• How do I show/hide an element in YUI as in jQuery?

  In jQuery, when I want to show or hide something, I do this: $('#elementId').show(); $('#elementId').hide(); How do I do this with YUI? I've tried YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').hide(), asked my co-workers, looked at the documentation, and searched Google, and I've found nothing helpful. From the documentation, it looks like this should work YAHOO.util.Dom.get('elementId').setStyle('display', 'none') but of course it does not. All I can think of is this, which sucks because then I'm not using a framework: document.getElementById('elementId').style.display = 'none';

• Is there any Prototype Javascript function similar to Jquery Live to trace dynamic dom elements?

  Hi Event.observe(window,"load",function() { $$(".elem_classs").findAll(function(node){ return node.getAttribute('title'); }).each(function(node){ new Tooltip(node,node.title); node.removeAttribute("title"); }); }); Using above method, I can retrieve all elements having ".elem_class" and apply some javascript functions on them. But I have a modal/popup box which has some elements also having ".elem_class" and these dont get in the scope of findAll/each as they are loaded into the dom thru ajax. How do I apply the same to dynamically loaded elements as well? I am using Prototype Library. (I have used JQuery's Live function which keeps track of all future elements, but need to achieve something similar using Prototype) Thanks.

• Is it possible to hide columns in jQuery Grid by default?

  I have been working with the jQuery Grid the past few days and one thing I have not found any documentation on yet is the ability to hide a column by default. The reason I want this is that I'm building my JSON w/ every property of my object yet my grid might only show 75% of these as valid columns. I want the ability to pass back more JSON than I actually use, and one way I thought to accomplish this would be to hide the columns I'm not using. Any other suggestions are welcome, but I would prefer the ability to push down a larger list of JSON than I actually use by default.

• what's the "best" approach to creating the UI of an audio plugin that will be both audio unit and VST for OS X and Windows?

  I'm working on a couple audio plugins. Right now, they are audio units. And while the "DSP" code won't change for the most part between implementations / ports, I'm not sure how to go about the GUI. For instance, I was looking at the Apple-supplied AUs in Lion. Does anyone know how did they go about the UI? Like, are the knobs and controls just subclasses of Cocoa controls? are they using some separate framework or coding these knobs and such from scratch? And then, the plugs I'm working on are going to be available too as VSTs for Windows. I already have them up and running with generic interfaces. But I'm wondering if I should just get over it and recreate all my interfaces with the vstgui code provided by Steinberg or if there's a more practical approach to making the interfaces cross-platform.

• Where do I put the links to my Javascript/jQuery files in my html file?

  I recently noticed that some (not all) of my javascript and jQuery scripts wouldn't work unless I put the link for the .js files nearer towards the bottom of the page instead of the head area where I put my links for my .css files. From what I understand, javascript can go in either places and it is recommended to not be put in the header as it slows down the page loading process as well. At the same time, if I put it in the body tag of the html file, it looks somewhat messy and was wondering what the best practice is for putting .js files in a cleanly place. Should I always put it at the very bottom right before the ending body tag? How do professional web developers handle this?

• mootools 1.1.1 scrollto element with class name ... anything like jquery?

  I get the impression mootools will do this, but in a roundabout way. I am working with livevalidation script. What I want to achieve is when the from runs and errors are generated then the page will scroll to the first error found. This will be outputted as: <span class=" LV_validation_message LV_invalid">Can't be empty!</span> with jquery I could do the following: $.scrollTo($('span.LV_invalid:1')); I get the feeling in mootools I have to first find the position of the first span with class LV_invalid then pass this to the scrollTo function or is there a much simpler solution?

  Hello, I have a shopping cart in Codeigniter in which products are added to the cart using (jQuery) Ajax. In the header of each page it displays the number of contents in the cart using <?php echo $this->cart->total_items(); ?> How can I update/refresh this variable when a product is added to the cart, as I am using AJAX to add products to the cart and thus the page isn't being reloaded when products are added. It seems pointless to use AJAX to do asyncronous stuff if I have to reload the page to get the new number of total items from the server. Many thanks.

  You may remember that the key goals of the new release of WebCenter are providing a Modern User Experience, unparalleled Application Integration, converging all the best of the existing portal platforms into WebCenter and delivering a Common User Experience Architecture.  In previous weeks we've provided an overview of Oracle WebCenter and discussed some of the other key goals and this week, we'll focus on how the new release of Oracle WebCenter delivers a Common User Experience Architecture.When Oracle talks about a Common User Experience Architecture, it really focuses on a core set of areas.  First, the way that information is accessed needs to be consistent and extensible so that as requirements change, the applications don't need to be rewritten for every change. Second, this information access layer needs to be securely accessible to any application, site, or any other channel that needs to leverage this information.  Third, there needs to be a consistent presentation layout, Oracle calls it a UI shell, so that all resources can fit together in a useable, productive way.  Fourth, there needs to be a common set of design patterns for how different menus, features, and services fit into this UI Shell for broad and productive usability.  Fifth, there needs to be a set of design patterns for the individual services that plug into this UI shell so that end users can move from one module of the application to another without new learning.  Finally, all of these layers need to be customizable in an easy way that insulates IT from patching and upgrading problems and allows the business owners the agility to quickly change with the market conditions.As Oracle has already announced, we will release our next generation of enterprise applications called Oracle Fusion Applications.  We have thousands of developers building these applications that all had different programming tool experience and UI design experience.  We've educated over 6,000 developers building Oracle Fusion Applications to leverage these Common User Experience Architecture patterns to speed their learning curve of the new Java standards as well as SOA principles to deliver a revolutionary new set of applications.  You could imagine the big challenge with getting all these developers with different backgrounds and different UI design skills to deliver a completely integrated application user experience.  This is why Oracle invested heavily in designing this Common User Experience Architecture, based on Oracle WebCenter and the Oracle Application Development Framework (ADF).  It pulls together the best practices and design patterns that Oracle development required in order to bring Fusion Applications to market and Oracle WebCenter is the user experience layer that all of this is surfaced through.  In this way, customers can quickly brand a deployment for new partnerships without having to redevelop a new site.  Or they can quickly add new options to the UI Shell to enable their line of business managers to quickly adapt to a new competitive product.  And with the core integration of the activities to produce a Business Activity Stream, customers are able to stay on top of all their key business actions when they happen as they happen and more importantly, the system can recommend actions or resources to help act on these activities.And we've authored this whole set of design patterns for Oracle development to take advantage of in delivering Fusion Applications.  We're also applying these design patterns to our existing eBusiness Suite, Peoplesoft, Siebel, and JD Edwards applications so that they can tie in the exact same way that Fusion Applications has been brought together.  This will provide customers with a complete Common User Experience Architecture for their entire ecosystem of applications within their enterprise whether they are from Oracle, another vender, or custom built applications. • Combine the Address & Search Bars in Firefox

  The Search Bar in Firefox is very useful for finding additional information or images while browsing but the UI space it takes up can be frustrating at times. Now you can reclaim that UI space and still have access to all that searching goodness with the Foobar extension. Note: This is about the Foobar Firefox extension and not to be confused with Foobar2000 the open source music player. Before If you have the “Search Bar” displayed there is no doubt that it is taking up valuable space in your browser’s UI. What you need is the ability to reclaim that UI space and still have the same access to your search capability as before…no more sacrificing one for a gain with the other. After As soon as you have installed the extension you can see that the top part of your browser will look much sleeker without the “Search Bar” to clutter it up. The “Search Engine Icon” will now be visible inside of your “Address Bar” as seen here. You will be able to access the same “Search Engine Menu” as before by clicking on the “Search Engine Icon”. There are two display modes for search results (setting available in the “Options”). The first one shown here is “Simple Mode” where all results are in a condensed format. Notice that not only are there search suggestions but also “Bookmarks & History” listings as well. You can literally get the best of both when conducting a search. Note: The number of entries for search suggestions and bookmark/history listings can be adjusted higher or lower in the “Options”. The second one is “Rich Mode” where the results are shown with more details. Choose the “mode” that best suits your personal style. For our first example you can see the results when we conducted a quick search on “Windows 7” (using the first of the three offerings shown from Bing). Our second example was a search for “Flowers” using our Photobucket search engine. Once again nice results opened in a new tab for us. Options The options are easy to go through. It is really nice to be able to choose the number of results that you want displayed and the format that you want them shown in. Note: Changing the “Suggestion popup style” will require a browser restart to take effect. Conclusion If you love using the “Search Bar” in Firefox but want to reclaim the UI space then you will definitely want to add this extension to your browser. The ability to customize the number of results and choose the formatting make this extension even better. • Web Service Example - Part 3: Asynchronous

  In this edition of the ADF Mobile blog we'll tackle part 3 of our Web Service examples.  In this posting we'll take a look at firing the web service asynchronously and then filling in the UI when it completes.  This can be useful when you have data on the device in a local store and want to show that to the user while the application uses lazy loading from a web service to load more data. Getting the sample code: Just click here to download a zip of the entire project.  You can unzip it and load it into JDeveloper and deploy it either to iOS or Android.  Please follow the previous blog posts if you need help getting JDeveloper or ADF Mobile installed.  Note: This is a different workspace than WS-Part2 What's different? In this example, when you click the Search button on the Forecast By Zip option, now it takes you directly to the results page, which is initially blank.  When the web service returns a second or two later the data pops into the UI.  If you go back to the search page and hit Search it will again clear the results and invoke the web service asynchronously.  This isn't really that useful for this particular example but it shows an important technique that can be used for other use cases. How it was done 1)  First we created a new class, ForecastWorker, that implements the Runnable interface.  This is used as our worker class that we create an instance of and pass to a new thread that we create when the Search button is pressed inside the retrieveForecast actionListener handler.  Once the thread is started, the retrieveForecast returns immediately.  2)  The rest of the code that we had previously in the retrieveForecast method has now been moved to the retrieveForecastAsync.  Note that we've also added synchronized specifiers on both these methods so they are protected from re-entrancy. 3)  The run method of the ForecastWorker class then calls the retrieveForecastAsync method.  This executes the web service code that we had previously, but now on a separate thread so the UI is not locked.  If we had already shown data on the screen it would have appeared before this was invoked.  Note that you do not see a loading indicator either because this is on a separate thread and nothing is blocked. 4)  The last but very important aspect of this method is that once we update data in the collections from the data we retrieve from the web service, we call AdfmfJavaUtilities.flushDataChangeEvents().   We need this because as data is updated in the background thread, those data change events are not propagated to the main thread until you explicitly flush them.  As soon as you do this, the UI will get updated if any changes have been queued. Summary of Fundamental Changes In This Application The most fundamental change is that we are invoking and handling our web services in a background thread and updating the UI when the data returns.  This allows an application to provide a better user experience in many cases because data that is already available locally is displayed while lengthy queries or web service calls can be done in the background and the UI updated when they return.  There are many different use cases for background threads and this is just one example of optimizing the user experience and generating a better mobile application.

• jqGrid Coloring an entire line in Grid based upon a cells value

  Hi all, i know it's been asked before but i cant get it to run and i'm out of things to try. So i want to colorize a row in a Grid if its value is not 1 - i use a custom formatter for this. The formatter itself works, thats not the problem. I've tried multple ways I've found so far on the web - adding a class, directly adding css code, using setRowData, using setCell.... • Asp.Net membership via ASP.NET Website Administrator Tool

  I created a database with aspnet_regsql, the database was created in sql sever 2008 and not in data folder in my project (do I need to move it to the folder manually?). Next, in Web Site Administration Tool I went to provider section and clicked don Test button. I got an error: Could not establish a connection to the database. If you have not yet created the SQL Server database, exit the Web Site Administration tool, use the aspnet_regsql command-line utility to create and configure the database, and then return to this tool to set the provider. Maybe I need to set something in a web.config, like membership settings or connection strings (or ASP.NET Website Administrator Tool should create those settings for me)? Update: Maybe it happens because I am using SQL server 2008 full and not express? Update 2: After setting membership section and connection string to my aspnetdb database in Web Site Administration Tool I've opened security-Security Setup Wizard-Define Roles (stage 4) I got this error: An error was encountered. Please return to the previous page and try again. • remove a:hover using javascript (not using jquery... don't ask)

  I thought this would be pretty simple.... Basically, it's a 5-star rating system. When a user clicks, for example, three stars... I want to freeze those three stars right where they're at. I've been trying to simply remove the hover for the a href so it stays what it was at... maybe that's not the right method. I've exhausted absolutely everything I can think of... By the way this is straight javascript, not jquery or anything. It's crazy, I know but all of the JS was written straight.... • GWT: uiBinder-based widget cant be instanced second time

  Hi. I created a widget using GWT uiBinder. It works fine, till the moment when I want to instance it second time. After i call constructor second time it returns only raw description from XML and statements in constructor (rootElement.add( new HTML( "panel1" ), leftId );) are just don't work. It throws no error or warning.   I'm writing a GWT widget using UIBinder and MVP. The widget's default styles are defined in TheWidgetView.ui.xml: <ui:style type="com.widgetlib.spinner.display.TheWidgetView.MyStyle"> .textbox { border: 1px solid #red; } .important { font-weight: bold; } </ui:style> The widget's CssResource interface is defined in TheWidgetView.java: public class TheWidgetView extends HorizontalPanel implements TheWidgetPresenter.Display { // ... some code @UiField MyStyle style; public interface MyStyle extends CssResource { String textbox(); String important(); } // ... more code } I'd like the consumer of this widget to be able to customize part of the widget's styles and to have this in their MyExample.ui.xml: <ui:style type="com.consumer.MyExample.MyStyle"> .textbox { border: 2px solid #black; } </ui:style> And this be their MyExample.java: public class MyExample extends Composite { // ... some code @UiField MyStyle style; interface MyStyle extends TheWidgetView.MyStyle{ String textbox(); } // ... more code } Is there a way that my widget can have default styles, but that the consumer of the widget can override one of them? When an interface extends TheWidgetView.MyStyle, the of the widget consumer needs to define all the styles listed in that parent interface. I've seen some widget libraries have the widget's constructor take in a ClientBundle as parameter, which I suppose could apply to CssResource. Although, I'm not sure how I'd pass in this style object in a constructor invoked by UIBinder. Thanks much in advance!
