I know it is not ideal running Realtime java on a virtualized infrastructure, but it makes things easier. (Otherwise I just have to install SLES SP2 on physical hardware.)

It needs to store a few GB of data and SQL Azure is too expensive for me, so I'll use Azure tables in the cloud version. Can you recommend a storage solution, which will run on standalone servers and have an API and behavior similar to Azure tables? From what I've seen Server AppFabric does not include Tables. TIA

  • MySQL is killing the server IO.

    I manage a fairly large/busy vBulletin forums (running on gigenet cloud), the database is ~ 10 GB (~9 milion posts, ~60 queries per second), lately MySQL have been grinding the disk like there's no tomorrow according to iotop and slowing the site. The last idea I can think of is using replication, but I'm not sure how much that would help and worried about database sync. I'm out of ideas, any tips on how to improve the situation would be highly appreciated. Specs : Debian Lenny 64bit ~12Ghz (6x2GHz) CPU, 7520gb RAM, 160gb disk. Kernel : 2.6.32-4-amd64 mysqld Ver 5.1.54-0.dotdeb.0 for debian-linux-gnu on x86_64 ((Debian)) Other software: vBulletin 3.8.4 memcached 1.2.2 PHP 5.3.5-0.dotdeb.0 (fpm-fcgi) (built: Jan 7 2011 00:07:27) lighttpd/1.4.28 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver PHP and vBulletin are configured to use memcached.     Hi There, Does anybody know what is the best way to secure bash scripts. I have a script which creates database and source code backup and ftp it to other server. And login/password for destination ftp are plain text. I need somehow encrypt it or hide it in case of website hacking. Or should i create script written on C to create bash file then run it and delete ? Thanks. Thanks for the answers and I am sorry, i wasn't clear enough. I would like to clarify my question in the following items. We are storing the data in Rackspace Cloud files. We can't pull as Cloud files doesn't allow you run a script. We can write the script to run on Server A and pull FTP and MySQL data on servers B, C, D, etc. And we want to protect the passwords on A from the situation where A is hacked.   • AWS own email domain and some generic questions

    I'm getting started with Amazon Web Services and I have a few question I'm not sure about. As every (company) webpage I want to use an "[email protected]" email adress, but how is that done? I looked up at godaddy.com (for domain registration), the offer me an email adress like I want, but for 3 dollars per month. Is this possible with AWS? Because at AWS you have just a complex domain which is not very userfriendly or serious. Also I want to host my dynamic webpage on the amazon cloud, but I'm not sure if I'm doing that right. I've read many guides, and all I know is that I have to purchase a Elastic Compute Cloud, and a Simple Storage Service... and every guide is working with the basic linux package, why not Windows? Is it more expensive? I just want to host a mySQL Server for the dynamic webpage, which is reached over a normal domain. And one last question, if I sign up for an AWS account it asks me for an email account. But I found it a little bit unserious to write there my free-webmailer-adress... How is it done the normal way?     I need to automate the provisioning of a cloud instance (running Fedora 17) for which the following initial facts are true: I have ssh-key based access to a remote user (cloud) That user has password-free root access via sudo. Manual configuration is as simple as logging in and running sudo su - and having at it, but I would like to fully automate this process. The trick is that the system defaults to having the requiretty option enabled for sudo, which means that an attempt to do something like this: ssh remotehost sudo yum -y install puppet Will fail: sudo: sorry, you must have a tty to run sudo I am working around this right now by first pushing over a small Python script that will run a command on a pseudoterminal: import os import sys import errno import subprocess pid, master_fd = os.forkpty() if pid == 0: # child process: now that we're attached to a # pty, run the given command. os.execvp(sys.argv[1], sys.argv[1:]) else: while True: try: data = os.read(master_fd, 1024) except OSError, detail: if detail.errno == errno.EIO: break if not data: break sys.stdout.write(data) os.wait() Assuming that this is named pty, I can then run: ssh remotehost ./pty sudo yum -y install puppet This works fine, but I'm wondering if there are solutions already available that I haven't considered. I would normally think about expect, but it's not installed by default on this system. screen can do this in a pinch, but the best I came up with was: screen -dmS sudo somecommand ...which does work but eats the output. Are there any other tools available that will allocate a pseudoterminal for me that are going to be generally available?

  • iphone dev: UIImageview subclass interface builder - how to call custom initializer

    hi. I messing with iphone developement. I have a uiimageview subclass that I want to use to detect touches. I have sucessfully added to interfacebuilder and I can detect a touch in my UIImageview subclass within my application so all is good on that front. however my UIImageView subclass has a custom initializer which is not called when it is created in interface builder. if I manually initialize the UIImageview and add it programmatically I think it will work but then I lose the ability to 'see' my positioning in Interface builder. how can I either 1) 'see' a uiimageview in interface builder that is added in code? (not possible?) 2) call my custom initializer when the subclass is instantiated in interfacebuilder. thanks

    Hi, I'm having trouble using a tab bar control. Basically, when I build and run I'm just getting the blank white default "Window" screen. I was following this guide: http://www.iphoneosdevcafe.com/2010/03/assignment-4-part-1/#comment-36 Drag a Tab Bar Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Tab Bar Controller. Drag a Navigation Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Navigation Controller. Drag a second Navigation Controller from the Library to MainWindow.xib. Control drag from the App Delegate to the Navigation Controller. This completes all the connections between the App Delegate and the tab bar and two navigation controllers. By using IB to set up the tab bar and navigation controllers in this way, you need not allocate and init the controllers in AppDelegate.m. When you build and run this, you will see the tab bar controller and two navigation controllers. Is there a step there that he missed? How do I hook the Tab Bar Controller up to the Window? EDIT: Do I need to do something like this? mainTabBar = [[UITabBarController alloc] init]; [window addSubview:mainTabBar.view]; That's still not working, but I feel like I'm on the right track? Why can't this all be done from Interface Builder?

    I've read the article (and few others on the subject), but still can't figure out how to show an image unless a link to a file existing on a web-service is hard-coded into the html template. I've got in urls.py: ... (r'^galleries/(landscapes)/(?P<path>.jpg)$', 'django.views.static.serve', {'document_root': settings.MEDIA_URL}), ... where 'landscapes' is one of the albums I'm trying to show images from. (There are several more of them.) In views.py it calls the template with code like that: ... <li><img src=160.jpg alt='' title='' /></li> ... which resolves the image link in html into: http://127.0.0.1:8000/galleries/landscapes/160.jpg In settings.py I have: MEDIA_ROOT = 'C:/siteURL/galleries/' MEDIA_URL = 'http://some-good-URL/galleries/' In file system there is a file C:/siteURL/galleries/landscapes/160.jpg and I do have the same file at http://some-good-URL/galleries/landscapes/160.jpg No matter what I use in urls.py — MEDIA_ROOT or MEDIA_URL (with expectation to have either local images served or from the web-server) — I get following in the source code in the browser: <li><img src=160.jpg /></li> There is no image shown in the browser. What am I doing wrong?

  • iphone Dev - activity indicator with NSThread not working on Nav controller table view

    I really can't get this to work, basically when my JSON feeds loads I want the indicator to show, then hide when it's stopped. It loads top level menu items 1st "Publishing, Broadcasting, Marketing Services", then when Broadcasting is selected it loads a feed using the JSON framework hosted on Google. Round this load I call startIndicator and stopIndicator using the NSThread.     In my bootstrap.php I have the following: if($_SERVER['SERVER_NAME'] == 'localhost') Kohana::$environment = 'development'; else Kohana::$environment = 'production'; ... switch(Kohana::$environment) { case 'development': $settings = array('base_url' => '/kohana/', 'index_file' => FALSE); break; default: $settings = array('base_url' => '/', 'index_file' => FALSE); break; } In .htaccesshave this: # Installation directory RewriteBase /kohana/ This means that if I just upload my kohana application, it will break because the RewriteBase in the .htaccess file will be wrong. Is there a way I can have a conditional in the .htaccess file similar to the one I have in the bootstrap so that it will use the correct RewriteBase?

    I am looking to write a client/server application that will run on both iPhone, OS X and Windows. What are the best solutions for networking that will work on all 3 platforms? I have looked into Qt and it doesn't look like it has support for iPhone. I have also looked at boost, and that looks like it can be compiled for the iPhone. However I was hoping for a somewhat higher level framework like what Qt has to offer.
