• Passing complex objects to javascript via IScriptControl

  I'm playing around with a asp.net page that's using the IScriptControl interface to pass data from the code-behind to the custom javascript object running on the browser. I'm passing a number of properties via IScriptControl.GetScriptDescriptors(), and they're all working fine, except for one. That one is a class derived from System.Collections.Generic.Dictionary<. And even that one has been working for me, so long as the elements in the collection were scalars - ints, doubles, and strings. But when I tried to pass a member of a class, it showed up as a null object in the javascript. The class in question is marked [Serializable]. I changed it to a struct, and got the same behavior. It looks as if the serializer used in IScriptControl does a shallow copy. I need a deep copy. Any ideas?

  Perhaps someone can help me out with this one: I'm using a basic search function to find an array deep within an array. The problem is, once that array is found, I'd also like to return it's parent key. Is there a PHP function that can determine the parent key of an array? Below is an example of the Search Function... • Problems with synaptic touchpad

  The "enhanced" features of the synaptics touchpad (ie scroll, pinch zoom) on my windows 7 64 bit dell studio 17 only work intermittently. This was an issue with the original OEM driver and also with the new driver from synaptics - please do not suggest that i update, reinstall, install as administrator, check or jiggle the driver - if i hear that one more time i will freak out. I have researched this for days and appears to be a common problem without a solution (many suggestions to update the driver though -argh). Dell and synaptics have not been helpful. I have checked that syntpehn.exe and syntphelper.exe are running (sometimes the UAC seems to block syntpehn.exe from running at startup). When the touchpad fails i can still use it to control the pointer and access the synaptics settings although some of the options are disabled (greyed out or simply unresponsive). It is the only pointing device i have installed - i had a logitech trackball attached but have uninstalled all software and drivers (including hidden devices) as per synaptic. It is also the only device using IRQ 12. Any help would be greatly appreciated except "update the driver".

• Can TextMate find matching opening and closing tags?

  Something I liked in Visual Studio was that I could click an opening tag, say and it would do its best to highlight in bold the closing tag. Does anyone know if you can do that in textmate? I searched an looked but cannot find it. It gets hard to find the closing tag many DIVs deep. If TextMate won't do it, can anyone tell me an editor on Mac that will? Thank you for any help. EDIT: If it can do it, can someone please tell me how? Thanks again.

• Java, searching through folders to match a name

  Hi folks, I using java to search for a file or folder that matches a specific case. For instance i want to search through all the files and folders and iterate through them as many times as necessary untill i find a result. The catch I searching for files and folders through a binary image of a file system. This means i doubt there are any preexisting classes such java.file.* to do it for me. If it helps i can tell you that i can tell the difference between files and folders easily enough. (a folder is flagged as 0x20) The only way i can think of is to do a standard loop and iterated several times but this limits me if a file or folder is several folders deep. All input greatly welcome

  I've got an XElement deep within a document. Given the XElement (and XDocument?), is there an extension method to get its full (i.e. absolute, e.g. /root/item/element/child) XPath? E.g. myXElement.GetXPath()? EDIT: Okay, looks like I overlooked something very important. Whoops! The index of the element needs to be taken into account. • NHibernate, the Parallel Framework, and SQL Server

  hey guys, we have a loop that: 1.Loops over several thousand xml files. Altogether we're parsing millions of "user" nodes. 2.In each iteration we parse a "user" xml, do custom deserialization 3.finally, in each iteration, we send our object to nhibernate for saving. We use: .SaveOrUpdateAndFlush(user); This is a lengthy process, and we thought it would be a perfect candidate for testing out the .NET 4.0 Parallel libraries. So we wrapped the loop in a: Parallel.ForEach(); After doing this, we start getting "random" Timeout Exceptions from SQL Server, and finally, after leaving it running all night, OutOfMemory unhandled exceptions. I haven't done deep debugging on this yet, but what do you guys think. Is this simply a limitation of SQL Server, or could it be our NHibernate setup, or what? cheers andy

• Free/opensource application for charting stock prices?

  I am looking for a free or FOSS software application for SIMPLY charting stock prices. I am not interested in any of the other nonsense typically bundled with such packages (technical analysis, back testing, tracking etc, etc). All I want to do is the following: Import file from CSV and plot on the chart Ability to scroll the chart left/right (zoom feature would be nice to) Ability to draw straight line (between 2 points) on the plot Ability to plot the graph for different resolutions (for e.g weekly, monthly - or some other custom resolution that I want) print the displayed graph (I can always use screen capture if printing is too much to ask) Thats all I want to do. I am not interested in anything else. I would have thought I could have found something by now. I would have written my own tool (I still will do that at a later stage), but I am a bit short of time at the moment, so I just want something that will do all of the above. Can anyone recommend a package. Last but not the least, I am running on Linux (and would prefer to do so - BUT if I have to, I can run on ahem - you know, Windows)

• ASP.NET Nested masterpages, how to set content in the top page from the aspx file?

  I have some content from a CMS that I need to move to raw asp.net pages. Since the templates are nested I guess I can use nested masterpages to acomplish it, but I'm finding that I can't set values on the top masterpage from the deep child page. Here is a sample. I have several nested masterpages with contentplaceholders: top master (with contentPlaceHolder1) nested master, dependent on top master (with contentPlaceHolder2) aspx page, dependent on nested master, defines content for contentPlaceHolder1 and 2 The problem is that asp.net doesn't allow me to have the value of contentPlaceHolder1 defined in the content page, it should be defined in the nested master. But the point is that the client page knows that value, not the template masters (for instance, the page knows about the graphic it has to display on the the top, but the placeholder for the graphic is the top master). How can I set values in the aspx page to be rendered in the top master?

• Is it possible to control the destination folder when checking out a project from VSS 2005?

  We are currently using VSS 2005 for source control - and please let me start by saying, I've read a lot of posts on Stackoverflow and I realize VSS is the devil. That being said... its what we have to work with now and I have a question about the checkout process. We have the code organized in a certain hierarchy on the vss server, but when we do a checkout we don't need that same hierarchy on our machines. Is there a way to control how visual studio 2008 and vss 2005 create the checkout destination folder so that I don't end up with the code being 9 folders deep on MY machine?

• Web-based SVG or JavaScript Org Chart or Tree Graph Plotting Visualization API

  Hi, I'm looking to build an interactive web-based org chart for a large organization. I somewhat like the interface at ancestry.com where you can hover over people and pan/zoom around and click on different nodes to make them the root. Ideally, I'd like it if people could belong to multiple organizational entities like committees, working groups, etc. In other words the API should support graphs in general, not just trees. I'd like to be able to visually explode each organizational substructure into substituents by clicking on it, with a nice animation of the employees ballooning or spilling out so you can really interactively drill down through the organization. I found http://code.google.com/apis/visualization/documentation/gallery/orgchart.html but it looks a bit rudimentary. I know there are desktop tools like OrgPlus and Visio that can build static charts but I'm really looking for a free, web-based API with open standards-based output like SVG or HTML5 Canvas elements rather than Flash or some proprietary output. Something I can embed into a custom web application and style myself. Something interactive.

• Monitor reset itself and now I can't set the resolution/settings back to how it was before

  I've had my LG 24" widescreen monitor since 2009 and 2 weeks ago I noticed the monitor turned itself off (never had it done this before) so I switched it back on to find all the settings like gamma, resolution etc. different = looked like it had been reset. Everyone in the house swears they never unplugged and plugged it back in. When I opened a webpage the fonts and zoom on the pages were different and my desktop was strange too; fonts of the icons were different etc. The screen seems blurry and when I watch movies the faces look distorted so I thought I would try to first figure out the resolution it used to be but when I go under "Adjust screen resolution" none of the options work and there is no recommended resolution marked; all the options stretch out the screen and looks terrible so right now I have it set to the least distorted one. Then since the resolution wasn't working I set the other manual settings(done by physical buttons on the monitor) back to how it used to be (luckily, I had written these down). The monitor looks better but the resolution makes it a strain to use. I thought maybe some Windows update caused this crap so I tried to System Restore: didn't work. What went wrong? A few questions: 1) What was the likely cause of the monitor shutting down itself and screwing up the settings I have been using since the day I bought the monitor? 2) Why have the fonts changed everywhere unless this is a HDD/video card problem? 3) How do I find the perfect resolution it used to be? The monitor wants me to set it to 1920 x 1080 but that isn't one of the options although I don't remember what resolution I used before. I use the 16:9 setting while I try the available resolution options but nothing looks good! How do I find what it used to be? • Testing objects for changes

  I have an application that needs to determine whether a user has made a change to an object. So, when the object is first loaded, I create a deep copy (using serialization/deserialization) and save the copy to a separate field. The copy becomes myCurrentObject, and the original becomes myOriginalObject. Now I need to test myCurrentObject for changes, which I plan to do by comparing it to myOriginalObject. All I need is a boolean result indicating whether any changes have been made. I have already determined that a simple hashcode comparison won't work. GetHashCode() generates different results for the two objects, even when there are no changes. I am getting ready to write a method to do a property-by-property comparison, but before I do, I thought I would check to see if there is a simpler and more reusable way to test myCurrentObject to see if it has changed from myOriginalObject. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

• Track pageviews in Google Analytics on partial url of Grails application

  For my Grails application I want to set up Google Analytics to track only "partial" url's. I 'll explain: a typical Grails url consists of the following parts: domain + application-name + controller + action + id e.g. www.mydomain.com/myapp/controller/action/12345 As far as I understand for Google Analytics the page to be tracked is identified by the entire url. For my purpose I'm not interested in the id part of the url: I want to know which actions have been performed, but I need not know for which id the action was executed. And of course I would like a generic solution, because I have multiple controllers and multiple actions... Maybe some kind of filter stating "I want to track pages 3 levels deep (/myapp/controller/action)" would do? Or a filter stating "exclude everything from url after the last /"? • How to shrink-to-fit an std::vector in a memory-efficient way?

  I would like to 'shrink-to-fit' an std::vector, to reduce its capacity to its exact size, so that additional memory is freed. The standard trick seems to be the one described here: template< typename T, class Allocator > void shrink_capacity(std::vector<T,Allocator>& v) { std::vector<T,Allocator>(v.begin(),v.end()).swap(v); } The whole point of shrink-to-fit is to save memory, but doesn't this method first create a deep copy and then swaps the instances? So at some point -- when the copy is constructed -- the memory usage is doubled? If that is the case, is there a more memory-friendly method of shrink-to-fit? (In my case the vector is really big and I cannot afford to have both the original plus a copy of it in memory at any time.)

• CakePHP: Why does adding 'Security' component break my app?

  I have a strange problem -- of my own making -- that's cropped up, and is driving me crazy. At some point, I inadvertently destroyed a file in the app/tmp directory...I'm not sure which file. But now my app breaks when I include the "Security" component, and works just fine when it's not included. I'm thinking it might be related to the Security.salt value somehow, or possibly to the saved session info, but I don't really have a deep enough knowledge of CakePHP to figure it out. Can anyone offer any insight here?

  In Java, you can make an enum having multiples values. In objective-C, this cannot be done easily. I've read many pages about this but I didn't found anything satisfying that would allow me to use enums by a simple way and to keep the enum declaration and their different values in the same file. • jQuery: How to select the next element with name-xyz?

  I'm trying to build a really simple generic toggle functionality where the toggling "switch" has a class of .toggle and then I want it to toggle() the next element that has the class .toggle-content. Example HTML: <p> <a href="#" class="toggle">Toggle the thing</a> </p> <p class="toggle-content hidden">I'm totally hidden right now</p> So right now I'd toggle that with: $(".toggle").click(function() { $(this).parent().next('.toggle-content').toggle(); }); The problem is if the .toggle class is any deeper in the DOM, I have to keep tacking on more parent()'s depending on how deep it is/isn't. So how can I just select the next instance of .toggle-content without having use a bunch of parent()'s and next()'s?

• Silly CSS ref problem.

  Hi All, I am having a very weird problem. I cannot for the life of me figure it out. The code for my page (at the moment), is this: <link rel="stylesheet" href="assets/css/default.css" /> But, why does it not load the stylesheet? When I move the stylesheet into the same location as the index.html page, and then change the references to it to point to the root dir, it works again? It never wants to work if the stylesheet is any more than 1 directory deep. Is this normal? Or should it still work?

• Weird behaviour of a deserialized class

  I've got a huge XML file that's being deserialized by XmlSerializer in an XSD-generated class structure. Everything used to work just fine, but now a weird thing started happening. Sometimes (50% of runs) a field of a certain object of a class that's deep in the class tree just changes to a certain value of the same field of a different object of the same class. It happens when entering some function, when debugger steps from opening "{" to the first line of code. I understand that it's stupid question, but maybe someone have any thoughts?

• Does the UISplitViewController have to be the root controller of an iPad app?

  Hey friends, According to Apple's documentation on the UISplitViewController (in the new iPad 3.2 SDK) it looks like they intend for you to use it only as a root controller of an app. In other words...it seams like you cannot push a UISplitViewController onto a UINavigationController because obviously the UINavigationController would need to hold the split view. Can anyone confirm if this is a true limitation of the UISplitViewController? I was hoping to use the split view in my app a few levels deep in my UINavigationController hierarchy but it looks like I won't be able to do that unless there is a way. Thank you!
