  I'm trying to move a control from one parent to another (if this will work I'm not quite sure). I can get a hold of the control that I want to move. Here is my code: public void MoveElement(UIElement uiElement) { var element = ((FrameworkElement)uiElement).Parent; //TODO:Remove from parent myControl.Children.Add(uiElement); } When I hit the last statment an ArgumentException is thrown stating "Specified Visual is already a child of another Visual or the root of a CompositionTarget." The strange thing is that Parent is returning null. How do locate the parent? Will this even work?

• Why does fileURLWithPath: give me a file://localhost/ URL?

  I have a project I'm working on and this seems like the simplest thing in the world, but the +[NSURL fileURLWithPath:] factory method is returning a strange URL. I created an empty sample project to isolate the problem and in my app delegate's applicationDidFinishLaunching: method I have this simple code: NSString *path = [@"~/Documents" stringByExpandingTildeInPath]; NSURL *url = [NSURL fileURLWithPath:path]; NSLog(@"%@ | %@", path, url); and the NSLog result looks like this: /Users/myusername/Documents | file://localhost/Users/myusername/Documents/ when I would expect the URL to be file:///Users/myusername/Documents. Any thoughts on why this is behaving like this? (10.6.3 in case it matters.)

  I'm trying to get a jsonp callback working using jquery within a greasemonkey script. Here's my jquery: $.ajax({ url: "http://mydomain.com/MyWebService?callback=?", data: { authkey: "temphash" }, type: "get", dataType: "json", cache: false, success: function(data) { console.log(data); } }); in my webservice (asp.net) I'm returning the response with a content type of application/javascript. The response the server is actually sending back is: jsonp1276109314602({"message":"I'm getting tired of this not working"}) The jsonp1276109314602 method name is being randomly generated by jquery, and I'm grabbing it with Request.QueryString["callback"] However my success function is never called and the firebug console gives me an error saying jsonp1276109314602 is not defined. What am I doing wrong?

• Boost timed_wait leap seconds problem

  Hi, I am using the timed_wait from boost C++ library and I am getting a problem with leap seconds. Here is a quick example from boosts documentation: boost::system_time const timeout=boost::get_system_time() + boost::posix_time::milliseconds(500); extern bool done; extern boost::mutex m; extern boost::condition_variable cond; boost::unique_lock<boost::mutex> lk(m); while(!done) { if(!cond.timed_wait(lk,timeout)) { throw "timed out"; } } The timed_wait function is returning 24 seconds earlier than it should. 24 seconds is the current amount of leap seconds in UTC. So, boost is widely used but I could not find any info about this particular problem. Has anyone else experienced this problem? What are the possible causes and solutions? Notes: I am using boost 1.38 on a linux system. I've heard that this problem doesn't happen on MacOS.

  I'm reviewing some old notes from my algorithms course and the dynamic programming problems are seeming a bit tricky to me. I have a problem where we have an unlimited supply of coins, with some denominations x1, x2, ... xn and we want to make change for some value X. We are trying to design a dynamic program to decide whether change for X can be made or not (not minimizing the number of coins, or returning which coins, just true or false). I've done some thinking about this problem, and I can see a recursive method of doing this where it's something like... MakeChange(X, x[1..n this is the coins]) for (int i = 1; i < n; i++) { if ( (X - x[i] ==0) || MakeChange(X - x[i]) ) return true; } return false; Converting this a dynamic program is not coming so easily to me. How might I approach this?

• Unit testing a database connection and general questions on database-dependent code and unit testing

  Hi, If I have a method which establishes a database connection, how could this method be tested? Returning a bool in the event of a successful connection is one way, but is that the best way? From a testability method, is it best to have the connection method as one method and the method to get data back a seperate method? Also, how would I test methods which get back data from a database? I may do an assert against expected data but the actual data can change and still be the right resultset. EDIT: For the last point, to check data, if it's supposed to be a list of cars, then I can check they are real car models. Or if they are a bunch of web servers, I can have a list of existant web servers on the system, return that from the code under test, and get the test result. If the results are different, the data is the issue but the query not? THnaks

  I'm trying to use the Facebook Javascript API to run FQL queries, and it works fine if I try and get users by username or uid, but doesn't work when I'm searching by name. function get_username() { var name = prompt("Enter name: ") FB.api( { method: 'fql.query', query: 'SELECT username FROM user WHERE name in "'+name+'"' }, function(response) { var x = response[0].username alert('Username is ' + x); } ); } I realize that this will probably return multiple users, but I can't figure out how to tell if it's returning multiple users or no users at all, it seems to freeze after trying to get response[0].username. I'm probably making a beginner mistake but any ideas?

  I'm trying to extract text from PDF files using an iFilter. The Adobe PDF iFilter that is distributed with Adobe Reader is awful, returning HRESULT E_FAIL messages for many PDF documents. The FoxIt PDF IFilter works beautifully on virtually all of the PDFs I've been using for testing. The problem is that every time the Adobe Updater runs, it replaces the awesome FoxIt IFilter with the crappy Adobe IFilter. I've been using the LoadIFilter method to get the registered IFilter for PDF files. Is there a way to force the Win32 API to load the FoxIt IFilter instead of the Adobe IFilter? NOTE: This question about determining which IFilters are installed asks a related -- but not identical -- question.

I have built my own little custom XML-RPC server, and since I'd like to keep things simple, on both server and client side, what I would like to accomplish is to create a simplest possible client (in C# preferably) using WCF. Let's say that Contract for service exposed via XML-RPC is as follows: [ServiceContract] public interface IContract { [OperationContract(Action="Ping")] string Ping(); // server returns back string "Pong" [OperationContract(Action="Echo")] string Echo(string message); // server echoes back whatever message is } So, there are two example methods, one without any arguments, and another with simple string argument, both returning strings (just for sake of example).   Hello. I am trying to push an app to heroku and I am getting the error detailed here. So I am trying to determine the corrupt objects using git fsck -full but it isn't returning anything. Nothing happens: Ryan@Ryan-PC ~ $ git fsck --full Ryan@Ryan-PC But I get the object error when I try to push the object to heroku. Is there anyway I can go about repairing the corrupt repository, or can I just delete it and start over? How do I go about doing this?

  SHGetKnownFolderPath() and its cohorts accept one of the constants defined here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd378457%28v=VS.85%29.aspx ), returning the path to a directory. I'm looking for one of these folders which is reliably writable by all users (including LocalSystem) on XP, Vista, and Windows 7... but I think I'm striking out. It appears that, in fact, there is no single location on the hard drive anymore where you can put a file and be assured that all users can write to it on all these OS versions, without fiddling the permissions first. Is this true?

  I am using Zend Framework's library to manage EC2 instances and AMI. However I can't list the AMI's I own and can't list existing EC2 instances. $ec2Instance = new Zend_Service_Amazon_Ec2_Instance($awsAccessKey, $awsSecretKey); $instances = $ec2Instance ->describe(); $ec2Instance -describe() should list all instances but it is returning no instances even though I have three of them running at this time. $ami = new Zend_Service_Amazon_Ec2_Image($awsAccessKey, $awsSecretKey); $images = $ami->describe(); $ami-describe() returns all the public images but none of them are the ones I created even though I have two AMIs. Does any one know what I am missing here?

  As Java has had Sleep and Yield from long ago, I've found answers for that platform, but not for .Net .Net 4 includes the new Thread.Yield() static method. Previously the common way to hand over the CPU to other process was Thread.Sleep(0). Apart from Thread.Yield() returning a boolean, are there other performance, OS internals differences? For example, I'm not sure if Thread.Sleep(0) checks if other thread is ready to run before changing the current Thread to waiting state... if that's not the case, when no other threads are ready, Thread.Sleep(0) would seem rather worse that Thread.Yield().

  this seems really simple but I haven't gotten this to work. I am building my app with grails on google app engine. This pretty much requires you to use JDO. I am making an HTTP call from flex to my app. The action that I am calling on the grails end looks like so def returnShowsByDate = { def query = persistenceManager.newQuery( Show ) def showInstanceList = query.execute() return (List<Show>) showInstanceList } I have tried just returning "hello from grails" and that works just fine. I have alos tried the following return showInstanceList the JDO docs say the query.execute() returns a collection. Why I cant just return that to Flex I have no clue. Any thoughts?

• Intercept page request behind firewall return altered content with php and apache

  I'm providing free wifi service and need an ad to be added to all page requests. Currently I have a router forwarding all http requests to an apache server, which redirects all requests to an index.php page. The index.php page reads the request, fetches the content from the appropriate site, and edits the content to include the ad. The problem is that all images and css files etc. cannot be accessed, because when the browser tries to get the image <img src="site.com/image.jpg"> it's just redirected back to the index.php. I can change settings for the router (running dd-wrt) and the webserver (apache2 and php 5.2). Is there a solution that allows content to be edited before returning to the client, and allows css and images to be accessed?

What's the best way to take a user's search phrase and throw it into a CONTAINSTABLE(table, column, @phrase, topN ) phrase? Say, for example the user inputs: Books by "Dr. Seuss" What's the best way to turn that into something that will return results in my ContainsTAble() phrase? I was previously parsing the search phrase and writing something like ISABOUT("Books" WEIGHT(1.0), "by" WEIGHT(0.9), "Dr. Seuss" WEIGHT(0.8)) as my @phrase but ISABOUT seems to be returning odd results... especially when one word searches are entered. Any Ideas?

• UIView Animation: PartialCurl ...bug during rotate?

  Hello all, a short question. I've created an app for the iPad, much like a utility app for the iPhone (one mainView, one flipSideView). The animation between them is UIModalTransitionStylePartialCurl. shouldAutorotateToInterfaceOrientation is returning YES. If I rotate the device BEFORE entering the FlipSide, everything is okay and the PartialCurl is displayed okay. But if I enter the FlipSide and then rotate the device, while the UIElements do rotate and position themselves just fine, the actual "page curl" stays with its initial orientation. it just won't budge :) Is it a known issue? am I doing something wrong? • MySQL query returns different set of results on two identical databases

  I exported a live MySQL database (running mysql 5.0.45) to a local copy (running mysql 5.1.33) with no errors upon import. There is a view in the database, that when executed locally, returns a different set of data than when executed remotely. It's returning 32 results instead of 63. When I execute the raw sql, the same problem occurs. I've inspected the data in all tables being joined, and the counts are the same. The query is simple and has no where conditions - but about 10 joins. Aside from the differences in mysql versions... I can't find any reason that this query would return different results between databases... since they are effectively exact copies. Has anyone experienced a problem like this before?

  Hello all! I'm trying to avoid an app crash here... I have a button that will remove a segment from a UISegmentedControl. If that button is pressed and the user has the segment to be removed selected, the segment will remove and no selection will be highlighted. However, when another button is pushed that does an action that retrieves the selectedSegmentIndex, the app crashes. In short: Is there any way to force the selection of a segment in a UISegmentedControl? edit it seems as though the UISegmentedControl is returning a selectedSegmentIndex of -1 when no segment is selected... let's see what I can do from here.

  Hi All I've just started a new job and noticed that the analysts computers are connected to the network at 100Mbps. The queries we run against the MySQL server can easily be 500MB+ and it seems at times when the servers are under high load the DBAs kill low priority jobs as they are taking too long to run. My question is this... How much of this server time is spent executing the request, and how much time is spent returning the data to the client? Could the query speeds be improved by upgrading the network connections to 1Gbps? Thanks Rob

• Java update/install via group policy

  I trying to deploy the latest Java RE version via GP, Java 7 update 9. I want to update computers that are currently running an older version of Java, a mixture of 7.6 and 7.7, some computers are running versions as old as 6.31. Some are running a mixture of both. I would also like this GP to install Java if it's not installed. Previously I used push out Java updates to users machines as Java didn't remove the old version. So when it was done the user would restart their browser or pc to start using the latest version. Not the best way to manage it as it leaves the old version installed but it worked. I've created group policies before for printer deployment, log on drive mapping scripts, but never software deployment. I've extracted the Java MSI and created a transform file to suppress reboot etc using orca. As described on this site http://ivan.dretvic.com/2011/06/how-to-package-and-deploy-java-jre-1-6-0_26-via-group-policy/. I have also tried saving the edited MSI directly and that didn't work either. But it just won't deploy. I have tried to enable logging as suggested on this site http://openofficetechnology.com/node/32, GPO logging via UserEnvDebugLevel, Software deployment logging via AppmgmtDebugLevel and MSI logging, but there is no log C:\Windows\Debug\UserMode\userenv.log being created. • UIScrollview setContentOffset immediate animation?

  Is there anyway to get the setContentOffset animation to happen immediately instead of waiting until the app returns to the main run loop? I tried setting the animation property to NO and nesting inside of an animation block but it still waits until returning to the main run loop. I've also tried using a sub method to perform the animation. My problem is I perform some heavy work after setting the contentOffset so the scroll view waits until this work is complete to animate the setting of the content offset so it appears to lag for a second.
