• Strategy and AI for the game 'Proximity'

  'Proximity' is a strategy game of territorial domination similar to Othello, Go and Risk. Two players, uses a 10x12 hex grid. Game invented by Brian Cable in 2007. Seems to be a worthy game for discussing a) optimal strategy then b) how to build an AI Strategies are going to be probabilistic or heuristic-based, due to the randomness factor, and the high branching factor (starts out at 120). So it will be kind of hard to compare objectively. A compute time limit of 5s per turn seems reasonable. Game: Flash version here and many copies elsewhere on the web Rules: here Object: to have control of the most armies after all tiles have been placed. Each turn you received a randomly numbered tile (value between 1 and 20 armies) to place on any vacant board space. If this tile is adjacent to any ally tiles, it will strengthen each tile's defenses +1 (up to a max value of 20). If it is adjacent to any enemy tiles, it will take control over them if its number is higher than the number on the enemy tile. Thoughts on strategy: Here are some initial thoughts; setting the computer AI to Expert will probably teach a lot: minimizing your perimeter seems to be a good strategy, to prevent flips and minimize worst-case damage like in Go, leaving holes inside your formation is lethal, only more so with the hex grid because you can lose armies on up to 6 squares in one move low-numbered tiles are a liability, so place them away from your main territory, near the board edges and scattered. You can also use low-numbered tiles to plug holes in your formation, or make small gains along the perimeter which the opponent will not tend to bother attacking. a triangle formation of three pieces is strong since they mutually reinforce, and also reduce the perimeter Each tile can be flipped at most 6 times, i.e. when its neighbor tiles are occupied. Control of a formation can flow back and forth. Sometimes you lose part of a formation and plug any holes to render that part of the board 'dead' and lock in your territory/ prevent further losses. Low-numbered tiles are obvious-but-low-valued liabilities, but high-numbered tiles can be bigger liabilities if they get flipped (which is harder). One lucky play with a 20-army tile can cause a swing of 200 (from +100 to -100 armies). So tile placement will have both offensive and defensive considerations. Comment 1,2,4 seem to resemble a minimax strategy where we minimize the maximum expected possible loss (modified by some probabilistic consideration of the value ß the opponent can get from 1..20 i.e. a structure which can only be flipped by a ß=20 tile is 'nearly impregnable'.) I'm not clear what the implications of comments 3,5,6 are for optimal strategy. Interested in comments from Go, Chess or Othello players. (The sequel ProximityHD for XBox Live, allows 4-player -cooperative or -competitive local multiplayer increases the branching factor since you now have 5 tiles in your hand at any given time, of which you can only play one. Reinforcement of ally tiles is increased to +2 per ally.)

• jQuery / jqGrids / Submitting form data troubles...

  Ive been messing with jqgrids alot of the last couple days, and I have nearly everything the way I want it from the display, tabs with different grids, etc. Im wanting to make use of Modal for adding and editing elements on my grid. My problem that Im running into is this. I have my editurl:"editsu.php" set, if that file is renamed, on edit, i get a 404 in the modal.. great! However, with that file in place, nothing at all seems to happen. I even put a die("testing"); line at the top, so it sees the file, it just doesnt do anything with it. My database is mysql and database server is running on the local machine only. The container environment is Centos Linux system. I am clueless about why it takes that much of time in executing these process, But when i do the same task from under eclipse it does not take that much of time. Development environment is Windows.

In here, when the JDialog is called, it just opens as a 100% blank window. I have added a JLabel, but it is not there when it is displaying. Anyway, it takes sometime to send the email, after the email is sent, I can see the JLabel in the JDialog. If I take my issue into one sentence, I am calling the JDialog before the email is sent, but it appears blank, after the email is sent, it's content are there! Why is this? Please help!

It doesn't crash when I remove all case instances except case 0: What could be the reason behind it?   This is not a dupe. Please read and understand the issue before marking this as a duplicate question that has been answered already. Several customers are reporting bounce messages like the one below. At first I thought their computers had a virus but then I received one that was server generated so the problem is with the server. I've inspected the logs and these email addresses do not appear in the logs.   I am trying to connect to hidemyass.com VPN services via PPTP, but I am having issues understanding why it isn't working, since I don't get a warning or fatal error and my IP remains the same. • iPod touch has extremely slow wifi, drops packets - only on my router

  I just purchased an iPod Touch. I am having a lot of trouble with its speeds on my Tenda W311R, but it has no speed problems on my neighbor's Netgear router. It will connect and authenticate to my network, but the Speed Test app from speedtest.net shows rates near 20-50 kbps. If I run the speed test immediately after powering the iPod on, it will get speeds of 10-20 Mbps, like it should - but the speeds slow down to the kbps range abut 10-15 seconds afterward. I get the same behavior with encryption and without encryption, and regardless of N, G, or B compatibility settings in the router. I've tried rebooting the iPod and resetting the network settings, but it's still slow. • Apache HTTPD - Segmentation fault when loading mod_jk module

  I just set up mod_jk with my Apache httpd 2.0.52 installation, but now when I try to start Apache, it has a segmentation fault. I've checked that I am using the mod_jk compiled for 2.0.x.. built against the same version I have, in fact. I've also verified that the path I'm giving to LoadModule is correct, and the permissions and the ownership of the file are the same as the rest of the modules'. When I remove the "LoadModule" command for mod_jk from my httpd.conf, there is no segmentation fault. Nothing shows in Apache's error logs. I have tried restarting the server with this module using both service httpd restart and httpd. So when logged in as root I created a user "chris" and then created a directory /var/www/chris I want "chris" to be able to upload and run files to the /var/www/chris directory. Permissions for the chris dir look like this: drwxrwxr-x 2 root chris 4096 Aug 20 03:35 chris As root I created a sample file called abc.php and put it in the chris dir. It worked fine when I test it in a browser. I logged in as chris and uploaded a file called 1234.php. That did not work. I just got a blank PHP page. The code was identical in both files. So it is not the code. The permissions now look like this: -rw-r--r-- 1 root chris 59 Aug 20 03:34 1234.php -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 49 Aug 20 03:21 abc.php How do I alow the "chris" user to upload files and get them to work?

  My mysqld goes to use 99.9% of CPU for variable time (between 2 - 20 minutes), and then goes back to normal 0.1% - 5%.
