On several occasions this year I was asked for advice that amounts to answering ethical questions, in a computer programming context, and I was surprised to see how much fretting and trouble questions which I consider trivial can lead to. Are there any courses or programs specializing in teaching what is expected of an ethical programmer? Has anyone put together a formal curriculum anywhere?

• I'm trying to understand hash tables - can someone explain it to me - clearly?

  I want to understand the correct use and implementation of hash tables in php (sorry). I read somewhere that an in-experienced programmer created a hash table and then iterated through it. Now, I understand why that is wrong but I haven't quite got the full knowledge to know if my understanding is correct (if you know what I mean). So could someone explain to me how to implement a hash table in php (presumably an associative array) and perhaps more importantly, how to access the values 'with a hash' and what that actually means?

  Brand new to Linux, so help a young blood out :-) (I'm a novice/hobby programmer, but completely new to Linux command syntax, etc) Brand new everything Rig. Fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10. Ubuntu installed everything and updates. I am getting VGA output and sound through standard sound port on mb. However the HDMI port on the radeon card is not recognized and not available.   Firstly, I would like to say I think StackOverflow is a really great website, not just from a content perspective, but from a design perspective. The UI is designed in a way that makes it easy to use and the points are great incentives to be a productive part of the community. I was wondering, is there a part of the site, or maybe is there plans to make a new site, which is not programming driven. Like a general knowledge site but with StackOverflow as the engine. I use sites like Yahoo Answer! and they can be useful. But I think the main difference between Stack Overflow and Yahoo Answer is that Yahoo Answer encourages content indiscriminately, whereas Stack Overflow is disciplined enough that it only encourages content that are helpful or useful. I find it great that I can load up a question and the best answer pops up immediately, and the bad answers are voted down. Thanks

  I have been programming quite a lot now and still can't decide which of these packages hierachies was the best: package1 Class1Controller Class1Model Class1View package2 Class2Controller Class2Model Class2View or controller Class1Controller Class2Contoller model Class1Model Class2Model view Class1View Class2View In other words, is it better to apply the MVC design pattern to classes or to packages? Is there any reason to choose one over the other? My question is language-agnostic, but I'm mostly a Java programmer, if it does any difference.

• What am I allowed to do programmatically with pictures that have a Creative Commons "don't modify" license

  I'm working on a project that uses some icons that are under a Creative Commons license (ND) that forbids modification of the picture. What can I do with this icons as a programmer? Can I modify the looks of the image in the program as long as I don't change anything in the file that contains the icon? Have I modified the image if I put a colored transparent layer over it so the color of the icon changes?

I know only a handful to depth and I was hoping someone could elaborate on how many classes or types of programming languages there are. Like how you would lump them together if you had to learn them in groups. Silverlight Templates | Template Monster I've noticed a significant lag on my Macbook Pro 13" in loading the template page in Silverlight. And not just Template Monster templates but other silverlight applications on the web as well. Now why is that? I've been hearing how great Silverlight is and how it's a great business platform blah blah blah. And now Microsoft plans to build Windows Phone 7 on top of Silverlight framework. As much as I want to praise Silverlight, so far it's been nothing but a disappointment to me. Could someone enlighten me, what is so great about Silverlight, and why should I put up with that starting up lag? Silverlight was really next up on my "stuff to learn" list this summer, but now I am not so sure...
