is a Windows 2008 R2 server with two NICs, connected to each lines. I want to connect/merge(?)/bridge(?) two subnet with this server so that users from the different subnet can access each other. How can I accomplish this? Something like, add gateway function to this server and public IP users change the gateway to point this server.. It it possible ? Sorry for my rambling. Thanks in advance.

  I've got two scripts in cron set to run every two minutes: */2 -- the thing is, they're out of step. One runs at 1,3,5,7,9 minutes, etc. and the other at 0,2,4,6,8. This is not a mission-critical problem, but means I've got two status reports, one a bit stale compared to the other. What does cron do exactly? Run the first one in crontab document order, waiting till it's finished to run the second one? Is there any way I can make the run at the same time, or as close as possible?

  I just setup virtual machines on one hardware with Vagrant (this is just a test environment, not production!). I want to use a Puppet to configure them and next try to setup OpenStack. I am not sure If I am understanding how this should look at the end. Even after setting the subtitle offset one would have to go on increasing it as the movie proceeds. • Three formats? Why?

  I needed to download the Ruby Source recently from here and it says, "available in three formats" which are .tar.bz2, .tar.gz and .zip. Is there any reason that we need all three formats? At least on Linux and OSX I can do any of the three easily. On Windows, only zip is built-in, I think. Is there anything behind these preferences or is this just a religious battle?

• Combine two or more tables into a third separate table

  Hi community, I have an excel workbook that has three pivot tables in it. What I am wanting to do is create a fourth table that combines the data from all three of the other tables. Essentially I want to concatenate the tables together but still preserve the source tables. Another criteria of what I am wanting to do is if I add a row to any of the source tables it must update the combined table and it must work with x amount of rows where x could be any size. I know I am asking a lot but I would be so grateful if I could get some help working this out. I am comfortable with using either VBA or native excel to solve this. If you guys need examples I will be happy to upload some.

• Difference between all servers in one cluster and more than one cluster with servers?

  Not sure I understand what´s the difference or how it works when servers a running in one cluster or if there are more than one clusters with servers in it - regard High availability & Load Balancing. For me they are somehow the same, there is not really a big difference. Let´s make a simple example: 2 Servers in 1 Cluster 2 Clusters with each 1 Server - 1. If one Server failure, the other one is able to continue the work. The same for Load Balancing, these two Servers are able to balance the work together. - 2. The same thing! If one Server failure... The only thing that could be a problem with point 1. is if the Cluster fails (then both of the Server are dead). But is this even possible? I was reading stuff about clustering and high availability but I think I do not get this really. Probably I did not really understand how a cluster is working. Are these 2 points with 1 Cluster and 2 Clusters somehow the same or are there really some big differences? What should I know about it? Thank you

• netbook intel GMA 3150 external monitor 1920x1080 flicker problem

  Dear all, i recently purchased a acer netbook (apsire one d260). It runs flawlessly. Yesterday I bought a samsung 23" TFT with a native resolution of 1920x1080. According to the information found in the internet and my local computer dealer, the intel chipset can handle the native resolution of the monitor. However, this is only partly the case. I use the VGA cabel to connect, the monitor instantly switches to the native resolution and now the problem: Occasionaly, especially the first 2 hours after booting up, I have a flickering all over the screen, sometimes the entire screen is shaking and spinning around like crazy. I figured out, that lowering the resolution avoids the flicker but this helps only for some time. I can rule out that it's the monitor's problem since I found no issues with another notebook. Right now, I have no problems with the netbook, for about 30 minutes I didn't experience any issues... But I don't know for how long, it occurs without warning :-) I'm worried that if I would bring the netbook back to the dealer and explain my problem, after testing it on an external screen in the local shop, everything works just fine... And I won't get helped with the problem because I can't prove it. (I'm currently in Thailand and over here, customer service is nothing like back home in Germany) What can I do? Is this a driver related issue? (I installed the latest GPU driver) Is it because of the VGA cable? (But why does it work sometimes without any problems and with no issues on the other notebook) I monitored the GPU/CPU temperature, nothing changes really over time..Can it simply be a faulty GPU and is a replacement justifiable? I'm really stressed now because for the time I'm writing, the flickering didn't occur...but for sure, soon or later it will happen again.. I Forgot to mention, the problem also happens if the netbook runs on battery, unplugged. So the only hardware that is plugged is the TFT screen. ...........and here it comes again, flickering has just begun. NEED HELP!   In case it matters: OS: Ubuntu 10.04 SSH: OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu5 I'd like one SSH config file to include another one. The use case would be to define whatever I want in my default .ssh/config file and then pre-pend a couple of extra things in a separate file (e.g. ~/.ssh/foo.config). I want the second file to incorporate the first one, though, so I don't have to duplicate everything in the first one. Is that doable? Thanks!

• Dynamically changing one-node Cassandra cluster to two nodes

  So I have an application that will be very dormant most of the time but will need high-bursting a few days out of the month. Since we are deploying on EC2 I would like to keep only one Cassandra server up most of the time and then on burst days I want to bring one more server up (with more RAM and CPU than the first) to help serve the load. What is the best way to do this? Should I take a different approach? Some notes about what I plan to do: Bring the node up and repair it immediately After the burst time is over decommission the powerful node Use the always-on server as the seed node My main question is how to get the nodes to share all the data since I want a replication factor of 2 (so both nodes have all the data) but that won't work while there is only one server. Should I bring up 2 extra servers instead of just one?

• Moving an "all-in-one" PC when turned on/off

  I have an "all-in-one" pc. I know that moving a pc when it is switched on is harmful to the hardware components. What I would like to know is if the same applies to "all-in-one" pc's and if the same applies to regularly moving it from one side of the room to the other when it is turned off! The reason for the question is that I work on one desk during the day, and in the evening move it to the couch so I can do other stuff while watching TV or something. I always turn it off before the move, but somebody told me that I can be damaging the machine by doing so. Can anybody shed some light on this? Many thanks

• How can one one-handed ease working in Emacs?

  My right hand is temporarily immobilized. I would like to do some minor work in Emacs, mostly in Org-mode, but also some in AUCTeX. Is there some way to ease one-handed work in Emacs such as some mode or particular work flow? For instance I noticed pressing C-x u is easier than C-_ for undoing and that it is easier to mark text with methods involving C-Space than with combinations of S- and movement commands. I have found http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2391805/how-can-i-remain-productive-with-one-hand-completely-immobilized but that is not what I am asking for. I want to ease whatever little time spent one-handed in Emacs and this is also interesting for situations where there is no injury involved, such as when one hand is occupied. I also do realize I should avoid unnecessary strain.
