• Port forwarding on D-Link DIR-615 super-slow, useless

  Hello I have replaced my old router with DIR-615 from D-Link, and now the port forwarding is so slow it makes the router practically useless. Accessing the router itself (admin UI) is without issues, no delay whatsoever. But when I try to access a service on another computer in the network the requests take minutes and minutes. (E.g. I can see source of my GWT-app main page, but loading additional CSS and JS files takes years.) If anyone could recommend any further diagnostics I should do to figure out what is happening it would be great. Few notes: happens with more services (web-app on Tomcat, viewing directory index via Apache) it does not make a difference whether the service is hosted on wired or wireless PC accessing the service on a localhost works fine turning off firewall on the target PC does not make difference either (makes sense) when I replace this router with the old one (both 192.168.1.1) everything works fine I see nothing suspicious in the router's log I believe I have the latest firmware (4.11) DIR-615 sucks, it already died once completely Regards Jarda Z.

What I'd need is a free or cheap (most password mgr software is $500 for 20+ users, exaggerated!) multi-user password manager, highly preferable web-based so that we can host it on one of our local server, of Hyper-V VM's. So: -free or cheap ( <100$) -multi-user of groups -web based -not very hard to install I tried a few, one very expensive, one I did not get to work- Web Keepass Manager This works with tomcat and probably conflicts with our IIS 7.0 or 7.5 PS: thus, nothing online (!) it has to stay local Thanks in advance!

• apache and ajp performance

  I have an apache sitting in front of two tomcat app servers(one on the same physical server, the other on a different one) that does time consuming work(0.5 sec to 10sec per request). The apache http server is getting killed by an average of 1 to 2 concurrent requests per second. both Server spec is about 2GB of RAM. Is there a way to optimize apache to handle the load? any advise is welcome. • Unable to connect guest using VMWare Player

  I'm running RedHat server 5.3 as guest on Window XP VMware palyer. the network setting is set to "Host Only", but I have tries all other settings. I'm able to ping the guest machine, but I'm unable to connect it in any other way including webserver, Tomcat, Telnet, ssh. all of the services above are working from within the guest (using localhost). Guest firewall and SELinux are disabled. any idea on what I should check next? every idea will be appreciated... thnaks Ilan

• How to put 1000 lightweight server applications in the cloud

  The company I work for sells a commercial desktop/server app that runs on any non dedicated Windows PC or server and uses Tomcat for all interactions with the application. Customers are asking that we host their instance of the application so they don't have to run it locally on their own servers. The app is lightweight and an average server, in theory, could handle 25-50 instances before users would notice a slowdown. However only 1 instance can run per Windows instance (because the application writes to a common registry branch) so we'd need something like VMWare to create 25-50 Windows instances. We know we eventually need to reprogram to make it truly cloud-worthy but what would you recommend for a server farm or whatever for this? We don't have the setup to purchase our own servers so we must use a 3rd party. We have budgeted $500 - $1000 per year per customer for this service. Thanks in advance for your suggestions, experiences and guidance.

  Hi, I have an Amazon EC2 instance running and I am installing a program on it that needs to know what the machine's IP address is. Can I set the Elastic IP address to the IP address within the EC2 instance? Its okay if it reroutes data packets somewhere 'outside' and then back to itself, but the software NEEDs me to specify an IP address of the machine its on. I proceeded with the software installation using the "local IP" (10.xx.xx.xx) within the software installation. I don't know if this is the reason why the application is not visible publicly (as I'm trying to determine in the question http://serverfault.com/questions/166946/allowing-web-access-to-an-amazon-ec2-windows-server-2008-instance-running-tomcat)

• How do I make a privileged port non-privileged in Redhat 5?

  So I have a RedHat 5 box that I'm wanting to run an application that I wrote that implements SLP. SLP uses port 427 for answering service queries. My understanding is that ports below 1024 are "privileged" and thus cannot be bound to by anyone that's not root. I cannot run this application as root as it is launched via tomcat. One creative solution I really like was simply writing an iptables rule to route the privileged port to a non-privileged. In my proof of concept tests, this works wonderfully. Unfortunately, it would be greatly (and understandably) desired by the powers if my application did not require screwing around with iptables upon installation. So I heard a rumor and cannot find anything to verify this that there was some sort of command or parameter that could be set to make any port I want be non-privileged. Is this true? If so, how is this done? Thanks!

  I'm managing my very small office server with windows server 2008. since I have only one server, and the user group is really small. I made the first hdd into 2 partitions. one (C:) for windows and Active directory, another (D:) for tomcat and database. I'm doing incremental back C: and D: daily to hdd2 (E:) using windows server backup. is it enough to let me do fully restore my server in case of disaster? I ask this because I have read there is also a system state backup, and I also have to do that periodically in order to get AD back? isn't it with incremental/full backup I can do full bare-metal recovery?

• Virtual hosting in Varnish with individual vcl files for configuration

  I wish to use varnish to put in front of an apache and a tomcat on the same server. Depending on the ip requested, it goes to a different backend. This works. Now for most of the sites the default varnish logic will work just fine. However for some specific sites I wish to use custom VCL code. I can test for host name and include config files for the specific domains, but this only works inside the individual methods recv etc. Is there a way to include a complete set of instructions, in one file, per domain, without having to manage separate files for subdomain_recv, subdomain_fetch etc? And preferably without running seperate instances of varnish. When I try to include a file on the "root level" of default.vcl, I get a compilation error. Best regards, Michael

  I would like to make a script which can maintain multiple servers via SSH. I want to control the authentication/authorization in such a manner that authentication is done by gateway and any other access is routed through this ssh server to internal services without any further authentication/authorization requirements. So if a user A can log into server_1 for example. He can then ssh to server_2 without any other authentication and do what ever he is allowed to do on server_2 (like shut down mysql, upgrade it and restart it. This could be done via some remote shell script). The problem that I am trying to solve is to come up with a deployment script for a JavaEE system which involves databases and tomcat instances. They need to be shutdown and re-spawned. The requirement is to have a deployment script which has minimal human interaction as possible for both developers and operation.

But when i try to browse a php page its not loading. What will be the problem??   When managing custom Java applications hosted inside WebSphere Application Server, what JMX metrics do you find most useful for monitoring performance, monitoring availability, and troubleshooting problems? And how do you prefer to slice and visualize those metrics (e.g. chart by top 10 hosts, graph by app, etc.). The more details I can get, the better, as I need to specify a standard set of reports which IT can offer to owners of applications hosted by IT, which those owners can customize but many won't bother. So I'll need to come up with a bunch of generally-applicable reports which most groups can use out-of-the-box. Obviously there's no one perfect answer to this question, so I'll accept the answer with the most comprehensive details and I'll be generous about upvoting any other useful answer. My question is WebSphere-specific, but I realize that most JMX metrics are equally applicable across any container, so feel free to give an answer for JBoss, Tomcat, WebLogic, etc.

  I'm looking through google webmaster that my page is generating soft 404 errors (https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/181708?hl=en) google says: We recommend that you always return a 404 (Not found) or a 410 (Gone) response code in response to a request for a non-existing page But I've got redirects set up that handle old pages to redirect to the proper new pages using a 301. The website links changed because of a use of a framework, which allows it to be more consistent, but the old pages till have links out there to these. Should I be worried about this? IS google penalizing the site for this? (Using IIS 8, Tomcat, CF10, Win)

• Why Java applicaiton is running slow for clients on Linux

  We have two linux servers which have Apache Tomcat Installed. One is running the Database, the other is running with Java application. More than 100 users are connected to the servers. Server machines are quad core normal PC's which have 4 GB memory. It was running properly for the last 6 months but the application has recently started to run slowly . Suddenly the Java application is getting stuck & users cannot work for some time. There is no network issue. I am trying to identify the reason for this, whether it is a machine problem or the problem is in the Java application. Can any body help me with this?

  Hi, There is a frequent occurence of FULL GC in our system. We are using Java application running on Tomcat server. Our application is running using internal load balancer setup. We are seeing lot of Full GC's in the server logs due to which the application is hung and Proxy errors are occured. • How can I access a Web server in a VM from an iPad?

  I have a virtual machine (running Windows Server 2012, if it's relevant), on VMware Workstation. It is running an Apache Tomcat web server, and I'm wanting to access that webserver from an iPad. Is this feasible, or even possible ? I have tried running Connectify Hotspot on the host machine, but that only gets me as far as being able to access a webpage on the host machine. It doesn't look to pass the connection through to the VM as they are on different subnets. Any thoughts are gratefully received.

• Apache mod_wsgi elegant clustering method

  I'm currently trying to build a scalable infrastructure for my Python webservers. Actually, I'm trying to find the most elegant way to build a scalable cluster to host all my Python WebServices. For now, I'm using three servers like this: 1 x PuppetMaster to deploy my servers. 2 x Apache Reverse Proxy Front-end servers. 1 x Apache HTTPd Server which host the Python WSGI Applications and binded to using mod_wsgi. 4 x MongoDB Clustered server. Everything is OK concerning the Reverse proxy and the DB Backend, I'm able to easily add a new Reverse Proxy and a new DB Node, but my problem is about the Python WebServer. I thinked to just provision a new node with exactly the same configuration and a rsync replication between the two nodes, but It's not really usefull in term of deployement for my developpers etc. So if you have a solution which is as efficient and elegant that the Tomcat Cluster I'll be really happy to ear it ;-)

• node.js server not running

  I am trying to learn node.js, but I'm having trouble getting the simple server to run on localhost:8888. Here is the code for server.js: var http = require("http"); http.createServer(function(request, response) { response.writeHead(200, {"Content-Type": "text/plain"}); response.write("Hello World"); response.end(); }).listen(8888); server.js runs without errors, and trying netstat -an | grep 8888 from terminal returns tcp4 0 0 *.8888 *.* LISTEN However, when I go to localhost:8888 in a browser, it says that it cannot be found. I've looked at all the related questions, and nothing has worked so far. I've tried different ports, etc. I know that my router blocks incoming traffic on port 8888, but shouldn't that not matter if I'm trying to access it locally?   I'm a software developer and my workstation is running Win7 Ultimate, 64bit. I want to run a virtual PC on which I can deploy and run the web-software I create, as a virtual web-server PC. I want the VM to also be Windows as that's what I know, the version isn't too important but on that PC I want to run things like MySQL, TomCat, etc. I see VMWare make 'Player', also I see VirtualBox and I know MS also have solutions too, which I've heard good things about. Does it make much difference which I use as far as creating & using VMs? Or are they all pretty similar?

• SSH logins failing before success

  I am running Ubuntu 12.04 Server, updated, to run a webserver on Tomcat 7. I have about 1000 clients that are very very often using an RSYNC program to sync some file with this server. Those RSync are using SSH with a certain user to open connections on the server. The result is that my server is, as normal, full of connections by the same user. About 5 connections per 1 second every day any time. Then, when I try to open a regular SSH connection with my Putty client, the connection fails before login saying "Server unexpectedly closed network connection", about 6 times for 10 attemps, anbd for 4 attemps out of 10, it works normally and I am able to login as any user. Is there a overload of connections here? The server statistics are very calm saying less then 40% of network usage and less of 2% CPU. How can I improve this? Thank you for any help. V.

• Can't connect to localhost via browser. Can ping localhost.

  I'm trying to connect to localhost through my browser to learn some apache tomcat stuff. When I tried to connect to localhost through Firefox, I couldn't; when I tried through IE, I could the first time, but not after that. I'm using Windows 7, and changed the hosts file to point localhost to 127.0.0.1. I can successfully ping localhost and 127.0.0.1. I have tried turning off my antivirus and my Windows Firewall, but to no avail. What am I doing wrong?
