• wcf trying to set up tracing to debug, not writing to log file

  here's my web.config, running a WCF service in an application on IIS7, but nothing is being written to the specified file. permission on the file has been granted for everyone. </listeners> I can add a service reference just fine. I then try to call the service from a windows app and, after a few minutes, get an error on the machine running the windows app "Client is unable to finish the security negotiation within the configured timeout (00:00:00). The current negotiation leg is 1 (00:00:00)." but absolutely nothing is written to the trace log file specified in config. • What are the most time consuming checks performed by .NET when executing a managed appplication?

  I've developed a .NET based Windows service that uses part managed (C#) and unmanaged code (C/C++ libraries). In some domain environments (e.g. Win 2k3 32bit server inside domain abc.com) sometimes the service takes more than 30 seconds to start (especially on OS restart), thus failing to start the service. I suspect that it has something to do with enterprise level security but I do not know for sure. http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa720255%28VS.71%29.aspx I've tried the following without success: - delay loading references by moving the using directives as far as possible from the servicebase implementation (especially the xml namespace - know to cause delays in loading) - delay loading and configuring log4net - precompiling the code by using ngen - delaying the start of the worker thread - add/remove manifest + decencies set inside - sign/unsign the binaries - use the configuration settings (there are a lot of settings and the scope level for all is set to application ) as later as possible - add all dependencies to GAC I didn't tried yet to add security demands for the class that has the Main method implemented. I didn't tries to implement my own configuration loader because after inspecting the autogenerated code, I've noticed that the setting class is a singletone and it gets its instance on call. By completely removing the log4net dependency it worked, but this is not an option. When the network card is disabled the service starts immediately. Any suggestions/comments/solution you have would be most welcomed.

• What's the best way to learn .NET?

  I've been developing Java EE for quite a while now. I've used WebLogic, Tomcat, Spring, and Hibernate extensively, so I have a mental model of what features are available and how things are developed and deployed. The problem that I have with .NET is that I don't have a clear mapping of its features onto Java EE. Here's what I know so far: Java EE - .NET Java - C# JAR - DLL WAR - ? (deployment in general) EAR - ? (deployment in general) Tomcat - IIS web server JSP - ASP? JDBC - ODBC JMS - MSMQ JTA - Microsoft Transaction Manager So much of the functionality that WebLogic handles appears to be dispersed throughout the Windows OS. My confusion kicks in when I see the waves of books at Borders - VB.NET, ASP.NET, C#, etc. If I'm not a VB programmer, would it be possible to stick with C# and write enterprise apps that are the equivalent of what I'm used to with Java EE? If there were a Top Three list of books to learn from, what would they be? • How to get notified about changes on SharePoint groups.

  Hi, I'm actual looking for a way to get notified about any changes on a SharePoint group. First I though I would be able to this by attaching a event handler to some kind of group list. But unfortunately there are no such list representing SharePoint groups. My second attempt was to bind a event handler to the content type SharePointGroup but this didn't work either. So are there any other options to get notified about events on a SharePoint group? Bye, Flo EDIT: Thanks for the reply so far. I forgot to mention that I've already googled and read about the user information list. Sorry. First I found a forum entry where they post the relative URL to the user information list (_catalogs/users/simple.aspx). When I'm using this link to see the list,it only contains users and no groups. I don't know but perhaps this link does some filtering on the list. The other information I found about in several blog and forum posts was that a event handler attached to the user information list are not fired up on an events. I have to admit after reading that it doesn't work so many times and even on MSDN (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa979520.aspx), I didn't try it on my own. The problem attaching the event handler to the content type wasn't the attaching thing, the handler simply didn't get fired when I for example changed a group name or deleted a user from the group. I don't have an idea why the handler doesn't get called I pretty sure I implemented the right methods and attached them to the right events. Any other suggestions how to get informed about changes on SharePoint groups?

  I'd like to create a MSBuild project that reflects the project dependencies in a solution and wraps the VS projects inside reusable targets. The problem I like solve doing this is to svn-export, build and deploy a specific assembly (and its dependencies) in an BizTalk application. My question is: How can I make the targets for svn-exporting, building and deploying reusable and also reuse the wrapped projects when they are built for different dependencies? I know it would be simpler to just build the solution and deploy only the assemblies needed but I'd like to reuse the targets as much as possible.   I'm writing a small ajax class for personal use. In the class, I have a "post" method for sending post requests. The post method has a callback parameter. In the onreadystatechange propperty, I need to call the callback method.   I've written a program that edits a specific filetype , and I want to give the user the option to set my application as the default editor for this filetype (since I don't want an installer) on startup. • Fill in word form field with more than 255 characters

  I am trying to programmaticly fill in a microsoft word form. I am successfully able to do so if the string is under 255 chars with the following code below, however it says the string is too long if i try and use a string over 255 chars... How do I get past this limitation? If I open the word doc in word I can type in more than 255 chars without a problem. • ASP.NET web setup class is not defined

  Hi, I've got an ASP.NET application that I installed by creating a web setup. I ran into a problem where ASP.NET wasn't registered with IIS so it gave me a "installation was interrupted" message that told me exactly nothing. Anyhow, I finally got it installed, and I can access the main page, but it's telling me that my class isn't defined. The dll is in the same directory as the Default.aspx page Here's the main error information Compiler Error Message: BC30002: Type 'SIValidator.SIValidator' is not defined. • Thoughts on GoGrid vs EC2

  I am currently hosting my SaaS application at GoGrid (Microsoft stack). Here's what I have: Database Server - physical box, 12 GB RAM, 2 X Quad Core CPU (2.13 GHz Xeon E5506) 2 Web / App servers - cloud servers, 2 GB RAM, 2 VCPUs 300 GB monthly bandwidth I am paying around $900 / month for this. My web / app servers are busting at the seams and need to be upgraded to 4 GB of RAM. I also need a firewall, and GoGrid just added this service for an additional $200. After the upgrade, I will be paying around $1,400. I started looking at Amazon EC2, specifically this config: Database server - "High Memory Double Extra Large Instance" - 34 GB RAM, 13 EC2 compute units 2 Web / App servers - "Large Instance" - 7.5 GB RAM, 4 EC2 compute units If I go with 1 year reserved instances, my upfront cost would be $4,500 and my monthly would be $700. This comes to $1,075 / month when amortized. Amazon also includes a firewall for free. Here are my questions: Do any of you have experience running a database (especially SQL Server) on an EC2 instance? How did it perform compared to a dedicated machine? One of my major concerns is with disk I/O. Amazon's description of a compute unit is fairly vague. Any ideas on how the CPU performance on the database servers would compare? I am hoping that the Amazon solution will provide significantly better performance than my current or even improved GoGrid setup. Having a virtual database server would also be nice in terms of availability. Right now I would be in serious trouble if I had any hardware issues. Thanks for any insight...

• Reading from a database located in the Program Files folder using ODBC

  We have an application that stores its database files in a subfolder of the Program Files directory. These files are redirected to the VirtualStore in Vista and Windows 7. We represent data from the database using Microsoft DataReports (VB6). So far so good. But we now want to use Crystal Reports XI to represent data from the database. Our idea is to NOT pass this data to CR from our program, but to have CR retreive it from the database using a a system DSN through ODBC. In this way we hope to present our users with more flexibility in designing their own reports. What we do want to ensure though is that these system DSNs are configured correctly when the user installs our program or when the program calls the Crystal Report. Is there a smart way to do this using System variables for instance, instead of having to write a routine that checks for OS-version, whether UAC is enabled on the OS, whether the write restrictions on the Program Files folder have been lifted, etc and then adapts he System DSN to point to either the C:\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder, or the C:\Users\User\AppData\VirtualStore\Program Files\OurApp\Data folder? Suggestions for an entirely different approach are welcome too!

If I add `break' at the end of DLL_PROCESS_ATTACH block, the DLL failed to work. How can this happen?

• How to get smartcard reader name in Windows 7 using C# or C/C++?

  Hi! I'm trying to make a C# program which will use a C .dll (unfortunately, the .dll doesn't have good documentation) to access a smart card. One of the functions of the .dll uses name of the reader as argument. My problem is that I don't know how to get the name. After looking for answers I found something similar to what I need in an example here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa379803%28VS.85%29.aspx I'm looking for a way to get szReader value as described in the aforementioned example using C#. Can anyone help me or at least point me in the right direction? EDIT: Looks like nobody knows the answer so I'll expand the question: How do I get smartcard reader name using C/C++ and Windows API? I've read through MSDN site for smartcard API, but I couldn't find the function which will list readers. My idea is now to make a C/C++ .dll which will get in-between the smartcard .dll and C# program. It will produce list of readers, let user chose one and call the smartcard .dll using chosen name as argument.

• Helpful advice on developing a professional MS Word add-on

  A few months back I put together a simple proof-of-concept piece of software for a small firm with an idea for a document editing tool. The company wanted this tool to be integrated into Microsoft Word, understandably, to maximize its accessibility to the average user. I essentially wrote the underlying library with all of the core functionality as a C# project, and then used VSTO to get it running inside of Word. It felt like a bit of a duct tape solution, really; but then, I have (practically) zero experience developing tools for integration with MS Office, and it was only a proof of concept anyway. Well, the firm was quite pleased with my work overall, and they're looking to move from "proof of concept" to the real deal. Fortunately, as I said, the core functionality is all there and will only need to be somewhat tweaked and enhanced. My main concern is figuring out how to put together an application that will integrate with MS Word in a clean and polished way, and which can be deployed easily in accordance with a regular user's expectations (i.e., simply running an install program and voila, it's there in Word). I seem to remember reading somewhere that nobody uses VSTO for real professional projects. Is this true? False? What are the alternatives? And what are the tips and gotchas that I should be aware of before getting started on this issue of MS Word integration?

  Hi I have a ASP.NET website. If I make a request for a page it works most of the times, but sometimes I get an HttpUnhandledException. I have tried to log the errors, but from the errors messages I'm not able to solve the problem. • Prevent TEXTAREAs scroll by themselves on IE8

  IE8 has a known bug (per connect.microsoft.com) where typing or pasting text into a TEXTAREA element will cause the textarea to scroll by itself. This is hugely annoying and shows up in many community sites, including Wikipedia. The repro is this: open the HTML below with IE8 (or use any long page on wikipedia which will exhibit the same problem until they fix it) size the browser full-screen paste a few pages of text into the TEXTAREA move the scrollbar to the middle position now type one character into the textarea Expected: nothing happens Actual: scrossing happens on its own, and the insertion point ends up near the bottom of the textarea! • How to define custom path to Interop *.dll

  Well, I have an ActiveX (*.ocx) component, and i use it in a managed C++/CLI project: write a managed wrapper around ActiveX component[ NET has a great Interop services : provides me genarated dll so i can easily use it in my managed code] The problem is that Visual Studio (2008) automatically copy the generated Interop *.dll to the directory where my *.exe file stay.But i want put all my genarated Interop *.dll to a folder ... Suppose My directory structure is so: D:\MyProject\Output\MyProject.exe //My mamanged exe D:\MyProject\Output\Interop.XXXLib.1.0.dll // *Interop .dll I want to put Interop.XXXLib.1.0.dll into new folder D:\MyProject\Output\Interops and use it from that directory...How Can i do it? • IE not rendering div contents

  I've written an app using HTML 5 and I wan't to show an error box instead of the page when someone visits from IE. When it detects navigator.appName as Microsoft Internet Explorer it hides everything and shows the error div that started out hidden. The div is as follows: <div id='ieerror' style='display:none;width:500px;height:500px;border:3px solid #ff0000;position:absolute;top:50%;left:50%;margin-top:-250px;margin-left:-250px;'> <center> <h1 style='font-size: 30px;'>Internet Explorer is not supported by Aud!</h1><br /><br /> <p>Internet Explorer does not support HTML 5 and therefore this application cannot run.<br /> Please upgrade your browser. We suggest <a href='http://www.google.com/chrome'>Google Chrome</a>!</p> </center> </div> The problem is that when I visit the page in IE, the div pops up with the border, but it has no contents. Nothing is inside of it. I went to view->source and looked at it, and the code is still there, but none of it is rendered. How do I fix this?

• SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services (x64) on Windows 2K8 -> CleanCurrentUserName() not found

  I have installed SQL Server 2005 three times now on the same box. I cleaned up registry settings, files, you name it. All along I have been trying to install SQL Server 2005 Database and Reporting Services (x64) on a Windows 2008 Server. I have also applied the SP3 patch. Installing and Restarting the Server at every point. I have installed multiple instances (SQLDEV64, SQLQA64, SQLSTAGE64) of the Database and Reporting Services. I started to go through the Reporting Services Configuration manager, installing the Reporting Database along with setting up IIS. When I go test the website I get the following and there lies my question. How can I get around this error? http://localhost/reportserver Reporting Services Error -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An internal error occurred on the report server. See the error log for more details. (rsInternalError) Method not found: 'Void Microsoft.ReportingServices.Diagnostics.UserUtil.CleanCurrentUserName()'. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SQL Server Reporting Services Any help would be greatly appreciated.

• How to run White + SL4 UATs through TeamCity?

  After experiencing a series of unpleasant issues with TFS, including source code orruption and project management inflexibility, we (meaning the project team of which I'm a part) have decided to move from TFS 2010 to TeamCity + SVN + V1. I've managed to get our MSTest component and unit tests running as part of every build. However, our UATs are failing, and I was hoping for some advice from the TeamCity community as to best practices w.r.t. running web servers and interacting with the desktop. Each of our UAT fixtures starts a web server to host the site, like this: public static void StartWebServer() { var pathToSite = @"C:\projects\myproject\FrontEnd\MyProject.FrontEnd.Web"; var webServer = new Process { StartInfo = new ProcessStartInfo { Arguments = string.Format("/port:9150 /path:\"{0}\"", pathToSite), FileName = @"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\DevServer\10.0\WebDev.WebServer40.EXE" } }; webServer.Start(); } Needless to say, this doesn't work when running through TeamCity, as the pathToSite value is different each time. I'm hoping there is a way of determining the path into which the the code is checked out prior to building? That would allow me to point the web server at the right place. The other issue is that our UATs use White to drive the Silverlight UI through an instance of Internet Explorer: _browserWindow = InternetExplorer.Launch("http://localhost:9150/index.html#/Home", "Home - Windows Internet Explorer"); _document = _browserWindow.SilverlightDocument; I've ensured that the TeamCity service is granted the ability to interact with the desktop, and I've set the build agent machine up to log in automatically (an open session is a pre-requisite for White to work properly). Is that all I need to do or are there additional steps required?

• C# class design - expose variables for reading but not setting

  I have a a polygon class which stores a list of Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Vector2 as the vertices of the polygon. Once the polygon is created, I'd like other classes to be able to read the position of the vertices, but not change them. I am currently exposing the vertices through this field: /// <summary> /// Gets the vertices stored for this polygon. /// </summary> public List<Vector2> Vertices { get { return _vertices; } } List<Vector2> _vertices; However you can change any vertex using code like: Polygon1.Vertices[0] = new Vector2(0, 0); or Polygon1.Vertices[0].X = 0; How can I limit other classes to be able to only read the properties of these vertices, and not be able to set a new one to my List? The only thing I can think of is to pass a copy to classes that request it. Note that Vector2 is a struct that is part of the XNA framework and I cannot change it. Thanks.
