  This afternoon I found myself kicking around in Vegas after MIX waiting for a flight to San Francisco. I was looking through the photos from MIX10 and thought it appropriate to have a little fun. Since Scott Guthrie embodied this years MIX event I thought Id turn the Gu into the poster child for the event (literally). • Composite Moon Map Offers Stunning Views of the Lunar Surface [Astronomy]

  Researchers at Arizona State University have stitched together a massive high-resolution map of the moon; seen the moon in astounding detail. Using images fro the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) they carefully stitch a massive map of the moon with a higher resolution than the public has ever seen before: The WAC has a pixel scale of about 75 meters, and with an average altitude of 50 km, a WAC image swath is 70 km wide across the ground-track. Because the equatorial distance between orbits is about 30 km, there is nearly complete orbit-to-orbit stereo overlap all the way around the Moon, every month. Using digital photogrammetric techniques, a terrain model was computed from this stereo overlap. Hit up the link below to check out the images and the process they used.   I have no idea why this is happening. An example http://www.londonofficespace.com/ofdj17062004934429t.htm Title tag is: Unfurnished Office Space Wimbledon – Serviced Office on Lombard Road SW19 But is indexed as: Lombard Road – SW19 - London Office Space If you look in the source code and search for this portion ‘Lombard Road – SW19’ You then find that it's next to an office image alt=’Lombard Road – SW19’. The only thing I could think of is that the spider somehow ‘skips’ our title tag and grabs this bit, and then inserts the name of the site (but WHY?) Is there anything I can do with this? or is this a Google behaviour?

• Hide 'Your profile could not be opened correctly'

  Hello! I have a small public internet cafe, with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10. I'm using Google Chrome 7.0.517.44 (64615), with AutoScroll - Version: 2.7.5; AdBlock is removed because of high CPU loads, and unconfortable speed of machine. "Your profile could not be opened correctly" error is displayed: This image is only an illustration. The reason is that I changed permissions of some config files, to don't remember the history, there are no setting in options, to don't use history. I've been removed write permission to: ~/.config/google-chrome$ find . -group nopasswdlogin ./Default/Archived History ./Default/History ./Default/Visited Links When I solved all of my problem, I'll remove some other write permission, this is a public place. What methods are known to HIDE this message? Thanks!

• How to remove individual webapps from Launcher

  Today my launcher looks like a long vertical bar of icons. I have 14 webapp icons on the launcher but there is no option to remove them or an option to no include them (Or even an option to merge them as I asked in a previous question). Is there an option, without having to disable the whole webapp idea, to remove individual webapps from the launcher. Forgot to add that the option to Unlock from Launcher does not appear, but only on the webapps. On the rest of the launcher icons it appears correctly.   I installed Kubuntu image long time ago, and did several release upgrades since that. I have package kubuntu-full installed, and boot into KDE. Currently it looks like I'm using ubuntu: ~: lsb_release -a No LSB modules are available. Distributor ID: Ubuntu Description: Ubuntu 13.10 Release: 13.10 Codename: saucy There's not a single kubuntu word in my /etc/apt/sources.list, or is it Kubuntu = Ubuntu - Unity + KDE now? For example there's a Pre-Alpha Ubuntu Thar already, but no Kubuntu one. Would I get Kubuntu Thar, by installing Ubuntu Thar in the way mentioned above? Probably Kubuntu team now are the guys responsible for KDE working in Ubuntu.

  I'm trying to implement a skybox into my engine, and I'm having some trouble loading the image as a cube map. Everything works (but it doesn't look right) if I don't load using an ImageLoadInformation struct in the ShaderResourceView.FromFile() method, but it breaks if I do. I need to, of course, because I need to tell SlimDX to load it as a cubemap. How can I fix this? • Ubuntu USB boot failure

  When trying to boot from a boot USB drive I got the message, "Vesamenu.c32:Not a com32r image." I was trying to boot a fairly new Toshiba laptop with a Ubuntu 10.04.2 LTS created USB boot. I re-created the USB drive with 11.04 and it booted fine. These were both 32 bit versions even though the laptop is a 64 bit. I was trying to create a generic boot USB that would work on everything I might try it on. What is the consensus on this idea? Any solution to the above error? Thanks from a noobe.

• Setting up SANED with sane-test

  I'm trying to setup a network service for running saned (running the sane-test backend) on Ubuntu 12.10, running it on a virtualbox. I followed the directions found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ScanningHowTo and i got to the point where if i use a front-end like xsane, or use the command scanimage -d test i get the desired behaviour. (i get the test image). But when i try to use the network demon to access the backend (from the localhost) i get Failed to connect. I used telnet on 127.0.0.1 6566 and i got the following error: saned: symbol lookup error: saned: undefined symbol: sanei_w_init I'm a linux newbie, so i could be making some stupid mistake. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks [update]After posting this question i logged out, logged back in and it worked. After a few days i tried again and it gave the same error as before. Any help?

• Problem with the installation of VirtualBox

  I am trying to install virtualbox and make it work but it doesn't seem I can. In the image you can seem the output. If I run VBoxManage --version I get: WARNING: The character device /dev/vboxdrv does not exist. Please install the virtualbox-dkms package and the appropriate headers, most likely linux-headers-generic. You will not be able to start VMs until this problem is fixed. 4.3.10_Ubuntur93012 But virtualbox-dkms is already installed and at the latest version. So I tried to reinstall it and i got this: Any help will be appreciated. EDIT: The output after reconfigure (@M.Tarun suggestion): EDIT 2: Also installed the sources as @Hmayag instructed, purged virtualbox and installed it again but I got the same problem.

• Does Google include the time to load images, for a single page, as part of the page speed?

  we all know that Google's affects your page rank with the load time of a page. How? That's part of the secret sauce. But we know that page speed is a serious factor. So - what is considered the speed of a page? Is it just the first (and main) html file which the GET receives? Or does it also include loading of images as part of that speed. so for example... GET /index.htm <- takes 0.45 seconds to retrieve (including DNS lookup before). robot parses page.. see's there's a single main image.... GET /img/main.png <- takes 5 seconds to download. is the page speed for that resource, 0.45 seconds OR 5.45 seconds? I understand Javascript is not fired .. but are any of these external resources all downloaded and part of the page speed?

• Flash intro or embedded video?

  So a client of mine wants his homepage to start off something like this: http://www.roche-bobois.com/#/en-CA/home (It's basically a Flash intro that starts with a vector drawing of a furniture showroom that eventually transitions into the image of the actual showroom). Given that some of his users will be using an iPad to view his site, what are some of the alternatives that other developers here use? I'm thinking: Option 1: With PHP, detect if the user is using an iPad/iPhone by checking their user agent string. If they are using a mobile device, then forward to m.abccompany.com (mobile version of the site). Option 2: Convert the Flash video to MP4 or AVI and then embed that, which would allow all users to view his site. Any suggestions if either of these approaches are a good idea?

• Anti-aliasing works for debug runtime but not retail runtime

  I'm experimenting with setting various graphical settings in my Direct3D9 application, and I'm currently facing a curious problem with anti-aliasing. When running under the debug runtime, AA works as expected, and I don't have any errors or warnings. But when running under the retail runtime, the image isn't anti-aliased at all. I don't get any errors, the device creates and executes just fine. As I honestly have little idea where the problem is, I will simply give a relatively high-level overview of the architecture involved, rather than specific problematic code. Simply put, I render my 3D content to a texture, which I then render to the back buffer. Any suggestions as to where to look?

• Legal Precautions of Customizing Ubuntu LiveCD

  Hello everyone, the organization I work at wants to create a custom Ubuntu LiveCD, the customizations are: Pre-installed programs, plugins, some device drivers, and aesthetics such as icons and backgrounds, as well as changing Firefox's homepage and removing unneeded packages. Not big changes, obviously, and we wish to distribute this custom image for clients to use as a bootable CD or USB stick in order to have a quick environment where all our tools are available instantly. What are the licensing and legal consequences of this? What if some of the programs or plugins that are to be pre-packaged are not GPL'd? • How can I generate a 2d navigation mesh in a dynamic environment at runtime?

  So I've grasped how to use A* for path-finding, and I am able to use it on a grid. However, my game world is huge and I have many enemies moving toward the player, which is a moving target, so a grid system is too slow for path-finding. I need to simplify my node graph by using a navigational mesh. I grasp the concept of "how" a mesh works (finding a path through nodes on the vertices and/or the centers of the edges of polygons). My game uses dynamic obstacles that are procedurally generated at run-time. I can't quite wrap my head around how to take a plane that has multiple obstacles in it and programatically divide the walkable area up into polygons for the navigation mesh, like the following image. Where do I start? How do I know when a segment of walk-able area is already defined, or worse, when I realize I need to subdivide a previously defined walk-able area as the algorithm "walks" through the map? I'm using javascript in nodejs, if it matters.

I already have the boot order set up properly and the USB drive already has the ISO image downloaded onto it. I am ready for install but just do not know how to partition. • How to achieve a Gaussian Blur effect for shadows in LWJGL/Slick2D?

  I am currently trying to implement shadows into my game, and after a lot of searching in the interwebs I came to the conclusion that drawing hard edged shadows to a low resolution pass combined with a Gaussian blur effect would fit best and make a good compromise between performance and looks - even though theyre not 100% physically accurate. Now my problem is, that I dont really know how to implement the Gaussian blur part. Its not difficult to draw shadows to a low resolutions buffer image and then stretch it which makes it more smooth, but I need to add the Gaussian blur effect. I have searched a lot on that and found some approachs for GLSL, some even here, but none of them really helped it. My game is written in Java using Slick2D/LWJGL and I would appreciate any help or approaches for an algorithm or maybe even an existing library to achieve that effect. • What technologies are used for Game development now days?

  Whenever I ask a question about game development in an online forum I always get suggestions like learning line drawing algorithms, bit level image manipulation and video decompression etc. However looking at games like God of War 3, I find it hard to believe that these games could be developed using such low level techniques. The sheer awesomeness of such games defy any comprehensible(for me) programming methodology. Besides the gaming hardware is really a monster now days. So it stands to reason that the developers would work at a higher level of abstraction. What is the latest development methodology in the gaming industry? How is it that a team of 30-35 developers (of which most is management and marketing fluff) able to make such mind boggling games? If the question seems too general could you explain the architecture of God of War 3? Or how you would go about producing a clone? That I think should be objectively answerable.
