  StackOverflow has been a boon for increasing programming knowledge by allowing developers to ask for help and knowledge related to programming. Oftentimes these questions boil down to: This code is broken, fix it I don't know how to do this Is this the best approach (hard question to answer on StackExchange, but democratic) Oftentimes, however, these questions are discussed at a very high level. "I use web services with a proxy client to ..." But, as Grady Booch is fond of saying "the Truth is raw, naked, running code". Those high level descriptions can be accomplished in any ways. Programming is an Art, and there are an infinite number of different ways to do things. But some are better than others. A site devoted to Q&A can help increase knowledge...a site devoted to critique of code can help elevate standards and result in higher quality knowledge. By upvoting the most elegant ways to solve a short, concise problem statement, or just looking at a piece of code and saying "this is ugly, how can we fix it?" we can increase community participation in discussions about the substantive details of an approach: "is my commenting clear? "Is this 3 nested for-loops with a continue that breaks in a special case a good way of building an object?" "Does this extremely generic and polymorphic inheritance hierarchy have issues?") Code is an art/craft and science/engineering artifact. Doesn't it deserve the same type of review treatment as a painting and an experiment? For praising those that provide that moment of zen when looking at exceptionally good code that makes you believe in a better tomorrow, and panning those whose offal is so offensive that were you to meet them on the job you'd say "YOU! GET OUT!!!" Hence, CodeCritics. A collaborative critiquing platform in the style of StackOverflow focused solely on critiquing code that can act as a collaborative code review and assist in the discovery of Design Patterns.

• Configuring Backup Exec 2012 using USB hard drives as media

  I have found some information on this but have not found the exact answers to these questions. Background I have installed backup exec 2012 (with agents for databases) I have configured a storage pool, with 2 USB drives (1TB) The backups are configured to backup to one of the 2 drives (depending on which one is connected) I have 2 questions: How do I get Backup Exec to tell me which disk to insert? I have used tapes before and it told me then which tape to use? I was hoping this was available for disks too. (Whilst there are only 2 at the moment, there will be more). And then how do I get Backup Exec to delete old backups when the disk if full.

I want to buy an outlet computer with Windows 7 Home Premium 32, but I would rather have Windows Home Premium 64. Can I use the license I am getting with the outlet laptop to do a clean install of the 64bit version. I know I can't upgrade, I want to do this first thing out of the box when I get the computer. It seems like it is possible, according to the answer.microsoft.com the key will work for 64bit or 32bit.

• iStack for iPad

  The below image is the current, and hopefully final, look of the front screen, the app will remember which stack site you have chosen so the user will only see this screen the first time, but they can always go back and change it. The red bar is only there when a new site is added (the StackOverflow is just a test as no site has been added since I implemented this) and can be gotten rid of by tapping the X on the right side (which isn't in the screenshot). Each column now has an edit button where the sites can be rearranged and moved from favourites to non favourites and this is persistent between app launches, moving a site in one column moves it in all of them. I've removed site icons in order to put them in properly so they load lazily and theres no UI freezing. Printing Functionality all implemented and working, thanks to systempuntoout's stackprinter.com works with AirPrint, which means this app will be iOS 4.2 minimum. Current features: 3 columns Email link to question, open in safari and copy link actions History for both questions and sites visited In app notification (red bar at the top) when a new site makes it into beta. StackPrinter in the app, without needing safari, and AirPrint functionality. Facebook Intergration Planned: Local Favourites Watching (a list of questions your watching, like short term favourites, with eventually push notifications) Web service to access local favourites and watches on non-iPad devices. • css: zoooming-out inside the browser moves rightmost floated div below other divs

  I am seeing something strange in both firefox and chrome when I increase the zoom level inside these browsers, although I see nothing wrong with my CSS... I am hoping someone on this group will be able to help. Here is the whole story: I have a right-floated top-level div containing three right-floated right. The three inner divs have all box-model measurements in pixels which add up to the width of the enclosing container. Everything looks fine when the browser size is 100%, but when I start making the browser smaller with CTRL+scrollwheel or CTRL+minus the rightmost margin shrinks down too fast and eventually becomes zero, forcing my rightmost floated inner div to fall down below the other two! I can't make sense out of this, almost seems like some integer division is being performed incorrectly in the browser code, but alas firefox and chrome both display the same result. Rsyslog has become the default on most linux distro. Requirements have changed (security, software configuration management, ...). I'd like to ask the following questions : How do you centralize, display and archive system logs? How would you like to do it now if you had to? Most linux distro use rsyslog nowadays, which can provide reliable log transport. But some older unices, network devices and maybe windows box still use old udp rfc-style transport. How did you manage to get reliable transport? Storing logs for a few months can represent a huge amount of disk space. How do you store them? rdbms? Compressed and encrypted text files?

• Average SPA weight [on hold]

  First, sorry my noobs questions, but I'm mainly Windows Developer and not Web Developer :) I'm developing a single page application with a lot of css & javascript. For now the page is 1.3Mo composed by 5 section. Here are the rounded stats : Document : 10kb Style : 60kb Images : 450 kb (already compressed, include a big gallery thumbnails) Javascript : 700kb - 600kb of "framework" (jquery, jquery-ui, boostrap, modernizer, waypoint, ...) and 100kb of custom js. Fonts : 125kb And the site is not finished yet. (Will include gmap api, and some others...) My questions are : Do you have any statistics about the average weight of an SPA ? As this is the whole website, do you think it's acceptable ? Is lazy load (for images) a solution ? What will be impact for SEO ? Is the "200kb rule" of google still relevant ? Do you know great tools to detect which javascript code is not used during the the exection of a page and then the availability to optimize these 700kb of framework js stuffs ?   I'm working on a game engine using the Entity System and I have some questions. How I see Entity System : Components : A class with attributs, set and get. Sprite Physicbody SpaceShip ... System : A class with a list of components. (Component logic) EntityManager Renderer Input Camera ... Entity : Just a empty class with a list of components. • Is there a way communicate or measure levels of abstraction?

  I'll be the first to say that this question is a bit... out there. But here are a couple questions I bear in mind : Is abstraction continuous or discrete? Is there a single unit of abstraction? But I'm not sure those questions are truly answerable or even really makes sence. My naive answer would be something along the lines of abitrarily discrete but not necescarily having a single unit measure. Here's what I mean... Take a Black Labrador; an abstraction that could be made is that a Black Lab is a type of animal. [Animal]<--[Black Lab] A Black Lab is also a type of Dog. [Dog]<--[Black Lab] One way to establish a degree of abstraction is by comparing the two the abstractions. We could say that [Animal] is more abstract than [Dog] in respect to a Black Lab. It just so happens [Animal] can also be used as an abstraction of [Dog] So, we might end up with something like [Animal]<--[Dog]<--[Black Lab] With the model above, one might be inclined to say that there's two hops of abstraction to get from [Black Lab] to [Animal]. But you can't exactly tell somebody they need one level abstraction and reasonalby expect they will come up with [Dog] given they aren't explicity given the options above. If I needed to tell someobody in a single email that they needed an abstract class with out knowing what that abstract class is, is there a way to communaticate a degree of abstraction such that they might end up on Dog instead of Animal? As a side note, what area of study might this type of analysis fall under?

  The current release of Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse, though in technology preview, brings Oracle ADF binding to the Eclipse IDE. You can download the Software from the link below: Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (12.1.1.1.0) Technical Preview New June 2012 Certified on Windows 7/XP/Vista, MacOS, and Linux. Supported on JDK 6. For many Eclipse users, ADF is new and therefore I expect them to need guidance and help in case they run into issues they don't know how to recover from. Similar, ADF users familiar with Oracle JDeveloper that want to give OEPE a try, will find things different in Eclipse and thus may have questions.  For both audiences I suggest to post issues to the OEPE forum on the Oracle Technology Network: I'll extend my OTN monitoring to include the OEPE forum on a daily basis to learn about developer needs, requirements and - of course - to catch bugs that need to be filed. From my side this is a part-time involvement, which means that the more ADF questions show on the forum, the more help I could need in answering them. The OTN forum for JDeveloper in my opnion wouldn't be the right place to go to unless the question is a generic ADF question that is not dependent on the integration in Eclipse.   It has been really quiet here but I wasted no time. I passed exam 70-630 - TS: Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007, Configuring and in this posting I will give you a short overview of this very-very easy exam exam. If you are not new to SharePoint Server 2007 and you have some development experiences then this is the easiest exam from Microsoft you have ever seen. There are 51 questions in this exam and two or four of them were not familiar to me. I took me about one hour to prepare for this exam and I got 964 of 1000. Okay, I have some years of experience as SharePoint developer but these questions seemed still too easy for me to be real. I mean based on this exam you cannot accurately say if somebody is able to configure SharePoint Server or not. I think this exam should be very easy also to SharePoint Server administrators who have at least some experience with supporting and maintaining production systems running on SharePoint Server 2007. Those who does not feel strong on SharePoint Server configuring my read a book suggested by Microsoft Learning site: Inside Microsoft® Office SharePoint® Server 2007.   Hello All, I am preparing for a Systems Admin(linux) role for a big company(top 10 companies) and one of the requisite is knowledge of a language like perl, python or Ruby. I have a phone interview which involves sharing a editor with the interviewer, now what kind of coding exercise can I expect on a phone interview or a regular interview? I have used shell for most of my day-to-day tasks and occasionally Perl and python for bigger tasks. Now I don't expect them to ask Write a script that sync's AD users to LDAP? I don't think data structures, algorithms or sorting questions apply to me role? Can you give me any examples of SysAdmin related coding questions?

  In yesterday’s blog post we explored various resources related to learning Big Data and in this blog post we will wrap up this 21 day series on Big Data. I have been exploring various terms and technology related to Big Data this entire month. It was indeed fun to write about Big Data in 21 days but the subject of Big Data is much bigger and larger than someone can cover it in 21 days. My first goal was to write about the basics and I think we have got that one covered pretty well. During this 21 days I have received many questions and answers related to Big Data. I have covered a few of the questions in this series and a few more I will be covering in the next coming months. Now after understanding Big Data basics. I am personally going to do a list of the things next. I thought I will share the same with you as this will give you a good idea how to continue the journey of the Big Data. • Clientside anticheating in multiplayer game 1vs1

  I'm developing a simple card game, where there will be a matchmaking system that will put you against another human player. This will be the only game mode available, a 1vs1 against another human, no AI. I want to prevent cheating as much as possible. I have already read a lot of similar questions here and I already know that I cannot trust the client and I have to make all verifications server side. I intend to have a server (need one for the matchmaking anyway) and I intend to make some verifications server side but if I want to check everything server side this makes my server to be able to keep track of the state of all current games and check every action, and I don't have the money/infrastructure to support that server. My idea is to make clients check and verify some of the actions made by their opponent* and if they find some illegal action notify the possible cheating to the server and make the server verify it. This will still require my server to keep track of all current games, but it will save resources only checking some things that cannot be checked at client side(like card order in the deck) and only checking other things when they are actually wrong. *(only those they can check with out allowing themselves cheating! for example:they can't check if the played card was in hand cos that will need them to know all cards in hand) Summing up, my questions are: is this a viable approach? will I actually save resources doing this or the extra complexity in the server and client for exchanging this messages is not worth it? do you know any game that has successfully or unsuccessfully tried a similar approach? • Central Ohio Day of .Net 2010 Slides and Files
