We're considering building a ~16TB storage server. At the moment, we're considering both ZFS and XFS as filesystem. What are the advantages, disadvantages? What do we have to look for? Is there a third, better option?
I've recently repurposed an old machine that I had laying around (custom built several years ago with miscellaneous parts) as a simple media center with an Ubuntu 8.10 operating system and Boxee as its front end, and I absolutely love it. I'm particularly intrigued by the custom applications that are possible, and I wanted to start a running list of recommended apps for it.
So, my question is this: what Boxee apps do you recommend, and why? One app per answer, please.
My BlackBerry Bold (9000) auto-reboots approximately daily, generally while I am listening to podcasts that have been saved to my add-in memory card. Neither the built-in card nor my add-in card are full. An OS update had no effect. I am using the default media player.
Has anyone else experienced this or does anyone know how to fix this problem?
I do a lot of work on my home computer, ranging from programming, writing stored procedures and writing documentation and reporting. A lot of this work is university related and constantly swapping files across several computers is annoying at best.
I have a large final-year project coming up and I'm going to be sharing this work amongst home and university and require some kind of online storage that provides version control for my programs, as well as my Word documents, PDF's and saved academic papers.
Are there any good solutions for my problem?
I've seen this happen on 2 different HP laptops now. If I try to use them in the same room as a Media Center, the MCE TV remote keeps sending commands to the laptop. This can do anything from wake it up and turn it on to just moving the selection around.
There is no obvious way to disable the IR sensor or at least its response to the remote. Does anyone know how to do this?
I'm curious about how playlists work, whether they be on a Zune or a PC, such as Windows Media Player or the Zune Software... When a playlist is created, is a copy of the song made? eg, the playlist has it's "own" copy of the songs in the playlist? OR, does it just "bookmark" where each song in its list is, and play it from there? Thanks!
I want to start something like a personal TuneWiki on my computer. I'm using Windows and have a lot of MP3s.
Now I want to add lyrics to them for personal use. I tried Windows Media Player but it is bit a hard to synchronize all of the text with the song time.
Are there other tools or players for adding lyrics so that when I start to play a song the streaming text will be synchronized with the beat?
hi,
whats the main difference between hosting in Google through Google App Engine than hosting websites in 'normal' web hosting provider(e.g.http://webhostingworld.net/plans.php) ?
hosting in webhostingworld.net looks much cheaper (unlimited storage, bandwidth, 99.9%uptime)..so what gives ?
Many thanks
I have 50,000 high resolution JPEG photos, where a couple of them might occasionally be needed, about once a year.
I wanted to zip them to save disk space, except that zipping gives no space benefit - so trying to reduce the images disk usage using winzip, winrar or 7zip was not successful.
Is there any software or algorithm similar to zip to compress image size on hard disk for storage without loosing any image information?
I have a bunch of media files which I want to record to DVD, but since each DVD only fits 4.5GB, I have to find the optimal way to organize the files to use the minimum number of DVDs (otherwise the empty space left in each DVD can easily add up). Are there any tools to help with this?
Many years ago there was a DOS utility to do this with floppy disks.
Hi everyone!
Does anyone knows a media streaming server solution for streaming video/audio with automatic quality(depending on the client bandwidth).
Thanks in advance!
Hello,
I was a bit surprised when I purchased a VPS with 15GB of storage to find that am left with very little space after Windows' 13GB footprint. I can't even install SQL Server.
Tech support is saying this is normal. I know that if they felt like it they could remove Windows from the quota or adjust it accordingly.
Is this a common practice or should I further pursue the issue with customer service?
My friend created some .mov files with his mac. Now I'm trying to play them in my Windows 7 machine with Windows Media Player and I only see sound but not image. There must be an encoding issue. But how do I find out what encoder I need?
What is the best method to rip/encode a standard definition DVD, to be streamed to a Xbox360 from a Vista Media Center pc (preferably using free software). I’ve found tons of tutorials on the web explaining how to create wmv’s from vob files using FFMpeg, but every combination of settings that I have tried has resulted in very poor video quality. I’ve also tried various video conmversion tools, but everything seems to result in poor video quality, or audio that is out of sync with the picture. Please help!
Hi there
i just find that is useful to listen audio books, but when it is about tacking notices, the play/pause, adding bookmarks is impossible with the regular players(windows media player, vlc, bsplayer, winamp). Do you know a better alternative to that?
How can I play Blu-Ray movies via Windows Media Centre on Windows 8? If I choose the "play dvd" option, I get an error:
Cannot Play Disc
To play this DVD, you must first install a playback application that supports Blu-ray Disc.
[ OK ]
However, I have got the HP MediaSmart application installed, which does work (although it's "less than awesome"), so I'm confused why I get this warning?
I'm using a TV to USB capture thingy called Hauppauge USB-Live2 (http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_usblive2.html) and I'm using Media Player Classic Home Cinema to view my device's output, and finally I'm using Fraps to record the output off of MPC. It all works nicely except I can't get my mic to record, or even show up in the "Record External Input" area of Fraps while my Hauppauge is plugged in.
My question is: How can I select my mic as the "record external input" in fraps?

My audiobooks are in mp3 format. Each chapter is a file. Sometimes I will stop playing in the middle of a file. When I click on the file again I want to continue where I left off.
That's what my ipod touch does. But for Windows, are there any programs that can do that?
My IT department has a bunch of older 160/320GB Drives. I'd like to use them in a build-your-own NAS device. What limitations exist in regards to the maximum number of drives that can be connected to typical commodity hardware that might be used in a situation like this?
EDIT
okay I like to specify my question is
what to search for to find a storage controller which can handle many drives. I simply cannot find the right search terms.
When I was still on Windows XP, I used ffdshow to take care of all my video and audio codecs needs (with fully customizable subtitles). I did not need any other video player except Windows Media Player.
Is there an ffdshow equivalent for the Mac? The objective is the same: that I shouldn't have to install any other video player, not even VLC, or the trial-bloatware-ridden DivX. I'm on Snow Leopard.
I am currently using Screamer Radio but it is a little bit buggy. It freezes a lot if internet connection is bad and can not continue if there are interruptions in the internet connection.
I am not interested in some full sized MP3/media player, just a simple (with low memory footprint) application that can play streaming internet radio stations.
I've just made the switch to Ubuntu on my main PC and I've been looking for a media player that can:
Play all the usual video formats
Rate (and ideally, tag) each file
Display thumbnails for each file
Other than that there isn't much I'm after.
Banshee comes close, but doesn't display thumbnails.
I've Google'd lots but I'm running out of search terms to try.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
Cheers!
We have a monitoring tool called SCOM which mainly monitors different OS related services .However, we being part of storage team would also like some of our services to be monitored.
We have HP NAS , and I am wondering what all services I can ask the other team to monitor for us and alert us if something goes wrong.
The same goes with celerra and centera what important services can be monitored .I did search but to no avail.I ‘m not finding any of the useful services..Any help in this regard is greatly appreaciated
thanks!
