• Strange messages on new Dell Workstation during bootup

  I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on a new Dell T-7500 Workstation, and am seeing some strange messages on the screen: Dell SAS 6 Host Bus Adapter BIOS MPTBIOS 6.22.03.00 ( 2008.08.06 ) Initializing….. Press Ctrl – C to run SAS Configuration Utility Searching for Devices at HBA 0….. Dell MPT Boot ROM Successfully installed Then it loads Windows 7. All of above happens on its own, I don't touch anything. So what is going on & what do I have to do get rid off those initializing commands ? I have never had this happen to any previously owned Dell systems. Also I haven't installed any drivers yet but Sound, Video & Internet does work. Do I need to install any additional drivers?

• How do I manage the technical debate over WCF vs. Web API?

  I'm managing a team of like 15 developers now, and we are stuck at a point on choosing the technology, where the team is broken into two completely opposite teams, debating over usage of WCF vs. Web API. Team A which supports usage of Web API, brings forward these reasons: Web API is just the modern way of writing services (Wikipedia) WCF is an overhead for HTTP. It's a solution for TCP, and Net Pipes, and other protocols WCF models are not POCO, because of [DataContract] & [DataMember] and those attributes SOAP is not as readable and handy as JSON SOAP is an overhead for network compared to JSON (transport over HTTP) No method overloading Team B which supports the usage of WCF, says: WCF supports multiple protocols (via configuration) WCF supports distributed transactions Many good examples and success stories exist for WCF (while Web API is still young) Duplex is excellent for two-way communication This debate is continuing, and I don't know what to do now. Personally, I think that we should use a tool only for its right place of usage. In other words, we'd better use Web API, if we want to expose a service over HTTP, but use WCF when it comes to TCP and Duplex. By searching the Internet, we can't get to a solid result. Many posts exist for supporting WCF, but on the contrary we also find people complaint about it. I know that the nature of this question might sound arguable, but we need some good hints to decide. We're stuck at a point where choosing a technology by chance might make us regret it later. We want to choose with open eyes. Our usage would be mostly for web, and we would expose our services over HTTP. In some cases (say 5 to 10 percent) we might need distributed transactions though. What should I do now? How do I manage this debate in a constructive way?

• E-Business Integration with SSO using AccessGate

  Moving away from the legacy Oracle SSO, Oracle E-Business Suite (EBS) came up with EBS AccessGate as the way forward to provide Single Sign On with Oracle Access Manager (OAM). As opposed to AccessGate in OAM terminology, EBS AccessGate has no specific connection with OAM with respect to configuration. Instead, EBS AccessGate uses the header variables sent from the SSO system to create the native user-session, like any other SSO enabled web application. E-Business Suite Integration with Oracle Access Manager It is a known fact that E-Business suite requires Oracle Internet Directory (OID) as the user repository to enable Single Sign On. This is due to the fact that E-Business Suite needs to be registered with OID to for Single Sign On. Additionally, E-Business Suite uses “orclguid” in OID to map the Single Sign On user with the corresponding local user profile. During authentication, EBS AccessGate expects SSO system to return orclguid and EBS username (stored as a user-attribute in SSO user store) in two header variables USER_ORCLGUID and USER_NAME respectively. Following diagram depicts the authentication flow once SSO system returns EBS Username and orclguid after successful authentication: Topic to brainstorm: EBS AccessGate as a generic SSO enablement solution for E-Business Suite AccessGate Even though EBS AccessGate is suggested as an integration approach between OAM and Oracle E-Business Suite, this section attempts to look at EBS AccessGate as a generic solution approach to provide SSO to Oracle E-Business Suite using any Web SSO solution. From the above points, the only dependency on the SSO system is that it should be able to return the corresponding orclguid from the OID which is configured with the E-Business Suite. This can be achieved by a variety of approaches: By using the same OID referred by E-Business Suite as the Single Sign On user store. If SSO System is using a different user store then: Use DIP or OIM to synch orclsguid from E-Business Suite OID to SSO user store Use OVD to provide an LDAP view where orclguid from E-Business Suite OID is part of the user entity in the user store referred by SSO System

• Copy TFS Build Definitions between Projects and Collections

There are of course exceptions to this, but there are a lot ot things that becomes much easier to do when you put all of your projects and team in the same team project. Fellow ALM MVP Martin Hinshelwood has blogged about this several times, as well as other people in the community. In particular, using the backlog and portfolio management tools makes much more sense when everything is located in the same team project. Consolidating multiple team projects into one is not that easy unfortunately, it involves migrating source code, work items, reports etc.  Another thing that also need to be migrated is build definitions. It is possible to clone build definitions within the same team project using the TFS power tools. The Community TFS Build Manager also lets you clone build definitions to other team projects. But there is no tool that allows you to clone/copy a build definition to another collection. So, I whipped up a simple console application that let you do this. If you don’t specify this, the name will the same as the original one Example: CopyTFSBuildDefinitions  https://jakob.visualstudio.com DemoProject  WebApplication.CI https://anotheraccount.visualstudio.com     Notes Since we are (potentially) create a build definition in a new collection, there is no guarantee that the various paths that are defined in the build definition exist in the new collection. For example, a build definition refers to server paths in TFVC or repos + branches in TFGit. It also refers to build controllers that definitely don’t exist in the new collection. So there will be some cleanup to do after you copy your build definitions. You can fix some of these using the Community TFS Build Manager, for example it is very easy to apply the correct build controller to a set of build definitions The problem stated above also applies to build process templates. However, the tool tries to find a build process template in the new team project with the same file name as the one that existed in the old team project. If it finds one, it will be used for the new build definition. • Bootloader error Ubuntu 12.04, system goes to Grub-rescue instead of booting

  I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on my system but it is constantly giving me bootloader install fail error. I have tried to lot to solve this issue but reading articles over the internet but still no gain. Firstly since the bootloader was not getting installed I tried to install it on all the alternative paths given in the installer, failing with I selected install ubuntu without bootloader. Then I tried to manually install bootloader via terminal at try ubuntu via grub-install, but I was not able to do that. Then I tried using boot-repair and it was also not able to install the bootloader because after it my system shows grub-rescue. I tried to use boot-repair and install bootloader on a seperate partition mounted to /boot and still my system is booting and it still shows grub-rescue. The error which my system shows during boot is: Error : no such device : 04ac0510-bd4f-43b8-b885-b885-11c4dec21db8 I am not dual booting and ubuntu is the only OS I am installing. I am using Raid 0 with two blue western digital hard drive so I am not sure whether it is right or not. The details given by boot-repair are in the below mentioned link; http://paste.ubuntu.com/1147208/ Afterwards, I made one more change I installed ubuntu again and this time I installed the bootloader at a different partition on /boot. After this the bootloader error has gone but I am still not able to boot to ubuntu as I get the same error I was getting before. I have not installed dmraid, I feel it is neccessary for Raid0, but I thought ubuntu already has Raid drivers. Moreover in the dmraid installation instructions for 12.04, I used the one for 10.04 and selected to install bootloader at the partitions from the dropdown. This time the installation finished normally without an error but still I am not able to boot my system as the same error shows during booting this time also. Now I am stucked and I have no clue on how I can boot my system. Please tell me how can I boot my system.

If you no longer need a machine on to be monitored or backed up, here we show you how to remove it. Remove Computer from WHS The process if straight-forward and basic –Open Windows Home Server Console and click on Computers & Backup. Right-click on the computer that you no longer need and click Remove. You’ll be prompted to verify that you want to remove the machine and delete all of its backup data. Check the box I am sure I want to remove this computer then click the Remove button. That’s all there is to it! The computer and all of its backup data is removed. Remember that if you remove a computer, all of its backup data will be deleted as well. If you no longer have the computer, you probably don’t need the backed up data anyway, but you’ll want to be sure you no longer need it before removing it.   I am using the ubuntu 11.10 on lenovo ideapad z570. My wireless internet is not working. I have ensure that wireless switch is on. Windows 7, wireless works great.However ubuntu 11.10 is not allowing me to enable wireless connection. • If Nvidia Shield can stream a game via WiFi (~150-300Mbps), where is the 1-10Gbps wired streaming?

  Facts: It is surprising and uncharacteristic that a wireless game streaming solution is the *first to hit the market when a 1000mbps+ Ethernet connection would accomplish the same feat with roughly 6x the available bandwidth. 150-300mbps WiFi is in no way superior to a 1000mbps+ LAN connection aside from well wireless mobility. Throughout time, (since the internet was created) wired services have **always come first yet in this particular case, the opposite seems to be true. We had wired internet first, wired audio streaming, and wired video streaming all before their wireless counterparts. Why? Largely because the wireless bandwidth was and is inferior. Even today despite being significantly better and capable of a lot more, it is still inferior to a wired connection. Situation: Chief among these is that NVIDIA’s Shield handheld game console will be getting a microconsole-like mode, dubbed “Shield Console Mode”, that will allow the handheld to be converted into a more traditional TV-connected console. In console mode Shield can be controlled with a Bluetooth controller, and in accordance with the higher resolution of TVs will accept 1080p game streaming from a suitably equipped PC, versus 720p in handheld mode. With that said 1080p streaming will require additional bandwidth, and while 720p can be done over WiFi NVIDIA will be requiring a hardline GigE connection for 1080p streaming (note that Shield doesn’t have Ethernet, so this is presumably being done over USB). Streaming aside, in console mode Shield will also support its traditional local gaming/application functionality. - http://www.anandtech.com/show/7435/nvidia-consolidates-game-streaming-tech-under-gamestream-brand-announces-shield-console-mode ^ This is not acceptable to me for a number of reasons not to mention the ridiculousness of having a little screen+controller unit sitting there while using a secondary controller and screen instead. That kind of redundant absurdity exemplifies how wrong of a solution that is. They need a second product for this solution without the screen or controller for it to make sense... at which point your just buying a little computer that does what most other larger computers do better. While this secondary project will provide a wired connection, it still shouldn't be necessary to purchase a Shield to have this benefit. Not only this but Intel's WiDi claims game streaming support as well - wirelessly. Where is the wired streaming? All that is required, by my understanding, is the ability to decode H.264 video compression and transmit control/feedback so by any logical comparison, one (Nvidia especially) should have no difficulty in creating an application for PC's (win32/64 environment) that does the exact same thing their android app does. I have 2 video cards capable of streaming (encoding) H.264 so by right they must be capable of decoding it I would think. I should be able to stream to my second desktop or my laptop both of which by hardware comparison are superior to the Shield. I haven't found anything stating plans to allow non-shield owners to do this. Can a third party create this software or does it hinge on some limitation that only Nvidia can overcome? Reiteration of questions: Is there a technical reason (non marketing) for why Nvidia opted to bottleneck the streaming service with a wireless connection limiting the resolution to 720p and introducing intermittent video choppiness when on a wired connection one could achieve, presumably, 1080p with significantly less or zero choppiness? Is there anything limiting developers from creating a PC/Desktop application emulating the same H.264 decoding functionality that circumvents the need to get an Nvidia Shield altogether? (It is not a matter of being too cheap to support Nvidia - I have many Nvidia cards that aren't being used. One should not have to purchase specialty hardware when = hardware already exists) Same questions go for Intel Widi also. I am just utterly perplexed that there are wireless live streaming solution and yet no wired. How on earth can wireless be the goto transmission medium? Is there another solution that takes advantage of H.264 video compression allowing live streaming over a wired connection? (*) - Perhaps this isn't the first but afaik it is the first complete package. (**) - I cant back that up with hard evidence/links but someone probably could. Edit: Maybe this will be the solution I am looking for but I still find it hard to believe that they would be the first and after wireless solutions already exist.   Historically, data was generated from predictable sources, stored in storage systems and accessed for further processing. This data was correlated, filtered and analyzed to derive insights and/or drive well constructed processes. There was little ambiguity in the kinds of data, the sources it would originate from and the routes that it would follow. Internet of Things (IoT) creates many opportunities to extract value from data that result in significant improvements across industries such as Automotive, Industrial Manufacturing, Smart Utilities, Oil and Gas, High Tech and Professional Services, etc. This demo showcases how the health of remotely deployed machinery can be monitored to illustrate how data coming from devices can be analyzed in real-time, integrated with back-end systems and visualized to initiate action as may be necessary. Use-case: Remote Service and Maintenance Critical machinery once deployed on the field, is expected to work with minimal failures, while delivering high performance and reliability. • What could be causing Windows to randomnly reset the system time to a random time?

  My Windows 7 machine infuriates me. It cannot hold a date. At one point it all worked fine, but now it will decide that it needs to change the system time to a random time and date either in the future or past. There seems to be no correlation or set interval of when it happens. To remedy it I have: Correctly set the time in bios. Replaced the motherboard battery with a new CR2032 (even checked it with a multimeter). Tried disabling automatic internet synchronizing via "Date and Time" dialog. Stopped, restarted, left disabled the Windows Time service. Yet with all of these actions, the time will continue to change. Any ideas?

• How do I increase my home's bandwidth?

  I just mistakingly posted this on Stack Exchange but don't know how to delete it... Anyway, I was thinking of building a home server to use instead of renting a VPS, because in the long run it would be cheaper. What I'm concerned with is the bandwidth limit of my house. I know when I'm downloading something off the internet, if I download at high speeds the rest of the computers connected to my router will become slower. Is there any way to avoid this? There are other cable outlets in my house, will connecting a modem and router there avoid this problem?

• SOHO NETGEAR wireless router disconnects when downloading torrents

  I have a NETGEAR WGT624 router at home which dies when there is a heavy torrent load. I open up my torrent client and it downloads for about 5 to 10 minutes and it continues to increase the number of seeds (goes up to 70-80 seeds), but after that the router simply fails and I have to restart it in order to get an internet connection again. Is there any way that I can fix this? New router firmware? Change some router options? Feed it a cookie? Anything?

• Streamline Active Directory account creation via automated web site

  In my company we have high employee turnover, and hence our helpdesk receives about a dozen requests per week for new Active Directory accounts. Currently, we receive these requests simply via e-mail or voice-mail, and rarely do we have all of the information necessary to create the account. I would like to find a web application that can be used by a manager or supervisor to formalize the requests they make for AD accounts for new employees under their command. Ideally, the application would prompt for all of necessary information, and allow the helpdesk to review the requests and approve or deny each one. If approved, the application would take care of creating the account and send an e-mail to the manager. I have found several application on the Internet that handle self-service account management (i.e., password resets or update contact info), which is also nice to have, but nothing that streamlines the new account request and creation part. Can anyone make suggestions on such an application? Thanks.

• How to efficiently merge a lot of vCard files for the same person?

  I currently have contact information at several places: old PDA's address book mobile phone's phone book (primarily name, phone number) email client's address book (primarily name, email) web mailer's address book (primarily name, email) instant messenger's contact list (primarily name, im, email, birthday) And there are several social or business networking sites on the Internet where contacts provide information about themselves, like LinkedIn or XING. All those sources can export as vCard, but as you might imagine, I get a lot of vCards for the very same contact that way. Are there any tools where I can import them and then merge them (it may ask me which phone number is more current in case of field clashes of course)? Bonus points if it can track which information I have discarded so when I re-export all information from one of the sources I can't import to (networking sites), it won't ask me again if I want to overwrite phone number of person X with the same ancient number... I hope you understand what I try to accomplish, if not just ask :-)

  The man who powered on the first LED half a century ago is still around to talk about it; read on to watch an interview with LED inventor Nick Holonyak. The most fascinating thing about Holonyak’s journey to the invention of the LED was that he started off trying to build a laser and ended up inventing a super efficient light source: Holonyak got his PhD in 1954. In 1957, after a year at Bell Labs and a two year stint in the Army, he joined GE’s research lab in Syracuse, New York. GE was already exploring semiconductor applications and building the forerunners of modern diodes called thyristors and rectifiers. At a GE lab in Schenectady, the scientist Robert Hall was trying to build the first diode laser. Hall, Holonyak and others noticed that semiconductors emit radiation, including visible light, when electricity flows through them. Holonyak and Hall were trying to “turn them on,” and channel, focus and multiply the light. Hall was the first to succeed. He built the world’s first semiconductor laser. Without it, there would be no CD and DVD players today. “Nobody knew how to turn the semiconductor into the laser,” Holonyak says. “We arrived at the answer before anyone else.” But Hall’s laser emitted only invisible, infrared light. Holonyak spent more time in his lab, testing, cutting and polishing his hand-made semiconducting alloys. In the fall of 1962, he got first light. “People thought that alloys were rough and turgid and lumpy,” he says. “We knew damn well what happened and that we had a very powerful way of converting electrical current directly into light. • allow SSH to bypass VPN on OSX mavericks, openvpn, pf

  My home computer connects to the internet through an OpenVPN connection. However, I would like to be able to connect to my home computer from outside over ssh. Ssh is set up and working, but when I connect to the vpn ssh is only accessible from inside my home network. I figure what's going wrong is my router forwards incoming ssh connections to my mac, but then my mac replies over the vpn, so the connection from outside times out. I've got pf set up for a couple of other things, but I can't figure out how to let the ssh replies bypass the vpn using pf. I've come across other solutions that use ip tables, routing tables and rules, but I can't figure out how to set that up on mavericks. I've been searching for this for a while now but I haven't found a working solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

  Nuget feed by team city is working perfectly but there is a strange problem. Local IP (http://192.168.xx.xx:9999/feed/../): Listing through browser works Accessing packages through Visual studio 11 nuget works VPN IP (http://55.xx.xx.xx:9999/feed/../): Listing packages through browser works Accessing packages through Visual studio 11 nuget PROBLEM GUEST Account: Everything works fine, both on VPN and local IP (so its purely an authentication problem) The problem is, we can't get the user to authenticate. Using the same credentials, no matter what we try we get 401. The server VPN ip is whitelisted in internet explorer intranet settings. Any ideas? Basically HTTP authentication is failing for the VPN although it shouldn't, since the browser works fine!

• Mac Parallels - Bridged network

  Hey All, I am new to Apple and my task is to install VMs on a Mac server. I am trying to install 4 VMs and I want them to have separate IPs and be visible on the network as separate machines. What are my options ? My research shows me that I can use bridged network, but I have to select an adapter. I have only two network adapters, does that mean I can only have 2 VMs ? And when I configure the 2 VMS, will my actual server have internet connection ? Or does it use the Mac address ?

  I have Debian Lenny machine with 3 interfaces enabled (eth0-2), and I have problems as follow. eth1 is connected to a router and this router has portforwarding for port80. eth2 is connected direct to the internet If I open a website hosted on my system via the router it works fine. • BlueCoat reverse proxy NTLM authentication

  Currently when we want to access an internal site from Internet (IIS with NTLM auth), we have two login screens that appear : step1 : LDAPAuth, from the BlueCoat that check login/password validity against Active Directory step2 : NTLM auth, from our application. Is it possible to configure the reverse proxy to use the LDAP credentials provided at step1, and give them to whatever application that requests them ? Of course, if those credentials aren't valid, nothing happens. We're using BlueCoat SG400. Update : we're not looking for SSO where the user doesn't have to enter a password. We want the user to enter his domain credentials in the LDAPAuth dialog box, and the proxy to reuse it to authenticate against our application. Or any application that uses NTLM. We've only got 1 AD domain behind the reverse proxy.

  I know little about networking the Internet, but, from what I understand, it works — very approximately — as follows: I, sitting at the computer example.com, send a message saying, roughly, "get http://s.tk" to my ISP, which passes the message along, eventually to the machine at s.tk. The s.tk machine gets "example.comhas sent 'gethttp://s.tk'", so sendssomefileto its ISP which passes the file along, eventually to the machine atexample.com`. When the file gets back to example.com, my computer, how does my computer know what to do with it? I'm sure the headers (or something else) indicate it's a Web page rather than, say, a Usenet post — that's not my question. My question is: how does it know whether to display the Web page in my open Opera window or my open Firefox window, or my other open Firefox window, or, heck, to open a new browser instance?

• Unlocking AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition cores - what are the risks?

  I've got the above mentioned CPU and a GigaByte GA-MA790XT-UD4P motherboard, which should be capable of unlocking the extra two cores - if I'm lucky and they're not faulty. The Internet is full of instructions on how to do that. What I don't have is spare money to buy new hardware if I brick something. What are the risks when attempting to do this? Is it completely safe, or can I be left with an expensive pile of junk? What should I keep in mind when doing so? Bigger cooler maybe (I'm running with the default box cooler)? Should I lower the frequencies too? I've never done any OC before.

• How do I delete the Windows Explorer address bar history

  Note: I am NOT referring to Internet Explorer. I am using Windows XP and Windows Server 2008 and need to delete the history values from the file browser (aka Windows Explorer). Somebody put a password into the address bar as ftp://user:pass, and now I can't delete the value. Some forums say to delete this registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Curre ntVersion\Explorer\TypedPaths In Windows XP, the key doesn't exist, and in Windows Server 2008, the key is there, but deleting it doesn't seem to help. Any help?
