• How to configure Unity/Compiz in 12.04 so that Update Manager opens maximized w/screen bigger than 1024×600?

  In Precise, window auto-maximize is disabled on monitors with a resolution above 1024 × 600 [1]. I have a bigger resolution, but I prefer maximized windows anyway. I want Update Manager to start maximized. What I've tried so far: In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have Place Windows activated and 'Windows with fixed placement mode' has windows matching the rule "(name=gnome-terminal) | (name=update-manager)" set to 'Maximize'. With this, Gnome Terminal starts maximized, Update Manager does not. In Compiz Config Settings Manager, I have set a Window Rules [2] rule to match "name=update-manager". Irregardless of any rules set or not, activating Window Rules results in not being able to bring out Unity Launcher anymore, Alt+Tab window switching becoming slow or nonfunctional entirely and the screen sporadically freezing completely. Not a viable option apparently. I've installed Maximus [3] and started it. Update Manager ignores it (or vice versa). I've not tried devilspie and would prefer not to. Having to configure something external for this would seem stupidly redundant with (the no-brainer) Maximus and all these Compiz options already available. I just can't seem to make them work. • Exporting 3DS Max animated biped character into Assimp

  I've been having some trouble with MD5 meshes exported from 3DS Max into my C++ program, using Assimp to import the model and its skeletal animation. If the models were rigged manually with bones, the export and animations work perfectly, but if they were rigged as a biped character, the animation hits a "deadly import error" and all the bones appear to get smooshed together into a big pile. This seems like it might just be a limitation of the MD5 exporter (we're currently using the one found here. Our plan is to try out a different MD5 exporter (this one), and if that still has problems, then try switching from MD5 to COLLADA. Our modeler won't be able to make time to try out these other exporters for a few days, so in the meantime I wanted to see if there were any better methods out there for getting biped rigged models from 3DS Max into our app via Assimp. Out of Assimp's supported formats, I need to figure out which will support the following: Skeletal animations Exportable from 3DS Max biped rigged models Failing that, an alternative would be a way to convert a biped character to its corresponding bones before exporting. We did find one script to do that, but it only seems meant as a starting point for modeling -- it doesn't carry over any hierarchy, skinning, or animation -- so it can't be used solely during export.

• Google Apps email hosting for a GoDaddy-hosted site works locally but not on live site

  GoDaddy email issues are plentiful, but I have not been able to find anyone resolve this same problem: I have a GoDaddy hosted site, and a Google Apps account. The MX info on GoDaddy is correct, as is my server-side code, and the Google Apps credentials in my web.config file (host:smtp.gmail.com, port:587) are correct. I know this because I am able to send emails through SmtpClient hosted my local machine's server when debugging the site. However, once transferred to the GoDaddy hosting account, all emails will not send -- they just time out. Nothing has changed aside from the site being run on the GoDaddy server as opposed to a local server. EDIT - SSL is enabled. A two part question: 1) Does anybody have any ideas about how to tackle this? 2) If not, is there another web hosting or email hosting site, or a combination of 2, that people can confirm is fast, actually works, and is not impossible to coordinate as is everything with GoDaddy? (I am aware that GoDaddy has their own relaying email server, but I initially used it before switching to Google and found emails coming in 30-60 minutes late).

• BizTalk 2010 upgrade - Sunset Development/Deployment Modes

  Those who are familiar with BizTalk 2006, should know about Development and Deployment modes in Visual Studio. Personally, I never questioned why it's not Debug and Release just like everything else in Visual Studio. Then everything changed in BizTalk 2010. BizTalk and Visual Studio 2010 now uses Debug and Release modes by default. When we upgraded BizTalk 2006 solution to 2010, Development and Deployment modes remained unchanged for all the projects, and code compiled without any issues. Soon, I realized that any new projects added to the converted solutions started using Debug and Release modes. This also didn't cause any problem compiling the solution from Visual Studio; however, it broke our custom build/deployment scripts since the scripts were trying to build in Deployment mode. So, I decided to change all projects from Development and Deployment modes to Debug and Release modes to keep them consistent. During this process I realized that Debug and Release modes are defaults; but it's completely customizable. During the BizTalk 2010 upgrade process, I figured that switching to default Debug and Release modes are the best options.

• How to port email from evolution to thunderbird?

  I updated ubuntu to 11.10 using the update notification. I am also switching from Xubuntu to ubuntu - gnome interface. I have been using evolution for years and would like to port the emails to thunderbird. I have looked at the similar questions with no luck and the thunderbird help on manually importing. Most of these assume that the evolution file structure is similar to the evolution file structure. When I set up thunderbird it seems to have imported the contacts from evolution (and actually removed them from evolution. However no mail got transferred. I found the evolution mail in ~/.local/share/evolution/mail/local . this has folders.db and 3 directories - cur ,tmp, and new. then there are the hidden files and directories. Each directory has three related files with extensions .cmeta, .ibex.index, and .ibex.index.data. Then all the directories had files that seem to contain the individual messages. I have not looked at rhyme or reason to the file numbering/naming scheme. is there a nice way to import these files?

• Cannot apply unity --reset after modifying files

  So I have an idea of what I did wrong, I am just not sure how to fix it.   We all start somewhere when it is about database. There are different reasons, why we go for one database over another database. Usually the reason is cost and convenience. • Internet suddenly stopped working

  I was using NoMachine to access Ubuntu 11.10 when suddenly the internet on Ubuntu stopped working. Now Ubuntu doesn't recognize the internet at all (including locally). Symptoms: Doesn't recognize the fact that there is an ethernet cable attached. (I've tried switching cables, didn't work.) GUI says "No network devices available" Can't ping external IP addresses. Tried changing /etc/network/interfaces to eth1 instead of eth0 but it didn't work. ifconfig provides no output relating to eth0. When I type "/etc/init.d/networking restart" it tells me "Cannot find device 'eth0'/Failed to bring up eth0." The network settings had used a static IP address prior to the crash. I don't know why it won't recognize the ethernet (I think this is the fundamental problem, but I might be wrong) and why it stopped working so suddenly--I haven't installed any updates lately. Any ideas? Any more information I should provide? EDIT: lspci recognizes the Ethernet controller; netstat does not. lspci calls it "Intel Corporation Device 0000"

• resolv.conf doesn't get set on reboot when networking is configured for static ip

  I'm experiencing, what appears to be a hostname resolution issue in ubuntu 12.04 server edition when configuring my computer to use a static ip. In /etc/network/interfaces: # The primary network interface auto eth0 iface eth0 inet static address 192.168.1.28 netmask 255.255.255.0 gateway 192.168.1.1 Running $ sudo apt-get upgrade, results in a 'Failed to fetch...': . . . W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en_US Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) W: Failed to fetch http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/precise-backports/universe/i18n/Translation-en Something wicked happened resolving 'us.archive.ubuntu.com:http' (-5 - No address associated with hostname) E: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead. When I change my /etc/network/interfaces to: auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp Everything works fine. Looking into /etc/resolv.conf provides some more hints...In cases where I was getting the resolving issue, resolve.conf was empty. No nameservers were specified. When I changed to dhcp from static and restarted networking. /etc/resolv.conf gets written to: 'nameserver 192.168.1.1'. Switching back from dhcp to static and restarting doesn't remove the nameserve entry. When I restart the system with static set, resolv.conf is empty. When I restart the system with dhcp set, resolv.conf has nameserver 192.168.1.1. So it appears that the issue is that resolve.conf is not getting written to correctly? Which package/code is responsible for writing to resolv.conf? Is there a particular package that I can take a look at open issues? • How to deal with OpenGL and Fullscreen on OS X

  I do most of my development on OS X and for my current game project this is my target environment. However when I play games I play on Windows. As a windows gamer I am used to Alt+Tab switching from within the game to the last application that was open. On OS X I currently can't find either a game that supports that nor can I find a way to make it possible. My current project is based on SDL 1.3 and I can see that cmd+tab is a sequence that is sent directly to my application and not intercepted by the operating system. Now my first attempt was to hide the rendering window on cmd+tab which certainly works, but has the disadvantage that a hidden OpenGL window in SDL cannot be restored when the user tabs back to the application. First of all, there is no event fired for that or I can't find it, secondly the core problem is that when that application window is hidden, my game is still the active application, just that the window disappeared. That is incredible annoying. Any ideas how to approximate the windows / linux behavior for alt+tab?

• Moving from Test Automation to Development

  I'm in an interesting quandary. I've been doing test automation using QTP for about 1.5 years, and am in the slow process of switching to a developer role in my same company. I also begin my Master's in CS this fall. An old friend is trying to recruit me for a Sr. Test Automation position that could potentially pay me $23k more for the exact same thing I do now. But obviously I would defer moving to development. The new company is much more technical overall (I would be moving from financial services to industrial automation, and they have MANY more software dev roles available. I know traditionally QA type jobs carry an odd "danger" tag, but test automation is really a different beast. Does anyone have any experience moving from test automation to development? Does the QA stigma exist? The extra $$ would be nice, but not at the expense of my career. I should note that my Master's will be on Systems/parallel programming, so one thought is that I'll get automatic consideraton for development upon completing my Master's. I also work 6hrs/wk doing game development with a friend.

• Handling multiple Scene in AndEngine

  I am Developing a game in AndEngine Gles2. I have splash scene, loading scene, menu scene and Level1 scene. I am using a Screen Manager to manage all scenes through which i can easily switch between splash, loading and menu scene, the level1 scene is also loaded from menu perfectly but problem occur when i go back to menu scene on the completion of level, screen turned to black and nothing shown after that. I think the problem is with unloading the resources of Level1 because the switching between other scene is perfect. I can't give complete code, as it is to much lengthy. I am using bitmapTexture region, Sprites, bodies, physics Word, hud and fixtures etc. here is my unload method.. 1 more thing when i loaded the menu scene at the end of level 1 screen turn to black, but the music played and all logs are showed in logcat which i set in menu scene. unload(){ setChildrenIgnorUpdate(); clearChildScene(); clearEntityModifier(); clearTouchAreas(); clearUpdateHandler(); BitmapTextureManager.getInstance().destroyInstance(); destroyPhysics(); } Please Any help...

• Microphone - static background noise suppression

  My soundcard is Realtek ALC 892. On Windows 7 I use official Realtek drivers, on Linux I use PulseAudio (on Ubuntu 13.10). On both Windows and Linux, when I enable microphone boost +30db (required because my microphone is quiet), I get very annoying and loud background noise (I also confirmed the background noise with Audacity on both systems). However, Windows Realtek drivers have noise suppression option which works (after enabling it, Audacity shows no background noise and my ears also confirm that there is no background noise). My question is how can I enable background noise suppression in ALSA/PulseAudio? Is there any module I can install or maybe there is a setting for it that can be enabled in config file? I can't find solution for it and this is the only thing that prevents me from switching to Linux completely - as I talk using microphone a lot and on Windows the Realtek software removes the background noise completely and PulseAudio doesn't remove it, which means the recorded voice on Linux is very bad. I know I could buy better soundcard and microphone, but as I said, Windows Realtek drivers remove the noise on software level in real time (ie no noise when talking on TeamSpeak3/Steam/whatever voip programme) so I hope that there is such option on Linux as well. Some things to keep in mind when using the extension are: You can easily adjust the width of the sidebar to suit your needs using the mouse (very nice!) • Ubuntu on Android for Samsung Galaxy note 2?

  This question is lengthy, I have to warn you. I'm generally a mac user. My setup currently consists of using mac osx and vmware (windows 7) to run one program that isn't compatible with osx or linux. This program can be run using crossover (wine) as well but it works better with vmware. I'm thinking of switching over to ubuntu as my main operating system on my computers and running vmware or crossover that way to access the program I need. No specific reason why, I guess I'm just sick of the apple/windows machine. I've always wanted to try linux so figure there is no better time than now. The point is I haven't used ubuntu yet so I don't know a lot about it. I was planning on buying the iphone 5 when I saw there is an app to setup ubuntu operating system on an android phone. I'm now thinking that this would be fantastic for me if I bought the samsung galaxy note 2 and was able to install ubuntu and either vmware or crossover to use my windows specific program for work right on my phone. The samsung galaxy note 2 has a 1.4 ghz processor and 2gb of ram which is enough to handle a modern operating system. My program does not need a lot of speed or memory to work. To be honest, the windows specific program I need would work fine on an old laptop running windows xp. My first question is if ubuntu for android is really the full operating system that lets you run programs just like a desktop pc? Is it super slow where it takes many minutes to load up ubuntu? I don't need blazing speeds, but I'd like something useable. My next question has to do with vmware or crossover. Is ubuntu for android capable of running these programs? I think it would be great to use the same operating system like ubuntu on my desktop, laptop, tablets, and phone. Thanks so much for all the help!!!

• Best way to convert existing project to be open source in GitHub

  I've been working on a personal closed source project for some time and would like to make it open source. I've never created my own open source project before so it will be a good learning experience. I have been using GitHub as source control, so once I've written some decent docs on how to use and develop for it etc, it should be as simple as switching the repo to be public right? I guess my main question is around licencing. I was thinking of going with Apache 2.0 licence just because it seems to be widely used. It requires the licence header to be attached to all the source files, but if I do that now then all the other commits in the past will have it missing. Does that mean some one could pull an earlier version and it wouldn't have a licence? Is it best to start a new repo with the initial commit containing all the code with licence headers? Or maybe is there some advanced Git functionality that allows me to apply the licence header to all existing commits some how? Cheers.

• The lifecycle of "cool"

  I've been thinking lately about how some programming projects/products become "cool," and in particular, how that trend can later reverse. Here are two examples that might better explain my context: Textmate Whenever someone asks about text editors on OS X, the answer on the SE sites is an automatic "Textmate!" But looked at objectively: Textmate 1.0 shipped October 2004 Textmate 1.5 shipped January 2006 Textmate 2 was announced February 2006 As of September 2010, the currently shipping version is 1.5.9 In all of 2010, there have been a total of three posts on the Textmate blog At what point (if ever) do Textmate fans start thinking about switching to another text editor? When it breaks after some future Apple update? When alpha geeks they respect start recommending something else? Or? jQuery Whenever a JavaScript-related question is asked on the SE sites, the knee-jerk response is "jQuery!" I've seen it happen even when the question itself only required a single line of JavaScript. Or when the question could be better answered by using CSS. Do the answerers understand they're suggesting a blowtorch to light a candle? That they're recommending adding 70K or so of code to do something trivial? Or is it a symptom of "When you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail"—that is, jQuery is all they know how to do, so that's their recommendation? And do they understand that while they may know jQuery well, that doesn't necessarily mean that they know JavaScript? Is there a way to explain that learning JavaScript would make them better jQuery programmers? My bigger-picture questions: Is this niche focus primarily a trait of programmers? How do you get programmers to not immediately jump to recommending their personal favorites? What can motivate programmers to review their initial selection criteria and possibly modify their choice? Your thoughts?

• I want to turn VB.Net Option Strict On

  I recently found out about strong typing in VB.Net (naturally it was on here, thanks!) and am deciding I should take another step toward being a better programmer. I went from vba macros - VB.Net, because I needed a program that I could automate and I never read anything about strong typing, so I kind of fell into the VB.Net default trap. Now I am looking to turn it on and sort out this whole type thing. I was hoping someone could direct me towards some resources to make this transistion as painless as possible. I have read around some and ctype seems to come up a lot, but past that I am at a bit of a loss. What are the benefits of switching? Is there more to it than just using ctype to cast things? I feel like there is a good article that I have failed to come across and any direction would be great. Would a good approach to be to rewrite a program that is written with option strict off and note differences?

• Reliable alert dialogs from the shell

  I'd like to have a message pop up in response to various system events, mostly in order to be able to set reminders for myself from a shell session. There are a few ways to do this; zenity seems to be the most polished. However, I've found at least two problems with zenity: Messages do not appear on all workspaces. I tried using the gtk option --screen to control this, but they just appear on the current workspace regardless. So if I am switching workspaces as the message comes up, I will not see it. Messages do not appear above all other windows. Specifically, if I am using guake, a new zenity message will appear below the guake window and I won't be able to see it. I tried a few other apps a while back. Both gmessage and xmessage exhibited problem 1; gmessage also exhibited problem 2. I did find that kalarm, which can be scripted from the command line, worked acceptably, but I'm trying to avoid running the KDE stack if possible, and would prefer something lightweight with zenity's versatility. It seems that it might be possible to arrange for these problems to be resolved by setting the WM_CLASS, but I'm in a bit over my head there. It might also be possible to make modifications to the window after it launches with a script, but again I'm not sure where to look for resources on that.
