• I've filed an ITP bug on bugs.debian.org - now how do I get the package into Ubuntu?

  I've written a development library that I would like to include in the Ubuntu archives. From what I understand, the best way to do this is to first get the package into Debian and then request a package sync. Here is the ITP bug: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=691467 Now my question is simply... what do I do now? Looking at this page, I see horrifying things like "419 days in preparation" and "last activity 404 days ago". I get the impression that getting a package into Debian is a slow process. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? I've tried to do as much work as I can to smooth out the process - I've got a branch with Debian packaging (which gets by Lintian without any errors).

• How to display reboot required user notification after installing a custom package in linux?

  After installing a custom package I should force a reboot of the system. I looked at couple of solutions to this use notify-send to display user notification followed by a reboot command, which did work as planned. But the user notification is only shown when I install the package from command line and not when I installed through Software Center. I came across some posts where they suggested adding the following to the postinst script [ -x /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required ] && \ /usr/share/update-notifier/notify-reboot-required || true Tried including the above in the postinst script but all it does is updating the two files /var/run/reboot-required.pkgs and /var/run/reboot-required with restart information. It neither displayed user-notification nor rebooted the system after package is installed. Is there a way to display reboot required user notification in Ubuntu/Fedora/Open SUSE ?

• apt-get install does not work. Gives the same error every time E: Unable to locate package

  There is an issue, for every package that I try to install. I am using VMWare Player 3.16 & I have installed Ubuntu 12.04. The error is: E:Unable to locate package (PACKAGE NAME) Also, another problem is that there are some configuration errors. So I have to use the CLI rather than the GUI. Now if this is a network error, I'm not sure as to how to open the setting from the command prompt. Even if I get to the GUI, it might not work, as the shortcuts are not available.

• How to package a single text file into a .deb?

  I'm trying to a make a simple .deb package, which would basically edit a config of another package I listed as a dependency. I added the required manipulations to the postinstall file. The problem is I can't find a way to package an example config, which should be copied and edited from the postinstall script. At the moment I just have a folder with the sample config, of which I'm creating a tar.gz and orig.tar.gz, then dh_make in that folder, edit the generated files and run debuild. However if I open the resulting .deb file with an archive manager, I can see that the sample file was not included at all.

  I'm writing my thesis in LaTeX, generating it with pdflatex. I have a large number of figures, many of which are bitmaps (as opposed to SVG) in PNG/JPEG format. I've generally created them to be fairly high resolution (say 1600x1200-ish) to ensure that whatever size they end up in the document, they'll be at least 300dpi when printed. As I'm writing/laying out the document, I'm including graphics (using \includegraphics from the graphicx package) and setting widths/heights as appropriate (e.g. subfigures are quite small). I don't need the images to be any more than about 300 dpi at best, so where I have shrunk a 1600x1200 image down to say 5cm, the image is now at 800 dpi. So despite including some very small (on the page) images, the PDF is becoming quite large. Is there a way to tell pdflatex or graphicx (or something else involved?) to convert all images to a maximum of 300 dpi, based on the dimensions I'm setting with say \includegraphics[width=2in]{filename}? i.e. so it scales the image to a max of 600x600 pixels as it includes it in the PDF (leaving the original file untouched). I know I can resize the original images with various command line applications, and include the pre-resized versions, but given the images vary in size considerably, it wouldn't be as simple as making sure they're all 300dpi for a constant printed size. It'd also be nice to be able to easily create different versions of PDFs (web vs final print) without resizing images manually, so that the 'web' PDF capped images at say 72-100 dpi while the final print one could cap at 600 (if at all).

• Python on Mac: Fink? MacPorts? Builtin? Homebrew? Binary installer?

  For the last few days, I have been trying to use Python for some audio development. The thing is, Mac OSX does not handle uninstalling stuff well. Actually, there is no way to uninstall anything. Once it is on your system, you better pray that it didn't do any funny stuff. Hence, I don't really want to rely on installer packages for Python. So I turn to Homebrew and install Python using Homebrew. Works fabulously. Using pip, Numpy, SciPy, Matplotlib were no (big) problem, either. Now I want to play audio. There is a host of different packages out there, but pip does not seem willing to install any. But, there is a binary distribution for PyGame, which I guess should work with the built-in Python. Hence my question: What would you do? Would you just install the binary distributions and hope that they interoperate well and never need uninstalling? Would you hack your way through whichever package control management system you prefer and deal with its problems? Something else?

I have extended MockContext() but have not done anything with it yet as I don't know what need to be done.   I need to install packages within non-internet connection environment. My plan is to download dist structure from Internet and then add file path to /etc/apt/sources.list. So I download related structure includes ubunt/dists/precise, precise-backports, precise-proposed, precise-security, precise-updates from a ftp mirror server. • java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError thrown with my own packages in Android 1.5

  Hi, I have developed an application which has several packages within it's project... A class in one of those packages is called right away in the first line of code, which throws the dreaded java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError error... I don't get it, the package simply is within the project, and it works fine on my Android 1.6 device, but won't work with my 1.5 device... I do have to say that the project was originally set for 1.6, but then I changed the within the manifest from 4 to 3... Is that bad practice ? Or maybe it has nothing to do with the platform version ? • Adobe Air, packaged install fails with my trace routine... how come?

  I cobbled together some code from here and there for a trace I like... it generates an error to get a stack trace and picks out the traced routine name, I like that detail in the trace log. Problem: it fails in an installed AIR file. I wonder why? • Winlibre - An Aptitude-Synaptic for Windows. Would that be useful?

  Hi everyone. Last year, in 2009 GSoC, I participated with an organization called Winlibre. The basic idea is having a project similar to Aptitude (or Apt-get) and a GUI like Synaptic but for Windows and just to hold (initially), only open source software. The project was just ok, we finished what we considered was a good starting point but unfortunately, due to different occupations of the developers, the project has been idle almost since GSoC finished. Now, I have some energy, time and interest to try to continue this development. The project was divided in 3 parts: A repository server (which i worked on, and which was going to store and serve packages and files), a package creator for developers, and the main app, which is apt-get and its GUI. I have been thinking about the project, and the first question that came to my mind is.. actually is this project useful for developers and Windows users? Keep in mind that the idea is to solve dependencies problems, and install packages "cleanly". I'm not a Windows developer and just a casual user, so i really don't have a lot of experience on how things are handled there, but as far as I have seen, all installers handle those dependencies. Will windows developers be willing to switch from installers to a packages way of handling installations of Open source Software? Or it's just ok to create packages for already existing installers? The packages concept is basically the same as .deb or .rpm files. I still have some other questions, but basically i would like to make sure that it's useful in someway to users and Windows developers, and if developers would find this project interesting. But I don't know why it keeps reporting the http error 416. I searched in google and found the following description of the error but it doesn't seem to help much. HTTP ERROR 416 - Requested Range Not Satisfiable A 416 status code indicates that the server was unable to fulfill the request. This may be, for example, because the client asked for the 800th-900th bytes of a document, but the document was only 200 bytes long. It suggests me to use the --skip-broken option, I tried and the output is the same. I already tested many times, it just doesn't work when the --security option is used. What could be the possible cause for this problem?

• How to add a whole directory or project output to WiX package

  We decided to switch from VS integrated setup to WiX. However, what we currently do is use projects output files as the input for the setup project. This lets us easily add Application Files to a directory (for images, samples, and other resources...) and those files are automatically added to the setup when we build. I could not find any similar feature in WiX. WiX seems to require one Directory entry and one File entry for each and every directory and file. This would require us to change the WiX source everytime a file is added which, to my eyes, is prohibitive since we have so many of them. Is there any integrated way of doing that with WiX or do I have to write my own task that will create a WiX source before calling candle?
