  Can anyone provide the tc command to limit upload bandwidth per user in Debian Lenny? • Image storage social network (Host plan)

  I'm wondering what the best way is to host images on a social network site. Let's say that I expect my social network to reach 500.000 users in 2 years time. That would mean that if every user uploaded about 100 images and every image is 1 MB that I will have to need: 500.000 * 100 * 1 MB = 50.000.000 MB which means 50 terabytes. I'm not sure how I can best setup my hosting plan in order to have a solid bases to store my images and eventually store video files as well. Which hosting plan would you recommend me to start with and how can I enhance the plan?

• A simple way to redirect http://mysite.com to http://mysite.com/mylink with Apache?

  Just starting to try to get the hang of how all the directives and options work under Apache. I'd like to do a redirect with my one site (only running one site on the server) so that when a request comes in to http://mysite.com the server automatically redirects them to a sub-url of http://mysite.com/mylink. I have tried putting redirects into the file located in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled to rewrite this, but then the top level domain URL complains it isn't redirecting properly. I think what I want is a browser redirect, and thought using RewriteEngine On RewriteRule ^/$ /mylink [L,R] would work, but putting it into an .htaccess file didn't work (it redirected but immediately gave a 500 internal server error.) Putting it into the file in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled gives a configuration error when trying to restart Apache. I know it's something simple...but what am I missing?

  Here is my issues, which i am currently having, in my windows 7, When i go to one specific folder, .Please take a look, This is not my file, but just to get an idea, there is 10 file max no more than 500 MB, i am not able to remove it, or cut it, or move it, it starts that green bar loading and never finish, The problem is, after getting into this folder, my SONY VAIO starts, overheating and if i did not restart, nothing can stop it to be cool down .   I'm looking for software to create street map images that show the route from address 1 to address 2. It needs to be able to create the map images from either a database file that contains the addresses, a delimited text file that lists the addresses to route in each row, or an Excel file. I need to do this to create custom maps in bulk- 500 to 20,000 quantity from the data file. The purpose is to provide a map with a route from a location (address 1) to a retail store (address 2). The maps will be printed on a postcard. I have the data. I just need the mapping software. Is there software available that can do this?

• wxPthon problems with Wrapping StaticText

  Hello. I am having an issue with wxPython. A simplified version of the code is posted below (white space, comments, etc removed to reduce size - but the general format to my program is kept roughly the same). When I run the script, the static text correctly wraps as it should, but the other items in the panel do not move down (they act as if the statictext is only one line and thus not everything is visible). If I manually resize the window/frame, even just a tiny amount, everything gets corrected and displays as it is should. I took screen shots to show this behavior, but I just created this account and thus don't have the required 10 reputation points to be allowed to post pictures. Why does it not display correctly to begin with? I've tried all sorts of combination's of GetParent().Refresh() or Update() and GetTopLevelParent().Update() or Refresh(). I've tried everything I can think of but cannot get it to display correctly without manually resizing the frame/window. Once re-sized, it works exactly as I want it to.   I developed a intranet applications with Rails (3.2) for one of my customers. There will be around 30-40 employees working with it. Backend is MySQL (5). What would be the best way to determine the servers specs needed? Given: max. load will be roughly 2400 (40*60) HTTP requests (mixed GET / POST) per hour. 15% of these calls are JSON calls (iOS) avg request will make between 5-10 database calls 500-800 SQL INSERTS per day webpages are fairly simple (no images, just text) avg webpage is 15 request (css/js/etc) and total size is 35-45 KB More specific, since they need access from multiple geographical locations, we are thinking of running a bitnami Ruby stack in the AWS cloud (uptime is important). Any thoughts on a AWS Instance (small/medium) and Utilization (light/medium/heavy) ? Thanks!

  I have a 500 GB USB-disk which has been used as a backup device for a few years now, but now fails without telling me why. This is a Dell box with Intel USB-controllers (so the NVIDEA problem does not apply here). I have previously had problems with a Git package marking a non-existent directory for backup (adding it make the backup succeede). The inaccessible boot partition problem described in Windows Backup fails with 0x80070002: "The system cannot find the file specified" does not apply to me. I would appreciate hints on where to look to identify why my backup fails so I can fix it.

• How to tell httpd to preserve the proxied error message?

  I have an httpd server proxying the requests to 2 different tomcat servers. One of my server handles the authentication and returns a specific http error code 521 when the user already have a running session. My issue is httpd automatically maps this 521 error code to a 500 (internal server error) and then my client can not handle it properly. I have tried to disable ProxyErrorOverride, to remove the /error/HTTP_INTERNAL_SERVER_ERROR.html.var but it does not changes anything. • Inexpensive degaussers or HDD shredders?

  I do a lot of work for a small cash-strapped business that has a lot of active hard drives, most are consumer-grade SATA of about five years of age, and predictably they are dying at an increasing rate, and a lot of the time they can't even be detected, let alone complete a zero-out cycle. Right now those drives are just being stored, but that can't continue forever. We've got a couple bad LTO tapes it'd be nice to deal with, too. There are very real security and legal issues that make dropping them off with someone who claims they'll be properly destroyed a gamble. I've looked around at degaussers and HDD shredders, and the ones that don't look like they come from some guy in his basement all seem to be $3000+, which is hard to swallow right now. Is there anything out there in the $500-1500 range that you would recommend? (Speed isn't a big issue, if it takes several minutes or even hours per drive, that's completely OK, we've only got 10 or so thus far.)

  I have a 500 GB file that I plan on backing up remotely. The file changes often. I'll be rsyncing it from a desktop to a server. Both can run rsync client or server. What is the proper command for this? The ones I've tried sofar has been taking forever or simply acted strange. Example and results: rsync -cv --partial --inplace --no-whole-file /desktop/file1 myserver.com::module/file1 Seems to work, but only if I do it twice (?!). Also, slow. Does the above command do the checksumming on both computers, or only on the sending one? Is it correct otherwise?

  Hi, I am trying to setup a load balanced web server scenario, using two HAproxy load balancers and two debian web servers following this guide http://www.howtoforge.com/setting-up-a-high-availability-load-balancer-with-haproxy-keepalived-on-debian-lenny. the setup is working but the results of simple performance benchmarking is not what I expected. I tried apache benchmark tool to send lots of requests to servers (one time directly testing one of the web servers and the other time testing through the load balancer) using the command "ab -n 1000000 -c 500 http://IP/index.html", but the test results shows better performance for the single server without load balancer. can any one tell me if I'm going wrong on some thing?

  I've got a set of RewriteCond rules that test for various mobile devices and then set environment variables like "env=device:.iphone" or "env=device:.smartphone" if the useragent matches an iPhone or Android device. Ideally I'd like to be able to test for a variable being there, and then write in a custom ErrorDocument string. But an apache doesn't seem to work in this case.   I have an application deployed on WebLogic 10.3, which exhibits a strange behavior. I am running a constant (not too high) load on my application (20 concurrent users, running a light activity). The response time is reasonable (well below 100ms after the application stabilizes) Memory consumption seems fine (My application creates a lot of short-living objects, but they are garbaged collected so the overall memory consumption stays under 500 mb). Threads stats seem healthy as well: And yet, after I leave my test running for a while, more and more execute threads ("[ACTIVE] ExecuteThread: '3' for queue: 'weblogic.kernel.Default (self-tuning)'") are created, until eventually the application crashes: This test hasn't been running for a long time (All the new threads that you don't see in the first screenshot were created while I was writing this question), and I've seen much more threads being created. Any idea why these threads are being created?

  One of our clients is using modx v.0.9.6.3 with eForm. They also have their own exchange server and web hosting is done through us. We used the eForm v.1.4.4.5 to send out emails. However, they cannot get any emails from this form and when addressed to [email protected] it instantly gets to 500 Internal Server Error when the form is submitted. Note: the eForm is successfully sent when the receiver is anyone but the client. I have successfully received the email form report from a work email, and also personal email.

  My root partition was filling up, with only 500 mbs left, I wanted to resize my root partition from 20 Gb to 40Gb So I resized my partition by using these steps: Using Gparted to resize another partition to give space for the EXT4 Using fdisk, deleting the root partition (on /dev/sda2), and creating it again using the new size resize2fs /dev/sda2 Updating grub2 But now the problem is that although I can boot in my new partition and the new partition shows it is 40Gb, but the free size was still 500mb. So I booted from a LiveCD and checked with e2fsck -p /dev/sda2, it reported clean. So I added the -f flag (force check), still, the drive is full.

So I went to go install them and I created a new file at /etc/php.d/zend.ini and initially I inserted the value of extension=/usr/local/ioncube/ioncube_loader_lin_5.3.so and restarted httpd at which point it told me: The ionCube Loader is a Zend-Engine extension and not a module Please specify the Loader using 'zend_extension' in php.ini PHP Fatal error: Unable to start ionCube Loader module in Unknown on line 0 So I changed the contents of zend.ini to zend_extension=/usr/...etc. Now when I attempt to restart httpd I get this error: Starting httpd: (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address [::]:80 (98)Address already in use: make_sock: could not bind to address 0.0.0.0:80 no listening sockets available, shutting down Unable to open logs I can't even run /etc/init.d/httpd stop without it erroring. I've since removed zend.ini to see if that's what caused it and it doesn't seem to be. Any ideas?

• is there a way to prespecify to overwrite files with same name?

  Connections to network drives are ridiculously slow (e.g. 15kb/sec on really good days) and when I'm copying files I leave my desk. My problem is when there is a file with the same name to be overwritten, is there a way to specify in advanced to overwrite files? I know it has the option "do same for next x conflicts" but that doesn't popup until (in some cases) a long time after the files start copying. See my dilemma? Example: copying 500 files, estimated time 2 hours, I leave, after 10 minutes message comes up about file with same name and asks if it should overwrite (in this time copying stalls), I come back 30 minutes latter to find only the files in the 10 minutes copied. Out of curiosity how could the network speed be so bad? I asked the boss and he said because it gets routed around a lot and is just bad :(

• Will a higher hard drive size affect performance

  My laptop came with a 500 GB hard drive. I use my laptop for storing my digital photographs, and only have about 14 GB of file storage left on the original hard drive. I have a 750 GB external hard drive, but am leery of relying on it for primary storage as I tend to knock things over and it has already crashed once and I lost a lot of the files. I am looking at a 1 TB internal hard drive, but am concerned if storing so much data will affect the computer's performance. Should I also increase RAM from 4 to 8 GB (the limit for my 64-bit, Windows 7, Asus A54C laptop)?

• php crashes when I try to add extensions

  Hi all, I am trying to install phpmyadmin on my web server with Windows 2008 and iis 7. PHP is running fine and I have several sites that rely on it. When installing phpmyadmin - it has errors at the bottom that crypt and mbstring are not properly installed. When I try to add the php_mcrypt.dll and/or the php_mbstring.dll to the php.ini file (I verified the location and the right file through phpinfo) it crashes. I get a 500 error on all the websites, and I get an error on the server saying FastCGI has failed. Does anyone know how to fix this or why it is happening? Shouldn't I be able to add extenstions? I have the dll files in the extension folder, which is referenced in the php.ini and other extensions (installed previously) are working as expected. Other info: php version 5.2.8, pdo driver for mysql version 5.0.51a Thanks in advance!

• Resizing partition in Windows 7: how long does it take?

  Okay, maybe this is me worrying about nothing, but... I have a 500 Gb. external drive where I want to create a second partition. I plug it into my Windows 7 box, use Disk Manager and pick the "Shrink Volume" option. It says that the maximum amount to shrink is around 150 Gb. I hit "OK" and it starts working... and it's been going on for about half an hour. The light of the external HD is constantly working. Disk Manager is greyed out and has the "does not respond" message on the top bar; basically, it's behaving as a non-responding application. Is this normal for a drive of this size, or did the application hang? How long would it typically take for a drive like this to resize its partition?
