  • Please advise on VPS config choice (with SQL Server Express)

    Hi all, I might be interested in getting a VPS hosting plan for some small personal sites and .NET projects. Was thinking of Softsys Bronze Plan, as my current shared host plan is with them too. The stuff I want to host has grown beyond the capabilities of a Shared hosting plan, and I also want more control over the IIS/ASP.NET configuration, that's why I'm considering VPS. The main config details would be: Hyper-V 30 GB of diskspace 1 GB of RAM More info here: http://www.softsyshosting.com/Windows-VPS-HyperV.aspx Does anyone have experience with this plan (or something similar from another host), and maybe could answer these couple of questions: Bronze has a total diskspace of 30GB. Is the OS part of this quota or not ? If so, how much does a base configuration with Windows 2008 take up in diskspace ? Would you advise Windows 2008 R2 or Normal. Or would you advise to use Windows 2003 with this config. I'm planning on running a SQL Server Express install too. Would 1 GB of RAM be enough for both the Windows 2008 (R2) and SQL Express. The database load will not be that very high (a couple of 1000 records returned each day). The DB will most likely be far away from the 4GB limit, that's why I'd go for a SQL Express instead of paying extra licensing costs for a SQL Web install. But I'm more concerned about performance. Would you recommend Softsys as a VPS host ? I've been with them for one year for my Shared hosting plan, and have no complaints so far. Also, as I have no VPS experience, what are the pitfalls I need to be aware of, in terms of performance mainly, but maybe in other areas too ? Mathieu

    In our active directory we deploy a policy to our clients where the personal directory (My documents) is redirected to a file server of ours \server\share\username\Documents In older systems everything worked fine. in Windows 7 some users are experimenting the following symptoms: The Documents library is EMPTY Where the documents library should be shown in Explorer an empty white icon is displayed. No caption. Right clicking in the Documents library to edit the folders that are part of the libraries brings the dialog up. However, that dialog is unusable. No folder is present there and clicking Add folder does nothing. Deleting the library and auto-creating it doesn't solve the problem The shared directory can be accessed via UNC paths and it can be mounted as a shared drive as well. The library is still broken. The shared drives are on a W2008 indexed server... Using the Windows Library tool utility doesn't solve the problem. What can the cause of this problem be and how can this be solved?

  • Password-protected sharing allows access to users who have no account?

    Running Win7 on two computers in my LAN. Computer A has password-protected sharing enabled, and shares a folder. It has a single user account "Bob", and the Guest account is turned off. The network is workgroup-based. According to the descriptions of the "password-protected sharing" I could find, the only people who can access the shared folder via the LAN are those who know the username+password for the "Bob" account. However a second computer on the LAN is able to view this shared folder by simply browsing to Computer A. They don't need to enter any passwords or anything. The only user account registered on that PC is called "Jim", and has a different password from "Bob". How on earth is computer B able to view this shared folder? Is the popular description of the "password-protected sharing" feature inaccurate / did I misunderstand it big time? P.S. There is a possibility that the password for "Bob" has been entered on that PC once, and possibly the "remember password" box was checked. I've looked in the "Credential Manager" on both computers and there is nothing saved anywhere.

    What is the process that you guys follow to maintain authentication details like login ids and passwords? There will be definitely some shared passwords. So, the target is to minimize the impact when someone is leaving the company. By "shared password", I mean, the account, which is shared among multiple people in the company. The issues that the process should address are: - Affected areas. Quickly find the resources to which the leaving user was having access to. Forgetting password. What happens if a user forgets an authentication details? How does he get it? I think he shouldn't ask a team mate. I mean no-verbal communication. Find dependencies of a resource. Suppose I am changing the password for a mail account, which is getting used by some automated scripts to send mails. Here, the scripts are dependent on the mail account, so changing the password of the mail account means we have to change the password in the script too. So, how do find all the dependencies of a resource? I'd prefer a process which addresses these issues. But you can also recommend products which are open source and not hosted. I have gone through PassPack, but they don't solve #4. There is a similar question here. But that does not exactly answer my question.

  • Some guest networking and VMware Tools functionality broken with Sprint SmartView on the host

    Using VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on Vista 64-bit. I started having problems with VMware networking about 6 months ago after upgrades to Sprint SmartView. I did not have problems previously, but I don't know if that is because I was lucky. The main symptoms of the problem when SmartView is installed are: I can no longer drag files from the host to copy them to the guest. When they are dragged, the disallowed cursor (the circle with a slash) shows in the guest. If I try to enable shared folders in the guest while it is running, I will not be able to see the shared files and will be informed that networking is not working. I can still ping guests from the host and I can still access network services via NAT most of the time when connected via my USB broadband adapter. When I configure shared folders so they are "always enabled" (with a mapped drive), I can access files on the via the mapped folders. I can also copy the file on the host and then paste it in the guest, as was suggested in some other threads concerning drag-and-drop problems that I found. The VMware Tools icon is showing in all cases and I don't see any obvious errors in the host's event viewer. If I uninstall SmartView, the problems disappear. If SmartView (current version is 2.28.0082) is reinstalled I will experience the same problems. I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling VMware and SmartView in various ways but it appears tha these problems are consistent when SmartView is installed (not just when it is running or connected, but when it is present on the system). I'm wondering if this is a combination of software (WS 6.5.3, Vista64, and SmartView) that works for other people, which would indicate a problem that is peculiar to my configuration.

  • Probability of Blade Chassis Failure

    In my organisation we are thinking about buying blade servers - instead of rack servers. Of course technology vendors also make them sound very nice. A concern, that I read very often in different forums, is, that there is a theoretical possibility of the server chassis going down - which would in consequence take all the blades down. That is due to shared infrastructure. My reaction on this probability would be to have redundancy and by two chassis instead of one (very costly of course). Some people (including e.g. HP Vendors) try to convince us, that the chassis is very very unlikely to fail, due to many redundancies (redundant power supply, etc.). Another concern on my side is, that if something goes down, spare parts might be required - which is difficult in our location (Ethiopia). So I would ask to experienced administrators, that have managed blade server: What is your experience? Do they go down as a whole - and what is the sensible shared infrastructure, that might fail? That question could be extended to shared storage. Again I would say, that we need two storage units instead of only one - and again the vendors say, that this things are so rock solid, that no failure is expected. Well - I can hardly believe, that such a critical infrastructure can be very reliable without redundancy - but maybe you can tell me, whether you have successfull blade-based projects, that work without redundancy in its core parts (chassis, storage...)   • Apache22 on FreeBSD - Starts, does not respond to requests

    Hey folks! I'm running Apache 2.2.17 with the peruser MPM on FreeBSD 8.2-RC1 on Amazon's EC2 (so it's XEN). It was installed from ports. My problem is that, although Apache is running, listening for, and accepting connections, it doesn't actually respond to any or show them in the log at all. If I telnet to the port it's listening on and type out an HTTP request: GET / HTTP/1.1 Host: asdfasdf And hit enter a couple of times, it just sits there... Nothing. No response requesting with a browser either. There doesn't appear to be anything helpful in the error log: [Sun Jan 09 16:56:24 2011] [warn] Init: Session Cache is not configured [hint: SSLSessionCache] [Sun Jan 09 16:56:25 2011] [notice] Digest: generating secret for digest authentication ... I also tried uninstalling apache22-peruser-mpm and just installing straight apache22... Still no luck. I tried removing all of the LoadModule lines from httpd.conf and just re-enabled the ones that were necessary to parse the config. Ended up with only the following loaded: root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# /usr/local/sbin/apachectl -M Loaded Modules: core_module (static) mpm_peruser_module (static) http_module (static) so_module (static) authz_host_module (shared) log_config_module (shared) alias_module (shared) Syntax OK root:/usr/local/etc/apache22# Same results.   • Encrypted WiFi with no password?

    Is there any standard that allows a WiFi connection to be encrypted, but not require a password? i know that (old, weak) WEP, and newer WPA/WPA2 require a password (i.e. shared secret). Meanwhile my own wireless connections are "open", and therefore unencrypted. There is no technical reason why i can't have an encrypted link that doesn't require the user to enter any password. Such technology exists today (see public key encryption and HTTPS). But does such a standard exist for WiFi? Note: i only want to protect communications, not limit internet access. i get the sense that no such standard exists (since i'm pretty capable with Google), but i'd like it confirmed. Claraification: i want to protect communcations, not limit internet access. That means users are not required to have a password (or its moral equivalent). This means users are not required: to know a password to know a passphrase to enter a CAPTCHA to draw a secret to have a key fob to know a PIN to use a pre-shared key have a pre-shared file to possess a certificate In other words: it has the same accessibility as before, but is now encrypted.

  • SVN client too old after I used sshfs

    I have a svn checked out web application on a shared hosting linux server. The linux server has an svn client that I can access via ssh. From my localhost, I did the following > sshfs [email protected]:webappdir/ /media/webapp > cd /media/webapp > svn update svn: Working copy '.' locked svn: run 'svn cleanup' to remove locks (type 'svn help cleanup' for details) > svn clean up It's been 15 minutes and the svn clean up still isn't finished. I think it may have froze. So then I did the following: > ssh [email protected] > cd webappdir > svn update svn: This client is too old to work with working copy '.'; please get a newer Subversion client So now I can't update my webappdir because my /media/webapp is stuck on svn clean up, and my shared hosting server's svn client is out of date. I don't have privileges to install a new svn client on the shared hosting server. How do I get my svn update to work?

    At the server I installed openldap-server, at this computer open-ldap client has already been installed. Version of openldap-client (2.4.16) was older then new openldap-server (2.4.21) and the version of client has updated too. OpenLDAP-client works with postfix on this server and after all updates postfix cann't start again. The error when postfix stop|start is: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libldap-2.4.so.6" not found, required by "postfix" At the category with libraries is libldap-2.4.so.7, but libldap-2.4.so.6 is removed from the server. When I want to deinstall curently version of openldap-client, system write ===> Deinstalling for net/openldap24-client O.K., but when I start "make install" system write: ===> Installing for openldap-sasl-client-2.4.23 ===> openldap-sasl-client-2.4.23 depends on shared library: sasl2.2 - found ===> Generating temporary packing list ===> Checking if net/openldap24-client already installed ===> An older version of net/openldap24-client is already installed (openldap-client-2.4.21) You may wish to ``make deinstall'' and install this port again by ``make reinstall'' to upgrade it properly.     When I type in admin console command to start hostednetwork netsh wlan start hostednetwork it gives me this: The hosted network couldn't be started. The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation. There is a hotfix from Microsoft but it didn't help me. Any advice?   • Windows 8 install app for multiple user accounts

    I purchased Adera episode 2 intending to play through it with my son. We each have our own user account on the same PC. When my son logged in, he was prompted to purchase the app which I had already purchased, installed, and played on the same PC. So I checked the Terms of Use. After selecting an app in the store, there is a Terms of Use link on the left side under the Install button. It is almost impossible to identify it as a link unless you put your mouse over it. The Terms of Use are standard across all apps in the store, not specific to particular apps. The terms of use indicates that the app may be installed on up to five devices, but says nothing about multiple user accounts on those devices. However, this Microsoft blog article indicates that it is allowed. Say, for example, that your family has a shared PC. You have previously used your Microsoft account to purchase a game that all your kids like to play. You can install it for each of your kids by having each of them sign in to their Windows accounts on the shared PC, then launch the Store and sign in to the Store using your own Microsoft account. There, you’ll see all your apps and you can re-install the app on your kid’s Windows account. Installing apps on multiple user accounts on a shared PC still only counts as one of the five allowable PCs where you can install apps. So I have two questions: Is it permissible under the Terms of Use to install the app under multiple accounts on the same device? If so, how do I do so given that my son has already signed into the store using his own Microsoft account.

  • iptables: How to combine DNAT and SNAT to use a secondary IP address?

    There are lots of questions on here about iptables DNAT/SNAT setups but I haven't found one that solves my current problem. I have services bound to the IP address of eth0 (e.g. 192.168.0.20) and I also have a IP address on eth0:0 (192.168.0.40) which is shared with another server. Only one server is active, so this alias interface comes and goes depending on which server is active. In order to get traffic accepted by the service a DNAT rule is used to change the destination IP. iptables -t nat -A PREROUTING -d 192.168.0.40 -p udp --dport 7100 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.0.20 I also wish all outbound traffic from this service to appear to come from the shared IP, so that return responses will work in the event of a active-standby failover. iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -p udp --sport 7100 -j SNAT --to-source 192.168.0.40 My problem is that the SNAT rule is not always run. Inbound traffic causes a connection tracking entry like this. [root]# conntrack -L -p udp udp 17 170 src=192.168.0.185 dst=192.168.0.40 sport=7100 dport=7100 src=192.168.0.20 dst=192.168.0.185 sport=7100 dport=7100 [ASSURED] mark=0 secmark=0 use=2 which means the POSTROUTING chain is not run and outbound traffic leaves with the real IP address as the source. I am thinking I can set up a NOTRACK rule in the raw table to prevent conntracking for this port number, but is there a better or more efficient way to make this work? Edit - Alternative question: Is there a way (in CentOS/Linux) to have an interface that can be bound to but not used, such that it can be attached to the network or detached when a shared IP address is swapped between servers?

    These are my VM setup: HOST: windows 7 ultimate 32bit GUEST: CentOs 6.3 i386 Virtualization soft: Oracle virtualBox 4.1.22 Networking: NAT -> (PORT FORWARD: HOST:8080 => GUEST:80) Shared Folder: centos all the project files goes into shared folder and for each project file a virtualhost conf file is created in /etc/httpd/conf.d/ like /etc/httpd/conf.d/$domain I wasn't able to see anything in my browser before disabling both windows firewall and iptables in centos after that if i type for example: http://www.$domain:8080/ all i see is: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server.   • Microsoft Server 2003 Explorer shows duplicate local shares

    Hi folks, I am new here and I could really use some advice please. I am having a problem with our file server. When I try to browse the shared folders using explorer, several of the shared folders all appear to have the same name. Whenever I attempt to rename one of the affected folders, all the affected folders name also change. Our File Server is Windows Server 2003 R2. I am logged on directly to the server using remote desktop. When I open the folder all is as it should be, the proper content is there and the address bar displays the correct folder name and path. The share names are correct, so everything that needs to access the shared folder/files can do so. Also when I browse to the folder using the command-line all it as it should be there too. The only issue seems to be the incorrect display name when browsing using explorer. Can anyone offer any advice or help as to how to resolve this issue please? It would be most appreciated. Thanks

  • Custom ViewEngine problem with ASP.NET MVC

    In this question jfar answered with his solution the problem is it does not work for me. In the method FindView() I have to somehow check if the View we are requesting is a ViewUserControl. Because otherwise I get an error saying: "A master name cannot be specified when the view is a ViewUserControl."     But it clearly does not fail on my system. The Verification test in XCode during the submission should (I assume) test this. And running codesign on the command line of the archived app results in: /Users/iac/Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Archived Applications/272860A0-961E-47E7-B62F-0F7D373D938A.apparchive/Kiwi.app: valid on disk /Users/iac/Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Archived Applications/272860A0-961E-47E7-B62F-0F7D373D938A.apparchive/Kiwi.app: satisfies its Designated Requirement Anyone run into something like this before?   • Is it possible to attach a debugging session to a running program in eclipse CDT

    I'm writing a netscape iplanet plugin (on solaris/C using eclipse) which is basically a shared object with specific entry points, and I'd like to be able to debug the shared object with eclipse's debugger (gdb). I remember doing something similar in AIX where you could make xldb attach to a running process. Is it possible to get eclipse to run gdb to attach to a running binary? And should I expect grief because I want to debug a dynamically loaded piece of code?
