• On RouterOS, how will transparent proxying (with DNAT) affect reporting of netflows?

  I have a box running Mikrotik RouterOS, which is set up to do transparent web proxying, as described here. In short, this means that I have a firewall rule for destination NAT causing any port 80 traffic to get redirected to port 8080 on the router, which is received by the Mikrotik local web proxy. The local web proxy then makes the web request on the client's behalf, in this case to a parent web proxy server (which in turn does the real web request). My question is, how will this two-part process get reported in the logging of traffic flow information (netflows)? Looking at the logged information, what I seem to be seeing is this: One flow recorded from client machine (private IP) to remote proxy (8080) Another flow recorded from router to remote proxy (8080) The original request that the client made to port 80 isn't recorded. I want to write code to analyse traffic usage, so I want to be sure I'm not losing information if I discard the latter of these.

• Chrome developer tools - network panel gaps

  In the Chrome developer tools, under the network tab, I'm curious to know what is happening during the gaps. If you look at my image below, I have highlighted in orange the areas where these gaps exist. Where I'm able to load a lot of my page from cache it's a shame these large gaps occur as they make up most of my page load time. What exactly is happening in this time? EDIT Okay I found this answer which essentially sums up my question, so a different question: does anyone know a good method to reduce the length of these gaps? Presumably (albeit rather extreme) if I loaded all my CSS on the page there wouldn't be a delay after loading the CSS file before the images were loaded.

• Deleting MySQL rows causes lock table error

  I had a couple million rows to delete but they can't be deleted at once without this error ERROR 1206 (HY000): The total number of locks exceeds the lock table size So I wrote a script to delete 100,000 rows 10,000 at a time. It ran once but when I run it a second time I get the error on the first attempt to delete 10,000. The way I'm trying to delete the 10,000 rows is to use a delete statement that refers to all 2 million rows but I use a limit clause to affect only 10,000. I've tried adding an "unlock tables;" statement to the script before the first delete but that doesn't help. I still get the lock table error on the first delete. Any ideas how I can do this? Is there a way I can tell it NOT to lock records? I can make sure nothing else is accessing the table.

• Browser pollution / Pop Up request

  From time to time, when I browse the internet , after entering a site's URL , I get a warning message that a pop up has been blocked , then a question mark and a set of numbers appends itself after the URL. It doesn't matter what site I want to navigate to, it can be a site I have developed, a well know site like drupal.org for instance. Here's what happens: enter url: example.com warning: pop up blocked url change to: example.com/?1347628900 After checking the pop up ( which of course turns out to be an unwanted ad ), i deducted that the request and the pop up were linked. This has never happened to me before, I'm not sure how this got started, how can I get rid of this? Clearing the cache , cookies etc... doesn't solve the issue. I'm using a Macbook Pro OS10.6.7 , Chrome 13.0.782.24 beta. Thanks in advance for any tips!

• SCCM not processing hardware Inventory

  We have some workstations that will not import hardware inventory into the SCCM 2007 database. What I've done: Client - verified workstation object is discovered in SCCM - installed ccm client on workstation - manually ran hardware inventory action - verifed Inventory report was sent successfully "Successfully sent report Destination:mp:MP_HinvEndpoint, ID ..... - watched file on client enter and exit temp folder on client. - successfully ran MP Spy to verify client communicates with server - uninstalled client, deleted ccm and ccmsetup folders and reinstalled. Server - no entries in MP_Hinv.log file that coorespond with time stamp of workstation - no entries in dataldr.log file that coorespond with time stamp of workstation Where are these files going? All T/S blogs expect entries in these logs. This is driving me crazy.

  I've xen server with 8 domU. Server is Xeon E31270 with 16gb ram. I think it is enough for 8 machines. Sometimes domU's crashes and i can't figure out the reason. But there is no any memory problems reported in munin monitoring: As you see system uses around 0.2G and 1G is available. So my question is: Is it xen specific problem, that real memory usage and memory usage that shows munin are different (I've never seen such problems oh real hardware machines)? Or maybe it is just monitoring problem, that can't catch moment when there is unusual high load and domU go down? And how I can to defeat this problem? it is really annoying to catch messages in e-mail that domU went down. Btw, such situation was when domU had 2G memory.

  Hi! It makes sense, and is in fact suggested on this site, to have a critical file change trigger a service restart with puppet meta-parameters (such as notify or subscribe). For example: ## file definition for printers.conf file { "/etc/cups/printers.conf": [snip], source => "puppet:///module/etc/cups/printers.conf" } ## service definition for sshd service { 'cups': ensure => running, subscribe => File['/etc/cups/printers.conf'] } But in the case of CUPS, this triggers and endless loop of restarts; the logic works like this: Change puppetmaster's version of /etc/cups/printers.conf puppetmaster pushes new version to client, triggering cups restart cupsd restart insists on putting its own time stamp at the top of printers.conf, 'Written by cupsd...' This change will be seen as out of date, so after runinterval, we return to (1). Is there a way to suppress cupsd's need to time stamp the file? Or is there a puppet trick that could help here?   Open Firmware device tree gives no clue what device might decode at physical address 0x80000000 to 0x8008200 on a G4 New World Macintosh. The mmu has three adjacent Virtual=Real translations for that block. They are the only address translations reported between the top or physical dram at 20000000 and the start of the PCI bridges at f0000000. (A possible clue is that frame-buffer-addr is reported as 9c008000 by Open Firmware, and that is not in the reported translation table either). I believe the architecture has been around since about 1999.

• MBP becomes very hot after using Xcode

  Hardware: MBP early 2011 version OS: Mountain lion App: Xcode 4.5.2 Problem: Every time when I start Xcode, 2 or 3 processes called "git" start running. But when I quit Xcode the "git" process won't quit and are still using a lot of CPU. Then the computer becomes quite hot and the battery gets drained very quickly. If I manually kill these processes the problem is gone. I tried to reinstall Xcode several times but the problem comes back every time. It drives me crazy. Any help will be appreciated!

  Users on my server have been receiving spam, consistently, for some time now. I have most of spamassassin's plugins enabled, and I have made sure to enable verbose logging, where I can see that all of the plugins are working. Why is it, then, that my users are able to receive the same exact junk mail several times in a day without the message being flagged in some way? • Ubuntu 12.04 VPS doesn't boot with mysql in nsswitch.conf

  1and1 VPS ("dynamic cloud server") does not boot any more as soon as mysql lookup is enabled in nsswitch.conf - any suggestions appreciated. Minimal setup to reproduce the problem: install Ubuntu 12.04 / LTS minimal server image install mysql-server, libnss-mysql-bg, nscd configure /etc/libnss-mysql.cfg and /etc/libnss-mysql-root.cfg set up appropriate database tables configure nss lookups through mysql in nsswitch.conf passwd: compat mysql group: compat mysql shadow: compat mysql Now, when I try to reboot the server it just hangs. No logs (maybe due to /var not yet being mounted), and I can't see console output (since this is a VPS). Booting into recovery image and removing "mysql" from /etc/nsswitch.conf makes the system bootable again, so this is definitely related to nsswitch/libnss-mysql-bg. There's a thread on gentoo-users which seems to describe a similar problem, unfortunately there's no real solution described, also the thread is rather old (from 2006) so I'm not sure whether this applies to me at all.

• Which Large File System Format to use for USB Flash drive compatible with Ubuntu/Mac/Windows?

  I've had this problem for a long time and can't find a solution. I switch between the 3 OSes all the time and use a 1TB USB Drive to do so. I can't seem to find a format that is compatible across all systems that handles large files (at least 8-9 GB). Does anyone have a solution for this? Recently I've tried exFat but that messes up the filesystem when trying to read on windows after adding files from Ubuntu (using the fuse driver). The OSes currently I'm using are Windows Vista/7, Mac OS X (10.6.5) and Ubuntu 10.10

  I keep getting an IP conflict on my home network and can't figure out why. I'm running a Belkin-N wireless router that has an Ethernet connection to my 360 and a wireless connection running to my laptop. It's WPA2 encryption and I have a nice password on my router consisting of letters , numbers and special characters. But for some reason I keep getting IP conflicts at night time...By the time I look into the problem I don't see anyone else on the network. Is my router giving me false positives?

  Dell support can be fun to deal with right? Ultimately, I have been going back and forth with Dell on an issue and came to reinstalling Windows 7 32-Bit Pro. The problem is that Windows Setup will not let me format. I've read other posts that say Windows 7 must installed on first partition here. But now that confuses me because the computer came shipped with the installation on the third partion as shown in the picture below? Is there a real problem? Or is this a Microsoftism? Should I obliterate the "OEM" partition to make this work? Please note that the format, delete, new, and extend options are grayed out.

• Ad Agency storage/file server +backup needed (NAS or something else?)

  Looking for a "this is all you need" recommendation. We're a small ad agency with both mac & pcs that access and share files from a 3 yr old Windows 2000 box (no server software). We currently have 1TB on the "server" and back it up to 2 different Seagate Free Agent Pro 1TB external drives. But we're low on space and are looking for something that's bigger, that we can still access from Mac & PC, EASY backup system, secure from viruses, firewall enabled. Not sure if a NAS will work or if we should have a real server. We don't really get on that box except to restore files, or run Norton on it. I hope I've provided enough for a general recommendation. • Disappearing Windows Explorer pinned items

  This has happened twice now in three months: After rebooting, ALL the pinned items from my Windows Explorer taskbar jumplist are gone. Also, recent items from Windows Explorer are much fewer, only one or two if I remember correctly. After the first time I re-pinned the items I wanted, but about a month later it happened again. I re-pinned All other pinned items in other jumplists (e.g. Word) are fine and have never disappeared. Googling for the problem showed that ccleaner can affect this, but I personally do NOT use any cleaners or related progs on this machine. I also think that both times it happened it was after a windows update, although I can't recall what kind of update it was. After each time, Little Registry Editor showed invalid references in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RecentDocs , but I had NOT used it prior to the deletions. Any ideas on why this happens and how to prevent it?

I tried (inside a batch file): for /r test %%f in (foo bar.txt) do if exist %%f echo %%f where the command is the simple echo. It does not work because the space is skipped and I get no output.   Hi, jungledisk is owned by rackspace and offers an option to choose Amazon S3 which charges for traffic whereby if data is stored on rackspace, no charges for traffic. For a small company, to just backup files with jungle disk from ubuntu linux OS computers, i wonder what to choose. Commercial psychologically the price on traffic and the Amazon brand make it appear or maybe it is, of better quality than the cheaper Rackspace offer which is when it comes for just backing up ok ? but if its about backing up around 30 GB which updates from time to time, what would you consider a good choice ?

• Connecting PPTP VPN with Ubuntu 9.10

  I have an ubuntu machine that I wish to connect to a VPN and have traffic routed through that. So far I have installed the pptp-linux package and tried my hand at configuring it manually as well as using pptpsetup. I am using Ubuntu 9.10, but regardless of the method I get "Couldn't find MPPE kernel support". Searching a bit for the problem seems to reveal that Ubuntu DOES come with MPPE kernel support (and has done for quite some time). If anyone can figure this out, you'd be a real lifesaver!

  hi, i try to speed up boot time of my linux server box which uses removable HDD rack's the current boot time is around 2 min's but if i connect the hdd's directly to the mainboard its about 2 sec's the problem is that ahci's kernel implementation causes a timeout of around 30 seconds for each disk during boot which originates from the hdd-rack after the timeout the kernel prints that the disk is limited with speed to 1.5gbps and udma/133 is used so the question i have is: how can i set this in grub as a boot option so the kernel doesnt have to wait for a timeout and just hardcoded limits the speed of the disks? i read about a few options like pci=nomsi or such, which dont work thats why im asking for limiting precisely the disks during boot thx

• Sending emails with remote mail server in ASP.NET blocked by Windows firewall?

  I want to migrate a web application from a Windows Server 2003 to a Windows Server 2008 R2. All works fine except sending emails from the application. If I configure the application to use the smtp server on "localhost" it works, but changing it to the "real" host name (e.g. mail.example.org) no mail is sent. The error message says, that the remote server needs a secure connection or smtp authentication. But since it works when using "localhost" instead of the host name I doubt that this is the problem. Also it's unlikely a problem with the mail server, I also tried it with another one. So for me it seems like the firewall is blocking the outgoing connection to the mail server. I tried to open port 25, but it still did not work. Maybe I just did it the wrong way.

  We created a monitoring report for IOPs on performance counters using Disk reads/sec and Disk writes/sec on four servers (physical boxes, no virtualization) that have 4x 15k 146GB SAS drives in RAID10 per server, set to check and record data every 1 second, and logged for 24 hours before stopping reports. These are the results we got: Server1 Maximum disk reads/sec: 4249.437 Maximum disk writes/sec: 4178.946 Server2 Maximum disk reads/sec: 2550.140 Maximum disk writes/sec: 5177.821 Server3 Maximum disk reads/sec: 1903.300 Maximum disk writes/sec: 5299.036 Server4 Maximum disk reads/sec: 8453.572 Maximum disk writes/sec: 11584.653 The average disk reads and writes per second were generally low. I.e. for one particular server it was like average 33 writes/sec, but when monitoring in real-time it would often spike up to several hundreds and also sometimes into the thousands. Could someone explain to me why these numbers are significantly higher than theoretical calculations assuming each drive can do 180 IOPs? Additional details (RAID card): HP Smart Array P410i, Total cache size of 1GB, Write cache is disabled, Array accelerator cache ratio is 25% read and 75% write

• Test site speed

  I am test driving an Akmai CDN architecture and before committing to buy, I would like to gauge the real performance gain from the acceleration feature. What would be the best MO for doing speed tests from different locations around the world? I would like to test the page load speed and not just the server response time. I would like to test speed from as many edge locations as possible. I do not mind a paid service as well, if it is optimal. Thank you!
