  • Setup and configure a MVC4 project for Cloud Service(web role) and SQL Azure

    I aim at keeping this blog post updated and add related posts to it. Since there are a lot of these out there I link to others that has done kind of the same before me, kind of a blog-DRY pattern that I'm aiming for. I also keep all mistakes and misconceptions for others to see. As an example; if I hit a stacktrace I will google it if I don't directly figure out the reason for it. I will then probably take the most plausible result and try it out. If it fails because I misinterpreted the error I will not delete it from the log but keep it for future reference and for others to see. That way people that finds this blog can see multiple solutions for indexed stacktraces and I can better remember how to do stuff.     If you've been redirected here because you posted on a forum, or asked a question in an e-mail, the person wanted you to know how to get help quickly from a group of folks who are willing to do so - but whose time is valuable. You need to put a little effort into the question first to get others to assist. This is how to do that. It will only take you a moment to read... 1. State the problem succinctly in the title When an e-mail thread starts, or a forum post is the "head" of the conversation, you'll attract more helpers by using a descriptive headline than a vague one. This: "Driver for Epson Line Printer Not Installing on Operating System XYZ" Not this: "Can't print - PLEASE HELP" 2. Explain the Error Completely Make sure you include all pertinent information in the request. More information is better, there's almost no way to add too much data to the discussion. What you were doing, what happened, what you saw, the error message, visuals, screen shots, whatever you can include. This: "I'm getting error '5203 - Driver not compatible with Operating System since about 25 years ago' in a message box on the screen when I tried to run the SETUP.COM file from my older computer. It was a 1995 Compaq Proliant and worked correctly there.." Not this: "I get an error message in a box. It won't install." 3. Explain what you have done to research the problem If the first thing you do is ask a question without doing any research, you're lazy, and no one wants to help you. Using one of the many fine search engines you can most always find the answer to your problem. Sometimes you can't. Do yourself a favor - open a notepad app, and paste the URL's as you look them up. It helps others that have your same problem know that this is the correct answer. This: "I could really use some help here - if you have any pointers or things to try, I'd appreciate it." Not this: "I really need this done right now - why are there no responses?" This: "Thanks for those responses - that last one did the trick. Turns out I needed a new printer anyway, didn't realize they were so inexpensive now." Not this: <NULL> There are a lot of motivated people that will help you. Help them do that.

  • Postfix not sending/allowing receiving of messages after server (hardware) changed

    We had na old notebook runing Ubuntu 12.04 working as a web/ftp/mail server and it worked but since the notebook was a notebook and pretty old and unreliable, a desktop was bought to replace it before it stopped working all together. Due to issues with the new desktop's vídeo card, we couldn't use Ubuntu 12.04 so we installed Ubuntu 13.10 and wen't about configuring it. Since we removed the notebook from the network, we kept the same Computer Name and local IP address to make things as close to the old server as possible configuration-wise. However, something has gone wrong since Postfix is throwing error 451 4.3.0 lookup faillure on every attempt to send a mail, and no email can be received either. Our main.cf file is a copy of the one we were using (and working) on the old server (notice we use EHCP) # See /usr/share/postfix/main.cf.dist for a commented, more complete version # Debian specific: Specifying a file name will cause the first # line of that file to be used as the name. EDIT: Here are some issues MXToolBox reports to my domain, answering hopefully to @Teun Vink: BlackList Mail Server Web Server DNS Error 4 0 2 0 Warnings 0 0 0 3 Passed 0 6 3 12 So the domain is on some blacklist, but that doesn't explain the error at all No mail server issues found (except it's not working) Those two web server errors it's because i don't have HTTPS workin (No SSL Certificate) so the test fails Those 3 DNS warnings we're already there when it was working with the other machine and are related to stuff i can't control: SOA Refresh Value is outside of the recommended range SOA Expire Value out of recommended range SOA NXDOMAIN Value too high I've searched and as far as i can tell only the guys who sold the retail can change those values and they won't. Edit2: I half solved the issue.on the new machine postfix was installed but postfix-mysql waasn't so he couldn't connect to the database (rookie mistake). After fixing that, i can now send mails to the outsider without any issues, however i am still not able to receive mails from utside.   • Windows 7, HTTPS WebDav: Asks for password twice and fails. Any workarounds?

    Howdy. I have a Dav server running with PHP SabreDav (code.google.com/p/sabredav/wiki/Windows) on Cherokee at an HTTPS secured URL. It's set to use https, and uses Digest Authentication. I can log in with multiple browsers and a few third party clients (BitKinex and Java AnyClient can connect and browse as well, caveats below). However, when attempting to log in with Windows 7 (surprise, surprise), it asks for my password twice, then tells me that my folder is invalid. I have verified that the server is using Digest authentication. I've verified multiple times that third party software can connect. I even went out and bought a GoDaddy SSL certificate so my SSL wouldn't be self signed anymore. I've applied the registry hacks here: support.microsoft.com/kb/943280 (Note that the article says the "fix" already exists for Windows 7, I just need magical registry hax to get it to work) I've applied the registry hacks here: support.microsoft.com/kb/941050 I've applied the registry hacks here: support.microsoft.com/kb/841215 (Supposedly allows Basic Auth, which shouldn't apply, but why not?) All to no avail; Windows continues to ask for my password twice, then state that "The folder you entered does not appear to be valid. Please choose another." Try the command line? Sure: I've attempted to access with NET USE "https://dav.example.com/" password /USER:me (System error 59) I've attempted to access with NET USE "https://dav.example.com/" (System error 1790) I've attempted to access with NET USE "https://dav.example.com/subdir/" password /USER:me (System error 59) I've attempted to access with NET USE "https://dav.example.com/subdir/" (System error 1790) For good luck: ping dav.example.com ... works. And again, web browsers can access the share just fine, so can third party tools. Best I can tell at this point is "HAHA, NO WEBDAV FOR YOU ON WINDOWS 7" which would be fine except everyone who will be using this application... uses Windows 7. And most are not as persistent or pugnacious as I am. I feel like I've burned through every random suggestion I've found anywhere in the first 10 pages of Google on every search term I can think of. Any ideas? I need it to be Webdav, I need it to be over HTTPS, and I really do need a method to access it from Windows 7. EXTRA DETAIL: However, the "third party" programs I've tried have either been buggy, incomplete, or have silly ... "glitches." For example, BitKinex seems to fixate on any http error codes sent, so if there's a glitch reading a directory, BAM, that directory is always listed empty. Long directory listings also show up as blank, even though the transfer panel shows that directory listing is still taking place. In any case, BitKinex is useless for development purposes for the reasons above. And besides, I'm building this for people other than myself, people who will want to get this dav share working "the regular way."

    I have some experience with PHP but I have never even try to do this wit pure PHP, but now a friend of mine asked me to help him with this task so I sat down and write some code. What I'm asking is for opinion if this is the right way to do this when you want to use only PHP and is there anything I can change to make the code better.   • What's wrong with this vcl config for varnish-cache as load balancer?

    I have the current configurations active on my default.vcl varnish file on the machine that balances the load for other two machines (the other two machines also have varnish active). My intention is to have this server do only the load balancing and the other machines do the processing and also their own caching. My problem is that even with the config testing (not even a stress test or anything, just a few requests a minute) I get the guru meditation error and have to restart varnish.   • "Service Unavailable" when browsing to static HTML page in non-application IIS website on Windows 2003 (possibly SharePoint WSS 2.0 related?)

    Background: My client has an old Pentium III Windows 2003 server whose 16/36 GB disks are dying. On it he has a database-driven web site and email application that needs further customization by a developer (me). First we need to get it working on the new server. The original developer is no longer available to provide a system setup guide. So my client got a tech who imaged the old drives over to the new server and managed to get it booting. But the IIS-driven site no longer works. In fact it seems that IIS itself does not work. Problem: Service Unavailable when attempting to browse from the server itself to the URL for a local Web Site called test which I setup in IIS to serve a single static index.htm file. This I did to isolate the problem, and eliminate the client's application from the equation. The site is setup on port 80 with the host header "test.myclientsdomain.com", and I used the etc\hosts file to point that host at the local IP. I know the host entry took effect because I can ping it. When doing an iisreset, I get: Attempting start... Restart attempt failed. IIS Admin Service or a service dependent on IIS Admin is not active. It most likely failed to start, which may mean that it's disabled. Despite this message, the services all stay in the Started state. The only relevant System event logs I found are: Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1002 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:04:47 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: Application pool 'DefaultAppPool' is being automatically disabled due to a series of failures in the process(es) serving that application pool. Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1039 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:13:12 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: A process serving application pool 'DefaultAppPool' reported a failure. The process id was '5636'. The data field contains the error number. Data: 0000: 7e 00 07 80 ~.. And one Application event log: Event Type: Error Event Source: Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 Event Category: None Event ID: 1000 Date: 11/4/2012 Time: 11:34:04 PM User: N/A Computer: ALPHA1 Description: #50070: Unable to connect to the database STS_Config on ALPHA2\SharePoint. Check the database connection information and make sure that the database server is running. That last log tells me that the tech may have initially tried to have both the old and the new server running, by renaming the new server from ALPHA1 to ALPHA2. And perhaps SharePoint grabbed onto that change, and now can't tell that the machine name has been switched back to the old ALPHA1. But why would SharePoint interfere with a static IIS web site serving a single HTML file? The test site is not even within an Application pool (I clicked the Remove button.) What I have tried/eliminated: No relevant services seem to be disabled: IIS Admin, WWW Publishing, Sharepoint Timer Giving Full Control to All Users/Everyone on the c:\inetpub\test folder serving my test site. I can connect to and query the local SharePoint config database (ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT\STS_CONFIG) from SSMS. But when I try to do stsadm -o setconfigdb -connect -databaseserver ALPHA1\SHAREPOINT it tells me The SharePoint admininstration port does not exist. Please use stsadm.exe to create it. And when I do that, using the port 9487 specified in the IIS SharePoint Admin site config, it tells me the port is already in use. Needless to say, simply browsing to the admin site gives me a similar error about being unable to reach the config database. I didn't want to go further down the SharePoint path as it may be completed unrelated to my IIS issue, and I don't even know yet if SharePoint is required for this application to work. The app itself is ASP.Net/C#/Silverlight and a little MS Word integration (maybe that's where the SharePoint stuff comes in.)

    I am trying to delete a file from SharePoint using the list web service which is failing with the following error. Error Code: 0x81020030 Message: Invalid file name Detail: The file name you specified could not be used. It may be the name of an existing file or directory, or you may not have permission to access the file. Things I have tried I've tried the changes in #1372971 which has no helped. I have also tried the changes recommended on the Microsoft Social site, which has also not helped. I have confirmed that the txt file extension is not blocked as indicated here. In addition I can remove the file via the website, it is just on the web service that this fails. The permissions are correct (or rather not in play) as I am running as a SharePoint administrator, which is the same account that uploaded it via the copy web service.

How on earth could I work out what is going wrong here? The datepicker looks so much better but for the effort this looks like it might be to fix I may be incline to switch for a textbox which I validate when the submit button is pressed!   • MSDeploy doesn't deploy to remote server using MSBuild and Visual Studio 2010

    I'm currently running Visual Studio Team System 2010 RC and I'm trying to get the Build Service setup to build my solution and deploy 3 web applications in it. I've created a custom build configuration called Integration and I've setup the "IIS Web site/application name to use on the destination server" on the Package/Publish tab of the Properties for each of the web applications. In my Build Definition I've set the following arguments: /p:DeployOnBuild=True /p:DeployTarget=MSDeployPublish /p:MSDeployPublishMethod=InProc /p:MsDeployServiceUrl=http://my-server-name:8172/msdeploy.axd /p:EnablePackageProcessLoggingAndAssert=True However, when I run the build I get the following error, for all three web applications: Updating setAcl (RightContent). C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets(3481,5): error : Web deployment task failed. (Attempted to perform an unauthorized operation.) I don't think this is my actual problem though. This error is occuring after the following entry in the log: Updating setAcl This is what's causing the error message, but it appears that MSDeploy is trying to deploy to the local IIS on the Build server, not the server I specified with the MsDeployServiceUrl parameter. After looking at the targets file at C:\Program Files\MSBuild\Microsoft\VisualStudio\v10.0\Web\Microsoft.Web.Publishing.targets, I added the EnablePackageProcessLoggingAndAssert, which adds extra logging. The log shows an emptry string for the value of MsDeployServiceUrl. I also noticed in the target that MsDeployServiceUrl has a lowercase s, which is somewhat confusing because the task name MSDeployPublish has an uppercase S. I tried using it using uppercase, then again using lowercase, but neither worked. A couple other things to note: My build service is running as NETWORK SERVICE. The server I'm trying to deploy to is on another domain. I also tried adding /p:username=mydomain\myusername /p:password=mypassword to the MSBuild paramter list, but that didn't help. Does anyone know if I'm supplying the correct parameters? Or provide me with the correct ones? Thanks

  • Entity Framework with MySQL - Timeout Expired while Generating Model

    I've constructed a database in MySQL and I am attempting to map it out with Entity Framework, but I start running into "GenerateSSDLException"s whenever I try to add more than about 20 tables to the EF context. An exception of type 'Microsoft.Data.Entity.Design.VisualStudio.ModelWizard.Engine.ModelBuilderEngine+GenerateSSDLException' occurred while attempting to update from the database. The exception message is: 'An error occurred while executing the command definition. See the inner exception for details.' Fatal error encountered during command execution. Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding. There's nothing special about the affected tables, and it's never the same table(s), it's just that after a certain (unspecific) number of tables have been added, the context can no longer be updated without the "Timeout expired" error. Sometimes it's only one table left over, and sometimes it's three; results are pretty unpredictable. Furthermore, the variance in the number of tables which can be added before the error indicates to me that perhaps the problem lies in the size of the query being generated to update the context which includes both the existing table definitions, and also the new tables that are being added to it. Essentially, the SQL query is getting too large and it's failing to execute for some reason. If I generate the model with EdmGen2 it works without any errors, but the generated EDMX file cannot be updated within Visual Studio without producing the aforementioned exception. In all likelihood the source of this problem lies in the tool within Visual Studio given that EdmGen2 works fine, but I'm hoping that perhaps others could offer some advice on how to approach this very unique issue, because it seems like I'm not the only person experiencing it. One suggestion a colleague offered was maintaining two separate EBMX files with some table crossover, but that seems like a pretty ugly fix in my opinion. I suppose this is what I get for trying to use "new technology". :(

In the windows service application I have the following code in the "OnStart" method - the error occurs when registering the Channel - ChannelServices.RegisterChannel(tcpPipe, true); As far as I can tell there are no other processes using port 9998 ...     I have been struggling to load the rJava package in R.     Hi, I am making my Master's Thesis with LaTeX, but I can't get the provided style to work. Specifically, I get the error 'Undefined control sequence' when using the function makeformaltitlepages, which is defined in mscthesis.sty. On the internet, the only answer I could find is the straightforward 'you probably made a typo', or 'you probably forgot to include the package', but I have reason to believe neither of those apply to me. I am quite sure that the function exists, for when I add a little verification, using the @ifundefined command, the logfile shows that the function actually does exist. And, as can be seen in the following piece of code, I also include the package: \usepackage{mscthesis} % setup information like author, company, title, etc. \begin{document} \formatmatter \thispagestyle{empty} \maketitle \makeatletter \@ifundefined{makeformaltitlepages}{\message{Function is not defined.}}{\message{Function is defined.}} \makeatother \makeformaltitlepages{\input{abstract}} % add chapters, sections, etc. and end the document Now, the output shows the line "Function is defined." just before the output of maketitle (which I think is rather strange on its own, but that might be a flushing issue), followed by the following infinitely repeated error (well, cut off after 100 times by LaTeX): Function is defined. // some gibberish about font info ! While the error keeps repeating, the line that starts with '#4' cycles between the following four lines: #4 \errhelp \@err@ ... \let \@err@ ... \@empty \def \MessageBreak... \endgroup Ok, so, do any of you have a suggestion of how I might continue to hunt this bug? Or what blatantly obvious mistake did I make?

    Hi Everyone, I want to query the DB through LINQ writing manual SQL, my linq method is: var q = db.TableView.Where(sqlAfterWhere); returnValue = q.Count(); this method queries well if the value passed to variable "sqlAfterWhere" is: (this variable is String type) it.Name = 'xyz' but what if i want to use IN clause, using a sub query. (i need to use 'it' before every column name in the above query to work), i cant use 'it' before the sub query columns as its a separate query, so what should i do, if i dont use any thing, and use column names directly it gives error saying " could not be resolved" where is my column names with out 'it' at the begining. So the query not working is: (this is a string passed to the variable above): it.Name IN (SELECT Name FROM TableName WHERE Address LIKE '%SomeAddress%') the errors come out as: Name could not be resolved Address could not be resolved The exact error is: "'Name' could not be resolved in the current scope or context. Make sure that all referenced variables are in scope, that required schemas are loaded, and that namespaces are referenced correctly., near simple identifier, line 6, column 25." Same error for "Address as well if i use 'it.' before these columns it gives error as: "The element type 'Edm.Int32' and the CollectionType 'Transient.collection[Transient.rowtype(GroupID,Edm.Int32(Nullable=True,DefaultValue=))]' are not compatible. The IN expression only supports entity, primitive, and reference types. , near WHERE predicate, line 6, column 14." Thanks for the help

    I installed JDK 7 and Eclipse 3.6M6. Then, I added JRE 7 as a new JRE execution environment in Eclipse, and set the compiler compliance level to Java 7.   • Localize WiX installer which uses the Firewall extension

    I've got a WiX installer project which uses MSBuild to generate the MSI file. The WXS file includes the WiX firewall extension: xmlns:fire="http://schemas.microsoft.com/wix/FirewallExtension" I've defined two cultures in the MSBuild file with the following definition: <PropertyGroup> ... <Cultures>en-us;no-no</Cultures> </PropertyGroup> I've also added the translated resources: <ItemGroup> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\Firewall_no-no.wxl" /> <EmbeddedResource Include="lang\WixUI_no-no.wxl" /> </ItemGroup> These represents translation to Norwegian for the Firewall extension and the WixUI extension. When I run the build it succeeds with the en-us part, but the no-no part fails with the following error messages: C:\delivery\Dev\wix30_public\src\ext\FirewallExtension\wixlib\FirewallExtension.wxs(19): error LGHT0102: The localization variable !(loc.WixSchedFirewallExceptionsInstall) is unknown. Please ensure the variable is defined. .... Couple of issues: I don't know where the C:\delivery directory comes from. I don't have such a directory. The localization variables referenced in the error message have been translated in the Firewall_no-no.wxl file. When I run MSBuild with more detailed information I see the following output right before the error message: Task "Light" Command: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\Light.exe -cultures:no-no -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\WixUIExtension.dll" -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows I nstaller XML v3\bin\WixUtilExtension.dll" -ext "C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Installer XML v3\bin\WixFirewallExtension.dll" -loc lang\Firewall_no-no.wxl -loc lang\WixUI_no-no.wxl -out F:\Projects\MyProd\MyProj\Installer\bin\Debug\no-no\MyInstaller.msi -pdbout F:\Projects\MyProd\MyProj\Installer\bin\Debug\no-no\MyInstaller.wixpdb obj\Debug\MyProj.wixobj As the details show, the MSBuild task results in having two -loc parameters to the Light executable. Not sure if that would be the reason for this problem. Any ideas on how to solve this?

  • TeamCity stopped working once I added NUnit to the mix

    I'm struggling a lot trying to get our build server going. I am currently running tests in a Windows XP virtual machine, and have installed TeamCity v5.0.3, build 10821. I am using NUnit v2.5.3. I finished the initial setup with TeamCity without any issues at all, provided that I use the sln2008 build runner that makes the entire process almost brainless. It's really quite nice that way, and very satisfying to see your first successful automated build. Now it's time to kick it up a notch and I wanted to get NUnit working. I keep the NUnit 2.5.3 assemblies in an external libs folder in SVN, so I checked that out onto the test system. I selected NUnit 2.5.3 from the build runner options, as the online instructions had recommended. But when I build, I get the following error: Window1.xaml.cs(14,7): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘NUnit’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Window1.xaml.cs(28,10): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘Test’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Window1.xaml.cs(28,10): error CS0246: The type or namespace name ‘TestAttribute’ could not be found (are you missing a using directive or an assembly reference?) Everything compiles great in the IDE. From finding blog posts and submitting comments, I got some advice and confirmed the following: I have the HintPath value set properly in my project file (points to the external lib) I can also do a full Release and Debug build from the command line using msbuild I have tried do use the NUnit installer so nunit.framework.dll gets registered into the GAC I have changed the build agent's logon account to be a user on the test system, rather than LOCAL SYSTEM. Nothing seems to help... can anyone else here offer me some advice on what to try next?

  • MSBuild on TeamCity Server can't find AL.exe

    I'm having a problem on my TeamCity CI build server where during compilation I get the following error: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Microsoft.Common.targets(2342, 9): error MSB3086: Task could not find "AL.exe" using the SdkToolsPath "" or the registry key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.0A". Make sure the SdkToolsPath is set and the tool exists in the correct processor specific location under the SdkToolsPath and that the Microsoft Windows SDK is installed I've found similar reports from a year ago when people were upgrading to .NET 3.5, for example this one. In that case, installing the latest SDK solved the issue, however I have already installed the latest SDK (Microsoft Windows SDK for Windows 7 and .NET Framework 4) on my build server. The MSBuild tools are all there on the server, in a folder called C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319 and AL.exe exists in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v7.1\Bin\NETFX 4.0 Tools However the registry key mentioned in the error message does not exist. So, it seems like there is something wrong with the installation/configuration of MSBuild. This error only happens for projects that have embedded resources, which require AL.exe. Please, anyone solved this issue or have any clues what's wrong?
