  • Conditional themes in Visual Studio 2008

    Can I have different visual studio themes associated to different solutions? Here's my problem. I have two files with sames names that have almost identical contents from two different solutions, open simultaneously. Of course, I have the first solution open and the file from the second solution is opened from explorer and has no connection to the first solution what so ever. Is there any way I can distinguish the the file that belongs to the solution from the other file, just by a different tab color or something like that and without hovering over the tab to look up the path.   • Visual Studio 2008 compiles anything in C++ file?

    I noticed today that a source code file in a project was compiling even though it had junk at the top of it. It got me wondering what all would pass without error through the compiler. Here is an example of code that will not generate any error messages: what kind of weird behaviour is this??? #include "stdafx.h" // what is up? int foo(int bar) { bla bla bla????? return bar; } and more junk??? What in the world is the compiler doing to allow this code to compile without giving any error messages? I'm using Visual Studio 2008 and this is unmanaged C++ code. The foo function isn't actually generated in the object file so it can't be used but why no errors???

    I have just discovered macros in Visual Studio and I can't be happier. Well... I have my complaints but... you know ;) A few of my macros are taking quite a while to complete and I am looking for a way to track progress. I build a log file during most of my macro processes but I have not found a good way to report progress without pausing the process. Ex. MsgBox("Progress") Any way to access the output window or even better the VS status bar?

  • How to use Visual Studio and IIS7 together?

    Hi folks, i'm trying to use Visual Studio 2010 (but this also happens with VS2008) as my web server for all locahost development. When i go into the properties for my web application (sigh, it's a legacy web FORMS app) and check the Web tab .. then check the Use Local IIS Web Server option ... it only allows me to create a virtual directory against a website. Why?! this is not what I want :( I wanted to have my own IIS7 website (no virtual directory) and debug against that. Can anyone help me? As a side note, i tried to use the third option Use Custom Web Server .. which ends up pointing to my localhost iis7 server. Now, this works ... but when i wish to Start Debugging .. it errors :( (it's not sure how to attach to that process or something?) So - can anyone out there please help?

    In the Visual Studio 2008 IDE, the properties page allows you to access the version. However, for executables, there appears to be two versions: Under the Publish tab, there is a publish version with a flag to auto increment. Under the Applications Tab (Assembly Info...) there is an assembly and file version - this appears to change the AssemblyInfo.cs file. My question is, what is the difference between the two versions and what are the implications of setting each?

    Hi all, I am using Visual Studio 2008 and CR XI R2 for a web application built in silverlight. currently I am having a problem with showing a dynamic image on a crystal report. I was told that the reference file added in the project might be old version, so I replaced the reference files to be 11.5x version from 10.5x version. I removed all 10.5x dlls and then added 11.5x dlls, but I see 10.5x dlls are added instead. does anybody how to fix this problem? Please help. Thanks,

  • Alternative to 'publish' in visual studio

    I am working on an app with configurable files. When i publish i notice 1) I get an installer which i dont think i can opt out of 2) I dont know where the install path is and if i change the config files the application will not install (maybe not run either if i edit them in the right place?) So what alternatives do i have? I would like some event i can run which builds in release mode then copies the release.exe and any config/media file and move it to path/deploy/prj/ so i can zip it or share it instead of a path in my sensitive path/src area (bonus is i can share deploy if i want all projects to be available (and no source)) Using visual studio 2010 -edit- also i need some data in src/relatedprj/bin/*, to be copied into the root

  • Visual Studio inserting indents as spaces to html output

    Hi, I am using Visual Studio 2010 for an MVC website project. I have an big problem and dont know hot to solve it. When i am looking to the output of html in firebug indents in my aspx and ascx files are outputed as space in same places. I think its about line ending of files but i am not sure how to fix them. I am adding some pictures about problem. When i am adding a breakpoint it also add red background to spaces (this is problem) I try to delete spaces after hit ctrl+k d same problem happen. If i delete all indents make page 1 line without spaces output is fine but it not a solution.

As the title says, we are wondering if (fully) enabling automated Windows Updates on our developer machines will have implications for MS Visual Studio. That is, will any fixes to any components (be it libraries, UI/IDE, compiler, ...) ever be updated through Windows Update? We want to have 100% exact and reproducible development environments (wrt C++) on all developer machines, and so we are concerned that automated Windows updates may introduce some uncontrolled updates into our development chain.

    I am very new to unit testing. I have been following the procedures for creating a unit test in visual studio 2012 on http://channel9.msdn.com/Events/TechEd/Europe/2012/DEV214. The test just won't start. And it will prompt me "A project with an Output Type of Class Library cannot be started directly. In order to debug this project, add an executable project to this solution which references the library project. Set an executable project as the startup project. Even though I attached the unit test class code to a console program, the test does not start and the test explorer is empty. In the video, it doesn't need to have any running program. The lady only created a class library, and the test will run. what should I do? Note. there is no "create unit test" on the mouse right click menu

    Hi! I've created a custom project template, and now I need to deploy it together with my product (i.e., it should be installed by the same msi I use for the main installation). I'm using a Visual Studio Installer project. One option is to use a custom action and manually copy a template file included in the installation.     I am debugging a project and Visual Studio stops debugging and closes the program on the following line with no exceptions or error messages (I have enabled notifications for any thrown exceptions in options): var query = Session.Linq<RSS>() .Where(x => x.LastRetrieved <= date || x.LastRetrieved == null) .Where(x => x.Moderated); Where Session.Linq refers to LINQ2NHibernate. Anyway, the question is: what are the possible reasons for such behavior? Tested both on VS 2010 and 2008 - they behave identically just falling out of debugging.

    In Visual Studio 2008 project properties, Application tab, I can set the Output type to Windows Application, Console Application, or Class Library. I have a project that I want to build as a stand-alone tool (console app) and be available to a couple other tools I'm working on as a class library. The VS GUI only lets me choose one or the other, and building the proj twice all the time is inconvenient. How can I set it up to build both output types in a single build job? Do I write some custom MSBuild .targets file or what?

  • Visual Studio 2008 error while debugging an app with "uiAccess=true" in the manifest

    I have a C# WinForms application that has "uiAccess" set to "True" in it's manifest file. When I try to start/debug it in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 under Windows 7 x64 (RTM) I get this error: Running an Accessibility application requires following the steps described in Help. The help button is a broken link, and clicking ok just closes the application. It is digitally signed, and I can start it just fine in Windows Explorer.   • How do I set a resource file to non-embedded

    In Visual studio 2008 is it possible to have a resource file that is included as a separate file after compilation rather than as an embedded resource. This is to enable small changes to be rolled out more easily. I have tried build options of Resource, None, Compile and also copy local on and off for most of these. However when ever I try access the resource at run time I get a cannot find resource exception. Is this actually possible or am I wasting my time?

    We have a VS 2010 solution that includes a few class library projects, a SQL Server 2008 database project and a Wix setup project. We are trying to get to a point where the following happens in the order specified: Build the class library projects and the database project Deploy the database project to generate the deploy .sql script Build the Wix setup project. The reason for the desired order is that the setup project requires the deployment .sql scripts as it will use these to generate/update the database on the machine that the msi is run. It seems that there is no way within a Visual Studio solution file to create this type of build/deploy/build order. Is this correct? Thanks

    I'm slowly starting to get the hang of the _T stuff in Visual Studio 2008 c++, but a few things still elude me. I can see the benefit of the flexibility, but if I can't get the basics soon, I think I'll go back to the standard way of doing this - much less confusing. The idea with the code below is that it scans the parameters for -d and then stores the text that follows that in the string variable fileDir. It also ignores any other parameters.     Hi guys I have a problem that has lately being bugging me on 2 different computers What is happening is that I press F5, to compile my website, the website loads, but I cannot debug! Its like I am not running the website from visual studio at all. And then sometimes I restart my PC, and it comes back to normal.     Using an arbitrary Windows machine (2000/XP or later), I can install Eclipse CDT to a USB drive move that USB drive onto a different Windows machine--one that does not have any form of Eclipse software already installed, and potentially a different version of Windows (but 2000/XP or later) use Eclipse to develop application-level C/C++ programs on that second machine (and that includes using the debugger), running directly from the USB drive without copying anything to C:. I can do all this without having Administrator privileges on either machine. I can do the same with NetBeans, and with several other IDEs that support C/C++ development. Is it possible to do this with any version of Visual Studio Express? If not, can you explain the technical reason(s) this doesn't work?

  • Changing a project's files based on solution in Visual Studio 2008

    In one C# solution I have several projects that share a CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file, so that certain assembly attributes are shared across all projects. This works fine so long as I only have one CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file. However I have several solutions (applications) which use these projects, and each solution has its own version of CommonAssemblyInfo.cs. How can I make the projects use a different CommonAssemblyInfo.cs file depending on which solution they are in? In the end I want my assemblies to have attributes specific to the solution they were compiled from. I don't think I can make them files Solution files because they can't all be in the same directory with the same filename. I can't use pre-build events because I don't have a particular project which is always built first. I would prefer not to use a build script because I would like to be able to build and run the solutions through the Visual Studio environment.
