• Advanced example-driven C book with a lot of code.

  Hello, I am looking for a book on advanced C programming that: Teaches how to effectively express one's solution in C when one already knows the language in depth. Shows some common design idioms expressed in C, like encapsulation, modularity and that kind of thing. Is example-driven with a lot of good-quality code. I already know the language itself so books like otherwise wonderful "Expert C Programming" by Peter van der Linden is not really what i am looking for. What i need is a book on how to express my design in C, what are the common idioms, best practices, etc. I would also like to note that i am primarily interested in C, not C++, C#, Objective-C or any other languages inspired by C-like syntax.   I have an SQLite table used by Core Data with the following elements: Name: John LastName: Foobar Age: 23 Name: Bob LastName: Baz Age: 37 Name: Peter LastName: Fooqux Age: 32 Name: John LastName: Bar Age: 29 Those are all in a to-many relationship from another object "Company". I need to query the database and retrieve all Company objects with employees called "John" but whose last name does NOT contain "Foo". I did go as far as to make the following predicate: [NSPredicate predicateWithFormat:@"ANY employee.name = 'John'"]; How do I get to filter only by companies whose Johns don't have "Foo" in their last names?

  I have data related as follows: A table of Houses A table of Boxes (with an FK back into Houses) A table of Things_in_boxes (with an FK back to Boxes) A table of Owners (with an FK back into Houses) In a nutshell, a House has many Boxes, and each Box has many Things in it. In addition, each House has many Owners. If I know two Owners (say Peter and Paul), how can I list all the Things that are in the Boxes that are in the Houses owned by these guys? Also, I'd like to master this SQL stuff. Can anyone recommend a good book/resource? (I'm using MySQL). Thanks!

• Working with multiple GIT severs

  Hello, I have a question. Is it possible to set up a system so that you have a private GIT server that you host, which automatically syncs with a remote one, hosted by a site like Sourceforge, and then you can commit your local to the private GIT server, and then when you have to merge the changes from your private wip branches that are on your private GIT over to the master/branch/tag from the public GIT, and then push the change to the public GIT? I ask this because I have a lot of personal work I would like to get working before putting it up for the public to see, and I'm shifting between several computers/operating systems in the process. If this is not possible in standard GIT, are there any other options that would allow me to do this? Thanks, Peter

• Is it possible to use instanceof when passing objects between Threads?

  I've run into an issue where instanceof works, and then it doesn't. Going into details is difficult, but I think this might be the problem: Reading this: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=40229 (search for Thread.currentThread), it seems to imply that, even if the two objects are the same class, if you pass them between threads with different class loaders, instanceof (and isAssignableFrom) might still fail. This certainly would explain the behavior I'm having, but I was wondering if anyone could verify it? (I wish the article linked at the beginning of the discussion was still available, but it doesn't seem like it is.) Thanks, Peter

The keys (key names) can be disregarded: [24, 23, 33, 12, 31] The order of the values is NOT important! One solution (obviously) would be do have a function that takes the values and puts them into an array: var arr = valuesToArray(obj); I will accept such a function as the answer. However, I would be more pleased if there would be an API function (ECMAScript, jQuery, browser-specific, ...) that could do this. Is there such a thing?

All to stem the flow of misinformation. All involved please accept my personal thanks for an absolutely awesome job. I had the priviledge of watching the 'prep' on Wednesday afternoon, and was blown away the first time I saw the 3D demo... and have been blown away every time I've seen it since. Not to mention all the other goodness in Silverlight 5. Yes I hit 1000 on my blog, but more importantly, all of you are blogging and using Silverlight, and Microsoft hit one completely out of the park... no... they knocked it out of the neighborhood with the Firestarter. It was amazing to be there for it, and it will be awesome to use the new bits as we get them. Keep reading, there's tons more to come with Silverlight and SilverlightCream following along behind. • Eclipse - How can I change a 'Project Facet' from Tomcat 6 to Tomcat 5.5?

  (Eclipse 3.4, Ganymede) I have an existing Dynamic Web Application project in Eclipse. When I created the project, I specified 'Default configuration for Apache Tomcat v6' under the 'Configuration' drop down. It's a month or 2 down the line, and I would now like to change the configuration to Tomcat 'v5.5'. (This will be the version of Tomcat on the production server.) I have tried the following steps (without success): I selected Targeted Runtimes under the Project Properties The Tomcat v5.5 option was disabled and The UI displayed this message: If the runtime you want to select is not displayed or is disabled you may need to uninstall one or more of the currently installed project facets. I then clicked on the Uninstall Facets... link. Under the Runtimes tab, only Tomcat 6 displayed. For Dynamic Web Module, I selected version 2.4 in place of 2.5. Under the Runtimes tab, Tomcat 5.5 now displayed. However, the UI now displayed this message: Cannot change version of project facet Dynamic Web Module to 2.4. The Finish button was disabled - so I reached a dead-end. I CAN successfully create a NEW Project with a Tomcat v5.5 configuration. For some reason, though, it will not let me downgrade' an existing Project. As a work-around, I created a new Project and copied the source files from the old Project. Nonetheless, the work-around was fairly painful and somewhat clumsy. Can anyone explain how I can 'downgrade' the Project configuration from 'Tomcat 6' to 'Tomcat 5'? Or perhaps shed some light on why this happened? Thanks Pete

  Hello, I've started to read the book "Code Craft" by Pete Goodliffe. The fourth chapter is about instruments that developer uses during his daily work; this chapter made me to review my work and I've seriously decided to make it easier with fully personalized IDE. Eclipse IDE is what I've started my learning from... I've read documentation and found that it's really easy to do tasks routine from Eclipse. We are using Mantis for tracking tasks and it was great surprise for me to find out Mantis Connector for Mylyn. Also I was pretty glad to see SVN client integrated into Eclipse IDE. Also I've found UML2 tool for Eclipse, but was disappointed because there is no any graphic interface for building diagramms. (Or, maybe, I'm was searching in wrong place?) What useful plugins do you use in your daily work? How do you use Eclipse for collaboration in your team? Do you have any links about intergration Eclipse IDE experience in dev. team? Thank you!

• WordPerfect programmers refusing to use anything but assembler

  There is a version (popularised by Joel Spolsky) attributing the demise of WordPerfect to a refusal of its programmers to use anything but assembler that led to delay of the first WPwin release and as result eventually to losing the all important battle with Microsoft. There are a few references to programming work being done using assembler in the autobiographical book "Almost Perfect" by W. E. Pete Peterson who used to have a major influence at running the corporation. But these references go back to early 80's when WordPerfect was trying to gain a significant market share by defeating WordStar and not early nineties when the battle with MS took place. I am looking for a second independent source to confirm the assumption. Maybe someone who worked for WordPerfect Corporation at a time, who was close to the company, or had a chance to see the source could clarify the issue. Your help is much appreciated, thanks! Please note that this question is not about any other theories or reasons behind WordPerfect demise. I really just need to clarify whether they used assembler as a primary language for WPwin and (as a bonus really) whether there were discussions held within the corporation about assembler being the right choice. Concisely: Did WPCorp use assembler as a primary language for WPwin? Were discussions held at a time amongst WP Corp staff about assembler being the right choice (was it management or programmers decision)?

  I have a class object that stores some properties that are lists of other objects. Each of the items in the list has an identifier that can be accessed with the id property. I'd like to be able to read and write from these lists but also be able to access a dictionary keyed by their identifier. Let me illustrate with an example: class Child(object): def __init__(self, id, name): self.id = id self.name = name class Teacher(object): def __init__(self, id, name): self.id = id self.name = name class Classroom(object): def __init__(self, children, teachers): self.children = children self.teachers = teachers classroom = Classroom([Child('389','pete')], [Teacher('829','bob')]) This is a silly example, but it illustrates what I'm trying to do. I'd like to be able to interact with the classroom object like this: #access like a list print classroom.children[0] #append like it's a list classroom.children.append(Child('2344','joe')) #delete from like it's a list classroom.children.pop(0) But I'd also like to be able to access it like it's a dictionary, and the dictionary should be automatically updated when I modify the list: #access like a dict print classroom.childrenById['389'] I realize I could just make it a dict, but I want to avoid code like this: classroom.childrendict[child.id] = child I also might have several of these properties, so I don't want to add functions like addChild, which feels very un-pythonic anyway. Is there a way to somehow subclass dict and/or list and provide all of these functions easily with my class's properties? I'd also like to avoid as much code as possible.

• Developer’s Life – Every Developer is a Spiderman

  I have to admit, Spiderman is my favorite superhero.  The most recent movie recently was released in theaters, so it has been at the front of my mind for some time. Spiderman was my favorite superhero even before the latest movie came out, but of course I took my whole family to see the movie as soon as I could!  Every one of us loved it, including my daughter.  We all left the movie thinking how great it would be to be Spiderman.  So, with that in mind, I started thinking about how we are like Spiderman in our everyday lives, especially developers. Let me list some of the reasons why I think every developer is a Spiderman. We have special powers, just like a superhero.  There is a reason that when there are problems or emergencies, we get called in, just like a superhero!  Our powers might not be the ability to swing through skyscrapers on a web, our powers are our debugging abilities, but there are still similarities! Spiderman never gives up.  He might not be the strongest superhero, and the ability to shoot web from your wrists is a pretty cool power, it’s not as impressive as being able to fly, or be invisible, or turn into a hulking green monster.  Developers are also human.  We have cool abilities, but our true strength lies in our willingness to work hard, find solutions, and go above and beyond to solve problems. Spiderman and developers have “spidey sense.”  This is sort of a joke in the comics and movies as well – that Spiderman can just tell when something is about to go wrong, or when a villain is just around the corner.  Developers also have a spidey sense about when a server is about to crash (usually at midnight on a Saturday). Spiderman makes a great superhero because he doesn’t look like one.  Clark Kent is probably fooling no one, hiding his superhero persona behind glasses.  But Peter Parker actually does blend in.  Great developers also blend in.  When they do their job right, no one knows they were there at all. “With great power comes great responsibility.”  There is a joke about developers (sometimes we even tell the jokes) about how if they are unhappy, the server or databases might mysteriously develop problems.  The truth is, very few developers would do something to harm a company’s computer system – they take their job very seriously.  It is a big responsibility. These are just a few of the reasons why I love Spiderman, why I love being a developer, and why I think developers are the greatest.  Let me know other reasons you love Spiderman and developers, or if you can shoot webs from your wrists – I might have a job for you.   JavaFX Sessions Abound JavaFX had a big presence at Devoxx 2011 as witnessed by the number of sessions this year given by leading JavaFX movers and shakers.     “JavaFX 2.0 -- A Java Developer's Guide” by Java Champions Stephen Chin and Peter Pilgrim     “JavaFX 2.0 Hands On” by Jasper Potts and Richard Bair     “Animation Bringing your User Interfaces to Life” by Michael Heinrichs and John Yoong (JavaFX development team)     “Complete Guide to Writing Custom Bindings in JavaFX 2.0” by Michael Heinrichs (JavaFX development team)     “Java Rich Clients with JavaFX 2.0” by Jasper Potts and Richard Bair     “JavaFX Properties & Bindings for Experts” (and those who want to become experts) by Michael Heinrichs (JavaFX development team)     “JavaFX Under the Hood” by Richard Bair     “JavaFX Open Mic” with Jasper Potts and Richard Bair With the release of JavaFX 2.0 and Oracle’s move towards an open development model with an open bug database already created, it’s a great time for developers to take the JavaFX plunge. One Devoxx attendee, Mark Stephens, a developer at IDRsolutions blogged about a problem he was having setting up JavaFX on NetBeans to work on his Mac. He wrote: “I’ve tried desperate measures (I even read and reread the instructions) but it did not help. Luckily, I am at Devoxx at the moment and there seem to be a lot of JavaFX gurus here (and it is running on all their Macs). So I asked them… It turns out that sometimes the software does not automatically pickup the settings like it should do if you give it the JavaFX SDK path. The solution is actually really simple (isn’t it always once you know). Enter these values manually and it will work.” He simply entered certain values and his problem was solved. He thanked Java Champion Stephen Chin, “for a great talk at Devoxx and putting me out of my misery.” JavaFX in Java Magazine Over in the November/December 2011 issue of Java Magazine, Oracle’s Simon Ritter, well known for his creative Java inventions at JavaOne, has an article up titled “JavaFX and Swing Integration” in which he shows developers how to use the power of JavaFX to migrate Swing interfaces to JavaFX. The consensus among JavaFX experts is that JavaFX is the next step in the evolution of Java as a rich client platform. In the same issue Java Champion and JavaFX maven James Weaver has an article, “Using Transitions for Animation in JavaFX 2.0”. In addition, Oracle’s Vice President of Java Client Development, Nandini Ramani, provides the keys to unlock the mysteries of JavaFX 2.0 in her Java Magazine interview. Look for the JavaFX community to grow and flourish in coming years.
