• Is there a factory pattern to prevent multiple instances for same object (instance that is Equal) good design?

  I have a number of objects storing state. There are essentially two types of fields. The ones that uniquely define what the object is (what node, what edge etc), and the others that store state describing how these things are connected (this node is connected to these edges, this edge is part of these paths) etc. My model is updating the state variables using package methods, so all these objects act as immutable to anyone not in Model scope. All Objects extend one base type. I've toyed with the idea of a Factory approach which accepts a Builder object and constructs the applicable object. However, if an instance of the object already exists (ie would return true if I created the object defined by the builder and passed it to the equal method for the existing instance) the factory returns the current object instead of creating a new instance. Because the Equal method would only compare what uniquely defines the type of object (this is node A to node B) but won't check the dynamic state stuff (node A is currently connected to nodes C and E) this would be a way of ensuring anyone that wants my Node A automatically knows its state connections. More importantly it would prevent aliasing nightmares of someone trying to pass an instance of node A with different state then the node A in my model has. I've never heard of this pattern before, and it's a bit odd. I would have to do some overriding of serialization methods to make it work (ensure that when I read in a serilized object I add it to my facotry list of known instances, and/or return an existing factory in its place), as well as using a weakHashMap as if it was a weakHashSet to know whether an instance exists without worrying about a quasi-memory leak occuring. I don't know if this is too confusing or prone to its own obscure bugs. One thing I know is that plugins interface with lowest level hardware. The plugins have to be able to return state that is different than my memory; to tell my memory when its own state is inconsistent. I believe this is possible despite their fetching objects that exist in my memory; we allow building of objects without checking their consistency with the model until the addToModel is called anyways; and the existing plugins design was written before all this extra state existed and worked fine without ever being aware of it. Should I just be using some other design to avoid this crazyness? (I have another question to that affect that I'm posting).

• AWStats consumes too much resource, how to disable temporarily

  For some days AWStats takes %10-%20 of my CPU, takes 400-550 MB RAM and works for hours. Maybe my site's traffic became larger so process time takes more time than before or some bugs in program makes this. Anyway I want to disable AWStats temporarily. Maybe I would want to activate it in future. I found that answer. But it gives commands to remove AWStats. I only want to disable it temporarily. My system is Centos 6.3, Plesk 11.5.30 Update #19. I tried to disable cron jobs. I run this # killall awstats.pl I opened # vi /etc/cron.daily/awstats file and I changed it to this: #!/bin/sh #/usr/share/awstats/awstats_updateall.pl now -awstatsprog=/var/www/cgi-bin/awstats/awstats.pl -configdir=/etc/awstats >/dev/null 2>&1 exit 0 After some time I still see that awstats is running. What should I do more to not to awstats run again ? But without removing my files. After changing " /etc/cron.daily/awstats" file awstats doesn't start in daytime. But every night in 03:15 awstats starts again. Because of Plesk auto updates are working at that time, I changed from Plesk. Don't auto update automatically. But it seems like last night at 03:15 awstats started again. Is there any way to stop awstats temporarily except this solution ? Because this solution deletes awstats configs permanently and I don't know how to revert it back in future ? • mysqld crashes on any statement

  I restarted my slave to change configuration settings to skip reverse hostname lookup on connecting and to enable the slow query log. I edited /etc/my.cnf making only these changes, then restarted mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysql restart All appeared to be well but when I connect to msyqld remotely or locally though it connects okay a slight problem is that mysqld crashes whenever you try to issue any kind of statement.   hi i am looking for a recap of what i have done already to see if i missed anything. i had two cities connected by wan using a ipsec persistent tunnel between gateways. i had one DC (DOMAIN CONTROLLER) in each city that was a global catalog server (GC) they were set up to replicate and i had them configured under Sites and Servers with their own subnet etc... about 6 months ago the one city was removed and i was not able to gracefully remove, through dcpromo, the server that was there. it is no longer used and cannot be brought back. the company went from two sites down to single site. Problem is i had a whole bunch of kcc errors and replication bugs in the event viewer. i wanted to clean up my active directory and decided to use the ntdsutil metadata cleanup commands. i removed the server from the specifed site based on a procedure from petri website. I then removed the instances of the old DC and site from Sites and Servers. Then i went and cleaned up the DNS by removing Host A records, NS server name from both the local DNS forward lookup zone and the _msdcs i also removed the reverse lookup zone for the subnet that no longer exists. is there anything i missed? thanks in advance for any help. gd

• How do I install OpenStack on a single Ubuntu 12.04 node?

  I'm having trouble installing OpenStack in Ubuntu 12.04, for various reasons: The official Ubuntu website recommends Juju and MAAS. However, this is a single node I am trying to get OpenStack installed on, and MAAS requires "two or more nodes" according to the docs. Additionally, I don't have any experience in MAAS and Juju and would rather stick to technologies I am more familiar with so that I can debug problems that arise. I have tried StackGeek but this fails because the node only has a single Ethernet port. The node does, however, have the second hard drive required for the nova storage. I have tried DevStack but cannot log into the dashboard. The login form appears fine, but as soon as I try to submit the page, my browser begins loading indefinitely. I have tried installing straight from packages, but I get an Internal Server Error in the dashboard upon trying to log in, with no helpful logs anywhere in sight to aid me in debugging the issue. Each of these attempts was with a fresh Ubuntu 12.04 LTS setup; I'm finding it really strange that no matter what I try, I cannot get OpenStack installed. Is this even a stable/mature project? Why am I encountering so many bugs?

  I am in the process of setting up Lion Servers profile manager to manage iPads on our local school network. I don't need to manage them while they are outside the network. I have successfully had it working on my personal network. The school network is behind a proxy which we have no control over. I can get the iPads to view the mydevices page and install a trust cert. I have managed to get an iPad to successfully install the remote management profile. After this the profile manager bugs out. It will list the active task of 'new device (sending)' but it's unable to complete the task. If I click on the device on profile manager and try any of the actions out they will all fail to complete. I am using the auto generated certificates and this works if I bring the server and iPad outside of the school network.   Hi all, I currently own a 06' Macbook pro 1.1, and since some months I have recurrent problems of displays bug or artifacts. I searched quickly around to see that a lot of other users on Mac (iMac or Macbook pro) also have the same problem due to a problem for the X1600 video card. Apparently it's due to overheating problem, in my case even without warming a lot I have very bad display bugs such as colorful pixel lines, or glitches, and freeze and crash, all of this on Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard. I found this interesting article here talking about this problem and trying to gather people so that Apple take the serious GPU problem in consideration. In one of the comments, an user said he removed all bundle named with "radeon" and then he had no more problems under Leopard, and seems ot work fine well too on Snow Leopard. I did the same thing, I removed the bundles of the driver, restart, and no more problems, but not more 3D acceleration, which is not an acceptable solution.   I'm using nginx as a frontend to Rails. All pages are cached as .html files on disk, and nginx serves these files if they exist. I want to send the correct MIME type for feeds (application/rss+xml), but the way I have so far is quite ugly, and I'm wondering if there is a cleaner way. But I have to know if it's not caused by something else than dying hard drive. This is server provided by my client and I am just runing there some node.js workers + one node.js server and I am using mongodb.   I just installed Fedora 17. I'm setting up the Android Build Environment and need Java. I downloaded and installed jdk-6u32-linux-amd64.rpm I ran java -version and it spit out the correct version. Well a day or two later i tried my first compile in Fedora 17 and it complained about java and failed. I ran java -version again and low and behold it spits out $ java -version java version "1.7.0_03-icedtea" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (fedora-2.1.fc17.7-x86_64) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 22.0-b10, mixed mode) I'm stumped. I mean, i've run the update/upgrade commands since i installed but i didn't think that updated full version revisions... So, I ran alternatives --config java and that only gave me the java 1.7 version. While digging around more I discovered that the recommended version of Java for the build environment is jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin so I downloaded that from here: Oracle Download When I ran: sudo sh jdk-6u27-linux-x64-rpm.bin it returned: Unpacking... I am working on installing my development environment and tools and one of the first things I was working on is getting MySQL installed. • Calendar sharing between unrelated Domains

  I have a 'request' from one of the 'big guys' that has me scratching my head a bit. He is one of our Executives that also is a board member of several other organistations, so he floats around between 4 different unrelated companies, each with their own domains, Exchange setup etc. He has domain accounts in each organisation. He has an iPad with multiple Exchange accounts so he can see all his calendars which works Ok for him - Apple calendaring bugs/flaws aside. What he wants is the ability for 'reception staff' at each organisation to 'see' all his calendars as they are booking things for him in their respective organisations calendars without it conflicting with bookings made in his calendars by other organisations......you with me?? So for example: Company A books a meeting into his Comapny A calendar at 9am Monday and Company B books him a meeting in his Company B Calendar at 9:15am Monday on the other side of town and of course Company C has him booked in all day Monday on their Company C calendar. He gets all those on his iPad but he would like either a 'global' calendar all can see and book into or the ability for receptionists at Company's A,B and C to see all the Calendars to avoid these kind of conflicts. I told him to 'go away' straight off the bat, I don't control anything to do with the other companies or know their infrastructure. And quite frankly I don't want any part of it...but he's whining and he's high enough up the food chain that I can't ignore him forever. I'm open to suggestions. Is there any third party software/services that can facilitiate this kind of setup? I really don't want to be creating users in my AD structure to people not ion our organisation so they can get access to his calendar and I am sure there sysadmins feel the same. As usual - any advice is greatly appreciated ;)

• Strange ASP.NET Queue Performance Counters Behavior?

  We have an ASP.NET 2.0 site running in classic mode. I am seeing very strange behavior in the performance counter values. Perhaps these are bugs (I've been all over Google trying to verify this, without much luck), or perhaps it is just my inexperience with monitoring these things. This PerfMon graph (http://imgur.com/Jv5io5J) represents a load test where I add up to 350 virtual users to the site, at a rate of about 1/sec, performing relatively simple page browsing. At the end of the test, I gradually taper off the number of users. This is a 4 CPU server. Machine.config settings for are at the defaults. The solid blue line is ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Executing for the application in question. The profile makes perfect sense, with a quick ramp-up to 32 executing requests (minWorkerThreads x 4CPUs), followed by a slower ramp-up to 48 ((maxWorkerThreads - minWorkerThreads) x 4CPUs). The solid yellow line is ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued. Again, this makes sense: after the initial 32 request threads are activated, the queue begins to build as new thread initialization can't keep pace with incoming requests. But as executing requests reaches its highest possible value of 48, the counter for ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Requests Queued (green solid line) suddenly springs to life and maintains step with the yellow counter. As far as I can tell, and with no other apps running on the server, these two counters should have had the same values from the start. One other odd thing: The counter for ASP.NET v2.x\Request Wait Time (dotted yellow line) also does not spring to life until executing requests reaches 48. Shouldn't I be seeing values here from the moment ASP.NET v2.x\Requests Queued begins to build? And likewise, why would ASP.NET Apps v2.x\Request Execution Time (dotted blue) increase significantly only after that peak of 48 is reached? Shouldn't it ramp-up gradually along with queued requests?

• Where to get working Sysinternals tools for Windows 2000?

  Yes, I know Windows 2000 will run end-of-life in this year, but we still have a lot of Windows 2000 boxes we try to migrate but no idea if all of them can be migrated this year... Recently I downloaded a new Sysinternals Suite (most recent file date 2010-03-25) and noticed that some tools just do not work on Windows 2000 any longer, which makes troubleshooting a lot harder. I checked all the tools in the suite to check which tools do not work, and dug through to find older versions that do work, but I don't know if there are more recent ones (with fewer bugs) available. I did not find any way to download old versions from Sysinternals website. :-( So here is my list: Does not work Works ADExplorer.exe 1.30.0.0 ? Coreinfo.exe 2.00 ? disk2vhd.exe 1.5.0.0 ? livekd.exe 3.14 3.0 procdump.exe 1.72 ? • Suggestions for Windows 8 migration [closed]

  I'm thinking of migrating to Windows 8. At first I hated it, but I'm pretty sure the Windows 8 model is the future, and I don't particularly want to end up hating the future like my parents, frustrated and bewildered by anything past Windows XP. I'm currently running Windows 7 and my system has been accumulating some problems. It's probably an accumulation of issues from installing too much software, changing firewall settings, installing Ubuntu alongside Windows, and... well I'm not sure, but my computer has been buggy in unexpected ways lately (freezing and unfreezing, display driver crashing and recovering, and what I call "deep freeze/thaw cycle" where the mouse won't even move for a while). I'm good at solving computer problems, but I can't seem to get to the root of these and my best idea for fixing them is making sure I've backed up every file then re-installing the entire OS. Luckily for me, a new OS is just around the corner so this would be a good time to get two things out of the way at once. The problem I see is that the upgrade options I see are all "seamless". I don't want a seamless upgrade. I want to wipe the slate clean and start all over. Does this mean I will have to buy a full, new copy of Windows 8 rather than one of the cheaper upgrading options? Or does it not make since for me to go to Windows 8 given that I have a laptop, not a tablet? Maybe I should just re-install Windows 7, or even call good enough good enough, try to eliminate the bugs, and start with a fresh slate in 2-3 years after this computer eventually dies entirely from (inevitable) hardware failure. What would be the advantages or disadvantages and costs of each option, how would I go about upgrading to Windows 8 if that's the option I choose, and what is your personal opinion about my situation?

Here are a few points to check: In config.inc.php, try to leave the $cfg['PmaAbsoluteUri'] directive empty. See also FAQ 4.7. Maybe you have a broken PHP installation or you need to upgrade your Zend Optimizer. See http://bugs.php.net/bug.php?id=31134. If you are using Hardened PHP with the ini directive varfilter.max_request_variables set to the default (200) or another low value, you could get this error if your table has a high number of columns. Adjust this setting accordingly. (Thanks to Klaus Dorninger for the hint). In the php.ini directive arg_separator.input, a value of ";" will cause this error. Replace it with "&;". If you are using Hardened-PHP, you might want to increase request limits. The directory specified in the php.ini directive session.save_path does not exist or is read-only. I did tried with php.ini to make sure that I've session.save_path = "/tmp" I'm using Mac Xserver and running with MAMP I did tried everything to restart my server and nothing help. • Malware Defense Shows Up in PlayOn Settings/Logs Although System Has Been Thoroughly Cleaned

  I was hit really hard by some nasty malware: Malware Defense. I was doing something I should not have been doing when I got it (surfing Pirate Bay for TV shows). It locked up my system and I had to reboot in safe mode. I was able to shut down the process and remove it using a malware killer tool. I then installed, after my machine was cleaned up a bit, Clamwin, Malwarebytes, and another AV tool. I cleaned the heck out of my system. Simultaneously, while this was going on, I was having trouble with my media-server, PlayOn. This tool is great, but has some bugs. One in particular is that it will not function well with AV software running. I found a way to allow the new AV software to run while using PlayOn, but it still says I have Malware Defense on. Firstly, Malware Defense is long gone. I cleaned all remnants from my registry and scoured my system with the above tools multiple times. PlayOn is getting some information that I have this crap installed on my system, but it's not. The system runs OK, but not optimally. I have a feeling it is causing my streaming to be interrupted sometimes. How is it that I can't even find Malware Defense on my system if I tried but yet somehow PlayOn is getting a finger print of it somewhere? I have gone back and forth with MediaMall to no avail. I kind of just gave up, because the streaming works OK. BTW, I also uninstalled/reinstalled PlayOn several times, reverted back to previous versions, etc. The only thing I haven't done is reformat my disk and reinstall Windows. I really don't want to do this if there is another way to remove this little print. Any ideas?

• Remove server hangs, gets stuck. How to debug?

  I have an vps running on VmWare ESX with Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. It has been running smoothly for the past 3 months, however recently we've notices two strange bugs. a. The server hangs, today was second time. The nature of the hang is very strange. I can ping to the server server, it sends back response fine. However all other services like sshd, apache, mysql etc do not respond at all. When working, telnet servername 22 Escape character is '^]'. SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.X Debian-5ubuntu1 And other web services would run fine. When its hung, I can make tcp connections to 22 as well as 80 but receive no response at all. telnet servername 22 Escape character is '^]'. How can I debug this problem? Is there any daemons I can run that will periodically log status? Please tell me as to how to proceed with it. b. The another strange problem is that, of lately I am unable to transfer files larger than around 100KB, smaller files of around 1-2 KB works file. scp anotherserver:filename . or wget http://www.example.com/file would get stuck. There is still around 6GB of space remaining, so I don't think that is an issue. Any pointers where I should look into?

• Sandra reports my CPU as "Engineering Sample", how can I be sure this is correct?

  I ran SiSoftware's Sandra on my new PC, and for my CPU it reports: Generation : G8 / T29 Name : TN0 (Trinity) FX/Opteron 32nm (ES) Revision/Stepping : 0 : 10 / 1 Stepping Mask : TN-A1 Microcode : MU6F10010F The (ES) is a well-known code in product development, meaning "Engineering Sample". Those are beta versions of the CPU, which still may contain some bugs, or even have features switches off. I contacted both the PC's manufacturer Medion as well as AMD about this. I had to downvote the Medion helpdesk here. The person I talked to boldly said Sandra was wrong (without knowing how Sandra got this information; he didn't even know the software), and used the word "impossible". His conclusion was "We’re not taking this in consideration for service”. Right. So, if you like Medion for their good prices, but like good support even better, you may consider buying your PC elsewhere. AMD was more helpful, but wanted to be sure before replacing the part (which I find reasonable). They suggested that I dismount the cooler from the CPU to check what was printed on it to be sure. I'm a bit reluctant here: I would have to wipe the thermal paste from the CPU, and won't know for sure my cooling will still be OK afterwards. Questions Has anybody actually found a confirmed ES CPU in her PC? Is anybody aware of Sandra erroneously reporting CPUs as Engineering Samples? How can you tell an ES, apart from the print on the package? Shouldn't Stepping Mask identify the CPU uniquely?

It is set to 1024, but you have descriptors numbered at least as high as 1024. --enable-fd-setsize=2048 is recommended, but you may want to set it to equal the maximum number of open files supported by your system, in order to avoid seeing this error again at a later date. once in a while in our logs. Anyone knows who to configure the unix server and php correctly to have that working?
