  • Making file in user's homedir accessible from web/webserver

    Hi everybody, I have a txt-file one of my user's homedir which is regularly updated there by a script. I now want to be able to access (read) this file from the web. /home/user/folder/file.txt So what I tried now is to log in as root, go into my webservers httpdocs folder /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs and there I tried to create a symbolic link with ln -s /home/user/foler/file.txt /var/www/path/to/domain/httpdocs/file.txt But this didn't work... I already tried changing the chmod of the symlink (which changes the ones from the original file of course) and also a chown to the user from webserver, but no matter what I tried I cannot open the file from the web or from a php-script (which is what I want to do) Can anybody help me and tell me what I need to do? What rights do I need to give? Or is there another way of achieving this?

    Want to allow a standard user account to run an application as administrator without a UAC or password prompt? You can easily create a shortcut that uses the runas command with the /savecred switch, which saves the password. Note that using /savecred could be considered a security hole – a standard user will be able to use the runas /savecred command to run any command as administrator without entering a password. However, it’s still useful for situations where this doesn’t matter much – perhaps you want to allow a child’s standard user account to run a game as Administrator without asking you. What I'm trying to figure out is: how I can tell which machine or domain user (either will do) is connected to a particular wall jack?

  • Symbolic Links Between User Accounts

    I have been using a cron job to duplicate a folder into another users account every day and someone suggested using symbolic links instead although I cannot get them to work. In summary user GAMER generates log files that they want to access via HTTP, however I only have a web-server in the user account SERVER, in the past I would copy the logs folder from GAMERS account into SERVER/public_html/. and then chmod the files so the server could access them. Trying to use symbolic links I set up a link from root (as only root can access both accounts) I used: ln -s /home/GAMER/game/logs/ /home/SERVER/public_html/logs However it seems that only root can use this link, I tried chmoding the link, all the files in the gamers /game/logs/*, /game/logs itself to 777 as well as changing chown and chgrp to server the files still cannot be read. When viewed from servers account my shell shows the link and where it is to hi-lighted in black with red text. Am I doing something wrong?   • iOS chat application design, sending/relaying the message over to the end user

    I have a design question. Let us say you were tasked with building a chat application, specifically for iOS (iOS Chat Application). For simplicity let us say you can only chat with one person at a time (no group chat functionality). How then can you achieve sending a message directly to an end user from phone A to phone B? Obviously there is a web service layer with some API calls. One of the API calls available will be startChat(). After starting a chat, when you send a message, you make another async call, let us call it sendMessage() and pass in a string with your message. Once it goes to the web service layer, the message gets stored in a database. Here is where I am currently stuck. After the message gets sent to the web service layer, how do we then achieve sending/relaying the message over to the end user? Should the web server send out a message to the end user and notify them, or should each client call a receiveMessage() method periodically, and if the server side has some info for them it can then respond with that info? Finally, how can we handle the case in which the user you are trying to send a message to is offline? How can we make sure the end user gets the packet when he moves back to an area with signal?

  • Exclude category from Wordpress home page unless it belongs to another category

    I have multiple users adding content to restricted categories (using RoleScoper) in my Wordpress setup that don't show up on the homepage (custom template with query_posts()). I'm looking for a way to "promote" the submitted content to the homepage by adding it to another category. My loop code looks like this: <?php query_posts($query_string . '&cat=-37'); if (have_posts()): while (have_posts()): the_post(); ?> This will exclude all posts in category 37. However, even if I add the post to a different category it still gets excluded. Is there a way to exclude a post if it belongs to just that one category?

  • Ubuntu 12.04, can't find my home wifi network

    I've tried several solutions I found on the web, but didn't manage to solve a problem. Since today my laptop won't find my WiFi network, but neighbours' networks are suggested. Another laptop with U12.04 does find one. What do I do?     I am maintaining a website that contains mostly simple html (just a little php). Normally the site receives only 4000 hits per month, but it was recently slashdotted by the New York Times (30,000 visitors and 30 GB in a day) and the web host provider (bluehost) throttled the CPU in response. This slowed down the website considerably. What web host providers would offer a more scalable solution? Ideally I would like a high-quality host that charges by the GB and can handle bandwidth to expand during sudden slashdotting episodes without a reduction in performance.

  • Sharing a wifi connection between different user profiles on Windows XP

    I've set-up two separate user profiles on an old laptop running Windows-XP, and noted the following strange behaviour. When the wireless network is setup using WEP both user profiles can connect to the internet and I can switch between user profiles, without network connectivity issues. However when I changed the wireless security to WPA2, the first user to connect gets access to the internet, when switching to the second profile the connection fails. The behaviour is the same regardless of which of the two profiles logs on first. I also tried this with one user with admin rights and one without, and got the same result. I'm not too concerned about a fix for this other than forcing the users to log-off when sharing the laptop, but I'd be interested to know if anyone can corroborate my findings. The network config was done using Intel® PROSet/Wireless.

  • How to serve media across home network?

    I'm looking to share my media across my home network. Router fully supports running a DLNA server, but I don't know if it'd be better to run the server from my main server computer instead of from the router, as the router would have to operate off of a network share and my server can operate directly off of the files. Here's what I need to serve, in order of importance: ISO 1:1 DVD rips (4-8GB files), MP4/H.264 encoded videos, MKV videos, MP3 files, JPEG/CR2 images. Maybe I'm completely ludicrous for wanting to push full DVD files across my network, but in reality, I would assume that only the parts of the actual file needed (ie: menu, main video payload for main title) would be served at any one time. Plus, encoding takes time and precious disk space, so why not stream it 1:1 ;) Does anyone know of the best way to accomplish this? Main goal is to serve it to Logitech Revue downstairs and secondary goal is to serve it to other computers in the house. For music, I assume I could run a DAAP server, but I don't think that the Revue supports that (and I can't exactly throw together an app that does it just yet).

  • How to use a home network patch panel?

    I'm planning a home network in a house that's not built yet. One recommendation is to add network sockets in various rooms and have them all end in a central place, where it all connects using a network switch. So far so good. Another recommendation says to not connect everything directly to the switch, but to a patch panel which in turn is connected to the switch. I'm unsure why this is good. Is there any practical advantage of using a patch panel if you're not planning to re-wire things very often? How does a patch panel actually work? Let's say it has 24 ports. Does it have another 24 ports on the backside that go to the switch, or what? Wikipedia isn't helpful on this. Clarification: I am planning to run network cables through conduits inside the walls and terminated with network sockets in the wall (as opposed to having just conduits and long regular network cables that have a normal plug in each end). Going by RedGrittyBrick's answer, a patch panel is nearly unavoidable in that case.

  • Configuring network route between two routers on home network

    I have a home network - the main router connected to the internet (and has wifi) is a Netopia box. Connected to it is a Linksys router. Everything currently works - I can connect via the wireless network and get to the internet. Machines connected to the Linksys can connect with each other and connect to the internet. Both routers are configured to serve addresses via DHCP (Netopia 192.168.1.1 - 192.168.1.99), Linksys (192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.100). Here's how they are connected: Internet <-> Netopia w/wifi (192.168.1.254) <-> Linksys (192.168.0.1) I decided I really need to allow wireless connections to also communicate with machines behind the Linksys router. Currently the Linksys is configured to obtain an IP address via DHCP. I thought this would be straightforward. I configured the Linksys to have a static IP address: IP: 192.168.1.100 Mask: 255.255.255.0 GW: 192.168.1.254 Then I configured a static route on the Netopia: Network: 192.168.0.0 Mask: 255.255.255.0 GW: 192.168.1.100 So it should now look like this: Internet <-> Netopia w/wifi (192.168.1.254) <-> (192.168.1.100) Linksys (192.168.0.1) I reset both routers. I cannot ping the Netopia (192.168.1.254) from inside the Linksys network, and if I attempt to ping 192.168.0.1 from a wifi connection I get a "Destination host not available" error. Obviously I'm missing something, but I'm not sure where. Any ideas on what I'm missing?

  • Sound works for only one user at a time

    I've noticed that sound becomes unavailable to me when someone else is logged into my machine and playing music (or has facebook open) in the other account. I've had to ask them to unlock their account and turn it off so I can get sound in my own stuff. Even in sound preferences, the hardware itself disappears and output is "dummy sound". Is there a way to prevent this from happening? What would be really good is if I could turn down the volume (or mute entirely) all the sounds on all other accounts on a per-user basis from my sound preferences without affecting whatever setting they have - essentially saying whenever user A is logged in, all sounds from user B's account are muted and anything from user C's account is at 50% while I can still have my own at full volume.

  • Ubuntu Server adding a new user

    Hi i am new to Ubuntu server and i have been trying to add a new user. I typed in adduser then username and also tried useradd then username but it does seem to add a user but when i login i only get a dollar sign instead of user@servername. I have tried adding rules to allow me into the sudo for that username but i just can't work out why i only get the dollar sign. So would be really grateful if someone could help me with this Thanks....
