• Non-Apple RAID card for Mac PRO (TOWER)

  I have the following: MAC PRO (Model Number: A1186) (PCIe - SLOTS) At present I am using the software RAID however I wish to move to the hardware raid because of the following: Performance (4 x 300gb SATA II in RAID 5) Redundancy (Raid 5, 1 drive can fail and system will be online) I do not wish to use the Apple RAID card (very expensive), I would like to use an aftermarket one which is cheaper. Questions: Does anyone have a WORKING aftermarket RAID card working in their MAC PRO (TOWER)? -(Have done some research, ROCKETRAID, need confirmation) If so to the above, does it work from boot? • Mac Parallels - Bridged network

  I am new to Apple and my task is to install VMs on a Mac server. I am trying to install 4 VMs and I want them to have separate IPs and be visible on the network as separate machines. What are my options? My research shows me that I can use a bridged network, but I have to select an adapter. I have only two network adapters, does that mean I can only have 2 VMs? And when I configure the 2 VMS, will my actual server have internet connection? Or does it use the Mac's address?

• GitLab Unicorn Service crashes all the time, 502 Error

  I used the Installer of Gitlab CE and so far everything looks well. Then when finished the installation I always got 502 Error on my website, since then I did a little research, then I saw that my gitlab service unicorn restarts/crashes every 10 seconds, so I assume this is the reason why I get 502, but I don't know why it crashes all the time. How can I prevent this? • What can go wrong with a GLIBC upgrade?

  I recently installed a piece of software that my group needs for a research project starting next September. Turns out the software has a known crash bug when used with glibc 2.12.1. My boss asked if we can upgrade glibc on the server that's supposed to run it. Cue my skeptical silence.... At some point, I got it into my brain that messing with glibc was about as good an idea as messing with a hungry puma; however, I've been unable to determine the source of this belief. So, if I go ahead with this: Am I doing something flagrantly stupid (e.g. I won't fix my problem, I will brick my server, or I will initiate a zombie apocalypse)? What can go wrong? What is likely to go wrong? How do I avoid the answers to 2 and 3?

• Transferring Microsoft CRM data

  My boss has asked me to transfer data from the current Microsoft CRM 4.0 server to a new one. I myself haven't used CRM at all. I've done some research and come across various ways to import data from different sources. These methods include using CSV files and Data Maps. This seems very cumbersome and unnecessary since the data is already in a CRM. Would someone please direct to some guides for full/partial data transferral from this current CRM to a new one? Thanks

• Redirect to ADFS login

  My company has switched to Office 365 and we like it, but we would really like for the ADFS single sign on to be more simplified. We have to go to login.microsoftonline.com then type in the username, then you have to click the link that appears at the bottom. Then you have to type in your username again and password. So we have come up with the idea that we could just redirect everyone to this page, but after lots of research into this, it seems like it's not possible to do a DNS redirect to a path. Does anyone know any other type of redirect that we could try? I'm thinking about trying to see if I can have a DNS entry go to our TMG and then have the TMG redirect to a path. But I'm not sure how the ADFS server knows where to go after that, so it might just log us in and not go anywhere. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

• Puppet performance compared to cfengine

  I'm considering using Puppet or cfengine. Key factors are performance, and research on the internet suggests cfengine uses less memory and CPU cycles compared to puppet. However, puppet seems easier to use. I need to manage several web servers, as well as handheld tablets and machines that will only connect to some central control servers periodically. All are Linux machines. Would I be able to use either puppet or cfengine for this? And if so, does puppet still make poor use of resources? I'd like to use puppet because it seems simpler, but a lot of the articles I've found refer to cfengine 2 - is cfengine 3 easier to configure? Thanks

• Too many connectons to 212.192.255.240

  Recently, my Internet slowed down drastically. I downloaded a tool to see the TCP/IP connections from my Vista computer. I found out that a lot TCP/IP connections are being connected to 212.192.255.240 through SVCHost. It seems that it is trying to connect to different ports. I think that my computer is being infected with some kind of malware etc. But I am not sure how to get rid of it. I did a little bit of research on this IP but found nothing. Any suggestions are highly apprecitated.

• Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

I am doing a little research on where small companies would go on the internet to get answers for technology related questions. Could be around sales, servers, programming, etc. Clearly superuser.com, serverfault.com, and stackoverflow.com are excellent starting points. I am just wondering if anyone has heard of any others. Think a "facebook" that links technology providers with small companies to help answer questions and potentially provide/offer solutions. Thanks!

• configure time sync for azure VMs

  I have several ExtraSmall-sized Azure VMs (PaaS / Cloud Service based) that are all experiencing drifting of the Windows clock. Research showed that this is quite common, especially in VMs with shared cores. Unfortunately even after configuring the w32time service to sync with time.windows.com and forcing a resync (w32tm /resync), there seems to be a time difference of 2 seconds to the configured NTP server. Though Microsoft states that w32tm is not meant as a high-precision sync tool, a difference of 2 seconds is (IMO) quite a lot for server-activities/processing. What does one have to do to get more accurate time sync?

  i'm doing some research on how browsers support TLS-SRP (RFC5054). I know that TLS-SRP is implemented in GnuTLS, OpenSSL as of release 1.0.1, Apache mod_gnutls, cURL, TLS Lite and SecureBlackbox. I don't find any fresh source of information, only this from 2011: http://sim.ivi.co/2011/07/compare-tls-cipher-suites-for-web.html I'm testing them manually at the moment, but as far as i know nobody seems to support it. My interest is then in understanding if browsers are planning to support these ciphersuites in the future, apart from the current state. • Real time mirroring between two sql server databases

  Hi, I'm a c# programmer, not a DBA and I've had the (mis)fortune to be handed a database admin task. So please bear this in mind when answering this question. What I've been asked to do is to create a real time two-way mirror between two databases with a 10 Megabit connection between them. So when either changes it updates the other. This is not a standard data mirroring/failover task where one DB is the master and the other is a backup - both are live and each needs to instantly reflect changes made to the other. In my head this sounds like a tall order, one which may even be impossible - after all in a rapidly changing environment with lots of users this is going to be massively resource intensive and create locks and queues of jobs all over the place. Is it possible? If so, can anyone either give me some basic instructions and/or point me at some places to start my reading and research? Cheers, Matt

  I need a monitoring system, much like ganglia / nagios that is build for the cloud. I need it to support : Adding / removing nodes dynamically. (Node shuts down, dose not imply node failure...) Dynamic node based categorization, meaning node can identify them self as being part of group X (ganglia gets this almost right, but lacks the dynamic part...) Does not require multicast support (generally not allowed in cloud based setups) Plugins for recent cool stuff such as Hadoop, Cassandra, Mongo would be cool. More features include: External API, web interface and co. I've looked at Ganglia, munin and they both seem be almost there (but not exactly). I would also go for reasonably priced Software as Service solution. I'm currently doing research, so Suggestions are highly appreciated. Thank you, Maxim

• Windows Server 2008 Scheduled Tasks not running - 0x80041323 - Reduce Number of tasks running in the specified context?

  I am getting the following problem on a number of windows 2008 servers. 0x80041323 Task Scheduler failed to start task \Reporting" in TaskEngine "S-1-5-18:NT AUTHORITY\System:Service:" for user "NT AUTHORITY\System". User Action: Reduce the number of tasks running in the specified user context. I've done lots of research around the web but have been unable to come up with a working answer. I have found some information suggesting increasing a value in the registry key "TasksInMemoryQueue" which I have done, but even setting this as high as 500 has not helped. I have rebooted the server after setting this value. The server does run a high volume of Scheduled tasks, there could be 150 or so running at any one time, but certainly not 500. The scheduled tasks are all running under the system user. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Fast Lightweight Image Comparisson Metric Algorithm

  Hi All, I am developing an application for the Android platform which contains 1000+ image filters that have been 'evolved'. When a user selects a photo I want to present the most relevant filters first. This 'relevance' should be dependent on previous use cases. I have already developed tools that register when a filtered image is saved; this combination of filter and image can be seen as the training data for my system. The issue is that the comparison must occur between selecting an image and the next screen coming up. From a UI point of view I need the whole process to take less that 4 seconds; select an image- obtain a metric to use for similarity - check against use cases - return 6 closest matches. I figure with 4 seconds I can use animations and progress dialogs to keep the user happy. Due to platform contraints I am fairly limited in the computational expense of the algorithm. I have implemented a technique adapted from various online tutorials for running C code on the G1 and hence this language is available Specific Constraints; Qualcomm® MSM7201A™, 528 MHz Processor 320 x 480 Pixel bitmap in 32 bit ARGB ~ 2 seconds computational time for the native method to get the metric ~ 2 seconds to compare the metric of the current image with training data This is an academic project so all ideas are welcome, anything you can think of or have heard about would be of interest to me. My ideas; I want to keep the complexity down (O(n*m)?) by using pixel data only rather than a neighbourhood function I was looking at using the Colour historgram/Greyscale histogram/Texture/Entropy of the image, combining them to make the measure. There will be an obvious loss of information but I need the resultant metric to be substantially smaller than the memory footprint of the image (~0.512 MB) As I said, any ideas to direct my research would be fantastic. • Apple RAID configuration vs Hardware RAID

  I am researching external HDD's capable or RAID 1 to store a large amount of video content during overseas filming. After filming, the content will be brought back to the office and offloaded onto our storage server. After doing some research, I've found that I can buy an external drive with a built in RAID controller, or I can buy an external drive, with 2 HDD's, that I can configure in a RAID 1 array using the OS. RAID 1 is what we're looking for. I've done some reading on software RAID vs. hardware RAID, but the resources I've found don't discuss performance as it relates to video content or what happens to a software RAID when the computer dies. Question 1: Will the hardware RAID be more performant when dealing with large video files? Question 2: If the mac dies, does my RAID die with it (will my data be accessible on another mac)?

• Files hidden on USB hard disk because of virus, how to clean?

  I have 1 GB hard drive. First all of its contents were gone after a virus got in (when I have the drive to someone else). After research found that it was a virus may be. I run Nortan antivus and removed certain virus. Then ran malewarebytes, now ad-aware and avg 2011 antivirus. Now i could see the files on my other computer. But now I have hooked this to my new macbook pro (windows installation) and i can't see the files. The antivurs does find all the files. MacOSX wrote a 400 MB directory there which i can see but nothing else. How to fix this? Which program will fix it?

• How can we control the device driver load order in Windows XP ?

  We are trying to install both an HP scanner and a Kodak scanner on an XP machine and the problem is that that HP's scanner driver always places itself into the first and default scanner device position. We are using an automation software on that machine which must use the Kodak scanner as the default scanner. The HP flatbed isn't needed to be the default scanner on that machine. It will always be used manually and through its own software. Our developers did some research 2 years ago couldn't find a solution. Nowadays we are preparing to expand our user base and this problem did surface again on machines with the same configuration. I did a more aggresive search pn the net and found some tips like this one : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/115486 I couldn't realize how to suit this solution to my scenario. Could someone please point me to the right direction ?

• Using WebSphere CloudBurst with PowerVM to AIX virtualization over a cloud

  hi there we are studying the virtualization option to reduce our datacenter cost, and this research was assigned to me. we looked into alternatives and we almost reached a conclusion that PowerVM is the only option to virtualize pSeries servers. we found no signs of cloud support explicitly mentioned in any document, however there was the mention of CloudBurst. from the videos we watched and the documents we read, it seems that CloudBurst is more oriented towards Application Servers (WebSphere Software). but our environment is not relying only on WebSphere. we have some banking applications, Oracle Databases and MQ/Broaker. the question is: 1- can we virtualize the existing applications (all running AIX) on a cloud running on top of some of the existing servers? (given that we do the sizing properly) 2- is PowerVM to run on top of CloudBurst? 3- if the above solution is applicable, is this some sort of HA solution (since the VM will run on top of multiple physical boxes, while the same physical box will run multiple live images) thanks for your help

• Ubuntu 9.10 x64 has no sound, while Ubuntu 9.04 32 bit does.

  I installed Ubuntu 9.10 x64 recently. Up until now I've been on 32 bit Ubuntu. For the first time since installing it, I went and tried to play a Youtube video. There was no sound. So a quick test to the system reveals that nothing will play sound (And I've tried turning the volume too full, as some have said output is quite quiet, but there is no sound at all). Further research shows that in sound preferences, the only output device listed was Dummy Output. Why would it work in 9.04 x86 and not 9.10 x64? While booting up, and occasionally with the sound preferences dialog open, I get a loud click (even though it isn't recognising my sound card). It's a Dell Studio 17 laptop. I'm not sure what the exact model of sound card is.

• Why doesn't gcc remove this check of a non-volatile variable?

  This question is mostly academic. I ask out of curiosity, not because this poses an actual problem for me. Consider the following incorrect C program. #include <signal.h> #include <stdio.h> static int running = 1; void handler(int u) { running = 0; } int main() { signal(SIGTERM, handler); while (running) ; printf("Bye!\n"); return 0; } This program is incorrect because the handler interrupts the program flow, so running can be modified at any time and should therefore be declared volatile. But let's say the programmer forgot that. gcc 4.3.3, with the -O3 flag, compiles the loop body (after one initial check of the running flag) down to the infinite loop .L7: jmp .L7 which was to be expected. Now we put something trivial inside the while loop, like: while (running) putchar('.'); And suddenly, gcc does not optimize the loop condition anymore! The loop body's assembly now looks like this (again at -O3): .L7: movq stdout(%rip), %rsi movl $46, %edi call _IO_putc movl running(%rip), %eax testl %eax, %eax jne .L7 We see that running is re-loaded from memory each time through the loop; it is not even cached in a register. Apparently gcc now thinks that the value of running could have changed. So why does gcc suddenly decide that it needs to re-check the value of running in this case?

  I would like to know how to force-restart a PC that has crashed/hung and become completely non-responsive, using 2nd-generation vPro technology. Assume there is a second, fully responsive PC on the same LAN that can be accessed remotely to assist. Specifically, I am considering purchasing a PC with an i7-2860QM CPU, which is vPro-enabled (according to Intel). • Which hosts have low latency across United States and Europe?

  I'm looking for some information on web hosts that have low latency (<100ms) to both the United States and Europe. The host can be in either the United States or Europe. Latency is most important to the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. Should be able to provide managed hosting. Hosting at multiple locations is not what I'm looking for. Answers should contain at least some latency information from multiple locations, preferably from Los Angeles, New York, London, Amsterdam and Oslo. Also some information on your experience with this host is preferred, do not rant, do provide details of your package (with or without SLA, dedicated or VPS etc.). From my own little research I found that probably New York based hosts can offer low latency to all these locations, but I do not have much statistics to back that up other than my own ping is about 85ms to New York from the Netherlands.
