• ORM solutions (JPA; Hibernate) vs. JDBC

  I need to be able to insert/update objects at a consistent rate of at least 8000 objects every 5 seconds in an in-memory HSQL database. I have done some comparison performance testing between Spring/Hibernate/JPA and pure JDBC. I have found a significant difference in performance using HSQL.. With Spring/Hib/JPA, I can insert 3000-4000 of my 1.5 KB objects (with a One-Many and a Many-Many relationship) in 5 seconds, while with direct JDBC calls I can insert 10,000-12,000 of those same objects. I cannot figure out why there is such a huge discrepancy. I have tweaked the Spring/Hib/JPA settings a lot trying to get close in performance without luck. I want to use Spring/Hib/JPA for future purposes, expandability, and because the foreign key relationships (one-many and many-many) are difficult to maintain by hand; but the performance requirements seem to point towards using pure JDBC. Any ideas of why there would be such a huge discrepancy?

  I have a Web application (Flex 4 - Spring Blaze DS - Spring 3.0) which sends out an JMS event to a batch application (Standalone java) I am using JMS infrastrucure provided by Spring (spring JmsTemplate,SimpleMessageListenerContainer,MessageListenerAdapter) with TIBCO EMS. Is there any way by which we can notify a web user once message processing is completed by listener. One of the way to send a response event which will be listened by web application; but how to address following scenario: User1 click on submit - which in turn sends a JMS message Listener on receiving message processes the message (message processing may take 20-30 mins to complete). Listener application sends out another JMS event "Process_complete" As this is a web application; there are n users currently logged into the application. so how to identify a correct user / what if user is already logged off? Is there any way to handle this? Please post your views.

• Using both RolesAllowed and Transactional in beans

  I have some beans which contain methods which are annotated with both @RolesAllowed and @Transactional. I have one Spring config file which utilizes a BeanNameAutoProxyCreator for Security related beans and another Spring config file which utilizes a BeanNameAutoProxyCreator for Transactional related beans. The problem is that some beans contain both security as well as transactional-related beans. So Spring creates proxies for one set of beans. It then tries to create proxies for the other set of beans. When it does, it tries to create proxies of the proxies and bombs out. Has anyone tried to configure both security and transactionality in the same beans via Spring? What's the trick? Thanks.

  The system log on my Openfire + OpenLDAP installation is getting flooded with this message: slap_global_control: unrecognized control: 1.2.840.113556.1.4.473 This means that Openfire wants OpenLDAP to do server-side sorting, which OpenLDAP doesn't support. The Openfire LDAP Guide advises to set the property ldap.clientSideSorting to true in this case. Unfortunately, Openfire doesn't find any user accounts in LDAP anymore if I do that. How do I make this work?

• How to add LDAP user to existing local group in RHEL?

  I'm attempting to add some of our LDAP users to a locally defined group on our RHEL server, however I get an error stating that the LDAP user is not found in /etc/passwd. What would be the best way to allow LDAP users to be added to local groups? My feeling is that this must be done manually. I could edit: /etc/group and add the LDAP group to the list. Would that be ideal? • Debugging JSR 168 Portlet with spring, eclipse & pluto.

  I am trying to set up a development environment to test Spring Portlet MVC for development of JSR 168 conforming portlets. I have the latest STS installed, which included Spring 2.5 and Eclipse (Catalina). This has been my environment to develop with Spring MVC, and that works fine using Apache as a local server for debugging. I found some instructions on the Pluto portal site on using Pluto as a remote debugging host for portlets. I have implemented those instructions. I am sending Eclipse into debug mode by right clicking on one of the JSPs and going into "debug as". My problem is that when I log into Pluto, it is not sending me into debug mode. I am seeing the default Pluto page as opposed to my portlet. My portlet has not been installed onto Pluto, and the instructions do not seem to require the portlet to be installed.   I'm trying to integrate Hibernate Search with Spring, but I can't seem to index anything. I was able to get Hibernate Search to work without Spring, but I'm having a problem integrating it with Spring. Any help would be much appreciated. • Using Java classes(whole module with Spring/Hibernate dependency) in Grails

  I have a Java/Spring/Hibernate application with a payment module. Payment module has some domain classes for payment subscription and transactions etc. Corresponding hibernate mapping files are there. This module uses applicationContext.xml for some of the configuration it needs. Also, This module has a PaymentService which uses a paymentDAO to do all database related work. Now, I want to use this module as it is(without any or minimal re-writing) in my other application(Grails application). I want to bring in the payment module as a jar or copy the source files to src/java folder in Grails. With that background, I have following queries: Will the existing applicationContext.xml for Spring configuration in the module will work as it is in Grails? Does it merge with rest of Grails's Spring config? Where do I put the applicationContext.xml? classpath? src/java should work? Can I bundle the applicationContext.xml in Jar(If I use jar option) and can overwrite in Grails if anything needs to be changed? Multiple bean definition problems in that case? PaymentService recognized as regular service? Will it be auto-injected in controllers and/or other services? Will PaymentDAO use the datasource configuration of Grails? Where do I put the hbm files of this module? Can I bundle the hbm files in Jar(If I use jar option) and can overwrite in Grails if anything needs to be changed? Which hbms are picked? or, there will be problems with that? Too many questions! :) All these concerns are actually before trying. I am going to try this in next few days(busy currently). • SpringMvc java.lang.NullPointerException When Posting Form To Server [closed]

  I have a form with a user name field on it when i tab out of the field i use a RESTFUL Web Service that makes a call to a handler method in the controller. The method makes a call to a DAO class that checks the database if the user name exists. This works fine, however when the form is posted to the server i call the same exact function i would call in the handler method however i get a java.lang.NullPointerException when it accesses the class that makes a call to the DAO object. So it does not even access the DAO object the second time. I have exception handlers around the calls in all my classes that makes calls. Any ideas as to whats happening here why i would get the java.lang.NullPointerException the second time the function is called.Does this have anything to do with Spring instantiating DAO classes using a Singleton method or something to that effect? What can be done to resolve this?   I need to choose an authentication method for an application installed and integrated in customers environment. There are two types of environments - windows and linux/unix. Application is user based, no web stuff, pure Java. The requirement is to authenticate users which will use my application against customer provided user base. Meaning, customer installs my app, but uses his own users to grant or deny access to my app. Typical, right? I have three options to consider and I need to pick up the one which would be a) the most flexible to cover most common modern environments and b) would take least effort while stay robust and standard. Option (1) - Authenticate locally managing user credentials in some local storage, e.g. file. Customer would then add his users to my application and it will then check the passwords. Simple, clumsy but would work. Customers would have to punch every user they want to grant access to my app using some UI we will have to provide. Lots of work for me, headache to the customer. Option (2) - Use LDAP authentication. Customers would tell my app where to look for users and I will walk their directory resolving names into user names and trying to bind with found password. This is better approach IMO, but more fragile because I will have to walk an unknown directory structure and who knows if this will be permitted everywhere. Would be harder to test since there are many LDAP implementation out there, last thing I want is drowning in this voodoo. Option(3) - Use plain Kerberos authentication. Customers would tell my app what realm (domain) and which KDC (key distribution center) to use. In ideal world these two parameters would be all I need to set while customers could use their own administration tools to configure domain and kdc. My application would simply delegate user credentials to this third party (using JAAS or Spring security) and consider success when third party is happy with them. I personally prefer #3, but not sure what surprises I might face. Would this cover windows and *nix systems entirely? Is there another option to consider?

• Cannot bind OSX to AD

  I'm trying to get an mac mini running snow leopard server to join a windows domain here. The windows domain server is running Windows server 2008. When I go to "Accounts" in my System Preferences, and lick on "Join", I get this error: "Unable to add server. Node name wasn't found. (2000)" In my console messages I find this: 10-04-06 11:42:25 AM System Preferences1452 -[ODCAddServerSheetController handleOtherActionError: gotError: Error Domain=com.apple.OpenDirectory Code=2000 UserInfo=0x2004f2f80 "Custom call 82 to Active Directory failed.", Node name wasn't found. I specified a FQDN for the domain server, so I am totally confused as to why it would list "domain = com.apple...." in that error. I've tried firing up the Directory Utility and trying to join a domain via the Active Directory option there. Again I fill in the FQDN, and the proper administrator/password acount info. Now I get a different error: "Invalid Domain An invalid Domain and Forest combination was specified. You should enter a fully qualified DNS name for the domain and forest (e.g., ads.company.com)." If anyone has any pointers or suggestions this would be appreciated.

• Active Directory and Apple's Workgroup Manager

  I thought I'd share my experiences here. I work for a small business with only ~20 users. I wanted the ability to use managed client preferences to assign things like the software update server. Basically the ability to manage my Macs easily and in a native way. At first I tried the magic triangle solution, but I found this to be very complicated. Not only does it require a Mac OS X Server, but it gives you two points of failure. Additionally each Mac workstation must be bound to both servers. Eventually I sucked it up and went with the schema changes documented here. I was hesitant at first, because the instructions require a lot of manual work. However it was fairly basic and only took me about an hour and a half. Below you'll find the schema changes file that was a result of my work. I followed the instructions exactly and double checked everything, after six months of having this in place things have been running great. Too good to not share.   How am I supposed to pass a password to ldapsearch using the -y <password file> option? If I write the password in the password file in plain text, I get this error: ldap_bind: Invalid credentials (49) additional info: 80090308: LdapErr: DSID-0C0903AA, comment: AcceptSecurityContext error, data 52e, v1772 The same happens if I use the -w <password> option. Am I missing something?

• Active Directory, Linux, and User Private Groups

  We're in the process of moving from NIS on our Linux systems to binding everything to Active Directory. The NIS environment follows the common standard used by many Linux distributions that a user's primary group is a group of the same name as the user (and of which the user is typically the only member). I have been informed that in the Active Directory environment, you may not have a group name with the same name as a user (specifically, that no two AD security objects may have the same name). This would seem to complicate the process of moving our group definitions into AD. It looks like we could maintain the NIS group information in AD using only POSIX attributes (e.g., not an actual AD security object), but that seems like a suboptimal fix (because we do really want to have the same view of group membership in both the Unix and AD worlds). Have you moved a large legacy NIS environment into Active Directory? How did you handle this situation?

• Configure ApacheDS 1.5 with accessControlEnabled=true for authenticated access

  I need to set up an apacheDS instance. I am using standalone 1.5.5 on Linux. I have removed the example partition and added two of my own, each with their own suffixes. I have imported LDIFs for the two partitions and everything looks correct data-wise. I need to configure ApacheDS to disallow anonymous access. I was able to do that by following some of the directions here: http://directory.apache.org/apacheds/1.5/145-enable-and-disable-anonymous-access.html http://directory.apache.org/apacheds/1.5/32-basic-authorization.html Now only the administrator account (uid=admin,ou=system) can log in and make queries. I need to establish an admin account, and a "regular user" account which can read and write only certain entries within each partition. I tried to read the above docs and I got nuthin'. The second page "basic authorization" is completely incomprehensible to me. When I tried to add a "prescriptiveACI" to it using Apache Directory Studio, I get: Administration point 2.5.4.11=abc,2.5.4.10=efg does not contain an administrativeRole attribute! An administrativeRole attribute in the administrative point is required to add a subordinate subentry. where my partition is "ou=abc,o=def". I have no clue what is going on and the docs are really not helping, I am at a complete loss here. How can it possibly be this hard to just restrict access? P.S. can someone with proper rep please change the tag "apache" to the new tag "ApacheDS"?
