• What are some potential issues in blocking all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud?

  Recently I, along with the rest of the world, have seen a significant increase in what appears to be scraping from Amazon AWS-related sources. So simply put, I blocked all incoming requests from the Amazon cloud for our hosted application. I know that some good services/bots are now hosted on the cloud, and I'm wondering if certain IP addresses should be allowed, as they may gather data that would in the end benefit our site's SEO rankings? -- UPDATE -- I added a feature to block requests from the following hosts: Amazon Softlayer ServerDeals GigAvenue Since then, I have seen my network traffic decrease (monitored by network out bytes). Average operation is around 10,000,000 bytes. You can see where last week I was not blocking, then started blocking. I've since removed the blocks and will see what the outcome is.

  Recent update to 13.10 left the middle mouse button turning sound on and off!! How do I get back to being able to copy and paste? Select the text then paste with the middle Wheel mouse button. This is a feature I used to use a lot and I find extremely quick and useful. I know I can use ctrl c, ctrl v, and right click select copy, select paste but this is clunky compared to just being able to click the middle wheel button. Is there a settings menu option to gain correct operation of the middle wheel button?

• Getting the front buffer into a gfx mem surface (Dx9)

  I'm using DirectX 9 to acquire the frontbuffer. There are a couple of ways I know of to get at the front buffer: GetRenderTargetData() GetFrontBufferData() The MSDN page on both of these API calls state that the data is copied from device memory to system memory. I'd like to copy the front buffer surface directly to another graphics memory surface, as I have other manipulations to perform on the acquired surface before returning it to system memory. I'm creating a D3DUSAGE_DYNAMIC texture (gfx mem texture) and calling GetFrontBufferData() to write the front buffer to my textures surface0. Is this valid? Will the operation remain in gfx memory, or will it need to move to system memory and then back to graphics memory? If this is the case, is what I'm trying to achieve possible?

• Wireless problems on HP

  I'm not able to enable Wireless using the hardware switch on my HP ProBook4430s. Because of this the Enable Wireless option is greyd out and I cannot enable it. The greyd out option can be seen in the screenshot below. The results of iwconfig for my system are as follows, lo no wireless extensions. wlan0 IEEE 802.11bgn ESSID:off/any Mode:Managed Access Point: Not-Associated Tx-Power=off Retry long limit:7 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off Power Management:off eth0 no wireless extensions. • SSH not working from outside network

  Ok.. First off my ISP does not block ports. I run web server just fine from another machine. I have port forwarded port 22. I can access within network but not out of.. I.E. my android. I get "The Operation Timed Out" on ConnectBot. Oh and I have allowed 22 on UFW. To answer what exactly happened was my ISP blocks port 22, even though a while back they told me they do not block any ports.. I changed it to port 27 and it worked without a problem.

  I need to simulate the behavior of the keyboard shortcut (ALT+F4) using Terminal for a given application. If I open for example gedit and click ALT + F4 , then GEDIT will be xkilled. If I want to achieve same thing using Terminal, how should I proceed?   There is this data structure that trades performance of array access against the need to iterate over it when clearing it. You keep a generation counter with each entry, and also a global generation counter. The "clear" operation increases the generation counter. On each access, you compare local vs. global generation counters; if they differ, the value is treated as "clean". This has come up in this answer on Stack Overflow recently, but I don't remember if this trick has an official name. Does it? One use case is Dijkstra's algorithm if only a tiny subset of the nodes has to be relaxed, and if this has to be done repeatedly.

• My desktop disappeared, how do I get it back?

  I have Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. This morning when I logged into my Ubuntu, after login screen the complete desktop was empty, the only operation I could perform is right-click and open terminal. What I've tried: Ctrl+Alt+F1 unity --reset : didn't work From terminal unity --reset : didn't work And from login screen selecting Ubuntu 2D and that also didn't solve the problem. My laptop is Toshiba SA-60 onboard ATI graphic card with 1 GB RAM. Please tell me how to solve this problem. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu as whenever I install a I/O error pops up, forget about that. I don't want to reinstall Ubuntu. Please help.

• Service Layer - how broad should it be, and should it also be used from the local application?

  The background: I need to build a desktop application with some operations (CRUD and more) (=winforms), I need to make another application which will re-use some of the functions of the main application (=webforms). I'm using service layer for reusing my functions. The service is calling the functions on the BL layer (correct me if I'm doing this wrong). so my desktop has 4 projects - DAL, BL, UI, WEBSERVICES. The dilemma (simple but I still need some more experienced opinions): In my main winform UI - should I call the functions from the BL - bl.getcustomers(), or do it similar to how I call it in the webform, and call the functions from the service - webservices.getcustomers? Should I create a service for every single function on the BL even if I need some of the functions only in one UI? for example - should I create services for all the CRUD operations, even though I need to re-use only update operation in the webform? YOUR HELP IS MUCH APPRECIATED

• Create many similar classes, or just one

  The goal is to create an application that has objects that can represent some operations (add, subtract, etc). All of those objects will have common functions and members, and thus will either implement an interface or inherit from an abstract class (Which would be better practice, this will be in C# if that matters?). As far as I can see, there are two different ways of organizing all of these classes. I could create an addition class, a subtraction class, etc. This has the upside of being highly modular but the difference between classes is so minimal. I could create one class, and have a member that will say what type of operation is being represented. This means lots of switch statements, and losing some modularity, in addition to being harder to maintain. Which is is better practice? Is there a better way of doing that is not listed above? If it matters, the list of functions that should be supported is long.

• Why is not there a python compiler to native machine's code?

  As I understand, the cause of the speed difference between compiled languages and python is, that the first compiles code all way to the native machine's code, whereas python compiles to python bytecode, to be interpreted by the PVM. I see that this way python codes can be used on multiple operation system (at least in most cases), however I do not understand, why is not there an additional (and optional) compiler for python, which compiles the same way as traditional compilers. This would leave to the programmer to chose, which is more important to them; multiplatform executability or performance on native machine. In general; why are not there any languages which could be behave both as compiled and interpreted?

Lately the trend has been that most computing is being done on the GPU and not on the CPU, and since times the issue with programming games on a VM-based language is that garbage collecting may happen randomly. Calculating physics constraints: GPU Doing the real game logic (Determining when to move objects (independent of physics calculations), processing AI): CPU Is my list actually correct? My client is dissatisfied with the new, slow loading time. So, how can I reduce the time my Unity game takes to load? Even in some cases they faced the problem that they could not load the game at all. For the the moment, I'm using an iframe on the new sever as a workaround, but the issue still remains unsolved.

  Given a sequence of integers in range 1 to n. Each number can appear at most once. Let there be a symbol X in the sequence which means remove the minimum element from the list. There can be an arbitrarily number of X in the sequence. Example: 1,3,4,X,5,2,X The output is 1,2. We need to find the best way to perform this operation. The solution I have been thinking is: Scan the sequence from left to right and count number of X which takes O(n) time. Perform partial sorting and find the k smallest elements (k = number of X) which takes O(n+klogk) time using median of medians. Is there a better way to solve this problem using dynamic programming or any other way ?
