  • Unable to connect to sites using IIS7 Manager

    I'm a developer who has been assigned the task of managing and configuring a new IIS7 instance on a remote server. My domain account has been added as to the local Administrators group on the box, but IIS7 has been configured to accept connections only from accounts with Windows credentials. I've added my domain account to the IIS Manager Permissions for one of my sites, but I'm still unable to connect to either that site, the IIS instance or the server in general from my local machine. There's obviously a missing element to the configuration of this setup but I don't know where to start looking. The event logs on the IIS box show audit failures for my account when trying to connect remote via the IIS7 Manager tool on my local machine. Suggestions gratefully received.

For each new instance, I install the following softwares: etckeeper which keeps tracks of every changes in /etc shorewall to have a simple setup for firewall rsnapshot which keep incremental backup of important directories cron-apt: which take charge of update of the system (or, in my case, send me an email to warn me about new updates) But I was wondering if you administrators have any other wonderful tools for daily management. I'm not talking about remote management (like cfengine) but little tools which help to manage a small number of Linux servers.

  • How to reset the postgres super user password on mac os x

    I installed postgres on my mac running 10.6.8 and I would like to reset the password for the postgres user (I believe this is the super user password) and then restart it. All the directions I found do not work because I think my user name is not recognized by pg as having authority to change the password. (I am on the admin account of my mac) Here is what I tried: Larson-2:~ larson$ psql -U postgres Password for user postgres: psql (9.0.4, server 9.1.2) WARNING: psql version 9.0, server version 9.1. Some psql features might not work. Type "help" for help. postgres=# ALTER USER postgres with password 'mypassword' postgres-# \q and for restart I did: Larson-2:~ larson$ su postgres -c 'pg_ctl -D /opt/local/var/db/postgresql84/defaultdb/ restart > Which didn't work, as the password remained the same as it was before. Can someone provide directions for doing this and for making sure it's recognized by PG? Update I went ahead and edited the pg_hba.conf file located in /Library/PostgreSQL/9.1/data and set the settings as follows: # TYPE DATABASE USER ADDRESS METHOD # "local" is for Unix domain socket connections only local all all trust # IPv4 local connections: host all all 127.0.0.1/32 trust # IPv6 local connections: host all all ::1/128 trust However, like before, the password stayed the same after I changed it. I am not sure what further steps I can take from here.

    I am attempting to connect MySQLWorkbench to a remote MySQL Server. The server has granted access to user@IPAddress However, when I try to connect MySQLWorkbench, it sends user@computername instead. How do I configure the connection to use the IP address instead in MySQLWorkbench? Reference: The remote server is on the local network, so I need to use the local IP address assigned to my client. EDIT What I have tried so far: from the server: mysql -u user@IPAddress -p --host=(ServerIPAddress) Returns: mysql> So that tells me the user account is operational. Furthermore, I confirmed it exists using: select user from mysql.user; returning a table of all users, of which the user I am using is present. I have also opened the port 3306: sbin/iptables -A INPUT -i eth0 -s clientIPAddress -p tcp --destination-port3306 -j ACCEPT Still I encounter Access Denied

    Hi guys - I got all of a sudden a number of strange feedback messages from my sites feedback form its where normally users would come and enter feedback and then I would review it on an admin panel.   • How can I make sftp accounts that can only access their home directory?

    I'm using Ubuntu Server 9.10. I need to setup 6 accounts for users that will exclusively need sftp. When the user logs in, I need them to only have access to their home directory. I don't want them to be able to navigate to any other places in the file system. I need their ability to type commands to be limited to only the commands needed to view and transfer files back and forth to their home directory. Can anyone offer some guidance on setting thing up this way?

    When I'm viewing the job history of a particular SQL Agent Job, I typically want to see whether it succeeded, its duration and maybe the duration of the individual steps of the job. When I open the history in the Log File Viewer, I always need to scroll over and shrink the 'Message' column and drag the 'Duration' column over next to the 'Step Name' column. Is there a way to configure the layout of the Log File Viewer (e.g. reposition columns, resize columns) and save it for future sessions? Thanks!

    It is possible to access the Windows Store from a remote desktop session and initiate the Windows 8.1 Update from the Windows Store, but the update hangs after the first reboot, likely waiting for the user to accept the license check. This leaves the computer unusable remotely. Is there a way to pre-accept the license terms so that the update can complete autonomously? Perhaps an UNATTEND.XML such as would be used for an unattended clean install? Failing that, is there a way to connect with remote desktop during that phase of the install (it appears to be GUI-mode setup running with the usual Windows kernel and full OS)?

  • What should I be doing while I wait for a progress bar?

    So I am sitting here waiting for a progress bar to run (20 mins or so), and was wondering how best to use my time as a SysAdmin. I debated not posting this question briefly, as this could get flagged as subjective, but I think it's an important question, and a question that can be legitimately answered (per the FAQ) I know this something a lot of sys admins deal with, especially if they are client-based I would venture to guess. There is a lot of material out there about how to multi task, but SysAdmin work is unique in this area as well. I could switch over to another project, but I could get wrapped up in that, and forget about the original project I was working on, and that's hard if you are billing a client for your time, both for tracking your time, as well as being fair to that client. I could check ServerFault, but that isn't directly work related, I could sort my email, so on and so forth. What do you do, or what should I do when I have time waiting for a progress bar? Thanks!     I am running Windows 7 at my office and Windows XP at home. I have seen the new Remote Desktop and want to use (I have three monitors at office and three at home) In the specs I saw where in order to use the multimon features you must connect to a Windows 7 client (I am running Windows 7 Professional 64-bit in my office) When I connect to it (from XP running RDP 7) I can't get all my monitors to come up, just one Is there something I am doing wrong? Both are running the same version of RDP Thanks for any help

  • Updating Network Solutions Virtual Private Server

    Just got a VPS from Network Solutions, it's got Red Hat 4, PHP 5.16, Java 1.4, no Yum and a whole bunch of packages I'd expect to have from a fresh install. Anyway, obviously I sound like a spoiled Ubunutoligist, but do I seriously have to manually update all this stuff, is there a shortcut, I'm used to Fedora, so I'm not sure what the differences are between using Yum in Redhat and Fedora. Should I just demand that Network Solutions give me a server that's not 4 years old or is there a way to update this thing that won't take all week?

  • NX Client for Windows 7 Opens Remote Desktop in Multiple Windows

    What I'm trying to do: access my Ubuntu desktop remotely via NX Client on my Windows 7 laptop. My environment: server: Ubuntu 10.10 on AMD 1Ghz/512MB RAM PC client: Windows 7 on ThinkPad sl510 Software: server is running NXServer 3.4.0. Using xfce4 window manager. Laptop is using NXClient for Windows In my NX Client "Desktop" settings I've selected "Unix" and "Custom" for OS and environment. I've also specified "startxfce4" as the application to launch when NX connects. I am able to authenticate an NX session on my laptop. By this I mean, I can start the client on my laptop, enter credentials for my Linux user, and NX establishes a connection to the server and attempts to open a remote desktop window. The problem, though, is that this remote desktop is "fragmented" into many Windows. One window will display the bulk of my desktop (complete with desktop icons for "Home," "File System," and "Trash") while another window will contain the taskbar, and another window will contain the application strip. I can select each of these Windows individually, but I cannot click on any objects within them. I've searched Super User, Ubuntu Forums, NX help, Server Fault, and tried many Google searches - none have turned up another case of this particular problem. I'm stumped. Does anyone have any suggestions for what I might try? I'm guessing the problem has to do with my xfce config files, but I've only just setup this server - it's been a long time since I've used Linux and there's a lot I just don't know. What I am NOT trying to do: use Desktop sharing from Ubuntu, whereby I VNC into a desktop that I've already established on the server. I am trying to configure this Linux box as a headless server that I can stash someplace out-of-the-way in my house, then interact with through my laptop. I don't want to have a monitor or keyboard connected to the Linux box. Thanks for your help! edit: 1/19/2011 Well, this is truly bizarre. To my knowledge I've made no changes to either system - the laptop or the server. But today after starting up the server for the first time in a few days, and making sure that nxserver was running, I was able to connect with the nxclient from my laptop with no problems. I have a full desktop in a single window and I am able to interact with it normally. This is really weird, but the problem seems to be resolved.

  • What does a red icon in XP's "Unlock Computer" dialog mean?

    A user was working from home and had a colleague turn on her computer so she could remote desktop to it. All worked fine, but when she came into the office and used her computer for a while then locked it the computer icon had a red screen, instead of blue. Like in the following mockup: Mockup of red computer screen. It didn't cause any problems and it went away when she rebooted, but I was intrigued to find out whether there was something that caused it or if it was just a windows oddity. I believe she just closed the remote desktop session (without really logging off) from home and then disconnected from the VPN before coming to the office. Any ideas?

The team currently undertaking the task is designing a centralized system with the intent of providing most (if not all) services of the institution electronically. Most of us are academicians with little practical experience. The questions we need answers for are What are the systems (preferably free, as in Beer, and/or open) and best-practices in use in other academic institutions? What are the experiences of people administering academic ICT systems? What are the overheads of attempting to provide services through an intranet cloud (like UEC) for us (a medium-sized academic institution, in a third-world country)?   • Puppet performance compared to cfengine

    I'm considering using Puppet or cfengine. Key factors are performance, and research on the internet suggests cfengine uses less memory and CPU cycles compared to puppet. However, puppet seems easier to use. I need to manage several web servers, as well as handheld tablets and machines that will only connect to some central control servers periodically. All are Linux machines. Would I be able to use either puppet or cfengine for this? And if so, does puppet still make poor use of resources? I'd like to use puppet because it seems simpler, but a lot of the articles I've found refer to cfengine 2 - is cfengine 3 easier to configure? Thanks
