  • What is a practical use for a closure in JavaScript?

    - by alex
I'm trying my hardest to wrap my head around JavaScript's closures. I get that by returning an inner function, it will have access to any variable defined in it's immediate parent. Where would this be useful to me? Perhaps I haven't quite got my head around it yet. Most of the examples I have seen online don't provide any real world code, just vague examples. Can someone show me a real world use of a closure? Is this one, for example? var warnUser = function (msg) { var calledCount = 0; return function() { calledCount++; alert(msg + '\nYou have been warned ' + calledCount + ' times.'); }; }; var warnForTamper = warnUser('You can not tamper with our HTML.'); warnForTamper(); warnForTamper(); Thanks

  • Dump to CSV/Postgres memory

    - by alex
I have a large table (300 million lines) that I would like to dump to a csv - I need to do some processing that cannot be done with SQL. Right now I am using Squirrel as a client, and it does not apparently deal very well with large datasets - at least as far as I can tell from my own (limited) experience. If I run the query on the actual host, will it use less memory? Thanks for any help.

  • Visual Studio: Collapse Methods, but not Comments (Summary etc.)

    - by Alex
Hello, is there a way (settings? "macro"? extension?) that I can simply toggle outlining so that only the using section and my methods collapse to their signature line, but my comments (summary and double slash comments) and classes stay expanded? Examples: 1) Uncollapsed using System; using MachineGun; namespace Animals { /// <summary> /// Angry animal /// Pretty Fast, too /// </summary> public partial class Lion { // // Dead or Alive public Boolean Alive; /// <summary> /// Bad bite /// </summary> public PieceOfAnimal Bite(Animal animalToBite) { return animalToBite.Shoulder; } /// <summary> /// Fatal bite /// </summary> public PieceOfAnimal Kill(Animal animalToKill) { return animalToKill.Head; } } } 2) Collapsed (the following is my desired result): using[...] namespace Animals { /// <summary> /// Angry animal /// Pretty Fast, too /// </summary> public partial class Lion { // // Dead or Alive public Boolean Alive; /// <summary> /// Bad bite /// </summary> public PieceOfAnimal Bite(Animal animalToBite)[...] /// <summary> /// Fatal bite /// </summary> public PieceOfAnimal Kill(Animal animalToKill)[...] } } This is how I prefer seeing my class files (the collapsed form). I've been doing the collapsing by hand a million times by now and I think there should be a way to automate/customize/extend VS to do it the way I want? Every time I debug/hit a breakpoint, it uncollapses and messes up things. If I collapse via the context menu's collapse to outline etc. it also collapses my comments which isn't desired. Appreciate your help!

  • How to implement a collection (list, map?) of complicated strings in Java?

    - by Alex Cheng
    Hi all. I'm new here. Problem -- I have something like the following entries, 1000 of them: args1=msg args2=flow args3=content args4=depth args6=within ==> args5=content args1=msg args2=flow args3=content args4=depth args6=within args7=distance ==> args5=content args1=msg args2=flow args3=content args6=within ==> args5=content args1=msg args2=flow args3=content args6=within args7=distance ==> args5=content args1=msg args2=flow args3=flow ==> args4=flowbits args1=msg args2=flow args3=flow args5=content ==> args4=flowbits args1=msg args2=flow args3=flow args6=depth ==> args4=flowbits args1=msg args2=flow args3=flow args6=depth ==> args5=content args1=msg args2=flow args4=depth ==> args3=content args1=msg args2=flow args4=depth args5=content ==> args3=content args1=msg args2=flow args4=depth args5=content args6=within ==> args3=content args1=msg args2=flow args4=depth args5=content args6=within args7=distance ==> args3=content I'm doing some sort of suggestion method. Say, args1=msg args2=flow args3=flow == args4=flowbits If the sentence contains msg, flow, and another flow, then I should return the suggestion of flowbits. How can I go around doing it? I know I should scan (whenever a character is pressed on the textarea) a list or array for a match and return the result, but, 1000 entries, how should I implement it? I'm thinking of HashMap, but can I do something like this? <"msg,flow,flow","flowbits" Also, in a sentence the arguments might not be in order, so assuming that it's flow,flow,msg then I can't match anything in the HashMap as the key is "msg,flow,flow". What should I do in this case? Please help. Thanks a million!

  • CSS with Aligned LI within a UL

    - by Alex
    I am trying to have some LIs within a UL align left, right, and center within a page. For the life of me, I can't figure out how to keep something "centered" on the same line as a left and right aligned LI. <style> ul { margin:1em 0; padding:0 } ul li{ display:inline-block; white-space:nowrap; margin:5px } ul li.left{ float: left; text-align:left; } ul li.center{ float:left; text-align: center; } ul li.right{ float: right; text-align:right; } </style> <ul> <li class="left">left</li> <li class="center">center</li> <li class="right">right</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="left">left</li> <li class="right">right</li> </ul> <ul> <li class="left">left</li> </ul> Can anyone help? BTW, I've trying to avoid DIVs. Thanks!

  • How to set the URL of a link to a variable using WATIR

    - by Alex
Using WATIR and Excel, I'd like to take the first row of a table in Excel, visit the URL, then set the 12th link on the page as a variable in the cell next to the cell with the URL, then go to the next line and repeat. I'm stuck on getting the URL of the 12th link on the page to set as a variable that I can feed into the next cell in Excel. Here's what I have and it's not working. worksheet = workbook.WorkSheets(1) # get first workbook #declare test site test_site = worksheet.Range("a2").text #open ie ie = Watir::IE.new #go to test_site ie.goto test_site #find primlink ie.link(:index, 12).text = "primlink" puts primlink Any ideas?

  • Javascript code in ASP.NET MVC Partial Views (ASCX) or not?

    - by Alex
Is there a "best practice" for placing Javascript code when you have many partial views and JS code that's specific to them? I feel like I'm creating a maintenance nightmare by having many partial views and then a bunch of independent Javascript files for them which need to be synced up when there is a partial view change. It appears, for maintenance purposes, better to me to put the JS code with the partial view. But then I'm violating generally accepted practices that all JS code should be at the bottom of the page and not mixed in, and also I'd end up with multiple references to the same JS file (as I'd include a reference in each ASCX for intellisense purposes). Does anyone have a better idea? Thank you!

  • How do I make IntelliJ recognize wicket html tags?

    - by Alex B
I'm using IntellIJ with Apache Wicket and IntelliJ is showing me that tags like <wicket:extend> and <wicket:container> and adding wicket:id to other html tags is not valid. What steps do I need to take to make IntelliJ recognize the wicket tags? I'm using IntelliJ Ultimate 9 with the wicketforge plugin.

  • Why does it not allowed to use try-catch statement without {} ?

    - by alex
Why can't I use code like this ? 1 int i = 0; try i = int.Parse("qwerty"); catch throw; 2 try i = int.Parse("qwerty"); catch; finally Log.Write("error"); And should write like this 1 int i = 0; try { i = int.Parse("qwerty"); } catch { throw; } 2 try { i = int.Parse("qwerty");} catch {} finally {Log.Write("error");} PS: I can use if-else statement without {}. Why should I use them with try-catch(-finally) statement ? Is there any meaningful reason ? Is it only because that some people think that code is hard to read ? Several months ago I asked that question on russian programming forum but I got no satisfactory answer ...

  • How to backup data stored with Core Data - iPhone app?

    - by Alex
I'm using sqlite for the persistent store, so could I just upload the .sqlite file to, for example, Amazon S3 as a way of providing users with the ability to backup their app data? Then for restoring just download it back and replace the existing .sqlite file in the app's folder. Does anybody see any issues with that? Has anyone done it? Any other suggestions on how to implement data backup feature?

  • Tracking down slow managed DLL loading

    - by Alex K
I am faced with the following issue and at this point I feel like I'm severely lacking some sort of tool, I just don't know what that tool is, or what exactly it should be doing. Here is the setup: I have a 3rd party DLL that has to be registered in GAC. This all works fine and good on pretty much every machine our software was deployed on before. But now we got 2 machines, seemingly identical to the ones we know work (they are cloned from the same image and stuffed with the same hardware, so pretty much the only difference is software settings, over which I went over and over, and they seem fine). Now the problem, the DLL in GAC takes a very long time to load. At least I believe this is the issue, what I can say definitively is that instantiating a single class from that DLL is the slow part. Once it is loaded, thing fly as they always have. But while on known-good machines the DLL loads so fast that a timestamp in the log doesn't even change, on these 2 machines it take over 1min to load. Knowns: I have no access to the source, so I can't debug through the DLL. Our app is the only one that uses it (so shouldn't be simultaneous access issues). There is only one version of this DLL in existance, so it shouldn't be a matter of version conflict. The GAC reference is being used (if I uninstall the DLL from GAC, an exception will be thrown about the missing GAC reference). Could someone with a greater skill in debug-fu suggest what I can do to track down the root cause of this issue?

  • How do I make my custom Swing component visible?

    - by Alex
I have no idea why it won't show. First I create an instance of the component and then add it to a certain element in a two-dimensional JPanel array. Then I loop through that array and add each JPanel to another JPanel container which is to hold all the JPanels. I then add that final container to my JFrame window and set visibility to true, it should be visible? public class View extends JFrame { Board gameBoard; JFrame gameWindow = new JFrame("Chess"); JPanel gamePanel = new JPanel(); JPanel[][] squarePanel = new JPanel[8][8]; JMenuBar gameMenu = new JMenuBar(); JButton restartGame = new JButton("Restart"); JButton pauseGame = new JButton("Pause"); JButton log = new JButton("Log"); View(Board board){ gameWindow.setDefaultCloseOperation(EXIT_ON_CLOSE); gameWindow.setSize(400, 420); gameWindow.getContentPane().add(gamePanel, BorderLayout.CENTER); gameWindow.getContentPane().add(gameMenu, BorderLayout.NORTH); gameMenu.add(restartGame); gameMenu.add(pauseGame); gameMenu.add(log); gameBoard = board; drawBoard(gameBoard); gameWindow.setResizable(false); gameWindow.setVisible(true); } public void drawBoard(Board board){ for(int row = 0; row < 8; row++){ for(int col = 0; col < 8; col++){ Box box = new Box(board.getSquare(col, row).getColour(), col, row); squarePanel[col][row] = new JPanel(); squarePanel[col][row].add(box); } } for(JPanel[] col : squarePanel){ for(JPanel square : col){ gamePanel.add(square); } } } } @SuppressWarnings("serial") class Box extends JComponent{ Color boxColour; int col, row; public Box(Color boxColour, int col, int row){ this.boxColour = boxColour; this.col = col; this.row = row; repaint(); } protected void paintComponent(Graphics drawBox){ drawBox.setColor(boxColour); drawBox.drawRect(50*col, 50*row, 50, 50); drawBox.fillRect(50*col, 50*row, 50, 50); } } A final question as well. Notice how each Box component has a position, what happens to the position when I add the component to a JPanel and add the JPanel to my JFrame? Does it still have the same position in relation to the other Box components?

  • LinkButton child controls render

    - by Alex
Hi. I want to have a LinkButton that adds 'span' tag around the text. protected override void Render(HtmlTextWriter writer) { Text = String.Concat("<span>", Text, "</span>"); base.Render(writer); } It's works perfectly, but only if I add text like this: <cc:TestLinkButton ID="TestLinkButton" runat="server" Text="SomeText"> </cc:TestLinkButton> If I want to add some image I will write something like this: <cc:TestLinkButton ID="LinkButton1" runat="server"> <asp:Image ID="Image1" runat="server" ImageUrl="~/Images/icon_holiday.png" BorderWidth="0" /> SomeText </cc:TestLinkButton> In this case Text property will be empty, because actualy "SomeText" is child control property. So question is is how to add tag around child controls.

  • Can I get a "base URL" in Wordpress within a template file?

    - by alex
Usually in my PHP apps I have a base URL setup so I can do things like this <a href="<?php echo BASE_URL; ?>tom/jones">Tom</a> Then I can move my site from development to production and swap it easily and have the change go site wide (and it seems more reliable than <base href="" />. I'm doing up a Wordpress theme, and I am wondering, does WordPress have anything like this built in, or do I need to redefine my own? I can see ABSPATH, but that is the absolute file path in the file system, not something from the document root.

  • Memory leak till crash due to HttpRequest

    - by Alex R.
I played with HttpRequest and realized that the memory is not cleaned up after any request. After some time the running tab within Chrome will crash. Here is some testing code. Put a large sized file into the 'www' directory and set the URL in the code accordingly. import 'dart:async'; import 'dart:html'; void main() { const PATH = "http://127.0.0.1:3030/PATH_TO_FILE"; new Timer.periodic(new Duration(seconds:10), (Timer it)=>getString(PATH)); } void getString( String url){ HttpRequest.getString(url).then((String data){ }); } Is this really a bug or did I something wrong?

  • How to perform an external request in Kohana 3?

    - by alex
I've always used cURL for this sort of stuff, but this article got me thinking I could request another page easily using the Request object in Kohana 3. $url = 'http://www.example.com'; $update = Request::factory($url); $update->method = 'POST'; $update->post = array( 'key' => 'value' ); $update->execute(); echo $update->response; However I get the error Accessing static property Request::$method as non static From this I can assume it means that the method method is static, but that doesn't help me much. I also copied and pasted the example from that article and it threw the same error. Basically, I'm trying to POST to a new page on an external server, and do it the Kohana way. So, am I doing this correctly, or should I just use cURL (or file_get_contents() with context)?
