• Android 1.5 - 2.1 Search Activity affects Parent Lifecycle

  Behavior seems consistent in Android 1.5 to 2.1 Short version is this, it appears that when my (android search facility) search activity is fired from the android QSR due to either a suggestion or search, UNLESS my search activity in turn fires off a VISIBLE activity that is not the parent of the search, the search parents life cycle changes. It will NOT fire onDestroy until I launch a visible activity from it. If I do, onDestroy will fire fine. I need a way to get around this behavior... The long version: We have implemented a SearchSuggestion provider and a Search activity in our application. The one thing about it that is very odd is that if the SearchManager passes control to our custom Search activity, AND that activity does not create a visible Activity the Activity which parented the search does not destroy (onDestroy doesn't run) and it will not until we call a visible Activity from the parent activity. As long as our Search Activity fires off another Activity that gets focus the parent activity will fire onDestroy when I back out of it. The trick is that Activity must have a visual component. I tried to fake it out with a 'pass through' Activity so that my Search Activity could fire off another Intent and bail out but that didn't work either. I have tried setting our SearchActivity to launch singleTop and I also tried setting its noHistory attribute to true, tried setResult(RESULT_OK) in SearchACtivity prior to finish, bunch of other things, nothing is working. This is the chunk of code in our Search Activity onCreate. Couple of notes about it: If Intent is Action_Search (user typed in their own search and didn't pick a suggestion), we display a list of results as our Search Activity is a ListActivity. In this case when the item is picked, the Search Activity closes and our parent Activity does fire onDestroy() when we back out. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "action" we fire off an Intent that creates a new visible Activity. In this case same thing, when we leave that new activity and return to the parent activity, the back key does cause the parent activity to fire onDestroy when leaving. If Intent is Action_View (user picked a suggestion) when type is "pitem" is where the problem lies. It works fine (the method call focuses an item on the parent activity), but when the back button is hit on the parent activity onDestroy is NOT called. IF after this executes I pick an option in the parent activity that fires off another activity and return to the parent then back out it will fire onDestroy() in the parent activity. Note that the "action" intent ends up running the exact same method call as "pitem", it just bring up a new visual Activity first. • The gestures of Windows 8 (Consumer preview): part 2, More about Search

  This is part 2 of a multipart blog post about the gestures and shortcuts in Windows 8 consumer preview. Part 1 can be found here! More about the Search charm In the first installment of this series, we talked about the charms and mentioned a few gestures to display the Search charm. Search is a very central and powerful feature in Windows 8, and allows you to search in Apps, Settings, Files and within Metro applications that support the Search contract. There are a few cool features around the Search, and especially the applications associated to it. I already mentioned the keyboard shortcuts you can use: Win-C shows the Charms bar (same as swiping from the right bevel towards the center of the screen). Win-Q open the Search fly out with Apps preselected. Win-W open the Search fly out with Settings preselected. Win-F open the Search fly out with Files preselected. Searching in Metro apps In addition to these three search domains, you can also search a Metro app, as long as it supports the Search contract (check this Build video to learn more about the Search contract). These apps show up in the Search flyout as shown here: Notice the list of apps below the Files button? That’s what we are talking about. First of all, the list order changes when you search in some applications. For instance, in the image above, I had used the Store with the Search charm. This is why the store shows up as the first app. I am not 100% what algorithm is used here (sorting according to number of searches is my guess), but try it out and try to figure it out Applications that have never been searched are sorted alphabetically. Does it mean we will see cool app names like ___AAA_MyCoolApp? I certainly hope not!! Pinning You can also pin often used apps to the Search flyout. To pin an app with the mouse, right click on it in the Search flyout and select Pin from the context menu. With the keyboard, use the arrow keys to go down to the selected app, and then open the context menu. With the finger, simply tap and hold until you see a semi transparent rectangle indicating that the context menu will be shown, then release. The context menu opens up and you can select Pin. Pin context menu Pinned apps Unpinning, Hiding Using the same technique as for pinning here above, you can also unpin a pinned application. Finally, you can also choose to hide an app from the Search flyout altogether. This is a convenient way to clean up and make it easy to find stuff. Note: At this point, I am not sure how to re-add a hidden app to the Search flyout. If anyone knows, please mention it in the comments, thanks! Reordering You can also reorder pinned apps. To do this, with the finger, tap, hold and pull the app to the side, then pull it vertically to reorder it. You can also reorder with the mouse, simply by clicking on an app and pulling it vertically to the place you want to put it. I don’t think there is a way to do that with the keyboard though. • Why the amount of 'indexed' images can go down?

  I have a site with several thousand of images. All those images included into the sitemap submitted to Google Webmaster Tools. The amount of 'submitted' images is OK, but the amount of 'indexed' is significantly lower than the amount of 'submitted' and it is going DOWN! I'd understand if not all of my images got indexed (however it is also not clear and very frustrating for me) but I can not understand how the indexing can go in the negative direction?! All the images stays on their places. And pages containing them stays unchanged. At least they intended to be. Any thoughts?

  I was wandering seeing as Google and others keep trying to get more and more 'human' in terms of rating whats good and whats spam, is it known if they take into account the size of a heading ie. an thats font size is 40px is going to speak allot more to the user than a thats font size is 14px.. similarly does placement factor ? ie. a 300 word article at the bottom of a landing page (not in the footer but bellow the useful content) would just be there for seo purposes. i know they look at if your doing things like text-indent:-9999px; and white text on a white background, but what about these more border line practices that both have legitimate uses but also the possibility to be spammy

  I've been developing the client-side for my web-app in JavaScript. The JavaScript can communicate with my server over REST (HTTP)[JSON, XML, CSV] or RPC (XML, JSON). I'm writing writing this decoupled client in order to use the same code for both my main website and my PhoneGap mobile apps. However recently I've been worrying that writing the website with almost no static content would prevent search-engines (like Google) from indexing my web-page. I was taught about this restriction about 4 years ago, which is why I'm asking here, to see if this restriction is still in-place. Does heavy JavaScript use adversely impact Googleability?

  Hi, My company have a 40 sites with different domains that some of their articles appears in my main website with reference to their source. Our articles write by high level processionals in the field that they write about - we also pay them high salary. In recent google algorithm change my main site rating down very seriously. What should we do to restore company main site google rating? our solution and ideas that not working well: rel="canonical" to source website (we already have it before google change without results) meta "original-source" but not have rating influence (we already have it before google change without results) Edit:: maybe we should delete rel="canonical" from main website articles that refer to our other small websites (because this articles in main website not indexed in google)? • Why can't dash search find a program by its full name?

  For some applications, dash search comes up empty when searching by the application's full name. When typing the first couple of letters, it works. I wonder why... MuseScore is a fine example. When I search for "muse" in the dash search, MuseScore is found. When I search for "musescore", nothing is found. This behavior makes me distrustful of the dash search... I wonder how often it misses installed programs... I like to be able to trust the software tools I'm using.

• SharePoint 2010 search crawl not working

  I have the following set up: 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SQL 1 x Windows server 2008 R2 running SharePoint 2010. I have an issue with the search service application, the crawl appears to run for a never ending amount of time with 0 successes and 0 failures. Checking the Search Application Topology, I find that "Query Component 0" is "Not Responding". I have tried the following: I have ensured that the index directory has the right permissions applied to it and the search service account is in the right groups to consume those permissions. I have re-created the search service application. I have restarted the search service manually. I have trawled the net as much as possible to find a solution but as of yet have not come across something that has resolved this issue. Any input will be very much appreciated

  I'd like to search all files that are different from a specific extension. So, if I search files by using the string *.doc I'd like to see every files that are not .doc. I also would like to hidden the sub-folders in the result display by using that search (but the search must of course search into sub-folders) :) Is it possible this on Windows Vista/7? • How to modify the language used by the Google Search Engine on IE 9.0?

  I would like to know how we can modify the settings of the Google Search Engine used in Internet Explorer 9.0 to force to use a specific language. Our problem is the following: as it uses geolocation by default, and we are in Switzerland, it takes the first of the official languages this is Swiss-German. However, we are located in Geneva where French is the official language. Furthermore, as most of our users speak English, we would like to force the language to be English and not Swiss-German.   I am working on a daily basis on a web application with very large menus. Also doing lots of other Excel manipulations, copy and pasting, etc., I am quite fond of keyboard shortcuts as much faster than using the mouse to point, double-click and then going back to my keyboard etc. Hence, my question is quite simple, does anyone know if there is any shortcut under Firefox which would let me actually select (and not highlight) in my web page the search result so that I can for instance do the following manipulation sequence? [Ctrl]+[F] type the search string, for instance 'regional_unit' the missing shortcut to actually select in my page the string which is currently highlighted thanks to the search feature of FF [Space] or [Enter] key to activate the web element which in my case would systematically correspond to a link or button, etc. May be there would be an addon replacing the default search feature, I don't know... I tried to look over the internet but with the words I am using for this investigation, I do not get relevant search results under Google :(. Thanks a lot

• Simple but efficient way to store a series of small changes to an image?

  I have a series of images. Each one is typically (but not always) similar to the previous one, with 3 or 4 small rectangular regions updated. I need to record these changes using a minimum of disk space. The source images are not compressed, but I would like the deltas to be compressed. I need to be able to recreate the images exactly as input (so a lossy video codec is not appropriate.) I am thinking of something along the lines of: Composite the new image with a negative of the old image Save the composited image in any common format that can compress using RLE (probably PNG.) Recreate the second image by compositing the previous image with the delta. Although the images have an alpha channel, I can ignore it for the purposes of this function. Is there an easy-to-implement algorithm or free Java library with this capability?

Am I missing something super easy?

• Google Drive Update keeps throwing an error when I try to save a thumbnail

  The Base64 string checks out fine. I was able to export it to another website and download it again as my image. When I try to do an update using the Drive Javascript api, it just keeps returning this error: Invalidvaluefor:Notavalidbase64bytestring I also true making the string URL safe. Per this page https://google-api-client-libraries.appspot.com/documentation/drive/v2/python/latest/drive_v2.files.html Am I doing something wrong here, the documentation says send Base64, the string is valid and, the string is intact throughout the process, but Google will not accept it? I am using the javascript api, I think there is maybe a bug sending the thumbnail using the javascript api. • Contacts Issue: Google Contacts, Nokia 5800 And Outlook, Sync and Images

  Hello everyone, this is a multi-question, so please, feel free to answer just one or all of them. My actual situation is: Google contacts sync with Nokia 5800 using MFE(google sync), using google's fake "exchange server". Outlook sync with google using GoContact Sync software (http://www.webgear.co.nz/Products/GOContactSync.aspx). What I want, a easy(or not) way to correctly sync the three of them, even if I have to change some of my "escenario". I know outlook<-google contacts sync is not good yet, but if someone can suggest me some better SW than GoContact Sync. It'll be good. What I really want is to sync a least name, phone, email and image. Then, is there a way to get all my google contacts to by default use their own google image? I noted that, usually i have to manually choose it, and sometimes it doesn't work. I'll like to use something or someone's service to do this automatically. I have tried some services like Soocial, but it gives me a lot of trouble after the first sync, because soccial can ONLY get ALL your contacts, not just "My Contacts"; and also it gives me like 100 bad contacts in outlook because of their beta client. The final goal of all of this is to Get only "My Contacts" from google in Outlook and in the 5800 with their images Get ALL my contacts with their default image, meaning, the contact's personal image Get a solution to correctly sync the three of them, using Google's as the base for the rest of them. Thanks in advance. Again, feel free to sugest me solutions to just one or all them.

• Google Webmasters Tools strange 404 errors referred from same site

  Starting about a month ago, I noticed a sudden increase in 404 errors in Webmasters Tools for one of my sites (over 1400 errors so far). All the errors are being referred from my own site to non existent pages. The 404 error URLs are all of the same format: URL: http://www.helloneighbour.com/save/1347208508000 The number on the end appears to be a timestamp followed by 3 zeros. The referring page, in this case is : Linked from http://www.helloneighbour.com/save/cmw-insurance-insurance-burnaby When I look at the source code of that page, or I use Webmaster tools to view the page as Google sees it, I can't find any link that comes close to what is above. I built the site, and I can't find any place that might be causing these false links either. The server logs (access and error) don't show Google or anyone else trying to access these links. I've marked all these pages as fixed, and waited a couple of weeks, only to find the errors come back again over the last few days. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen anything strange like this, or if someone might have a way for me to debug, replicate this error myself.

• Add bookmarks to Delicious and Google Bookmarks at the same time

  I have used delicious.com (or back then, del.icio.us) to store my bookmarks for a long time now, and I love it. I was looking through some of my Google services, and realized they have a bookmarking service that integrates with your Google searches (I thought they had a bookmarking service before, but it went away? Maybe not). I like delicious just fine - I'm not interested in leaving. But I also like how my Google bookmarks are highlighted (and I'm guessing, brought to the top) in my search results so I can easily tell if I've bookmarked a site (kind of like the "promote up" feature). I can't even count the number of times I search for a site only to find I've been there months or years ago. If sites I've bookmarked in the past are highlighted in my search results, it makes it easier to pick which search result to go to. My question is around bookmarking tools: Is there a bookmarklet or Firefox addon that will let me save a bookmark to multiple services at the same time, in this case, Google and Delicious? Or maybe a service to sync my delicious bookmarks to Google bookmarks on a regular basis? I have used the Delicious addon since the beginning - it would just be nice to add a bookmark to multiple services with 1 addon. For that matter, it would be nice to add Evernote into the mix - click 1 button to save the page to Evernote, and bookmark the page in Google and delicious. EDIT on 7/30/2009 - Summary: A proposed solution is to use the Delicious addon and the GMarks addon to keep the 2 services in sync. I was not able to get the 2 addons to keep everything in sync, so it was also suggest to use the Google Toolbar with the Delicious addon to keep everything in sync. I personally have reservations with letting Google know about every single site I visit, I believe this solution will work, so I am accepting it as the answer. I still wish there was a solution that would let you post a bookmark/page to multiple services at the same time (delicious, google, evernote, digg, diigo, etc.). Thanks!
