• Oracle Releases New Mainframe Re-Hosting in Oracle Tuxedo 11g

• Future of Active FoxPro Pages - secured

  Finally some official news about Active FoxPro Pages, aka AFP. The German company BvL Bürosysteme Vertriebs GmbH bought all rights of Active FoxPro Pages from the insolvency stock. Being a former customer and intensive user of AFP since version 2.0 BvL has own interest in the continuation of AFP on current and future web servers. Together with their partners Christof Wollenhaupt (Foxpert Software Development & Consulting) and Jochen Kirstätter (IOS Indian Ocean Software Ltd) BvL will continue with development, support and marketing of AFP in the upcoming weeks. There will be an updated version of AFP, the relaunch of the website, re-enabling of activation server, re-establishment of support channel, and much more... Personally, I am relieved that this superb product made its way out of the dust of the past years. And of course, to be involved (again) in the development and support of Active FoxPro Pages gives me a big smile. Rest assured that there will be more articles on AFP soon! • How to handle "circular dependency" in dependency injection

  The title says "Circular Dependency", but it is not the correct wording, because to me the design seems solid. However, consider the following scenario, where the blue parts are given from external partner, and orange is my own implementation. Also assume there is more then one ConcreteMain, but I want to use a specific one. (In reality, each class has some more dependencies, but I tried to simplify it here) I would like to instanciate all of this with Depency Injection (Unity), but I obviously get a StackOverflowException on the following code, because Runner tries to instantiate ConcreteMain, and ConcreteMain needs a Runner. IUnityContainer ioc = new UnityContainer(); ioc.RegisterType<IMain, ConcreteMain>() .RegisterType<IMainCallback, Runner>(); var runner = ioc.Resolve<Runner>(); How can I avouid this? Is there any way to structure this so that I can use it with DI? The scenario I'm doing now is setting everything up manually, but that puts a hard dependency on ConcreteMain in the class which instantiates it. • Cannot install Acrobat Reader on Ubuntu 12.04.1

  I have been trying to install Acrobat Reader on my Ubuntu 12.04.1. In the be;ggining, I tried to install it from the software-center, but it crashes with the report: (Reading database ... 189311 files and directories currently installed.) • SQL SERVER – Transaction Log Full – Transaction Log Larger than Data File – Notes from Fields #001

  I am very excited to announce a new series on this blog – Notes from Fields. I have been blogging for almost 7 years on this blog and it has been a wonderful experience. Though, I have extensive experience with SQL and Databases, it is always a good idea that we consult experts for their advice and opinion. Following the same thought process, I have started this new series of Notes from Fields. In this series we will have notes from various experts in the database world. My friends at Linchpin People have graciously decided to support me in my new initiation.  Linchpin People are database coaches and wellness experts for a data driven world. In this very first episode of the Notes from Fields series database expert Tim Radney (partner at Linchpin People) explains a very common issue DBA and Developer faces in their career, when database logs fills up your hard-drive or your database log is larger than your data file. Read the experience of Tim in his own words. As a consultant, I encounter a number of common issues with clients.  One of the more common things I encounter is finding a user database in the FULL recovery model that does not make a regular transaction log backups or ever had a transaction log backup. When I find this, usually the transaction log is several times larger than the data file. Finding this issue is very significant to me in that it allows to me to discuss service level agreements with the client. I get to ask questions such as, are nightly full backups sufficient or do they need point in time recovery.  This conversation has now signed with the customer and gets them to thinking about their disaster recovery and high availability solutions. This issue is also very prominent on SQL Server forums and usually has the title of “Help, my transaction log has filled up my disk” or “Help, my transaction log is many times the size of my database”. In cases where the client only needs the previous full nights backup, I am able to change the recovery model to SIMPLE and shrink the transaction log using DBCC SHRINKFILE (2,1) or by specifying the transaction log file name by using DBCC SHRINKFILE (file_name, target_size). When the client needs point in time recovery then in most cases I will still end up switching the client to the SIMPLE recovery model to truncate the transaction log followed by a full backup. I will then schedule a SQL Agent job to make the regular transaction log backups with an interval determined by the client to meet their service level agreements. It should also be noted that typically when I find an overgrown transaction log the virtual log file count is also out of control. • Renault under threat from industrial espionage, intellectual property the target

  Last year we saw news of both General Motors and Ford losing a significant amount of valuable information to competitors overseas. Within weeks of the turn of 2011 we see the European car manufacturer, Renault, also suffering. In a recent news report, French Industry Minister Eric Besson warned the country was facing "economic war" and referenced a serious case of espionage which concerns information pertaining to the development of electric cars. Renault senior vice president Christian Husson told the AFP news agency that the people concerned were in a "particularly strategic position" in the company. An investigation had uncovered a "body of evidence which shows that the actions of these three colleagues were contrary to the ethics of Renault and knowingly and deliberately placed at risk the company's assets", Mr Husson said. A source told Reuters on Wednesday the company is worried its flagship electric vehicle program, in which Renault with its partner Nissan is investing 4 billion euros ($5.3 billion), might be threatened. This casts a shadow over the estimated losses of Ford ($50 million) and General Motors ($40 million). One executive in the corporate intelligence-gathering industry, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "It's really difficult to say it's a case of corporate espionage ... It can be carelessness." He cited a hypothetical example of an enthusiastic employee giving away too much information about his job on an online forum. While information has always been passed and leaked, inadvertently or on purpose, the rise of the Internet and social media means corporate spies or careless employees are now more likely to be found out, he added. We are seeing more and more examples of where companies like these need to invest in technologies such as Oracle IRM to ensure such important information can be kept under control. It isn't just the recent release of information into the public domain via the Wikileaks website that is of concern, but also the increasing threats of industrial espionage in cases such as these. Information rights management doesn't totally remove the threat, but abilities to control documents no matter where they exist certainly increases the capabilities significantly. Every single time someone opens a sealed document the IRM system audits the activity. This makes identifying a potential source for a leak much easier when you have an absolute record of every person who's had access to the documents. Oracle IRM can also help with accidental or careless loss. Often people use very sensitive information all the time and forget the importance of handling it correctly. With the ability to protect the information from screen shots and prevent people copy and pasting document information into social networks and other, unsecured documents, Oracle IRM brings a totally new level of information security that would have a significant impact on reducing the risk these organizations face of losing their most valuable information.

• At the Java DEMOgrounds - Oracle’s Java Embedded Suite 7.0

  The Java Embedded Suite 7.0, a new, packaged offering that facilitates the creation of  applications across a wide range of  embedded systems including network appliances, healthcare devices, home gateways, and routers was demonstrated by Oleg Kostukovsky of  Oracle’s Java Embedded Global Business Unit. He presented a device-to-cloud application that relied upon a scan station connected to Java Demos throughout JavaOne. This application allows an NFC tag distributed on a handout given to attendees to be scanned to gather various kinds of data. “A raffle allows attendees to check in at six unique demos and qualify for a prize,” explained Kostukovsky. “At the same time, we are collecting data both from NFC tags and sensors. We have a sensor attached to the back of the skin page that collects temperature, humidity, light intensity, and motion data at each pod. So, all of this data is collected using an application running on a small device behind the scan station."“Analytics are performed on the network using Java Embedded Suite and technology from Oracle partners, SeeControl, Hitachi, and Globalscale,” Kostukovsky said. Next, he showed me a data visualization web site showing sensory, environmental, and scan data that is collected on the device and pushed into the cloud. The Oracle product that enabled all of this, Java Embedded Suite 7.0, was announced in late September. “You can see all kinds of data coming from the stations in real-time -- temperature, power consumption, light intensity and humidity,” explained Kostukovsky. “We can identify trends and look at sensory data and see all the trends of all the components. It uses a Java application written by a partner, SeeControl. So we are using a Java app server and web server and a database.” The Market for Java Embedded Suite 7.0 “It's mainly geared to mission-to-mission applications because the overall architecture applies across multiple industries – telematics, transportation, industrial automation, smart metering, etc. This architecture is one in which the network connects to sensory devices and then pre-analyzes the data from these devices, after which it pushes the data to the cloud for processing and visualization. So we are targeting all those industries with those combined solutions. There is a strong interest from Telcos, from carriers, who are now moving more and more to the space of providing full services for their interim applications. They are looking to deploy solutions that will provide a full service to those who are building M-to-M applications.”

• Post Crosstalk 2012

  This year the Oracle Retail users conference, Crosstalk, had a 20% increase in attendees, which was driven by both new customers and those acquired via Endeca.  As the product assets of Oracle have grown, so has the completeness of the solution set.  This year was marked by the breadth of omni-channel stories. Rose Spicer and her marketing team (see photo on left) always strive for an equal balance of retailer presentations, networking opportunities, and unique experiences -- this year was no exception.  We had 41 different retailers from China, Russia, South Africa, Brazil, Chile, US, Canada and the UK sharing their insights with one another. In all there were 251 executives from 120 iconic brands such as Daphne, Kohl's, Morrisons, Abercrombie & Fitch, Hot Topic, Talbots, Petco, Deckers, Sportmaster, Mr. Price, Falabella, and Disney to name a few. From a product perspective, there were a few new developments from Oracle Retail: Endeca's search engine has been integrated into the ATG commerce platform. The latest Retail Analytics application, Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, is generally available. Oracle Retail previewed a new fully-integrated mobile POS. But the real benefit of attending Crosstalk was hearing about the experiences of retailers and partners.  Here are are a few interesting facts I picked up: At Kohl's, the most popular website accessed by customers within their stores is Facebook.  With all the buzz about showrooming, I was really expecting it to be Amazon. Daphne, a Chinese shoe retailer, is opening 3 new stores per day.  Being located near the factories allows them to have a very agile supply chain as well. Disney Stores have increased sales by 25% at stores upgraded to include Mobile POS.  They continue to lead the pack with excellent customer experiences. Quicksilver reported that 1 in 5 visits to their website comes from a tablet.  More evidence that tablets are replacing traditional PCs in households. By tagging shoes with RFID, Saks is able to ensure all shoe models are on display.  If a model is not being displayed, it has no chance of being sold. Additionally, there were awards, store tours on Michigan Avenue, fireworks at Navy Pier, and the Oracle Retail house band, Bolo313, performing at Solider Field.  Speaking of which, a few retailers got on stage and jammed with band -- possible rival to Rock & Roll Retail? BizSpark Tampa Bay:  I run a BizSpark group for Microsoft technologists (meetup.com, search for BizSpark Tampa Bay) and speak at Code Camps about "No Better Time to Start Your Own Tech Business".  The meetup group facilitates a balanced presentation that is respectful to anyone wanting to start their own business, whether part-time or full-time, whether micro (just you), sustainable (grow to 2-25-ish, self-funded), high growth (get venture capital or other funding, grow it, sell it within 5 years, do it again), or hybrid (the new model going forward).  It is an "action" group, with assignments and homework if you want to get the most out of it.   At the end of a year you will either have your business on the path to where you want it to be, or you will know the steps you need to do to get it there. Women in Technology Have been participating in the Women in Technology community since 2008, my main interests in this area are mentoring women in the workplace to have them believe they can become geeks and double their income, and to mentor them with respect to starting and running their own business. Access 2010/SharePoint 2010.  This is a game-changer with respect to the Access community (the ap both devs and IT Pros love to hate, the other a-word that's not a fruit).  I conducted Lunch n Learns and Brunch n Learns around this topic before the Office 2010/SharePoint 2010 launch, and spoke on the topic at SharePoint Saturday Tampa in Nov 2009. My day job is Environmental, Health & Safetey (EHS) consulting and software solutions, where that interfaces with the developer world is with respect to opportunities around Green and Sustainability, The SmartGrid and Juval Lowy's EnergyNet, both of which will require a lot of technology and software to make them work, The new Microsoft Partner competency for "Digital Home", and The Y2K kind of deadline around how managing chemicals in ERP systems is changing because of Global Harmonization, which hits the EU with a hard deadline on 11/30/10 (yes, this year), and hits the USA about 15 months later. • Elastic PaaS with WebLogic and OpenStack, part I

  In my previous blog I described the steps to get OpenStack on Solaris up and running. Now we'll explore how WebLogic and OpenStack can work together to deliver truly elastic Middleware Platform as a Service. Middleware / Platform as a Service goals First, let's define what PaaS should be : PaaS offerings facilitate the deployment of applications without the complexity of managing the underlying hardware and software and provisioning hosting capabilities. To break it down: - PaaS provides a complete platform for hosting solutions (Java EE, SOA, BPM, ...) - Infrastructure provisioning (virtual machine, OS, platform) and managing is hidden from the PaaS user [administrator or developer] - Additionally, PaaS could / should define target SLAs, and the platform should ensure the SLAs are meet automatically. PaaS use case To make it more tangible, we have an IT Administrator who has the requirement to deploy a Java EE enterprise application. The application is used by external users who need to submit reports by the end of each month. As a result, the number of concurrent users will fluctuate, with expected huge spikes around the end of each month. The SLA agreed by the management is that no more than 100 requests should be waiting to be processes at any given time. In addition, the IT admin has no more than 3 days to have the platform and the application operational. The Challenges Some of the challenges the IT Administrator is facing are: - how are we going to ensure the processing power? - how are we going to provision the (virtual) machines, Java EE platform and deploy the application? - how are we going to monitor the SLA? - how are we going to react to SLA, and increase capacity?  The Ideal Solution Ideally, the whole process should be automated, "set it and forget" and require no human interaction: - The vendor packages the solution as deployable image(s) - The images are deployed to the IaaS - From there, automated processes take care of SLA  Solution Architecture with WebLogic 12c, Dynamic Clusters, OpenStack & Solaris OracleSolaris provides OS and virtualisation through Solaris Zones OpenStack is a part of Solaris 11.2 and provides Cloud Management (console and API) WebLogic 12c with Dynamic Clusters provides the Platform Trafic Manager provides load balancing On top of out that, we are going to implement a small control script - Cloud Manager - which is going to monitor SLA through WebLogic Diagnostic Framework. In case there are more than 100 pending requests, the script will: - provision a new virtual machine based on image which is configured for the WebLogic domain - add the machine to WebLogic domain - Increase the number of servers in dynamic cluster - Start the newly provisioned server  Stay tuned for part II The hole solution with working demo will be presented in one of our Partner WebCasts in June, exact date TBA. • Attunity Oracle CDC Solution for SSIS - Beta

  We in no way work for Attunity but we were asked to test drive a beta version of their Oracle CDC solution for SSIS.  Everybody should know that moving more data than you need to takes too much time and uses resources that may better be employed doing something else.  Change data Capture is a technology that is designed to help you identify only the data that has had something done to it and you can therefore move only what is needed.  Microsoft have implemented this exact functionality into SQL server 2008 and I really like it there.  Attunity though are doing it on Oracle. DISCLAIMER: This is a BETA release and some of the parts are a bit ugly/difficult to work with.  The idea though is definitely right and the product once working does exactly what it says on the tin.  They have always been helpful to me when I have had a problem with the product and if that continues then beta testing pain should be eased somewhat. In due course I am going to be doing some videos around me using the product.  If you use Oracle and SSIS then give it a go. Here is their product description.   Attunity is a Microsoft SQL Server technology partner and the creator of the Microsoft Connectors for Oracle and Teradata, currently available in SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition.   Just a quick post today and then probably not much more until next week. Speaking, running hands on labs, meets and greets, and trying to keep up with folks like @oraclenerd means I won’t have much time to write until I get home from San Francisco. Wanted to give a quick shout out to my co-worker and partner-in-Product Management-crime, Ashley Chen this morning. She signed me up for a run across the Golden Gate and back with @bamcgill a few months ago…mostly with my permission. The only thing was, I didn’t run at the time, and that’s basically a 5k. But having goals is good. And yesterday I met a big goal of mine – not looking stupid trying to run across the Golden Gate Bridge. Ok, I did the run and mabye looked a little bit stupid. Ashley, Barry, and I Pre-Run Perfect weather and no fog to cloud the view! So the pre-show fun is over and now it’s time for the show fun to begin. At Oracle Open World? Come by our demo pods. We’re with the other Database folks in the back right-hand corner. We’ll have folks on hand to talk and show Oracle SQL Developer, Oracle SQL Developer Data Modeler, Migrations, and Oracle APEX Listener. • Can't fix broken packages

  I am too dumb but determined to use Ubuntu that I paid a professional to install it for me (dualboot 11.10 with Win7). When I came home I got a lot of things from the software center. Skype did not have a download button so I googled it and Ubuntu help told me to do this: sudo add-apt-repository "deb http://archive.canonical.com/ $(lsb_release -sc) partner" and then this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install skype The terminal told me "that this is potentially harmful..." but I thought it was Ubuntu language meaning "are you sure?" Now the computer is mute. Items cannot be installed or removed until the package catalog is repaired, so I want to repair it but the package operation fails. "sudo aptitude -f install" - command not found Synaptic package manager tells me that I have two broken packages, libc6 and libc6-dev so I do this: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade which tells me to do this: sudo apt-get -f install that ends up like this: Can't exec "locale": No such file or directory at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 16. Use of uninitialized value $Debconf::Encoding::charmap in scalar chomp at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/Encoding.pm line 17. Preconfiguring packages ... dpkg: warning: 'ldconfig' not found in PATH or not executable. dpkg: error: 1 expected program not found in PATH or not executable. Note: root's PATH should usually contain /usr/local/sbin, /usr/sbin and /sbin. • Spotlight on RIVA: CRM integration for Oracle CRM on Demand and Microsoft Exchange

Riva syncs CRM On Demand to ALL Exchange mail apps, not just Windows Outlook.  So, whether customers are using Outlook 2010, Outlook Web Access (web client), Outlook 2011 for Mac, Apple Mail, Outlook on Citrix  or a mobile device, Riva's got them covered. There are no plug-ins to be installed, configured, managed and maintained on users' desktops, laptops as Riva delivers Server-side synchronisation for CRMOD and Exchange. The automation of CRM and Outlook integration will remove the reliance upon users to synchronise between the two with Riva handling this process. Riva allows administrators to define sync policies and apply them to individuals or groups of users depending on their sync requirements. Administrators will be able to determine and manage the exposure of the most pertinent detail to be synchronised between Outlook and CRM On Demand. Custom and organic contact filtering for large deployments i.e. Based on ownership, groupings and contact frequency, filters can be applied on what contact records are shared with the users. Riva provides the capability to synchronise CRM and Outlook beyond Contacts, Calendar entries and Email. The synchronisation can be extended to cater for  opportunities, quotes and custom objects for example within the Outlook interface. Riva SmartConvert Folders can automate the creation of opportunities and associated contacts for example if they don't already exist. This can facilitate a reduction in manual detail entry through quick association whilst also benefiting user adoption. From a mobile perspective, Riva allows users to view and manage their CRM On Demand contacts, calendar, tasks, opportunities and cases from iPad, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry devices.  Again, there are no mobile apps or additional plugins to install, configure or manage. We sync CRM On Demand to Exchange.  Because the mobile device is connected to an Exchange mailbox, the information automatically syncs down to the native address book, calendar and mail apps on the smartphone or tablet. Über den neuen Fokus auf Engineered Systems und die SMB Appliances heißt es dort, so könne Oracle „drei Fliegen mit einer Klappe schlagen“: Erstens wird früheren Sun Hardware-Resellern der Einstieg ins Software-Geschäft erleichtert, zweitens bieten die Appliances neue Möglichkeiten für den Mittelstand und drittens bekräftigt die Strategie das zweistufige Channel-Modell. Dazu Silvia Kaske, Senior Director Channel Sales & Alliances Oracle Deutschland: "Wir stärken weltweit den Channel, weil das SMB-Geschäft zunehmend anzieht." Neben der durchaus positiven Wertung der Channel-Strategie bietet der Artikel einen anschaulichen Überblich darüber, was Engineered Systems eigentlich sind. Außerdem werden die Einsatzmöglichkeiten (Big Data, Mobile Computing, Cloud etc.) und Angebote von Oracle in diesem Bereich dargestellt und diskutiert. Das Highlight hierbei ist – wen wundert’s – die Oracle Database Appliance. Mit dem Portfolio wächst natürlich auch die Zahl der Spezialisierungen. Logisch, findet Silvia Kaske: "Endkunden erwarten keine Generalisten, sondern Spezialisten. Nur mit einem klaren Fokus wird der Partner erfolgreich sein". • My program at #MIX10

  Getting ready to fly to Vegas and MIX10 is really an exciting time! It is also a very busy time, because we are working on a few projects that will be shown on stage, I have my presentation to prepare, and of course as always the book… though these days it has been a bit on the back burner to be honest ;) I arrive in Vegas on Sunday evening around 10PM, so I won’t be able to make it to the traditional IdentityMine dinner this year. I am sure it will be fun nonetheless! My session: Understanding the MVVM pattern http://live.visitmix.com/MIX10/Sessions/EX14 My session is scheduled on the first day, which is awesome, so I am crossing my fingers and hoping that the MIX team doesn’t change it at the last minute… The session will take place on Monday, the 15th of March, 2PM, Room Lagoon F Important: remember that the USA are moving to Summer time on Sunday, so don’t forget to adjust your watches!! Ask the Experts On Monday evening, I will attend the Ask the Experts event, which is taking place between 5Pm and 6:30PM in the main meal hall. This will be a great occasion to grab a beer and talk about code. The Commons MIX has a great place called the Commons, a great location to chill between sessions, and meet tons of interesting people. I love the Commons and plan to spend a lot of time there to meet as many people as I can. Parties I was invited to a few parties, and will do my best to avoid conflicts :) I plan to be at the following events: Silverlight Mixers on Monday evening Insiders MIX party on Tuesday Silverlight partner happy hour on Tuesday too This is a lot of fun, but at the same time we all know that the best value of a conference is to meet people face to face. This is just the right occasion.  And on Thursday… On Thursday I will be attending a Silverlight event at the Luxor. It will be a very busy day, perfect way to end the conference. I fly back home on Friday morning, but due to a long stop in Washington DC (where I intend to go downtown and take pictures… except if the weather is bad, in which case I will probably go to the museum of flight), I will reach home only on Sunday.
