  • On the search for my next great .Net Read

    Just got done with "The art of unit testing". It was a great read and i think everyone should go buy a copy. With that said i think the next book I'm like to read would be a architecture / Design type book that would focus heavily on building your objects / software in such a way that it would be: Low Coupling High Cohesion Easily Maintainable / Extended Easy to test Easy to Navigate / Debug The above characteristcs are the most important ones but also maybe it would also include (but not necessary) designing for: Performance - Don't want to design a system at at the end find out its dog slow :) Scalability - Again don't want to design something at the end find out it won't scale. I'd also prefer (but not necessary again): Something newer - Architectural principles seem to gradually evolve / improve over time and id like something with current thinking. .Net as illustrating language - like i said above its not mandatory but since its what i use every day id prefer it to be in .net. Doesn't really matter if its in vb.net or c# Some of the topics that would be talked about its how to minimize dependencies and using interfaces throughout your solution rather than concrete classes. Maybe it would constract /compare some of the newest design principles like DDD, Repository Pattern, Ect... I already have "Clean Code" (don't know if its this type of book or not) and "Working effectively with legacy code" on my radar but id like to read a book based upon the topic i talked about above first. Is there such a book?

  • System.Reflection and InvokeMember, storing type, assembly, and object in a class

    I have tested code to call a method inside of a compiled DLL, and it works. I created a class to store the object, type, and loaded assembly, but something is lost in translation because it is unable to find the member I wish to invoke. If I create a type, object, and assembly, and properly load everything into these and perform InvokeMember on the type, it works just fine. However, when I use the things inside of my class, it throws a MissingMemberException and does not invoke the member, obviously. What am I doing wrong? The member in question is a subroutine which takes one argument, a string. This is quite frustrating.   • Slow performance when utilizing Interop.DSOFile to search files by Custom Document Property

    I am new to the world of VB.NET and have been tasked to put together a little program to search a directory of about 2000 Excel spreadsheets and put together a list to display based on the value of a Custom Document Property within that spreadsheet file. Given that I am far from a computer programmer by education or trade, this has been an adventure. I've gotten it to work, the results are fine. The problem is, it takes well over a minute to run. It is being run over a LAN connection. When I run it locally (using a 'test' directory of about 300 files) it executes in about 4 seconds.     I have a set of hex values in an array in PHP. On my page, I have a slider which the user can "slide" to return a value between 1-100. I want to then, based on this slider value, swap all the colors in the array based on the colors "next" color based on the position in the array. An example of the same sort of thing would be like in photshop where you can rotate the hue of a layer. I want to do the same thing, in PHP, for a hex value. Any clues?

    I am a Lead QA Engineer in a Software company and at a stage in my career wherein i need to plan my next move. Option 1: The very obvious move would be to stay as a QA Lead and eventually become a QA Manager. But i don't see very good prospects/future after that. Or am i wrong? Option 2: I love programming/coding, though i haven't spent a whole lot of time on that. So a direct move to becoming a Software Developer is not possible. Will moving to Test Automation eventually lead me to development. Even so, am i looking at step-down in pay and career-level. Option 3: Moving to Product Management. The form normally acts as it should, but it does concern me that this gremlin is showing up sporadically. It has shown up on Office 2003 as well as Office 2007 on two different computers. Has anyone else encountered this problem and, if so, how did you fix it?

  • get next/previous month from a Time object

    I have a Time object and would like to find the next/previous month. Adding subtracting days does not work as the days per month vary. time = Time.parse('21-12-2008 10:51 UTC') next_month = time + 31 * 24 * 60 * 60 Incrementing the month also falls down as one would have to take care of the rolling time = Time.parse('21-12-2008 10:51 UTC') next_month = Time.utc(time.year, time.month+1) time = Time.parse('01-12-2008 10:51 UTC') previous_month = Time.utc(time.year, time.month-1) The only thing I found working was time = Time.parse('21-12-2008 10:51 UTC') d = Date.new(time.year, time.month, time.day) d >>= 1 next_month = Time.utc(d.year, d.month, d.day, time.hour, time.min, time.sec, time.usec) Is there a more elegant way of doing this that I am not seeing? How would you do it?

  • Methods to achieve first, previous, next and last navigation

    I'm new to programming and have a question about navigation. What are the various methods that can achieve a "First", "Previous", "Next" and "Last" navigation, as seen in article or comic based sites? (Admittedly the "First" link isn't confusing as it can stay static, but what about the others?) For example, on the 50th page, the links would appropriately lead to the 49th and 51st (if it exists, if not it would not function but would automatically become active when such a page exists. In most examples of this I see urls ending with something like ".php?id=50" but am not certain how it's achieved, with a database? Any help will be very much appreciated, thanks.

    Hey guys, let's say I have a sorted list of Floats. Now I'd like to get the index of the next lower item of a given value. The usual for-loop aprroach has a complexity of O(n). Since the list is sorted there must be a way to get the index with O(log n). My O(n) approach: index=0 for i,value in enumerate(mylist): if value>compareValue: index=i-1 Is there a datatype for solving that problem in O(log n)? best regards Sebastian
