• REST or Non-REST on Internal Services

  I'm curious if others have chosen to implement some services internally at their companies as non-REST (SOAP, Thrift, Proto Buffers, etc...) as a way to auto-generate client libraries/wrappers? I'm on a two year project. I will be writing maybe 40 services over that period with my team. 10% of those services definitely make sense as REST services, but the other 90% feel more like they could be done in REST or RPC style. Of these 90%, 100% will be .NET talking to .NET. When I think about all the effort to have my devs develop client "wrappers" for REST services I cringe. WADL or RSDL don't seem to have enough mindshare. Thoughts? Any good discussions of this "internal service" issue online? If you have struggled with this what general rules for determining REST or non-REST have you used?

• Web Frameworks caring about persistence?

  I have noticed that Play! Framework encompasses persistence strategy (like JPA etc...) Why would a web framework care about persistence ?! Indeed, this would be the job of the server-sides components (like EJB etc...), wouldn't this? Otherwise, client would be too coupled with server's business logic. UPDATE: One answer would be : it's more likely used for simple application including itself the whole business logics. However, for large applications with well-designed layers(services, domain, DAO's etc..), persistence is not recommended within web client layer since there would be several different web(or not) clients.

  Flash has come a long way in the last decade, and it's a well-kept secret getting a flash game to connect to a multi-client server for chat and/or basic avatar movement in real time. Why has the industry as a whole not made this a common-knowledge type of thing yet? We keep pushing to the web but I am finding it incredibly difficult gathering learning material on this subject. Sure, I can find multi-client server socket tutorials in various languages (using select statements and/or threads to handle multiple socket connections), but in regards to Flash applications inside of a browser? NOPE! Can everyone please share what they know? :] It's a subject I'd really love to get into but I'm afraid I just honestly don't know enough about how to do it. Thanks!

  is there a solution to the low screen brightness issue with the Eee PC and release 12.04? When I use the brightness control, the screen goes through three adjustment cycles of dark to semi bright, but never gets to bright. As you index the control up, brightness increases, then suddenly cuts back to dark. use the brightness button to further increase the brightness and the same cycle happens. As though there are three distinct brightness events, each one setting back to low level. Under no circumstances other than initial boot up can you get to a bright screen. I just finished installing 12.04 on two Acer (Gateway netbooks) with no brightness issue. Just on the Eee PC

  I realize that this may spur a religious discussion, but I discussed this with friends and get great, but conflicting answers and the actual documentation is of little help. What does the 500 series response codes mean from the webserver? Internal Server Error, but that is vague. My assumption is that it means that something bad happened to the server (file system corruption, no connection to the database, network issue, etc.) but not specifically a data driven error (divide by zero, record missing, bad parameter, etc). Something to note, there are some web client implementations (the default Android and Blackberry httpclients) that do not allow access to the html boddy if the server response is 500 so there is no way to determine what caused the issue from the client. What I have been been implementing recently is a web service that returns a json payload wrapped in a response object that contains more specific error information if it is data related, but the server response will be 200 since it finished the actual processing. Thoughts?

  I have a custom Ubuntu 12.10 configuration (started out as a minimal installation of Ubuntu 12.04 with a number of other packages such as Gnome Shell selectively installed via apt-get and then upgraded to 12.10). (Almost) everything works just fine. However, the lock screen (Gnome screensaver) does not expose a UI to control music playback. Whenever I have Rhythmbox running in the background I cannot pause music playback without unlocking the screen. Obviously some package(s) or configuration bits are not present but I am not able to figure out what needs to be added or done in order to enable playback control in the lock screen. Any idea what I might be missing? Ideally I would not like to install Ubuntu desktop only to get music controls in the Gnome lock screen.

  I'm trying to install bash as the default shell on a ARM Linux running on an embedded device (Synology DS212+ NAS). But there's something really wrong, and I can't figure out what it is. Symptoms: 1) Root has /bin/bash as default shell, and can log in normally via SSH: $ grep root /etc/passwd root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash $ ssh root@NAS root@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:06:56 2012 from desktop # 2) joeuser has /bin/bash as default shell, and receives "Permission denied" when trying to log in via SSH: $ grep joeuser /etc/passwd joeuser:x:1029:100:Joe User:/home/joeuser:/bin/bash $ ssh joeuser@localhost joeuser@NAS's password: Last login: Sun Dec 16 14:07:22 2012 from desktop Permission denied, please try again. Also a su - joeuser as root works fine, so the bash binary itself is working fine. In an act of despair, I changed joeuser's uid to 0 on /etc/passwd, but also didn't work, so it doesn't seem to be anything permission related. Seems that bash is doing some extra checking that sshd didn't like, and blocking the connections for non-root users. Maybe some sort of sanity checking - or terminal emulation - that is triggering the SIGCHLD, but only when called via ssh. I already went through every single item on sshd_config, and also put SSHD in debug mode, but didn't find anything strange. • Can't connect VPN/add new VPN connection on 12.04 when using NX

  I remote control my Ubuntu box using NX. I am trying to create a new VPN connection. I click on Configure VPN ? Add ? OpenVPN ? Create then I get a "Editing VPN connection 1" window but everything is grayed out, and I can't edit it. The only button I can click is Cancel. The reason I bring up NX is because if I plug in a monitor keyboard and mouse, I can create, edit import VPN connections just fine. So I imported all the different VPN connections, everything was fine. I then remoted back into the Ubuntu machine with NX, click on my VPN connection, and get VPN Connection Failed - The VPN CONNECTION failed to start. Not authorized to control networking. I then disconnected and reconnected NX, and now all the VPN connections I had imported are gone. Any ideas?

• Branching and Merging Improvements in TFS2010

  Introducing the concept of “first class branches” is a significant improvement as part of the 2010 release with respect to version control.  Not only does it help to distinguish between folders and branches, but it enables branch visualizations. Let us see improvements in detail. ·         In TFS2008, you don’t know which of the folders are Branches: All folders looks the same, all have the folder icon. Now, In TFS 2010 there is a new icon that shows which of the folder is a Branch.       ·      There is no visual means to manage branches in TFS2008:   You dont have any means to identify which branches are related and the relation type. Now, In TFS 2010 you have visual tools to see the Branches Hierarchy. In order to see a Branch Hierarchy just Right Click the Branch and choose: Branching and Merging –> View Hierarchy     ·         In TFS2008, there is no option to track changes path between the Branches:  If you have made a merge in a Branch you can’t track from which Branch this Merge came from. Now, you have the tools that shows the path of change between the Branches, you can also see where change was added on a timeline.  In order to track a change do the following: Step1: Right click the Branch and click View History   Step 2: Choose a changeset to track and click the “Track Changeset” button.     Step 3: Choose the branches that will be in the view and click “Visualize”. In above visual, you can see that Changesets 108,109,110 and 119 where merged from Main to Release1.0 Branch and then “Release_1.0” Branched to “Dev1.0. Step4: You can also see the Merges on a Timeline by clicking on the “Timeline Tracking” button.   Creating New Branches: In TFS 2010, the creation of branches has been streamlined a bit from the process in 2008.  In 2008, creating a new branch was like every other action in the system – changes were pended on the client, and then checked in to the server. Because of this creating new branch in TFS2008 was time-consuming process.  In TFS2010, the step where changes are pended has been bypassed and now performing the branch creation is entirely on the server.  With this approach, the round trip time for downloading a copy of each file on the branch and then uploading each file again has been eliminated.  Note: In TFS2010, the new branch will be created and committed as a single operation on the server. Pending changes will not be created, it doesn’t require a check-in as it will be carried out as a single operation and it’s not possible to cancel.     Manage Branch Permissions: The properties view for branches is also different than that of ordinary folders or file, containing some metadata for the branch, relationship information, and permissions for the branch. In TFS2008, the users who have checkout and Check-in permissions can create a branch. But, In TFS2010 you can control the permissions for Branches using Manage Branch permissions.   Reparent option in TFS2010: In TFS2008, if we have two branches which don’t have parent-child relation and we want perform merge between these two branches then we have to perform baseless merge using tf.exe command line. I have two branches Release_1.0 and Dev1.0_F2 which don’t have any relation between them, that’s why when I click on merge option in Release_1.0, in Target Branch it’s not showing Dev1.0_F2 branch to perform the merges.     Let us see what can we do for this in TFS2010, first perform a TFS baseless merge to establish a relationship between the parent branch and the child branches.  It will only merge the folder, not its contents. TFS baseless merges are performed via the command line using VS2010 command prompt and do the following:   tf merge /baseless <ParentBranch> <childBranch> Check in your pending changes. It will create the link between the branches but the relationships are still not completed.  Now, select the child branch in Source Control Explorer and from the File menu choose Source Control –> Branching and Merging –> Reparent.      In the dialog box,  choose the appropriate branch as the new parent.   Click Reparent and then go to parent branch and click merge. Now, will see that in Target Branch option Dev1.0_F2 branch is added.         Converting Folders to Branches and Branches to Folders: You can convert any Folder as Branch from Context Menu by performing right click on the folderàBranching and MergingàConvert to Branch. In similar way, you can convert the Branches to Folder using Convert to Folder option available in File Menu (FileàSource ControlàBranching and MergingàConvert to Branch). This option is not available in context menu.

• Debugging .NET code called from X++ code in AX 2012

  A very intriguing issue came to me to debug .Net code called from X++ code in AX 2012. This was indeed a challenge to be nailed down. Luckily the tools and some concepts helped me to achieve this task. Here it goes... We need to do a seamless debugging from AX debugger to Visual Studio back and forth. To enable this we need to first see if the dll to be debug is present in GAC then we might need to uninstall it from it due to the order of preference .NET loads the assemblies. The assemblies are first loaded from GAC and then the runtime checks for Public and Private Assemblies. Since the assembly in GAC is always compiled with runtime optimizations it is difficult to debug. We need to unhook this assembly from GAC and then move further relying on >NET assembly loading patterns. Step 1: Remove the target assembly to debug from GAC. Before that stop all the AOS servers and close all the instances of programs which rely on AOT e.g. all clients and even visual studio now. Step 2: Build your sample code which is present in AOT in debug mode and get the dll file along with PDB files. Step 3: Place these files in the Server\..\Bin and Client\bin directories of AX installation. Step 4: Configure Visual Studio: Step 4.1: Configure Debugging Options. In Visual Studio Go to Debug -> Options and Settings -> Debug node -> General sub node and disable “Enable Just My Code (managed)” Step 4.2: Specify the symbol loading directory options. Specify the locations for Client bin and server bin directories of the installation, remember to specify the correct instance of Server bin directory corresponding to your AOS. Step 4.3: Configure the project for debugging Step 5: Ready to go place your breakpoints in X++ and in .Net wherever necessary before this process... Run the Visual studio project and it will invoke the AX client with your breakpoint hitting X++ code.. and when you do a step-in using F11 the Visual studio debugger will be active and from here onwards you would be able to debug the complete flow. Debugging in seamless manner across debuggers is really very good feature and mostly underutilized, but by doing so we can have improved troubleshooting and saves a hell lot of time.. • How do I get brightness controls working properly on an Eee PC 1001P?

  Is there a solution to the low screen brightness issue with the Eee PC 1001P and release 12.04? When I use the brightness control, the screen goes through three adjustment cycles of dark to semi bright, but never gets to bright. As you index the control up, brightness increases, then suddenly cuts back to dark. use the brightness button to further increase the brightness and the same cycle happens. As though there are three distinct brightness events, each one setting back to low level. Under no circumstances other than initial boot up can you get to a bright screen. I just finished installing 12.04 on two Acer (Gateway netbooks) with no brightness issue. Just on the Eee PC 1001P Eee PC model is 1001P
