  playaudio() dies because there's no /dev/dsp. None of the outputs from saveaudio() in various formats seem to be playable in QuickTime or VLC. Ideal of course would be something like playaudio(), saving a file and playing it is a work-around that's hideously sub-optimal, but better than nothing.

  I have been developing in Snow Leopard (10.6). I believe I have some Java6-only API features and I'd like to find these. I moved my project to Leopard (10.5) -- since Snow Leopard does not support Java 1.5 -- but I am so far unable to make Eclipse give compile errors for a Java API call which I know to have been added in 1.6. Here is what I have done: Project properties - Java Compiler - set everything to 1.5. Preferences - Java - Installed JREs - selected JVM 1.5.0. Project properties - Java Build Path - Libraries - says JRE System Library [JVM 1.5.0] What am I missing? Is there another way to find Java API calls added in 1.6 when using Eclipse in Snow Leopard? • Ubuntu Server running VNC

  I have access to four computers: 1 Ubuntu Server desktop (Version 10.04) 1 Mac Mini (Snow Leopard) 1 Windows desktop (Windows 7) 1 Windows laptop (Windows Vista) The first three will always be on the home network. My goal is to SSH from the laptop into the server and be able, through VNC (or another remote desktop software), to control the windows and mac computers. The goal of this would be a slightly heightened network security over using VNC to directly access the mac or windows desktop. I have successfully used SSH to connect to the server, but have not been able to successfully implement the remote desktop connection. I would appreciate help doing so. Here's what I've done so far: As per instructions here: http://www.stuartellis.eu/articles/vnc-on-linux/ I installed the following: vnc4server – the main VNC server software vnc-java – enables access from Web browsers with Java support xvnc4viewer – a basic VNC viewer I then set up a password using the vncpasswd command. To attempt to connect to the mac, I followed directions I found in a thread at superuser. com and went to "System PreferencesSharing" and enabled "Screen Sharing". Subsequently, I tried entering the following commands into Ubuntu: vncviewer mac_ip_address::5904 vncviewer mac_ip_address:0 vncviewer mac_ip_address:1 They all returned the following: VNC Viewer Free Edition 4.1.1 for X - built Apr 9 2010 18:41:55 Copyright (C) 2002-2005 RealVNC Ltd. • Do I need to match hardware on a Mac to my PC to get the same user experience?

  I've been playing around with the thought of moving from a PC to a Mac. if you don't want to read this, skip to the "upgrade options" My current setup Most of my time I spent moving back and forth between Linux and Windows. During the last upgrade to Vista, I got myself pc with Core 2 Quad, 8GB of RAM and GeForce 9800GTX+. Currently I'm running dual boot between Ubuntu 10.04 and Windows Vista x64. Most of my work, around 80%, I can do on Ubuntu, which is mostly Ruby/Java programming. If that was all I needed, Ubuntu would be really great. However, I also do quite a lot of Photography and Design, which forces me to use Adobe software (not only Photoshop). I also work with Wacom Intuos4 tablet, which doesn't really have great support on Linux machines. I've tried virtualization both ways (Linux in Win and Win in Linux), but neither was anywhere near satisfying. These are those of many many reasons I want to move to OS X. Upgrade options This is how I see my upgrade options: Mac Mini - cheapest solution, but worst performance iMac - more expensive, better performing with second LCD for free Mac Pro - could match my current PC performance, currently outside of the price range When I compare the Mac hardware vs my current PC, it will be always worse, unless I decide to pump in a lot of money. The question that comes to my head, do I need to match my current PC hardware to get the same user experience with a Mac? If I look at it from the Vista point of view, 2GB RAM is as low as it gets, 4GB is usable ... and the 8GB runs very smoothly. PC HW != Mac HW? If I bought the Mac Mini for roughly the same price I paid for my PC (Core 2 Quad with 8GB RAM), I'd get Core 2 Duo with 4GB RAM. But I don't want to run Vista on it, so I can't compare the hardware directly. Say that I want to do the same things on the Mac Mini as I do on my PC, eg. open up 50 tabs in Google Chrome and start working with a large PSD in Photoshop (couple hundred MB), would running on Mac OS X compensate for the lower hardware performance? My point is, that if I'm about to upgrade, I wouldn't like to upgrade to hardware that runs a lot slower. Good analogy for this is Vista vs Ubuntu, where you can run Ubuntu smoothly on a low end laptop, but in Vista, you'd be happy to open a browser. Does the same principle apply to OS X?

• Get Python to raise MemoryError instead of eating all my disk space

  If I run a Python program with a memory leak, I would normally expect the program to eventually die with MemoryError. But instead, what happens is that all the virtual memory is used until my disk runs out of space. I am running Mac OS X 10.8 on a retina MacBook Pro. My computer generally has between 10GB to 20GB free. Mac OS X is smart enough to not die completely when the disk runs out of space (rather, it gives me a dialog letting me force quit my GUI programs). Is there a way to make Python just die when it runs out of real memory, or some reasonable amount of virtual memory? This is what happens on Linux, as far as I can tell. I guess Mac OS X is more generous than Linux with virtual memory (the fact that I have an SSD might be part of this; I don't know just how smart OS X is with this stuff). Maybe there's a way to tell the Mac OS X kernel to never use so much virtual memory that leaves less than, say, 5 GB free on the hard drive?

  There is a LAN comprising several mac machines (iMac, Mac Pro, macbook etc.), Airport Express router and Mac Mini Server running OS X Server 10.8 (Mountain Lion Server). I need to share a folder on Mac Mini Server by FTP. What did I try so far: Made special partition for FTP Access, call it "Reports" So shared folder would be "/Volumes/Reports" Gave access every user and group in system, and also enabled guest access. I checked posix acl, which is "rwxrwxrwx", I checked sharing settings in "Preferences.app" and "Server.app" Checked that users have access to FTP service Enabled FTP in Server.app I tried access to shared folder (by FTP): via Cyberduck via Finder via shell: ftp server.local And what I got: $ ftp [email protected] Trying 10.0.2.2... Connected to server.local. 220 10.0.2.2 FTP server (tnftpd 20100324+GSSAPI) ready. 331 User ftpuser accepted, provide password. • Discover the public ip of a network without being connected

  Let say, I'm next to a network and can see the traffic (with airodump or similar tool) but can not decipher it (because I am not connected on the network). Is it possible to discover the public ip address of the network ? I know the MAC address of the users connected on the network but do I know the one of the router ? If yes, maybe there is a way to do the matching. I know IP addresses are not forever but some addresses are static and never change. Maybe there is a database of MAC address having recorded that. Google has a database that match MAC address and geographical coordinates so why not with IP addresses ? Other idea, if I know where am I, I can maybe guess the IP range used in the city by the ISP (is it findable ?) and then try to "ping" each IP on the range (if it is a /24, it's possible, even /16 maybe). Will I get some information like the MAC of the box or see some traffic on the network ? These are two ideas I had. I don't know if they are doable, certainly not perfect. Do you think of some others ? By trying several methods, maybe I can get a guess with a bit of luck. Thank you

I have tried that Fn + Right arrow on Mac works as "END" key on Windows -- which makes cursor move to the end of line, for most application like Word for Mac -- I have tried it works. But I tried Fn + Right Arrow does not work for current question input box of SuperUser. I am wondering how to solve this issue and why? • Transferring files from computer to Android Simulator SD Card ?

  I've tried Android Simulator for Mac and can use it well. also I've set 100 MB for SD Storage for that simulator. however, I don't found a way of transferring files from my Mac to that Android Simulator SD Storage. Current solution is I've to send files to my mail and have to access via Simulator ,then download to it . well, but it's not available fro all formats . something like image file(.img) are not allowed to download to the simulator. I've seek any folder of SD Card for Simulator within Android Folder I've extracted. I've found nothing. I want to transfer files from my HD to Android simulator SD card storage. Thus, is there any effective solution that support my idea ? I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.2.

• Inconsistencies between ipod and itunes

  Hi, I have an ipod with 100G of music. Then I open itunes on my Mac, and I can use coverflow for some music files that are on the mac, where the itunes library resides. But I can not see coverflow from itunes, when i click on my ipod, and I have covers for almost all of the albums. Is it normal or just another of the typical inconsistencies of apple that apple fans do not dare to recognize? My question, btw, is, how can i use coverflow on iTunes on the Mac but browsing songs that are on myr (connected) iPod, and using coverflow Thanks

• Applescript cannot find sed during application install

  I am attempting to install an application, but the installer fails with the following error message: sh: sed: command not found and there is an Edit and OK button in the dialog, so I click the Edit button which launches the AppleScript Editor to show me the script that is executing. Running it from within the Editor doesn't work either. The first line of the script with sed is set currdir_modified to do shell script ("echo " & currdir & " | sed 's/ /\\ /g'") I went to the terminal to make sure sed was available, and it is, in /usr/bin. This sounds like a path problem, but I am not sure where to go from here. What can I do to further troubleshoot or solution this issue? I have successfully installed this app on another mac running the same OS X version, so it is specific to my mac and the application's support is not providing any more help because it is my mac's problem, not theirs.

  I want to get the hardware address of my mac's ethernet card. In all samples I saw in include on IOKit/assert.h . Which doesn't seem to exist on my system. GCC throws an error saying he doesn't know the type IOEthernetAddress. Is assert.h necessary for my task? It would be great if someone coud give me a working sample. • Load-balance with LAN and Wi-Fi

  I have a Mac, which runs Mac OS X 10.6 or Ubuntu 9.10 or Windows XP (Multiboot). Solution can be for any of the systems, whatever works better. I have two ISPs, one can be accessed via Wi-Fi, one can be accessed via LAN. In Mac OS X I can define the priority, which network to choose first. But what I wish to do is to load-balance with both networks. I don't want to buy extra hardware. I have some unused Wi-Fi routers if this would help. Compiling and configuring programms in Linux is no problem for me.

• how to disable isight auto adjustments ?

  The built-in isight cam on my macbook machine keeps re-adjusting the lighting (and focus I think). I need to manually set those, but I found nothing of any use in System Preferences or System Profiler. Any way to access the settings ? Any magic terminal commands that allows access to the camera ? Anyone has a driver that allows for any camera access ? 'mac - it just works'...sure, if you want to use it like a kid. the second you actually want to do something with you mac other than the basic things, you can do on ANY regular machine anyway, your 'rights' are done with, as apple seems to only encourage dumb clients. I'm not saying saying this applies to all mac users, but the 'typical/average' one in my view is only going to use it for media(music,video) and web(facebook,blogging, all that) and maybe podcasting,webcasting,etc....ok this is turning into a rant, so I will finish here.

• Play system sounds from one computer through another computer's speakers?

  I have a Mac and a Windows PC at work. I use both at the same time with Synergy and SynergyKM, which is a great setup for me. The Mac has built-in speakers and the PC has a sound card, but no speakers. I don't want to get speakers for use at work; instead I'd rather just have all sounds from both computers play through the Mac's speakers. Is there some sort of audio service I can run on each computer to accomplish that? • A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

• Programs keep waiting for external disk to spin up - how to ignore disk?

  Like many Mac users I have an external Firewire disk hooked up to my Mac to be used by Time Machine. This works very well, backup-wise. The problem is that very often when I use a Mac application and try to open a file, the file selection dialogue window hangs until the external disk has spun up. I never ever want to open a file on the external disk. Sometimes this happens even when I just want to save a file I already saved (i.e. type something and press meta-s). Is there anything I can do about this?

  When I'm away from my office mac I typically login via screen-sharing or VNC from home/another mac. Lately, after using screen sharing this way, my office mac will have several problems: Command+tab and Command+` no longer work Expose and other F-key functions no longer work ctrl+space to launch Google QSB no longer works Things I have tried to remedy this: Restarting the Finder process Restarting the Dock process Disabling the screensaver Unfortunately, the screensaver still runs... A connected issue? Deleting preference files for Dock/Finder/screensaver etc. The only thing that seems to work is a restart. I usually try and avoid that. System details: Macbook pro 13" OS v10.5.8

• Looking for alternative to NetNewsWire and Google Reader

  I have used NetNewsWire on both Mac and iPhone for years, and have been reasonably happy. Unfortunately the latest version of NNW for Mac, which I just upgraded to, now matches Google Reader's policy of marking items read after 30 days. The older version I had been using did not do this. I regularly keep unread items for way longer than 30 days, and do eventually read them, so this is a major bummer for me. The iPhone version has behaved this way forever, but I was ok with that as long as I had the full list on my desktop. Keeping in sync between the iPhone and Mac is very important, so I need to find another online solution with clients available on both sides. I've done a little digging but haven't found much; it seems like Google has pretty much taken over this space. Any suggestions?

• Gmail exchange settings for desktop mail clients?

  So I have an ipad, and I have my gmail account there configured via Microsoft Exchange... I don't know a lot about the underlying technologies, but using exchange is mind blowingly awesome... I mean, I receive mail INSTANTLY, and to be able to sync things like my calendars and my contacts at the same time, its just amazing... So enough gloating, and onwards to the real problem... How do I do the same thing on my Mac? Any email client will do... I've tried both, the built in Mac Mail (4.5) app, as well as Outlook for Mac 2011... And I can't get it to work on either...

• VirtualBox cloned Ubuntu Server network error

  I run a number of virtual servers on my network and I want to be able to easily clone base installations of Ubuntu Server. I use the VBoxManage command to clone the actual hard disk and I then create a new profile for my VM and copy over the settings of the original VM. However, when I boot into the cloned VM, there seems to be a network problem. When I issue a PING I get the message "Network unreachable". I traced it down to the fact that the virtual network card of the cloned VM has a different MAC address then the original VM. When I copy the MAC address the clone seems to work fine. How can I have the cloned VM have it's own MAC address?

• Any programs for getting rid of .DS_Store files? [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: How to prevent Mac OS X creating .DS_Store files on non Mac (HFS) Volumes? I dual boot between Mac and Windows. When I browse my Windows partition with Finder, it drops little .DS_Store turds all over the folders. They show up when I boot back into Windows. Right now I've got one on my Desktop, sigh. Are there any (free) programs I can use to stop this from happening? I know, I know, there's a Finder setting to stop dropping .DS_Store files on network drives, but my local Windows partition is NOT a network drive.
