• Small standalone SQL database similar to access in the old days(ie file database)

  Hi, I am looking for a easy to use and deploy sql type database i can ship with a desktop application. This will be a small application user's can download from my website. In the vb6 days, access was the common database for small desktop apps, what is my option these days? Looking at SQL CE it seems to have a quite a few limitations such as count(distinct) etc SQL express needs to be installed and running as a service (could i include the SQL express deployments in my deployment so the user doesn't even know its been installed? I assume size would then be an issue) SQL 2005/2008 is not an option due to size and licensing restrictions. I would like to use c#, wpf and entity framework. What would seem to be the best options based on your knowledge and experience? Thanks

• Referencing a control programatically with external source

  Forgive me about the title, I have no idea what this is called. I have a MS Access database set up, with a Period field that has either values 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. I retrieve these values using a database connection and I would like to reference a particular control based on what period was grabbed from the database. Here's example code, pseudo of course. TextBox(dr(3)).Text = dr(0) dr(3) contains the period, and dr(0) contains the content I would like to put into the text box. I have these text boxes on my form: TextBox1, TextBox2, TextBox3, TextBox4 and TextBox5. So if dr(3) contained 2 then I would want to reference TextBox2. I hope I've made myself clear, any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks. :)

  Hi, I'm trying to write a stored proc (SP) in Sybase. The SP takes 5 varchar parameters. Based on the parameters passed, I want to construct the column names to be selected from a particular table. • Consuming an iCal/.ics file in YQL

  How would one consume an iCal/.ics file in YQL? Given an .ics such as: http://www.hebcal.com/export/ba/8a35a5efbb27548bc0272b94b8de96.ics?subscribe=1&v=1&year=2010&month=x&nh=on&tag=fp.ql&c=off How would I go about using YQL to select certain events based on fields, etc. I've tried the standard formats, and the only format that seems to even parse the file is HTML - which puts it all in a <p>, and removes the line returns that give the file meaning. I've had some success with using Yahoo Pipes' Fetch Feed Source, but was wondering if it's possible to do this entirely in YQL. Any ideas?

  I'm developing a CMS (with Django, but that doesn't matter) and have chosen GIT. Installations will vary in: Configs Database contents Media Templates First 3 are not a problem with git: we simply don't need these :) While developing, I have 1 default template with related media. Later, each customer will receive his own design based on default templates (some slight customization). I'm not going to support each of the custom templates as I introduce new features. Modularity helps with this but is not a 100% solution. Do you have any experience to share?

• Using WFC authentication service for web application

  I am using a WFC authentication service I set up with a web application. I have successfully set up and tested the AuthenticationService and RolesService. The web application can successfully call methods like ValidateUser and GetRolesForCurrentUser through the WFC services. I want to integrate the WFC authentication service with my web.config and site.map. Do I need to write a custom provider, or is there some way I can modify the web.config of the web application to use the WFC authentication service as its membership provider? This way I can set what roles have access to what directories based off the WFC authentication service.

• Oracle 11g connection prob.

  Our application is based on Oracle 11g database its drivers already installed but application throws an error on runtime. "AppliMSP.ADOcommands.GetConnected Error while connecting, Provider cannot be found, It may not be properly installed." I am using OraOLEDB.oracle provider. This provider work properly on other module (Administration) of this application but as I want to connect as client with same name and password I get above error. I have tried with MSDAORA(Oracle) but I don't get any success. Can anyone help me?

• phantom error "error parsing XML: unbound prefix"

  The error "error parsing XML: unbound prefix" shows up on my main layout: main.xml when I first open Eclipse. To make the error go away, all I have to do is make a modification to the file, then undo it, then hit save (have to make a change in order to be able to save file and thus trigger the new syntax check). My environment is: Fedora Eclipse Platform Version: 3.4.2 Based on build id: 20090211-1700 My target is Android API level 5. The first time I saw the error I spent a long time trying to track down "the problem" but later realized there isn't really a problem, it's just a phantom error.   My CSS: #content { border: 2px solid #4190d4; padding: 220px; background-color: #282828; margin-top: 65px; -moz-border-radius: 8px; -webkit-border-radius: 8px; } My jQuery: $("#header a").click(function() { $('#content').animate({padding: 300}, 500); } This code works perfectly fine in IE8, my #content div grows from 220px to 300px. In Firefox or Webkit-based browsers, though, my #content div first shrinks to 0px and then resizes to 300px. I'm using jQuery 1.4.2, Firefox 3.6 and Chrome 4.0.249.89. Any ideas?

I have created the Voter table in which I need to insert the record. • Efficient algorithm for finding largest eigenpair of small general complex matrix

  I am looking for an efficient algorithm to find the largest eigenpair of a small, general (non-square, non-sparse, non-symmetric), complex matrix, A, of size m x n. By small I mean m and n is typically between 4 and 64 and usually around 16, but with m not equal to n. This problem is straight forward to solve with the general LAPACK SVD algorithms, i.e. gesvd or gesdd. However, as I am solving millions of these problems and only require the largest eigenpair, I am looking for a more efficient algorithm. Additionally, in my application the eigenvectors will generally be similar for all cases. This lead me to investigate Arnoldi iteration based methods, but I have neither found a good library nor algorithm that applies to my small general complex matrix. Is there an appropriate algorithm and/or library?

• How do I get the member to which my custom attribute was applied?

  I'm creating a custom attribute in C# and I want to do different things based on whether the attribute is applied to a method versus a property. At first I was going to do new StackTrace().GetFrame(1).GetMethod() in my custom attribute constructor to see what method called the attribute constructor, but now I'm unsure what that will give me. What if the attribute was applied to a property? Would GetMethod() return a MethodBase instance for that property? Is there a different way of getting the member to which an attribute was applied in C#? [AttributeUsage(AttributeTargets.Method | AttributeTargets.Property, AllowMultiple = true)] public class MyCustomAttribute : Attribute Update: okay, I might have been asking the wrong question. From within a custom attribute class, how do I get the member (or the class containing the member) to which my custom attribute was applied? Aaronaught suggested against walking up the stack to find the class member to which my attribute was applied, but how else would I get this information from within the constructor of my attribute?

(based on this answer) I already have the mechanism how to catch an invalid route and the custom 404 page is served by my ErrorController/Handle404 action. My current implementation of Handle404: public ActionResult Handle404() { Response.StatusCode = 404; return View("NotFound"); } Currently, IIS serves the page as 404 - File or directory not found. The resource you are looking for might have been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable. (the standard IIS page, not my user friendly content) How can I include the 404 status code in the result served by the Handle404 action while still serving the content?

• Transalation of tasks in .NET 1.1 to .NET 3.5

  In .Net 1.1 I would run a stored procedure to fill a typed dataset. I would use a Datareader to fill the dataset for speed (though it was probably not necessary) Then I would use the Dataset to bind to multiple controls on the page so as to render the data to multiple CSS/javsript based tabs on the page. This would also reduce the database call to 1. So I know I could this in 3.5, but is there a better way. For example can one stored procedure create an EDM object to be used. Since the data is mainly readonly should I even bother changing or keep using the Stored proc -> Data set -> Bind individual controls to specific data tables

  I am a web developer for a Django-based site for a student organization, and I have the opportunity to make the website temporarily absurd for a day of general campus-wide debauchery and chaos (long story, doesn't matter.) What are your best ideas for web development practical jokes (that you could never use in the real world)? For example, one idea we had was to use a client-side script to convert each character to its upside down equivalent in Unicode, si?? ??i? ?ui????os. I'm not necessarily looking for Django-specific solutions. I imagine most of these things would happen on the front-end. I am also quite aware that usability will suffer considerably--the point is to be fun for a day, and there will always be a link to the normal version of the site. Also, everything must be relatively cosmetic and easily reversible--I'm happy to swap out static CSS/JS/HTML/templates/images, and even temporarily add a django view, but no messing with the data level!

• What's the next big thing after LINQ?

  I started using LINQ (Language Integrated Query) when it was still in beta, more specifically Microsoft .NET LINQ Preview (May 2006). Almost 4 years have passed and here we are using LINQ in a lot of projects for the most diverse tasks. I even wrote my final college project based on LINQ. You see how I like it. LINQ and more recently PLINQ (Parallel LINQ) give our jobs a great boost when it comes to more programming power and less lines of code leading us to more expressive and readable code. I keep thinking what could be the next big language improvement for C# after LINQ. I know there are some promissing language features coming as Code Contracts, etc, but nothing having the impact that LINQ had. What do you think could be the next big thing?

• jQTouch with PhoneGap on webOS

  I'm writing an application in PhoneGap that I want to run on iOS, Android, and webOS. jQTouch plays nice with everything on iOS and Android, but not webOS. Since the webOS Mojo framework is based on Prototype (which uses the $ variable), it's necessary to use jQuery in noConflict mode. I can handle that much. However, the problem is that I also want to use the jQTouch plugin. The jqtouch.js file uses $ throughout, causing JavaScript errors when that file is loaded. Is there a way to run the jQTouch plugin (or any plugin for that matter) in my PhoneGap application without interfering with Prototype?

I've came up with the following: S = Small complexity M = Medium complexity H = High complexity 1d = 1 day Create JDBC CRUD backend ( S=1d, M=5d, H=10d ) Create JSP/Servlet frontend for a CRUD app ( S=1d, M=10d, H=20d ) Create Swing desktop frontend ( S=1d, M=15d, H=30d) Create ORM based CRUD ... Create Webapp fronend with webframework ... This is thought for a Java "enterprise" developer. The other profile I have is SOA Developer, but I could not pass beyond: Create webservice ( S=.5d, M=2d, H=7d ) Q.- What other activities should a Java Developer be able to do? Q.- What activities should a SOA Developer be able to do? Please, help me with this, I know this is in the limit of the kind of questions that could be asked here, but I really need a little push on this, and I don't want to go to Yahoo Answers for this.

• Starting to make progress Was [MediaRecorder prepare() causes segfault]

  Folks, I have a situation where my MediaRecorder instance causes a segfault. I'm working with a HTC Hero, Android 1.5+APIs. I've tried all variations, including 3gpp and H.263 and reducing the video resolution to 320x240. What am I missing? The state machine causes 4 MediaPlayer beeps and then turns on the video camera. Here's the pertinent source: UPDATE: ADDING SURFACE CREATE INFO I have rebooted the device based on previous answer to similar question. UPDATE 2: I seem to be following the MediaRecorder state machine perfectly, and if I trap out the MR code, the blank surface displays perfectly and everything else functions perfectly. I can record videos manually and play back via MediaPlayer in my code, so there should be nothing wrong with the underlying code. I've copied sample code on the surface and surfaceHolder code. I've looked at the MR instance in the Debug perspective in Eclipse and see that all (known) variables seem to be instantiated correctly. The setter calls are all now implemented in the exaxct order specced in the state diagram. UPDATE 3: I've tried all permission combinations: CAMERA + RECORD_AUDIO+RECORD_VIDEO, CAMERA only, RECORD_AUDIO+RECORD_VIDEO This is driving me bats! :))) UPDATE 4: starting to work... but with puzzling results. Based on info in bug #5050, I spaced everything out. I have now gotten the recorder to actually save a snippet of video (a whole 2160 bytes!), and I did it by spacing the view visibility, prepare() and start() w.a.a.a.a.a.y out (like several hundred milliseconds for each step). I think what happens is that either bringing the surface VISIBLE has delayed processing or else the start() steps on the prepare() operation before it is complete. What is now happening, however, is that my simple timer tickdown counter is getting clobbered. Is it now that the preview and save operations are causing my main process thread to become unavailable? I'm recording only 10fps at 176x144. Referencing the above code, I've added a timer tickdown after setPreviewDisplay(), prepare() and start().   Hi, all! A few colleagues and I created a simple packet capturing application based on libpcap, GTK+ and sqlite as a project for a Networks Engineering course at our university. While it (mostly) works, I am trying to improve my programming skills and would appreciate it if members of the community could look at what we've put together. Is this a good place to ask for such a review? If not, what are good sites I can throw this question up on? The source code is hosted by Google Code (http://code.google.com/p/nbfm-sniffer) and an executable is available for download (Windows only, though it does compile on Linux and should compile on OS X Leopard as well provided one has gtk+ SDK installed). • A metaphor for Drupal module's inner workings

  What is the best application workflow metaphor for Drupal module? In PHP frameworks we think MVC-style. How do we think inside Drupal? Asumming I am writing some user-oriented module like Shop, Catalog or Forum. As far as I understand there are no or few MVC based modules. Should I generally treat Drupal modules (as sub-application) as a number of screens connected via forms and hyperlinks or there is a better way. My question may be a little bit speculative, but I hope someone will share my intent to think models, not just "scripts".

• UITableView backgroundColor always grey on iPad

  Hi, When I set the backgroundColor for my UITableView it works fine on iPhone (device and simulator) but NOT on the iPad simulator. Instead I get a light grey background for any color I set including groupTableViewBackgroundColor. Steps to reproduce: Create a new navigation-based project. Open RootViewController.xib and set the table view style to "Grouped". Add this responder to the RootViewController:- (void)viewDidLoad { [super viewDidLoad]; self.view.backgroundColor = [UIColor blackColor]; } Select Simulator SDK 3.2, build and run. You will get a black background (device and simulator). Select your target in the project tree. Click on Project : Upgrade Current Target for iPad. Build and run. You will get a light grey background. Revert the table view style to Plain and you will get a black background. Thanks for your help!
