  • Best Practices / Patterns for Enterprise Protection/Remediation of SSNs (Social Security Numbers)

    I am interested in hearing about enterprise solutions for SSN handling. (I looked pretty hard for any pre-existing post on SO, including reviewing the terriffic SO automated "Related Questions" list, and did not find anything, so hopefully this is not a repeat.) First, I think it is important to enumerate the reasons systems/databases use SSNs: (note—these are reasons for de facto current state—I understand that many of them are not good reasons) Required for Interaction with External Entities. This is the most valid case—where external entities your system interfaces with require an SSN. This would typically be government, tax and financial. SSN is used to ensure system-wide uniqueness. SSN has become the default foreign key used internally within the enterprise, to perform cross-system joins. SSN is used for user authentication (e.g., log-on) The enterprise solution that seems optimum to me is to create a single SSN repository that is accessed by all applications needing to look up SSN info. This repository substitutes a globally unique, random 9-digit number (ASN) for the true SSN. I see many benefits to this approach. First of all, it is obviously highly backwards-compatible—all your systems "just" have to go through a major, synchronized, one-time data-cleansing exercise, where they replace the real SSN with the alternate ASN. Also, it is centralized, so it minimizes the scope for inspection and compliance. (Obviously, as a negative, it also creates a single point of failure.) This approach would solve issues 2 and 3, without ever requiring lookups to get the real SSN. For issue #1, authorized systems could provide an ASN, and be returned the real SSN. This would of course be done over secure connections, and the requesting systems would never persist the full SSN. Also, if the requesting system only needs the last 4 digits of the SSN, then that is all that would ever be passed. Issue #4 could be handled the same way as issue #1, though obviously the best thing would be to move away from having users supply an SSN for log-on.   • MVC Paging and Sorting Patterns: How to Page or Sort Re-Using Form Criteria

    What is the best ASP.NET MVC pattern for paging data when the data is filtered by form criteria? Currently, when I click the search button this action is called: [AcceptVerbs(HttpVerbs.Post)] public ActionResult Search(MemberSearchForm formSp, int? pageIndex, string sortExpression) {} That is perfect for the initial display of the results in the table. But I want to have page number links or sort expression links re-post the current form data (the user entered it the first time - persisted because it is returned as viewdata), along with extra route params 'pageIndex' or 'sortExpression', Can an ActionLink or RouteLink (which I would use for page numbers) post the form to the url they specify? <%= Html.RouteLink("page 2", "MemberSearch", new { pageIndex = 1 })%> At the moment they just do a basic redirect and do not post the form values so the search page loads fresh. In regular old web forms I used to persist the search params (MemberSearchForm) in the ViewState and have a GridView paging or sorting event reuse it.

    Hi I want to delete a line using sed if it matches 2 regular expressions in the same line. EG the line starts with /* and end with */ (comment). The following script will do most of that. sed -e '/^\/*/ d' -e '/*\/$/ d' filename This script will remove all lines that start with * and end with */. I want it to remove the line only if is meets both criteria not one.

    First off, I'd like to say that I'm already looking into the "Cutting Stock Problem" algorithm, however I feel that I need a bit more clarification, and possibly some help with some of the math (Not my strong point). What I need to do is have an offset pattern that causes the circle to fit in the crevasse created by having the two circular dies sitting next to each other on the previous line, like so: O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O O I'm hoping someone can point me towards the right algorithm for this!     Looking for a simple SQL (PostgreSQL) regular expression or similar solution (maybe soundex) that will allow a flexible search. So that dashes, spaces and such are omitted during the search. As part of the search and only the raw characters are searched in the table.: Currently using: SELECT * FROM Productions WHERE part_no ~* '%search_term%' If user types UTR-1 it fails to bring up UTR1 or UTR 1 stored in the database. But the matches do not happen when a part_no has a dash and the user omits this character (or vice versa) EXAMPLE search for part UTR-1 should find all matches below. UTR1 UTR --1 UTR 1 any suggestions...

  • Searching for patterns to create a TCP Connection Pool for high performance messaging

    I'm creating a new Client / Server application in C# and expect to have a fairly high rate of connections. That made me think of database connection pools which help mitigate the expense of creating and disposing connections between the client and database. I would like to create a similar capability for my application and haven't been able to find any good examples of how to apply this pattern. Do I really need to spin up an instance of a TcpClient every time I want to send a message to the server and receive a receipt message? Each connection is expected to transport between 1-5KB with each receiving a 1KB response message. I realize this question is somewhat vague, but I am starting from scratch so I am open to suggestions. Even if that means my suppositions are all wrong.

    Hi there, I know this is a weird question to ask, but I would like to know if there is any documentation/blog-article out there that explains the architecture of a Website content management system? More particularly, I am interested to learn more about how "widgets" are implemented. I can't remember which system it was that I've seen tis one, but in the "Page Layout view" it had the ability to allow the end user to select a widget (thumbnail gallery, contact form, etc) from a list, and drag and drop it onto custom areas of the page. I know that this is not directly a programming question, but please could I seek advice/feedback on this. Thanks!

  • Better exception for non-exhaustive patterns in case

    Is there a way to get GHCi to produce better exception messages when it finds at runtime that a call has produced value that does not match the function's pattern matching? It currently gives the line numbers of the function which produced the non-exhaustive pattern match which though helpful at times does require a round of debugging which at times I feel is doing the same set of things over and over. So before I tried to put together a solution I wanted to see if something else exists. An exception message that in addition to giving the line numbers shows what kind of call it attempted to make? Is this even possible?

    Hello, I am fairly new to MVC, but after playing with it (MVC 3/Razor), I am hooked. I have a few questions: 1) What is the best, or most widely used pattern to develop MVC apps in? Repository, DDD, UOW? 2) I am using the Entity Framework 4, so could some please explain to me or point me to a good source that will explain the Repository Pattern w/EF4? Doesn't EF4 take place as the business layer and the data access layer? Does the Repository Pattern even provide a benefit? 3) Also, one last question, could someone explain the whole relationship between the Controller, the Model and the View? I get the basics, but maybe a little more in depth of the correct way to use it. View Models - Say I have a view that displays customer info, and one that edits it, should I have a view model and an edit model, or can the be passed around? 4) Examples??   • How to create a "sidebar" in Umbraco CMS?

    In Umbraco, every page has a content field that you can edit in the admin-area. What I want would be a second content field that I (actually my customer who will be editing the content by himself) can edit on every page. I would then create a masterpage/template that contains the two content areas (the first one as the main content and the second one as the sidebar). At least this is how I would do it. Is this possible or is there even a better approach for having a main content and a separate sidebar on every page?

    i have noticed that every area has some tools you can use to make things easier. eg. css = dreamweaver doctrine/propel = orm designer // you dont have to hardcore code schemas manually and remembering all the syntax/variables mysql = mysql workbench // the same etc. in this way you get aided and dont have to type things the hard way, and can learn the structure, but then use GUI tools to help you develop faster. now i'm learning design patterns (singleton, factory, command, memento etc) and im wondering if there are some kind of tools you can use that will help you develop faster. i dont know exactly what tools i'm trying to find, just helping me when coding with design patterns (schema drawings? references?) are there any?

  • What's the difference between DI and factory patterns?

    I have a class which depends on 3 classes, all 3 of which have other classes they rely on. Currently, I'm using a container class to build up all the required classes, inject them into one another and return the application. The simplified version of the container looks something like this: class Builder { private $_options; public function __construct($options) { $this->_options = $options; } public function build() { $cache = $this->getCache(); $response = $this->getResponse(); $engine = $this->getEngine(); return new Application($cache,$response,$engine); } public function getResponse() { $encoder = $this->getResponseEncoder(); $cache = $this->getResponseCache(); return new Response($encoder,$cache); } // Methods for building each object } I'm not sure if this would be classified as FactoryMethod or a DI Container. They both seem to solve the same problem in the same way - They build objects and inject dependencies. This container has some more complicated building methods, like loading observers and attaching them to observable objects. Should factories be doing all the building (loading extensions etc) and the DI container should use these factories to inject dependencies? That way the sub-packages, like Cache, Response etc, can each have their own specialised factories.

    I'm currently writing out xml and have done the following: header ("content-type: text/xml"); header ("content-length: ".strlen($xml)); $xml being the xml to be written out. I'm near about 1.8 megs of text (which I found via firebug), it seems as the writing is taking more time than the script to run.. is there a way to increase this write speed? Thank you in advance.

And I figured, that there must be some patterns for this, as it is a pretty important area? The application that we're developing, is layered traditionally, having data layer (Entity Framework 4) repositories domain layer service layer (can be WCF, with data transfer objects) multiple clients consuming the WCF service (ASP.NET [MVC], Silverlight, WPF) and clients accessing a service layer directly (no WCF) Are there books/articles/blogs that dig deeply into this area? Primarily about authorization such as handling multiple roles and attributes attached to users). It doesn’t have to be specific for the .NET Framework, but it would be preferred.
