  Hi everybody. I used JAXB to create some classes from an XSD. The result was not quite what I expected and most probably it can be customized. It created a generic list instead of 3 different lists.   My custom controls are not loading in VS.NET's designer because of a null reference exception. It's got everything to do with the way I am retrieving the baseUri of the application when it runs in the browser: _uriPrefix = Application.Current.Host.Source.AbsoluteUri.Substring(0, Application.Current.Host.Source.AbsoluteUri.IndexOf("/ClientBin")).Trim(); According to the exception details and the help file I'm directed to (here) I'm not correctly designing my app for a runtime that's not the browser (i.e. the new WPF editor in VS.NET or Expression Blend). So, the question is how do retrieve the baseUri (the http://localhost:#### part of my application) if I can't use Application.Host which apparently is null during design time? is there a safe way to do this so I can load my custom controls in a designer?

  Is there an easy way in windows to set a given string, like "sidb" to run a program or open a given folder in Windows? My original idea was to be able to run commands like that in the "Execute" start button menu (or Win + R),so I'd just have to do WIN+R and type "sidb". What is the best way to accomplish this? EDIT: May I rephrase this as : Is there a way to define for example, in systems variables, sibd="C:.......blabla\ and then I'd just have to type "sibd" in Run?

• Strict pointer aliasing: any solution for a specific problem?

  I have a problem caused by breaking strict pointer aliasing rule. I have a type T that comes from a template and some integral type Int of the same size (as with sizeof). My code essentially does the following: T x = some_other_t; if (*reinterpret_cast <Int*> (&x) == 0) ... Because T is some arbitary (other than the size restriction) type that could have a constructor, I cannot make a union of T and Int. (This is allowed only in C++0x only and isn't even supported by GCC yet). Is there any way I could rewrite the above pseudocode to preserve functionality and avoid breaking strict aliasing rule? Note that this is a template, I cannot control T or value of some_other_t; the assignment and subsequent comparison do happen inside the templated code. (For the record, the above code started breaking on GCC 4.5 if T contains any bit fields.)

  What's the simplest API to use in scala to perform the following XPath queries on a document? //s:Annotation[@type='attitude']/s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='type' and not(text())] //s:Annotation[s:Content/s:Parameter[@role='id' and not(text())]]/@type The only documentation I can find on Scala's XML libraries has no information on performing complicated real XPath queries. I used to like JDOM for this purpose (in Java), but since JDOM doesn't support generics, it will be painful to work with in Scala. (Other XML libraries for Java have tended to be even more painful in Java, but I admit I don't know the landscape real well.)

  I'm making a webpage using CherryPy for the server-side, HTML, CSS and jQuery on the client-side. I'm also using a mySQL database. I have a working form for users to sign up to the site - create a username and password. I use jQuery to send an AJAX POST request to the CherryPy which queries the database to see if that username exists. If the username exists, alert the user, if it doesn't, add it to the database and alert success. $.post('submit', postdata, function(data) { alert(data); }); Successful jQuery POST. I want to change the form so that instead of checking that the username exists on submit, a GET request is made as on the blur event from the username input. The bulletin board will be used to allow inter-office communication within the organisation. I am building the application and have been having trouble extracting the results that I need from my database because I don't think it is properly normalized and because of limitations in my knowledge of relational database theory and mysql. I would appreciate input into the design of the board in general and in particular, ways that the database structure can be improved to facilitate efficient queries and help me develop this application and future application faster Business Logic The bulletin board will be used in the following way Posting bulletins and responses to bulletins Employees or 'users' in offices around the country will be able to post messages to the bulletin board.Bulletins must be posted to a location and categorised- i'll call these "bulletins". Users will be able to post any number of replies to any one bulletin and users will be able to reply to their own bulletin - i'll call these 'replies'. Rating bulletins and replies Users will be able to either 'like' or 'dislike' a bulletin or a reply and the total number of likes or dislikes will be shown for each bulletin or reply. Viewing the bulletin board and responses Bulletins can be displayed chronologically. You also shared with me the django comment app, which am aware of but the client am working with requires a lot of complex work to be done in the comment app thats why am working on a new one.

Use 'ignore' to discard the result of the expression, or 'let' to bind the result to a name. So what is the best way to iterate over a DataReader and create a list?

I declared the column while creating the table as [pollDate date] What I wanted is that this column be set automatically, when the user doesnt enter any value for this column. How do i declare the column to achieve this? Assuming that I have the same declaration as above, how do I enter an empty value. I mean if the column was of type varchar, I would enter empty value as " ". But since it is of type date, I get error when I enter the value as " ". How do I enter empty value for the pollDate column?

• SQL CLR and nullable datetime parameter

  I'm trying to write a SQLCLR function that takes a DateTime2 as input and returns another DateTime2. Based on this post I altered the parameter to be the C# type DateTime giving me the level of precision I require. • Scroll Gestures not Passed to IScrollInfo implementing panel in Windows Phone 7 CTP

  I am using a custom panel as a ItemsPanel for a ItemsControl in a with a custom template that provides for a scroll viewer. (See Xaml below.) So long as my panel does not implement IScrollInfo, scrolling works in this scenerio. I implement IScrollInfo and update my viewport and extent sizes in measure override. The scroll bar shows the correct relative size, and if I call the IScrollInfo methods directly, scrolling works as expected. However, the drag and flick gestures no longer scroll the content. Putting a breakpoint on the input of every IScrollInfo method shows that drag and pick are not calling the interface. Removing the IScrollInfo interface declaration restores the scroll on drag and flick behavior. Is there a simple way to restore the flick and pan gestures to ItemControls with panels that implement IScrollInfo?

• How to perform Rails model validation checks within model but outside of filters using ledermann-rails-settings and extensions

  Background I'm using ledermann-rails-settings (https://github.com/ledermann/rails-settings) on a Rails 2/3 project to extend virtually the model with certain attributes that don't necessarily need to be placed into the DB in a wide table and it's working out swimmingly for our needs. An additional reason I chose this Gem is because of the post How to create a form for the rails-settings plugin which ties ledermann-rails-settings more closely to the model for the purpose of clean form_for usage for administrator GUI support. It's a perfect solution for addressing form_for support although... Something that I'm running into now though is properly validating the dynamic getters/setters before being passed to the ledermann-rails-settings module. At the moment they are saved immediately, regardless if the model validation has actually fired - I can see through script/console that validation errors are being raised. Example For instance I would like to validate that the attribute :foo is within the range of 0..100 for decimal usage (or even a regex). I've found that with the previous post that I can use standard Rails validators (surprise, surprise) but I want to halt on actually saving any values until those are addressed - ensure that the user of the GUI has given 61.43 as a numerical value.
