• Can RPM packages be installed into Cygwin?

  I noticed that there is a command - rpm - under Cygwin 1.7. Does that mean RPM packages can be installed into Cygwin? I tried to install ncbi-blast-2.2.26+-3.i686.rpm (see: ftp://ftp.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/blast/executables/blast+/LATEST/ ) into Cygwin 1.7.13 with the command "install -i ncbi-blast-2.2.26+-3.i686.rpm". However, error message appeared as below. I tried to search for the missing libs using the setup.exe of Cygwin. It seems that some of them were not present, such as libc.so.6, libdl.so.2, libm.so.6, libnsl.so.1, and libz.so.1. Where can I get these libs? • Error trapping for a missing data source in a Spring MVC / Spring JDBC web app [migrated]

  I have written a web app that uses Spring MVC libraries and Spring JDBC to connect to an Oracle DB. (I don't use any ORM type libraries as I create stored procedures on Oracle that do my stuff and I'm quite happy with that.) I use a connection pool to Oracle managed by the Tomcat container The app generally works absolutely fine by the way! BUT... I noticed the other day when I tried to set up the app on another Tomcat instance that I had forgotten to configure the connection pool and obviously the app could not get hold of an org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource object, so it crashed. I define the pool params in the tomcat "context.conf" In my "web.xml" I have: <servlet> <servlet-name>appServlet</servlet-name> <servlet-class>org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet</servlet-class> <init-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value>/WEB-INF/Spring/appServlet/servlet-context.xml</param-value> </init-param> <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> </servlet> <servlet-mapping> <servlet-name>appServlet</servlet-name> <!-- Map *everything* to appServlet --> <url-pattern>/</url-pattern> </servlet-mapping> <resource-ref> <description>Oracle Datasource example</description> <res-ref-name>jdbc/ora1</res-ref-name> <res-type>org.apache.commons.dbcp.BasicDataSource</res-type> <res-auth>Container</res-auth> </resource-ref> And I have a Spring "servlet-context.xml" where JNDI is used to map the data source object provided by the connection pool to a Spring bean with the ID of "dataSource": <jee:jndi-lookup id="dataSource" jndi-name="java:comp/env/jdbc/ora1" resource-ref="true" /> Here's the question: Where do I trap the case where the database cannot be accessed for whatever reason? I don't want the user to see a yard-and-a-half of Java stack trace in their browser, rather a nicer message that tells them there is a database problem etc. It seems that my app tries to configure the "dataSource" bean (in "servlet-context.xml") before any code has tested it can actually provide a dataSource object from the pool?! Maybe I'm not fully understanding exactly what is going on in these stages of the app firing up ... Thanks for any advice!

• Errors when attempting to update source files, Server 2012R2 (errors 80073701 and 14081)

  I have a Windows Server 2012R2 machine that I installed with Server Core, and then decided that I wanted to switch to GUI. I'll make the long story short: I ran windows updates, and now the source files are older/out of sync with the operating system, and I need to update the source files. Here are a couple of articles that outline how this is supposed to work: http://blog.coretech.dk/kaj/why-i-cant-convert-my-windows-server-2012-r2-core-to-gui/ http://blogs.technet.com/b/joscon/archive/2012/11/14/how-to-update-local-source-media-to-add-roles-and-features.aspx I have followed these instructions, but the updates are not successfully updating the source. I get errors like: "An error occurred - Package_for_KB29671203 Error: 0x80073701, Error: 14081, The referenced assembly could not be found." or "add-windowspackage failed. error code = 0x80073701, add-windowspackage: the referenced assembly could not be found" I've extensively searched for help on those error codes related to Server 2012 and windows updates, but my google-fu is failing me. I am using windows update packages found in c:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download How can I get these updates to bring my source files up to current? Thanks!

• silent failure while creating odbc data source

  I just got really confused trying to create an ODBC data source in Windows 2003 R2. I can create a connection to my chosen server (a MS SQL Server) on the "user DSN" tab, but when I try to do the same thing on the "system DSN tab", the process fails but without an error message. I am able to connect to the target database fine at the end of configuring a new data source, but when I click OK, the data source just isn't there. No error message, no sign that anything went amiss, other than the lack of a new data source. Very annoying, as I had to repeat the process a few times to make sure I wasn't crazy. Anybody got any hints? I suspect it is a permission problem of some sort but since there is no error message, I don't know where to start.

  Hi, I am developing a Java Applet that makes use of JOAL. • Event Log "Wake Source" when system wakes from sleep

  So I've been troubleshooting sleep timers for our systems and have run across an interesting issue. I need a way to report how long a system was awake after a number of different inputs. Now, I've discovered that the System Log tracks wake and sleep events and even tells you the times that everything happens at. The thing is doesn't tell you is what triggered the wake event. • What is reading source on an ebook reader like?

  There are a few open source projects I would really like to read through the code of to understand better / improve on. The problem is, for me, reading for a long time on the computer screen is tedious. I would love to be able to read code while lounging around and on a screen that was better on my eyes. Has anyone ever tried reading code on an ebook reader? It seems like the e-ink would make it easy on the eyes, plus it would be portable, plus it wouldn't kill any trees. In other words, it sounds perfect, but before I drop a couple benjamins on an ebook reader, I'd like to hear if anyone else has tried this and how it went. It seems Scott Hanselman discussed using the Kindle to read code, but I wouldn't necessarily want a Kindle. Has anyone had a positive experience with some other device? I realize this is not directly about programming, but it relates directly to my ability to improve my skills. I think if a good portable reading device for code exists, it could help a lot of programmers.

  I'm using org-mode to maintain my programming notes. This means I have lots of source code blocks, as follows. #+begin_src <language name> <code> #+end_src One thing I've noticed is that when I write the #+end_src, emacs doesn't color the source code as such. Yet, if I quit emacs and reopen the notes file (or force a refresh with the Org-Refresh/Reload-Refresh setup current buffer menu entry) the source is colored grey if I'm using the GUI or green if I'm using emacs in the terminal. Is this an inherent limitation of emacs, or am I doing something wrong in setting up my code blocks that's preventing emacs from going back and recoloring the source code that I've entered?

  I have multiple source spreadsheets, each with a variable number of rows. An example might be one spreadsheet per bank account, with one row for each transaction, with a date and amount. One spreadsheet might have 30 rows, the other 50, and so on. I want to create another spreadsheet which links to the various source spreadsheets and lists an aggregate of all transactions from all sources. So if 3 source sheets with 30, 50 and 20 rows respectively, the destination sheet would have 100 rows. The number of rows (transactions) in the source sheets can grow or shrink over time. I'd like the destination sheet to show one contiguous list of transactions without gaps (spaces). How can I do this?

• Windows Event Log wrong Source column value

  In the Event Viewer in Windows 7 there is a Source column that is set by my Windows Service application. The value is set to TOS and usually when a log entry is associated to my application, it has TOS as the Source column value. However, when the service fails to start (or some other kind of error occurs) I get a Source of one of the following values: Application Error Service Control Manager .NET Runtime I don't understand why the value is not always TOS Also, is it possible to force it to use TOS every time?

As such, people keep asking if they can use my open source code/library in their commercial apps. I want them to be able to, provided they give credit to the source app (the project which i based my code, from .. and that has the BSD license) and also my code. They can take my code and do whatever (fork it, etc).. Just make sure they give credit, of course. So - what license could I use? Currently, I've set it to be GPL .. so is that ok? • Is ffmpeg incorrectly interpreting .aif files?

  Being on an Ubuntu 10.04 server i installed the ffmpeg packages with apt. ffmpeg is working afterwards, and doing as it should. Almost. For testing purposes i uploaded a few audiofiles. One of them, an aif file, is not being correctly interpreted. While on my workhorse (Mac SnowLeopard) ffmpeg tells the format as Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, s32, 2116 kb/s my Ubuntu server says it is: Stream #0.0: Audio: pcm_s24be, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 2116 kb/s which is the wrong bitdepth. Ubuntu then fails to convert the file with the error message [pcm_s24be @ 0xcd4b580]invalid PCM packet Error while decoding stream #0.0 which certainly is not true. The file is perfectly valid. Are there any know issues for ffmpeg interpreting the aif format? How can i find out which version of the aif-codec ffmpeg is using? • Dynamically load and call delegates based on source data

  Assume I have a stream of records that need to have some computation. Records will have a combination of these functions run Sum, Aggregate, Sum over the last 90 seconds, or ignore. A data record looks like this: Date;Data;ID Question Assuming that ID is an int of some kind, and that int corresponds to a matrix of some delegates to run, how should I use C# to dynamically build that launch map? I'm sure this idea exists... it is used in Windows Forms which has many delegates/events, most of which will never actually be invoked in a real application. The sample below includes a few delegates I want to run (sum, count, and print) but I don't know how to make the quantity of delegates fire based on the source data.
