• Run a startup script with lightdm

  I have a tablet PC and the graphics driver doesn't support xrandr, so in order to rotate the screen I run a script which changes the Xorg.conf file and then restarts lightdm. I also have a script which uses xsetwacom and xinput to change the rotation of the input devices so that the match the new orientation. I've learned how to get the script to run when I login, but I'd like it to run before I login, so that I don't have to enable auto-login with lightdm. I do need it to run though, or the input (touch and pen) is rotated with respect to the screen, so that when I touch the screen the input is in a completely different area, making it really difficult to use the onscreen keyboard. I've looked at other questions on this site. I've tried putting my script in /etc/Xsession.d but that didn't seem to work. I also tried putting it in /etc/rc.local but I think that is the wrong place, nothing seems to happen. I've also tried googling for lightm script hooks, and various other google terms. Any suggestions? Edit 1: After doing some research, it seems to me that it might not be that I want to run a script with lightdm, but rather with the lighdm greeter (in this case, I think the unity-greeter?). Are there any script-hooks for the unity-greeter?

• Adopting Technologies for the Sake of Technologies

  Unlike other engineering industries, the software engineering industry is really lacking maturity. The lack of maturity can see in different aspects of entire software development life cycle. I think other engineering industries are well organised and structured with common, proven engineering practices. The software engineering industry is greatly a diverse industry with different operating systems, and variety of development platforms, programming languages, frameworks and tools. Now these days, people are going behind the hypes and intellectual thoughts without understanding their core business problems and adopting technologies and practices for the sake of technologies and practices and simply becoming a “poster child” of technologies and practices. Understanding the core business problem and providing best, solid solution with a platform neutral approach, will give you more business values and ROI, instead of blindly adopting technologies and tailor-made your applications for the sake of technologies and practices. People have been simply migrating their solutions in favour of new technologies and different versions of frameworks without any business need. The “Pepsi Challenge” in the Software Development  Pepsi Challenge marketing campaign of the 1980s was a popular and very interesting marketing promotion in which people taste one cup of Pepsi and another cup with Coca Cola. In the taste test, more than 50% of people were preferred Pepsi  over Coca Cola. The success story behind the Pepsi was more sweetness contains in the Pepsi cola. They have simply added more sugar and more people preferred more sweet flavour. You can’t simply identify the better one after sipping one cup of cola based on the sweetness which contains. These things have been happening in the software industry for choosing development frameworks and technologies. People have been simply choosing frameworks based on the initial sugary feeling without understanding its core strengths and weakness. The sugary framework might be more harmful when you develop real-world systems. There is not any silver bullet for solving all kind of problems and frameworks and tools do have strengths and weakness. So it would be better to understand their strength and weakness. And please keep in mind that you have to develop real apps to understand the real capabilities and weakness of a framework. Evaluating a technology based on few blog posts will harm your projects and these bloggers might be lacking real-world experience with the framework. The Problem with Align a Development Practice with Tools Recently I have observed a discussion in a group where one guy asked suggestions for practicing Continuous Delivery (CD) as part of the agile based application engineering. Then the discussion quickly went to using and choosing a Continuous Integration (CI) tool and different people suggested different Continuous Integration (CI) tools for simply practicing Continuous Delivery. If you have worked with core agile engineering practices, you could clearly know that the real essence of agile is neither choosing a tool nor choosing a process. By simply choosing CI tool from a particular vendor will not ensure that you are delivering an evolving software based on customer feedback. You have to understand the real essence of a engineering practice and choose a right tool for practicing it instead of simply focus on a particular tool for a practicing an development practice. If you want to adopt a practice, you need a solid understanding on it with its real essence where tools are just helping us for better automation. Adopting New Technologies for the Sake of Technologies The another problem is that developers have been a tendency to adopt new technologies and simply migrating their existing apps to new technologies. It is okay if your existing system is having problem  with a technology stack or or maintainability challenge with existing solution, and moving to new technology for solving the current problems. We have been adopting new technologies for solving new challenges like solving the scalability challenges when the application or user bases is growing unpredictably. Please keep in mind that all new technologies will become old after working with it for few years. The below Facebook status update of Janakiraman, expresses the attitude of a typical customer. For an example, Node.js is becoming a hottest buzzword in the software industry and many developers are trying to adopt Node.js for their apps. The important thing is that Node.js is a minimalist framework that does some great things for some problems, but it’s not a silver bullet. I have been also working with Node.js which is good for some problems, but really bad for choosing it for all kind of problems. By adopting new technologies for new projects is good if we could get real business values from it because newer framework would solve some existing well known problems and provide better solutions where it can incorporate good solutions for the latest challenges . But adopting a new technology for the sake of new technology is really bad idea. Another example is JavaScript is getting lot of attention so that lot of developers are developing heavy JavaScript centric web apps. First, they will adopt a client-side JavaScript MV* framework from AngularJS, Ember, Backbone etc, and develop a Single Page App(SPA) where they are repeating the mistakes we did in the past with server-side. The mistakes we did in the server-side is transforming to client-side. The problem is that people are just adopting new technologies, but not improving their solutions. I predict that many Single Page App will suck in the future. We need a hybrid approach where we should be able to leverage both server-side and client-side for developing next-generation web apps. The another problem is that if you like a particular framework, use it for all kind of apps. In the past, I know some Silverlight passionate guys were tried to use that framework for all kind of apps including larger line of business apps. And these days developers are migrating their existing Silverlight apps in favour of HTML5 buzzword. So the real question is, what is the business values we are getting from these apps when we are developing it for the sake of a particular technology instead of business need. The another problem is that our solutions consultants are trying to provide unnecessary solutions for the sake of a particular technology or for a hype. For an example, Big Data solutions are great for solving the problem of three Vs : volume, velocity and variety. But trying to put this for every application will make problems. Let’s say, there is a small web site running with limited budget and saying that we need a recommendation engine for the web site with a Hadoop based solution with a 16 node cluster, would be really horrible. If we really need a Hadoop based solution, got for it, but trying to put this for all application would be a big disaster. It would be great if could understand the core business problems first, and later choose a right framework for providing solutions for the actual business problem, instead of trying to provide so many solutions. The Problem with Tied Up to a Platform Vendor Some organizations and teams are tied up with a particular platform vendor where they don’t want to use any product other than their preferred or existing platform vendor. They will accept any product provided by the vendor regardless of its capability. This will lets you some benefits regards with integration and collaboration of different products provided by the same vendor, but it will loose your opportunity to provide better solution for your business problems. For a real world sample scenario, lot of companies have been using SAP for their ERP solutions. When they are thinking about mobility or thinking about developing hybrid mobile apps, they can easily find out a framework from SAP. SAP provides a framework for HTML 5 based UI development named SAPUI5. If you are simply adopting that framework only based for the preference of existing platform vendor, you might be loose different opportunities for providing better solution. Initially you might enjoy the sugary feeling provided by the platform vendor, but you have to think about developing apps which should be capable for solving future challenges. I am not saying that any framework is not good and I believe that all frameworks are good over another one for solving at least one problem. My point is that we should not tied up with any specific platform vendor unless your organization is having resource availability problems. Being Polyglot for Providing Right Solutions The modern software engineering industry is greatly diverse with different tools and platforms. Lot of open source frameworks and new programming languages have been releasing to the developer community, where choosing the right platform without any biased opinion, is really a difficult task. But it would really great if we could develop an attitude with platform neutral mindset and being a polyglot developer for providing better solutions based on the actual business problems. IMHO, we should learn a new programming language and a new framework every year. This will improve the quality of our developer capabilities and also improve the quality of our primary programming language skills. Being polyglot for individual developers and organizational teams will give you greater opportunity to your developer experience and also for your applications. Organizations can analyse their business problem without tied with any technology and later they can provide solutions by choosing different platform and tools. Summary    In this blog post, what I was trying to say that we should not tied up or biased with any development platform, technology, vendor or programming language and we should not adopt technologies and practices for the sake of technologies. If we are adopting a technology or a practice for the sake of it, we are simply becoming a “poster child” of the technology and practice. We should not become a poster child of other people’s intellectual thoughts and theories, instead of it we should become solutions developers and solutions consultants where we should be able to provide better solutions for the business problems. Being a polyglot developer is a good idea for improving your developer skills which lets you provide better solutions for the business problems. The most important thing is that we should become platform neutral developers where our passion should be for providing brilliant solutions. • POST attack on my website

  Hi, I have a site (humanisms.co.uk) which incorporates a voting system, ie. user clicks "Up" and it sends a parameter to a PHP script via AJAX, the PHP inserts vote into MYSQL db and the new "Up" vote is sent back to the page to update the vote count. This is working great but i've noticed that the number of votes for one of my questions shot up last night. I viewed my webhosts access logs and saw this line: 108.27.195.232 - - [03/Mar/2011:15:20:18 +0000] "POST /vote.php HTTP/1.1" 200 2 "http://www.humanisms.co.uk/" "Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; U; Intel Mac OS X 10_6_6; en-US) AppleWebKit/534.16 (KHTML, like Gecko) Chrome/10.0.648.114 Safari/534.16" This is repeated well over 100 times and sometimes more than once a second. Now i know they probably arent sitting there clicking Vote but running some sort of PHP loop? I'm not worried about SQL injection but what can i do to prevent this same IP address from doing this or what can i do in general to avoid this scenario. I should also say that there's no login so anyone can click using the voting system. Thanks

• Coloring The Z Shell[closed]

  Because I have to stare at my command prompt all the time on my computer, it should look at least half-decent, so I am trying to get it colored. The expected outcome is as seen on this site. I have the colors I want set in my .Xdefaults file, but they of course do not color my prompt. My .zshrc is Phil's Prompt. • Premature end of script headers

  I often get a "premature end of script headers" error in my apache log which results to an internal 500 error. I understand what the error message means - that my application did not give the browser the headers it needs (and maybe nothing at all), but the odd thing is that this does not happen all the time. It actually usually happens the first few times I go to my website after a deploy. Could this be a memory issue? Does anyone know how to trouble shoot this? My apache log isn't really telling me anything. I am running a ruby site using the rails framework on ubuntu hardy. thank you!

  I'm trying to follow all the guidelines of "Google Page Speed??". The directive "Minimize request overhead" requires static content (images, js, css, etc.) on a static server (ie cookieless): https://developers.google.com/speed/docs/best-practices/request I do not want to buy a new server and I was thinking of just setting a directory of my site without cookie with htaccess www.mysite.com/static/.htaccess Header unset Cookie Header unset Set-Cookie I do not know if it can be problematic. Looking on google it seems that no one ever has adopted this type of solution, so I think that it is incorrect. • Basic Exchange Deployment Question

  I have come into a situation where I need to deploy a new Exchange server at a small company. I haven't dealt with the newest version of Exchange (2010) yet, but am familiar with 2003 and 2007. The site is currently running one Exchange 2003 server, which hosts about 100 mailboxes. We have new hardware for an additional server, and this is where I need some advice. Should I install Exchange 2010 on the new hardware and leave the older server as-is? Do I upgrade the old server and use it as a bridgehead or replication partner (there is nothing wrong with it other than it is a few years old and running Win2003/Exchange2003)? Can I leave the older 2003 server alone with only the POP mailboxes on it, and will it peacefully co-exist with the new server? Any advice is very appreciated!

  If you experience sequence of errors below with BizTalk HL7 MLLP receive ports you may need to request a hotfix from Microsoft. Knowledge base article number is 2454887 but it’s still not available on the KB site. The hotfix is recently released and you may need to open support ticket to get to it. It requires three other hotfixes installed: ·         970492 (DASM 3.7.502.2) ·         973909 (additional ACK codes) ·         981442 (Microsoft.solutions.btahl7.mllp.dll 3.7.509.2) If the exceptions below repeatedly appear in the event log you most likely would be helped by the hotfix: Fatal error encountered in 2XDasm. Exception information is Cannot access a disposed object. Object name: 'CEventingReadStream'. There was a failure executing the receive pipeline: "BTAHL72XPipelines.BTAHL72XReceivePipeline, BTAHL72XPipelines, Version=1.3.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=31bf3856ad364e35" Source: "BTAHL7 2.X Disassembler" Receive Port: "ReceivePortName" URI: "IPAddress:portNumber" Reason: Cannot access a disposed object. • Backup to disk, encrypted, without any installed local software

  Hi, Ok, this is a tough one, and it might not even be possible, but no harm in asking I guess. I have a Buffalo Terastation file server that I use for network attached storage. After a couple of phone calls to customer services I realised that there is no way to backup to disk encrypted. In effect, I would be carrying unencrypted company data off-site daily, which is obviously unacceptable. I had a go at TrueCrypt, EncFS, and a few others, and as far as I could see all of them required that you install some software on the machine that is to use the file system, which makes sense. Unfortunately the firmware on the Terastation is closed and I cannot install any software (and I can't build from source either, since Buffalo didn't include a compiler). Are there any ways to copy files to disk, where as soon as they are written to the disk they are transparently encrypted, without having to install additional software? I'm not sure it matters too much, but the Terastation firmware is Linux based, although as I mentioned, closed. Many thanks, Andreas

  I would like to create something like identicons but not with images but with a unique word for each IP-Adresses and MAC-Adresses. create an easy to remember alias for a mac address, that is unique and reverse lookupable, for example: IP 123.456.789.132 will result in an alias for that IP, that is connected to an existing word from a wordlist, that is unique. Background of this idea: this way we could identify our Routers in our Opennet in Hamburg easily in a graphical NodeGraph. Is there some site already, where I can convert MAC-Adresses to unique human readeable words?

• httpd.conf for case-insensitive file serving

  I'm a complete newbie with regard to managing Apache, so excuse me if I'm phrasing something incorrectly. I have a web site -- say, http://domain.com. The problem is that when I try to open http://domain.com/index.html in a web browser it displays the page, but when I attempt to access http://domain.com/Index.html (note capital I), it responds with HTTP 404. How do I configure Apache to serve both these files (and directories, for that matter) in a case-insensitive manner? Current httpd.conf is here. EDIT Dan C, thanks for a hint. I basically want to allow users to download files from my server and don't really want them to be aware that Index.html and index.html are in fact different. I'm also very willing to know as to what are the ramifications of this decision.

• Why does my browser take me to Scour.com? (redirect virus)

  The "scour" or Rootkit.Win32.TDSS virus has a long history which can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scour Here is the primary symptom: after searching for something in your web browser using google, one of the results that you click on redirects you to scour.com. If you've executed ClamWin, Malwarebytes, McAfee, Norton, etc. to find and isolate the virus without any luck--this isn't really a surprise, since this virus attaches to existing system drivers. I only know of one reliable package that will remove this without ill effects--like adding new spyware. This package is called TDSSKiller. I have seen multiple websites that claim to have this software available, but the one that I know is reliable is located here: http://support.kaspersky.com/viruses/solutions?qid=208280684 Once you go to Kaspersky's tech support site, the TDSSKiller zip file is available for downloading. When you execute this software, you will be able to "cure" or repair the infected driver. Remember to jot down the name of the driver for future reference--should you need to reinstall the driver from a "same-as" working computer, or your install disk if the repair is ineffective. The driver that happened to get infected on my computer was the tcpip.sys driver. This caused my win sockets to loose their ip addresses. In most other instances, less critical drivers such as HDAudBus.sys are infected. In my case, I was not through correcting my computer problems until I corrected the broken WinSock issue and loaded an earlier version of the tcpip.sys driver from: C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\i386 which I placed in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers Don't forget to reboot your computer after your repair! Once you download TDSSKiller and cure/repair your infected driver(s), the redirect on google searches should disappear .

• Can i upgrade Photoshop CS6 to Adobe Creative Suite 6 at a discounted price?

  I've had a look around on the official Adobe Shop website, but I couldn't find a clear answer for this.. I am a freelance developer and I have recently purchased Adobe Photoshop CS6 through the Adobe.com (small/medium business site, volume licensing). However, after downloading and installing it a couple of days ago, I realised that I may require the complete 'Adobe Creative Suite 6' instead. Does anyone out there know if this it is possible to upgrade your purchase, and not just the specific product you've bought previously? I guess I'm looking for something along the lines of 'Complete My Album', but for Adobe software, so that I don't end up with two copies of Photoshop. Thanks :)

• Why isn't sox able to convert to mp3?

  I installed Sox, i installed lame-398, but sox is not able to convert any file to mp3. It fails with the messages: ./../sox FAIL util: Unable to load LAME encoder library (libmp3lame). ./../sox FAIL formats: can't open output file `funktech.mp3': How can i check if lame has been installed correct? How can i get sox to find the mp3Library? edit: I did not install sox at all, it works without installing directly from the commandline. Lame was installed by following the instructions on their site: ./configure make make install which results in the following files being found in /usr/local/lib/ : libmp3lame.dylib, libmp3lame.la, libmp3lame.a Maybe symlinking libmp3lame.la, which is marked as executable, to /usr/bin would help?

• Audit Windows Server/Desktop Product Key usage

  The company I work for has a fairly big domain of Windows Desktops and Servers. We also have standalone servers that are remote to our site but we have direct access to. We need to audit our license usage across all Windows machines (including some VMs). I have tried a few products downloaded, but the key returned is not the one used during installation. I have one product that gives the last 5 characters correctly but needs to be installed so its not really suitable. I also have tried some PowerShell scripts one of which is here Ideally I am looking for one that can be used over a network and if possible can audit Office keys too. I've just tried Jelly Bean and some other product key tools that all return BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBBB-BBBB-BBBBB as the product key.

• Spring Roo Database Reverse Engineer with Oracle

  So you are trying to reverse engineer an Oracle database with roo? Unfortunately, due to licensing restrictions with the Oracle JDBC Drivers, this is a little difficult. There are a few blog posts and forum threads that address the problem but I figured I would post what worked for me here. First, you need to download the appropriate Oracle Drivers from Oracle. The required login, stringent password requirements, nosy registration form, and general system instability made this a pretty painful step for me. I’d also like to say that companies that have password requirements that don’t allow symbols (or any other non-standard requirement) have a special place in my heart. Having to recover my password every time I go to your site virtually guarantees I will only go there when I absolutely have to (not often). Anyways, once you have it downloaded you need to install is with maven: mvn install:install-file -Dfile=~/Downloads/ojdbc6.jar -DgroupId=com.oracle -DartifactId=ojdbc6 -Dversion=11.2.0.3 -Dpackaging=jar -DgeneratePom=true Here comes the fun part. You need to create an osgi wrapper for the driver to install it in roo. Otherwise, roo cannot see the driver. Create a new folder and put the contents of the oracle roo addon pom gist I created. Now build it with maven. • How to dump remote database without mysqldump?

  I want to dump the database on my remotely hosted site in regular intervals using a shell script. Unfortunately the server is locked down pretty tight, has no mysqldump installed, binary files can't be executed by normal users/in home directories (so I can't "install" it myself) and the database lives on a separate server, so I can't grab the files directly. The only thing I can do is log into the webserver via SSH and establish a connection to the database server using the mysql command line client. How can I dump the contents to a file a la mysqldump in SQL format? Bonus: If possible, how can I dump the contents directly to my end of the SSH connection?

• NFS or GFS for LVS 10 Server Setup

  Currently we have a 10 servers LVS hosting setup. The people we hired to set it up did not anything about GFS which was our preferred Central Storage File System Solution. As we have tight time constraint, we just told them to use whatever they were familiar with which is NFS. I have since done some research and it seems that NFS is not ideal for the type of high traffic site we are hoping to build. I couldn't find much info online about the signaficance differences between the 2. As we to setup all servers again right now, should we stick with NFS or find someone who knows how to setup GFS amd go with that. We need a setup that is highly reliable and scalable as we intend. As after initial setup is done, we expect high increases in traffic and load.

• How would I implement this application idea?

  I am a D&D gamer and a developer that has mostly worked with ASP.NET applications professionally. I have written some chat bots in Node.js and I have only played a little with PHP but wrote nothing serious. I have had inspiration to create a site that allows a person to keep track of characters (aka the character sheet). I am thinking of using this as a learning opportunity to learn noSQL and to write a full javascript front-end. I want this application to save the value as I change it. So if I edit the armor class, it is saved immediately instead of waiting until I hit the submit button. I think that will make it easier to use while gaming and not losing anything because I forgot to save the change. I have never done anything like this. How do you implement this style of application? Is there a tutorial or howto to get me on the right path? While I would really like to use ASP.NET but I don't have a Windows server to publish on (and I really can't afford to pay for a service). What language that runs on Linux would work well for this type of application? Note: I feel noSQL would work in this case because of the sheer number of tables required to create something like this in SQL.

• How to find the Fastest DNS servers to host our domain?

  The question was born because lately we've seen a pretty odd (well, at least for us, for the first time) - error message in Google webmaster tools - "DNS lookup timeout" ... I was pretty sure that with eNom's 5 DNS servers (dns1... to dns5.name-services.com) we're pretty set... But it appears that from (Europe/Hungary), for example - dns1.name-services.com takes 170ms. to respond on a ping... while GoDaddy's ns75.domaincontrol.com - takes only 40 ms. to respond... and at the same time - dns2 to dns5.name-services.com - each result with a timeout error (on ping)... This issue came to our attention right in the final stages of optimizing our web-site (almost to death) - basically, just in time... I would love to move our domains to a fast (fastest?) and reliable DNS server.. - but how do I find one ? Also - I did the ping tests from various geographic locations (we have servers in many countries) and GoDaddy seemed to be faster than eNom almost in every case. I'd be very thankful for any hints on this! Edited: Well.. maybe this one does not have an answer, after all...
