• How to delete a residual Ubuntu directory from Windows?

  I'm using Windows 7. After installing (and uninstalling) Ubuntu on my laptop, I found that it left a folder called ".Trash-1000" on my H drive. I cannot remove it: if I try to delete it from Explorer, it says: The file name you specified is not valid or too long. Specify a different file name. The files mentioned there are the contents of that folder. Using quotes around the folder name yields the same result. Trying to delete any of the sub-folders results in the same error, and trying to remove any of the files inside results in "No such file or directory". As I said before, I no longer have Ubuntu installed. How can I remove this folder?

• Why are Full GCs not running on my gcInterval I set?

  ColdFusion 10 Update 10 Windows Server 2008 R2 Java 1.7.0_21 I am trying to figure Full GCs to run every 10 minutes. I have used the gcInterval JVM arg in the past on earlier versions of ColdFusion with success, but I have confirmed with verbose GC logs that Full GCs are still happening on the hour (Unless the Old Gen gets so full that it forces a full collection). • Mysql InnoDB and quickly applying large updates

  Basically my problem is that I have a large table of about 17,000,000 products that I need to apply a bunch of updates to really quickly. The table has 30 columns with the id set as int(10) AUTO_INCREMENT. I have another table which all of the updates for this table are stored in, these updates have to be pre-calculated as they take a couple of days to calculate. This table is in the format of [ product_id int(10), update_value int(10) ]. The strategy I'm taking to issue these 17 million updates quickly is to load all of these updates into memory in a ruby script and group them in a hash of arrays so that each update_value is a key and each array is a list of sorted product_id's. { 150: => [1,2,3,4,5,6], 160: => [7,8,9,10] } Updates are then issued in the format of UPDATE product SET update_value = 150 WHERE product_id IN (1,2,3,4,5,6); UPDATE product SET update_value = 160 WHERE product_id IN (7,8,9,10); I'm pretty sure I'm doing this correctly in the sense that issuing the updates on sorted batches of product_id's should be the optimal way to do it with mysql / innodb. I'm hitting a weird issue though where when I was testing with updating ~13 million records, this only took around 45 minutes. Now I'm testing with more data, ~17 million records and the updates are taking closer to 120 minutes. I would have expected some sort of speed decrease here but not to the degree that I'm seeing. Any advice on how I can speed this up or what could be slowing me down with this larger record set? As far as server specs go they're pretty good, heaps of memory / cpu, the whole DB should fit into memory with plenty of room to grow.

• Why does my ping command (Windows) results alternate between "timeout" and "network is not reachable"?

  My Windows is in Spanish, so I will have to paste console outputs in that language (I think that translating without knowing the exact terms used in english versions could give worse results than leaving it as it appears on screen). This is the issue: when pinging a non-existent IP from a WinXP-SP3 machine (clean Windows install, just formatted), I get sometimes a "Timeout" result, and sometimes a "network is not reachable" message. I am posing this question mainly for learning purposes, but there is another reason: when all pings are returning "timeout", it creates an %ERRORLEVEL% value of 1, but if there is someone of "Network is not reachable" type, %ERRORLEVEL% goes to 0 (no error), and this could be inappropriate for a shell script (we can not use ping to detect, for example, if the network is down due to loss of contact with the gateway).

• Routing between same network

  Hi In this scenario there is point -to point serial connection between R6 and R7 , there is router R10 whose interface F0/0 is having ip address of 10.1.1.2/24 and there is a host machine (R9) with ip address 10.1.1.1/24 which is running an application, My problem is that Application on R9 will only work when it will get its Gateway as 10.1.1.1/24 which is of router (R10) , is there any way i can make R6 and R7 transparent for R9 and R10, Or any type of routing using GRE / Route-map or any other way. • FFmpeg add multiple audio files to video at specific points

  I have two audio files, each about 3 minutes long. I want to take the first 10 seconds of each file and add them each to a video file at specific points - 0 seconds and 10 seconds. So the resulting video should be 20 seconds long. I've got this far: ffmpeg -i video.mov -ss 0 -t 20 -itsoffset 0 -i audio1.mp3 -itsoffset 10 -i audio2.mp3 -acodec copy -vcodec copy out.mov ...but the resulting video has 20 seconds of the first audio file only, the second audio file doesn't start at 10 seconds like it should. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

• AuthSub token from Google/YouTube API is always returned as invalid

  Anyone out there have experience with the YouTube/Google API? I am trying to login to Google/Youtube using clientLogin, retrieve an AuthSub token, exchange it for a multi-session token and then use it in our upload form. Just a note that we are not going to have other users logging into our (secure) website, this is for our use only (no multi-users). We just want a way to upload videos to our YT account via our own website without having to login/upload to YouTube. Ultimately, everything is dependent on the first step. My AuthSub token is always being returned as invalid (Error '403'). All the steps I used are below with username/password changed. Anyone have an insight on why my AuthSub is always invalid? I am spending an enormous amount of time trying to get this to work. • WPF Combobox binding: can't change selection.

  After wasting hours on this, following on the heels of my Last Problem, I'm starting to feel that Framework 4 is a master of subtle evil, or my PC is haunted. I have three comboboxes and a textbox on a WPF form, and I have an out-of-the-box Subsonic 3 ActiveRecord DAL. When I load this "edit record" form, the comboboxes fill correctly, they select the correct items, and the textbox has the correct text. I can change the TextBox text and save the record just fine, but the comboboxes CANNOT BE CHANGED. The lists drop down and highlight, but when you click on an item, the item selected stays the same. Comparing it with my last problem (link at the top of this message), I seem to have something really wierd with data sources going on. Maybe it's a Subsonic thing?

The rules are simple: Find a number consisting of 9 digits in which each of the digits from 1 to 9 appears only once. This number must also satisfy these divisibility requirements: The number should be divisible by 9. If the rightmost digit is removed, the remaining number should be divisible by 8. If the rightmost digit of the new number is removed, the remaining number should be divisible by 7. And so on, until there's only one digit (which will necessarily be divisible by 1). • Trying to create an image list based on what is defined as the order, and loosing

  I have a custom created module for Joomla 2.5 and within the params of the module, and have a loop that is not outputting as expected. I have the following parameters (fields) int he module: Order Thumb image Image Title Full-size image Now there are 10 sets of these group of 4 params. What I am trying to do is loop through each of the object sets, 10 of them, and on each iteration, build an HTML image list structure. The if statement is building the HTML structure for the sets that have an order value that is greater than 0, and the else is creating the html for those sets that do not have a value greater that 0. The goal is to create two variables and then concatenate the the strings together; the leading set are the sets that have an order defined. This is not happening and every thrid loop seems like it is missing. • C - Error with read() of a file, storage in an array, and printing output properly

  I am new to C, so I am not exactly sure where my error is. However, I do know that the great portion of the issue lies either in how I am storing the doubles in the d_buffer (double) array or the way I am printing it. Specifically, my output keeps printing extremely large numbers (with around 10-12 digits before the decimal point and a trail of zeros after it. Additionally, this is an adaptation of an older program to allow for double inputs, so I only really added the two if statements (in the "read" for loop and the "printf" for loop) and the d_buffer declaration.   I need a solution to store images (1 billion) which users will upload to a website via PHP or Javascript upload (website will have 1 billion page views a month using Linux Debian distros) assuming 20 photos per user maximum (10 thumbnails of size 90px by 90px and 10 large, script resized images of having maximum width 500px or maximum height 500px depending on shape of image, meaning square, rectangle, horizontal, vertical etc). Assume this to be a LEMP-stack (Linux Nginx MySQL PHP) social-media or social-matchmaking type application whose content will be text and images. Since everyone knows storing tons of images (website users uploaded images in this case) are bad inside a single directory or NFS etc, please explain all the details about the architecture and configuration of the entire setup of storage solution, to store 1 billion images on any method you recommend (no third-party cloud storage like S3 etc. It has to be within the private data center using our own hardware and resources.). The solution has to include both the storage solution and organizing the images uploaded by users. How will we organize the users images if a single user will not have more than 20 images (10 thumbs and 10 large of having either width or height 500px)? Please consider that this has to be organized in a structural way so we can fetch a single user's images via PHP/Javascript or API programmatically through some type of user's unique identifier(s).

• First round playing with Memcached

  To be honest I have not been very interested in the caching before I’m going to a project which would be using the multi-site deployment and high connection and concurrency and very sensitive to the user experience. That means we must cache the output data for better performance. After looked for the Internet I finally focused on the Memcached. What’s the Memcached? I think the description on its main site gives us a very good and simple explanation. Free & open source, high-performance, distributed memory object caching system, generic in nature, but intended for use in speeding up dynamic web applications by alleviating database load. Memcached is an in-memory key-value store for small chunks of arbitrary data (strings, objects) from results of database calls, API calls, or page rendering. Memcached is simple yet powerful. Its simple design promotes quick deployment, ease of development, and solves many problems facing large data caches. Its API is available for most popular languages. The original Memcached was built on *nix system are is being widely used in the PHP world. Although it’s not a problem to use the Memcached installed on *nix system there are some windows version available fortunately. Since we are WISC (Windows – IIS – SQL Server – C#, which on the opposite of LAMP) it would be much easier for us to use the Memcached on Windows rather than *nix. I’m using the Memcached Win X64 version provided by NorthScale. There are also the x86 version and other operation system version.   Install Memcached Unpack the Memcached file to a folder on the machine you want it to be installed, we can see that there are only 3 files and the main file should be the “memcached.exe”. Memcached would be run on the server as a service. To install the service just open a command windows and navigate to the folder which contains the “memcached.exe”, let’s say “C:\Memcached\”, and then type “memcached.exe -d install”. If you are using Windows Vista and Windows 7 system please be execute the command through the administrator role. Right-click the command item in the start menu and use “Run as Administrator”, otherwise the Memcached would not be able to be installed successfully. Once installed successful we can type “memcached.exe -d start” to launch the service. Now it’s ready to be used. The default port of Memcached is 11211 but you can change it through the command argument. You can find the help by typing “memcached -h”.   Using Memcached Memcahed has many good and ready-to-use providers for vary program language. After compared and reviewed I chose the Memcached Providers. It’s built based on another 3rd party Memcached client named enyim.com Memcached Client. The Memcached Providers is very simple to set/get the cached objects through the Memcached servers and easy to be configured through the application configuration file (aka web.config and app.config). Let’s create a console application for the demonstration and add the 3 DLL files from the package of the Memcached Providers to the project reference. Then we need to add the configuration for the Memcached server. Create an App.config file and firstly add the section on top of it. The Memcached server information would be defined under the enyim.com section since it will be responsible for connect to the Memcached server. The protocol of the Memcached responsible for routing the cached objects into the proper server. So it’s very easy to scale-out your system by Memcached. And then define the Memcached Providers configuration. The Memcached Providers gives us a static class named DistCache that can be used to operate the Memcached servers. Get<T>: Retrieve the cached object from the Memcached servers. If failed it will return null or the default value. Add: Add an object with a unique key into the Memcached servers. Assuming that we have an operation that retrieve the email from the name which is time consuming. This is the operation that should be cached. The method would be like this. But the next time I entered “ziyanxu” it returned very quickly from the Memcached.   Summary In this post I explained a bit on why we need cache, what’s Memcached and how to use it through the C# application. The example is fairly simple but hopefully demonstrated on how to use it. Memcached is very easy and simple to be used since it gives you the full opportunity to consider what, when and how to cache the objects. And when using Memcached you don’t need to consider the cache servers. The Memcached would be like a huge object pool in front of you. The next step I’m thinking now are: What kind of data should be cached? And how to determined the key? How to implement the cache as a layer on top of the business layer so that the application will not notice that the cache is there. How to implement the cache by AOP so that the business logic no need to consider the cache. • NTFS Corruption: Files created in Linux corrupted when Windows Boots

  I'm getting some file loss and corruption on my Win7/Ubuntu 12.04 dual boot setup. I have a large shared NTFS partition. I have my Windows Docs/Music/etc. directories on that file and have the comparable directors in Linux setup as a sym. link. I'm using ntfs-3g on the linux side of things to manage the ntfs partition. The shared partition is on a logical partition along with my Linux /home / and /swap partitions. The ntfs partition is mounted at boot time via fstab with the following options: ntfs-3g users,nls=utf8,locale=en_US.UTF-8,exec,rw The problem seems to be confined to newly created and recently edited files. I have not see data loss or corruption when creating/editing files in Windows and then moving over to Ubuntu. I've been using the sync command aggressively in Ubuntu to try to ensure everything is getting written to the HDD. I do not use hibernate in Windows so I know it's not the usual missing files due to Hibernation problem. I'm not seeing any mount related issues on dmesg. Most recently I had a set of files related to a LaTeX document go bad. Some of them show up in Ubuntu but I am unable to delete them. In the GUI file browser they are given thumbnails associated with files I created on my last boot of Windows. To be more specific: I created a few png files in Windows. The files corrupted by that Windows boot are associated with running PdfLatex on a file and are not image files. However, two of the corrupted files show up with the thumbnail image of one of the previously mentioned png files. The png files are not in the same directory as the latex files but they are both win the Document Folder tree. I've had sucess with using NTFS for shared data in the past and am hoping there's some quirk here I'm missing and it's not just bad luck. On one hand this appears to be some kind of Windows problem as data loss occurs when I boot to Windows after having worked in Ubuntu for a while. However, I'm assuming it's more on the Ubuntu end as it requires the special NTFS drivers. Edit for more info: This is a Lenovo Thinkpad L430. Purchased new in the last month. So it's a fairly fresh install. Many of the files on the shared partition were copied over from a previous NTFS formatted shared partition on another HDD. As requested: here's a sample chkdsk log. Some of the files its mentioning were files that got deleted off the partition while in Ubuntu. Others were created/edited but not deleted. Checking file system on D: Volume dismounted. • ASP.NET MVC Validation Complete

  OK, so let’s talk about validation. Most people are probably familiar with the out of the box validation attributes that MVC knows about, from the System.ComponentModel.DataAnnotations namespace, such as EnumDataTypeAttribute, RequiredAttribute, StringLengthAttribute, RangeAttribute, RegularExpressionAttribute and CompareAttribute from the System.Web.Mvc namespace. All of these validators inherit from ValidationAttribute and perform server as well as client-side validation. In order to use them, you must include the JavaScript files MicrosoftMvcValidation.js, jquery.validate.js or jquery.validate.unobtrusive.js, depending on whether you want to use Microsoft’s own library or jQuery. No significant difference exists, but jQuery is more extensible. You can also create your own attribute by inheriting from ValidationAttribute, but, if you want to have client-side behavior, you must also implement IClientValidatable (all of the out of the box validation attributes implement it) and supply your own JavaScript validation function that mimics its server-side counterpart. Of course, you must reference the JavaScript file where the declaration function is. Let’s see an example, validating even numbers. As a side note, if you implement a custom validator that also requires a JavaScript function, you’ll probably want them together. One way to achieve this is by including the JavaScript file as an embedded resource on the same assembly where the custom attribute is declared. It allows externalizing your validation logic to another class, so you have to tell which type and method to use. The method can be static as well as instance, if it is instance, the class cannot be abstract and must have a public parameterless constructor. It can be applied to a property as well as a class. It does not, however, support client-side validation. Let’s see an example declaration: 1: [CustomValidation(typeof(ProductValidator), "OnValidateName")] 2: public String Name 3: { 4: get; 5: set; 6: } The validation method needs this signature: 1: public static ValidationResult OnValidateName(String name) 2: { 3: if ((String.IsNullOrWhiteSpace(name) == false) && (name.Length <= 50)) 4: { 5: return (ValidationResult.Success); 6: } 7: else 8: { 9: return (new ValidationResult(String.Format("The name has an invalid value: {0}", name), new String[] { "Name" })); 10: } 11: } Note that it can be either static or instance and it must return a ValidationResult-derived class. ValidationResult.Success is null, so any non-null value is considered a validation error. The single method argument must match the property type to which the attribute is attached to or the class, in case it is applied to a class: 1: [CustomValidation(typeof(ProductValidator), "OnValidateProduct")] 2: public class Product 3: { 4: } The signature must thus be: 1: public static ValidationResult OnValidateProduct(Product product) 2: { 3: } Continuing with attribute-based validation, another possibility is RemoteAttribute. This allows specifying a controller and an action method just for performing the validation of a property or set of properties. This works in a client-side AJAX way and it can be very useful. Let’s see an example, starting with the attribute declaration and proceeding to the action method implementation: 1: [Remote("Validate", "Validation")] 2: public String Username 3: { 4: get; 5: set; 6: } The controller action method must contain an argument that can be bound to the property: 1: public ActionResult Validate(String username) 2: { 3: return (this.Json(true, JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet)); 4: } If in your result JSON object you include a string instead of the true value, it will consider it as an error, and the validation will fail. This string will be displayed as the error message, if you have included it in your view. You can also use the remote validation approach for validating your entire entity, by including all of its properties as included fields in the attribute and having an action method that receives an entity instead of a single property: 1: [Remote("Validate", "Validation", AdditionalFields = "Price")] 2: public String Name 3: { 4: get; 5: set; 6: } 7:  8: public Decimal Price 9: { 10: get; 11: set; 12: } The action method will then be: 1: public ActionResult Validate(Product product) 2: { 3: return (this.Json("Product is not valid", JsonRequestBehavior.AllowGet)); 4: } Only the property to which the attribute is applied and the additional properties referenced by the AdditionalFields will be populated in the entity instance received by the validation method. The same rule previously stated applies, if you return anything other than true, it will be used as the validation error message for the entity. The remote validation is triggered automatically, but you can also call it explicitly. This will only work server-side, that is, the ModelState.IsValid property will be set to false on the controller’s action method if the validation in unsuccessful.
