    I do not want NetworkManager to list or manipulate my wireless card. Can I hide its interface from NetworkManager somehow? I have tried adding this in /etc/network/interfaces, iface wlan0 inet static address 192.168.1.101 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 wireless-essid Synaptotagmin pre-up wpa_supplicant -B -i wlan0 -c /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf post-down killall -q wpa_supplicant and this in /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf, [keyfile] unmanaged-devices=/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/net_00_19_e0_57_86_af but NetworkManager Applet still lists and allows me to connect to wireless networks.

    My environment: - 2 PCs, a desktop and a laptop, both on Oneiric - they are connected together by ethernet wire - nfs-common is installed and configured: the desktop is the server - a TV tuner card is installed on the desktop, I can watch the French TNT TV with the software Me-TV It works fine, TV on desktop, and my network too: I share folders thanks to NFS. But I would like more: how can I share my TV tuner card from the desktop and be able to watch TV on the laptop too? If possible I would like a solution that allows me to keep using the software Me-TV, on both PCs. I bet that there is a solution to create a fake TV card on the 2nd PC. Something like ln -s on /dev/dvb/adapter0/.

    I need to code a PHP script that would let me generate a pdf file which displays a member ID card (something like a credit card used to identify oneself) at a certain resolution. Let me explain: I do have the basic blueprint of the card in png file format. The script needs to drop in a member's name and birth day along with a serial. So far, no problem - there are plenty of good working PHP librarys out there. My problem is to ensure that the resulting pdf (the generated image of the card, to be precise) meets a certain resolution (preferably 300dpi), so that printing it would look right. Any ideas?   • Why does installing NVidia 9600GT graphics card, take 1GB of RAM away from Windows?

    Hi, I've changed graphics cards in my PC and now Windows 7 (32bit) is reporting that I have a whole gigabyte less physical RAM in my PC. Why is this? Firstly, the machine has 4GB of physical RAM. The old card was an ATI 2600XT with 256MB and the new card is an NVidia 9600GT with 512MB. With the ATI card windows sees 3326MB. With the NVidia card, windows sees 2558MB. I realise that due to address space restrictions I will not see all 4GB with 32bit windows, but why is there such a massive loss of RAM when simply changing cards (bearing in mind BOTH cards have their own RAM and borrow no main memory like some built on chipsets do). Would using 64 bit windows solve this? Thanks Nick.

  • Gentoo baselayout-2 problem with module parameters

    I recently switched to baselayout-2 on my Gentoo machine but I have one problem. I autoload a module bttv with paramater: card=77,77 The problem is that at boot the module is loaded without the parameter which makes the video feed useless. I cannot find the cause because the funny thing is that when I put an echo in /etc/init.d/modules to see what is passed to modprobe, this is what I got: szymanowicz ~ # /etc/init.d/modules restart * WARNING: you are stopping a boot service * Caching service dependencies ...   • Is Winpcap able to capture all packets going through a Gigabit NIC without missing any packets?

    I want to use Winpcap to capture all network packets going through a Gigabit NIC of a server. Assuming that I am able to utilize the network link up to 100%, the maximum network speed is 1000Mbps. If we exclude the TCP/IP headers, the maximum TCP data rate should be roughly 940Mbps. Let's say I send a 1GB file through the NIC at 940Mbps using TCP destination port 6000. I use Winpcap to capture all network packets going through the NIC and then dump it to a pcap file. If I use Wireshark to analyze the pcap file and then check the sum of packet size for all network packets sent to TCP port 6000, am I able to get exactly 1GB from the pcap file? Thanks.

    I've got a token like such: <delim2=((?{ $MATCH{delim} }))> and what I want to happen is for delim2 to capture and be set to the value of delim. When I run this, delim2 is set, but the capture is never done. I think this is an error in my reasoning: I'm trying to chain this form: <ALIAS= ( PATTERN )> Match pattern, save match in $MATCH{ALIAS} and this form: (?{ MATCH{delim} }) into something like this <ALIAS= ( (?{MATCH{delim}) )> Matches the value of $MATCH{delim} save to $MATCH{delim2} but this simply doesn't seem valid. I can verify my original token works <delim2=((?{ die $MATCH{delim} }))> will die with the value, and, if I hard code it, I get the right capture and everything works <delim2=(')>? So how do I go about achieving sane results, while having a dynamic pattern?

    I currently have some systems that multiple people have access to for administration purposes. We've modified the history log so that we capture 2k lines of history per user to help aid in who has done what on the system. However, we would additionally like to capture all keyboard input when we (the administrators) log in, and log it to a file so we can see what changes were made to files once people go into vi to edit them. It will also aid us in documenting when we are going through a compile of software and the like. How can I do this? CentOS 5.4 if it makes a difference.

  • Using Event Driven Programming in games, when is it beneficial?

    I am learning ActionScript 3 and I see the Event flow adheres to the W3C recommendations. From what I learned events can only be captured by the dispatcher unless, the listener capturing the event is a DisplayObject on stage and a parent of the object firing the event. You can capture the events in the capture(before) or bubbling(after) phase depending on Listner and Event setup you use. Does this system lend itself well for game programming? When is this system useful? Could you give an example of a case where using events is a lot better than going without them? Are they somehow better for performance in games? Please do not mention events you must use to get a game running, like Event.ENTER_FRAME Or events that are required to get input from the user like, KeyboardEvent.KEY_DOWN and MouseEvent.CLICK. I am asking if there is any use in firing events that have nothing to do with user input, frame rendering and the likes(that are necessary). I am referring to cases where objects are communicating. Is this used to avoid storing a collection of objects that are on the stage?   • Recommend a basic 3D graphics card for HP ProLiant DL360 G5?

    We've got an HP ProLiant DL360 G5 running Windows Server 2008 R2 that needs a graphics card with 3D acceleration (the integrated ATI ES1000 graphics don't have this). This is an unfortunate requirement that we can't avoid, as it is required by S/W installed on the server that is beyond our control. Looks like the PCI-Express slots in the box are x8 (1 full and 1 low profile). We just need a basic card, as long as it has the 3D acceleration. Any recommendations?

    Is there a way to capture all requests to arbitrary sub-domains which do not have a virtual host setup, and redirect to a custom 404 page in nginx? I will have a wild card A record setup *.example.com and all our users will have a sub-domain username.example.com. If someone enters a sub-domain which does not exist how can I redirect to a custom 404 page rather than have it resolve since wild card is setup?

    I enjoy my integrated graphics card Radeon HD 4200 at resolution of 1280x1024 pixels on a 19" inches LG Flatron (5:4 aspect ratio) (playing FIFA 10 at max resolution, max quality). But recently i decided to upgrade my monitor and to get an 24" inches BENQ, 1920x1080, fullHD. Would I experience any problems with that graphics card on a such a big monitor? Usually I don't play games, just movies/music/and of programming, but it would be nice to be able to play some Counter Strike without artifacts.

    Is it possible to boot the Acer Aspire One PC from an SD card? I have bricked an Aspire One, but it does not even start the BIOS. Aspire One have this issue and a BIOS update usually work and it helped me once in the past, but this time it's all over, and the BIOS update fails. It still reads the SD card with the magic Ctrl + Esc shortcut used to launch the BIOS update. Can I trick the computer into booting somehow using this shortcut?
