• How can a 1Gb Java heap on a 64bit machine use 3Gb of VIRT space?

  I run the same process on a 32bit machine as on a 64bit machine with the same memory VM settings (-Xms1024m -Xmx1024m) and similar VM version (1.6.0_05 vs 1.6.0_16). However the virtual space used by the 64bit machine (as shown in top under "VIRT") is almost three times as big as that in 32bit! I know 64bit VMs will use a little more memory for the larger references, but how can it be three times as big? Am I reading VIRT in top incorrectly? Full data shown below, showing top and then the result of jmap -heap, first for 64bit, then for 32bit. • why custom state won't work with compound drawable?

  Hello I am trying to make a password registration widget that will show a little checkbox in the textbox when both password boxes match. I decided to go about this by extending EditText to implement a valid and an empty state and then just use a state-list drawable to handle everything else. I followed the same method that the CompoundButton uses to add a custom state and everything seems to be right but the image will never change no matter what the state is (custom state or even state_focused etc) Is there some reason that the compound drawables of a TextView wouldn't work as a state-list drawable? Or, am I doing something wrong?   I created several simple ggplot2 plots and saved them to PDF files using the following commands: p <- ggplot(plotobject, aes(x=Pos, y=Pval),res=300) ggsave(plot=p,height=6,width=6,dpi=200, filename="~/example.pdf") If I now open this example.pdf in Adobe Illustrator I get the following error: The font AdobePiStd is missing. Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font. Is there a way in ggplot2 to specify a font (I presume this is for the dots/points) that Adobe will understand or otherwise is there a way to get this font working in Adobe?

  I have a web-app that requires two settings: A JDBC datasource A string token I desperately want to be able to deploy one .war to various different containers (jetty,tomcat,gf3 minimum) and configure these settings at application level within the container. My code does this: InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext(); Context envCtx = (javax.naming.Context) ctx.lookup("java:comp/env"); token = (String)envCtx.lookup("token"); ds = (DataSource)envCtx.lookup("jdbc/datasource") Let's assume I've used the glassfish management interface to create two jdbc resources: jdbc/test-datasource and jdbc/live-datasource which connect to different copies of the same schema, on different servers, different credentials etc. Say I want to deploy this to glassfish with and point it at the test datasource, I might have this in my sun-web.xml: ... <resource-ref> <res-ref-name>jdbc/datasource</res-ref-name> <jndi-name>jdbc/test-datasource</jndi-name> </resource-ref> ... but sun-web.xml goes inside my war, right? surely there must be a way to do this through the management interface Am I even trying to do the right thing? Do other containers make this any easier? I'd be particularly interested in how jetty 7 handles this since I use it for development. But when the file has a space (like 'sachin knock.flv') or files which have quotes (like sachin's_double_cent.mp4) it doesn't work.. What can i do to get those files work accurately?   I am taking my first faltering steps with CUDA Toolkit 5.0 RC using VS2010. Separate compilation has me confused. I tried to set up a project as a Static Library (.lib), but when I try to build it, it does not create a device-link.obj and I don't understand why. For instance, there are 2 files: A caller function that uses a function f #include "thrust\host_vector.h" #include "thrust\device_vector.h" using namespace thrust::placeholders; extern __device__ double f(double x); struct f_func { __device__ double operator()(const double& x) const { return f(x); } }; void test(const int len, double * data, double * res) { thrust::device_vector<double> d_data(data, data + len); thrust::transform(d_data.begin(), d_data.end(), d_data.begin(), f_func()); thrust::copy(d_data.begin(),d_data.end(), res); } And a library file that defines f __device__ double f(double x) { return x+2.0; } If I set the option generate relocatable device code to No, the first file will not compile due to unresolved extern function f. If I set it to -rdc, it will compile, but does not produce a device-link.obj file and so the linker fails. If I put the definition of f into the first file and delete the second it builds successfully, but now it isn't separate compilation anymore. How can I build a static library like this with separate source files? [Updated here] I called the first caller file "caller.cu" and the second "libfn.cu". So I thought I try my luck with a calculator app. Unfortunately I am running into an issue where if I press a third key in the calculator the app crashes. Sometimes I get this error EXC_BAD_ACCESS. • Trappings MySQL Warnings on Calls Wrapped in Classes -- Python

  I can't get Python's try/else blocks to catch MySQL warnings when the execution statements are wrapped in classes. I have a class that has as a MySQL connection object as an attribute, a MySQL cursor object as another, and a method that run queries through that cursor object. The cursor is itself wrapped in a class. These seem to run queries properly, but the MySQL warnings they generate are not caught as exceptions in a try/else block. Why don't the try/else blocks catch the warnings? How would I revise the classes or method calls to catch the warnings? Also, I've looked through the prominent sources and can't find a discussion that helps me understand this. I'd appreciate any reference that explains this. Please see code below.
