• Can't place a breakpoint in asp.net master page file

  I have an MVC web application. I get an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" error in line 16 below. It's a master page file. When I try to place a breakpoint in that line or anywhere in the file, I get a "this is not a valid location for a breakpoint" error. I have clicked on every line and I can't place a single breakpoint. I do have lines which have code only. How do I place a breakpoint in this file? Note: I can place breakpoints in code files. In some other aspx files, I can place a breakpoint in some code lines and some not. Does the inline code have to be in a special format to place a breakpoint? Using VS 2010 in Windows 7 64bit. • Avoid the problem with BigDecimal when migrating to Java 1.4 to Java 1.5+

  Hello, I've recently migrated a Java 1.4 application to a Java 6 environment. Unfortunately, I encountered a problem with the BigDecimal storage in a Oracle database. To summarize, when I try to store a "7.65E+7" BigDecimal value (76,500,000.00) in the database, Oracle stores in reality the value of 7,650,000.00. This defect is due to the rewritting of the BigDecimal class in Java 1.5 (see here). In my code, the BigDecimal was created from a double using this kind of code: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal("" + someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... In more than 99% of the cases, everything works fine. Except that in really few case, the bug mentioned above occurs. And that's quite annoying. If I change the previous code to avoid the use of the String constructor of BigDecimal, then I do not encounter the bug in my uses cases: BigDecimal myBD = new BigDecimal(someDoubleValue); someObject.setAmount(myBD); // Now let Hibernate persists my object in DB... However, how can I be sure that this solution is the correct way to handle the use of BigDecimal? So my question is to know how I have to manage my BigDecimal values to avoid this issue: Do not use the new BigDecimal(String) constructor and use directly the new BigDecimal(double)? Force Oracle to use toPlainString() instead of toString() method when dealing with BigDecimal (and in this case how to do that)? Any other solution? • WPF User Control is causing Out of Memory Exception

  Looking for a free spell checking solution, I thought I was so smart in doing this but I guess not. I have created a windows form based application and I want the form to add a user specified amount of user controls (with textboxes) on to a panel. The user can then click some button and the controls on this panel are cleared and new ones are added. The user does something and the process is repeated. Now, I wanted these textboxes to support spell checking and looked all over for a free solution. WPF textboxes support spell checking where the ones in regular win forms do not. I thought I would be able to use these WPF textboxes by adding them to an ElementHost object which is, in turn, within a panel. This panel would be a user control. So, in my application, I would be able to add instances of these user controls onto the form and make use of .NET's spell checking goodness. This actually worked but after using the application for a while, found that the application would eventually freeze on me due to out of memory errors. I have pinpointed the memory errors to these WPF controls since this problem does not happen with normal textboxes. When the window is opened and the number of controls is specified, this is pretty much how the controls are added: Dim xOffset As Integer = 0 For i As Integer = 0 To theNumber Dim myUserControl As New SpecialUserControl() myPanel.Controls.Add(myUserControl) myUserControl.Location = New Point(7, 7) myUserControl.Location = New Point(xOffset, 7) xOffset = xOffset + 207 Next Note that: myPanel is a panel on a form SpecialUserControl is the user control with WPF textbox (within an ElementHost object) When the user pressed a button, the panel is cleared: myUserControl.Controls.Clear() The user can then repeat the process. There are a lot of results on the internet when I tried to find a solution and I'm thinking that the problem I am having is due to the fact that the WPF control is not going away even after clearing the panel. Following this conclusion, I have tried different solutions regarding disposing these controls or setting them to nothing but the memory problem keeps occurring. If someone could give me some advice or ideas here, I'd really appreciate it.

• Setting database-agnostic default column timestamp using Hibernate

  I'm working on a java project full of Hibernate (3.3.1) mapping files that have the following sort of declaration for most domain objects. <property name="dateCreated" generated="insert"> <column name="date_created" default="getdate()" /> </property> The problem here is that getdate() is an MSSQL specific function, and when I'm using something like H2 to test subsections of the project, H2 screams that getdate() isn't a recognized function. It's own timestamping function is current_timestamp(). I'd like to be able to keep working with H2 for testing, and wanted to know whether there was a way of telling Hibernate "use this database's own mechanism for retrieving the current timestamp". With H2, I've come up with the following solution. CREATE ALIAS getdate AS $$ java.util.Date now() { return new java.util.Date(); } $$; CALL getdate(); It works, but is obviously H2 specific. I've tried extending H2Dialect and registering the function getdate(), but that doesn't seem to be invoked when Hibernate is creating tables. Is it possible to abstract the idea of a default timestamp away from the specific database engine?

• Automatically release resources RAII-style in Perl

  Say I have a resource (e.g. a filehandle or network socket) which has to be freed: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; process($fh); close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; Suppose that process might die. Then the code block exits early, and $fh doesn't get closed. I could explicitly check for errors: open my $fh, "<", "filename" or die "Couldn't open filename: $!"; eval {process($fh)}; my $saved_error = $@; close $fh or die "Couldn't close filename: $!"; die $saved_error if $saved_error; but this kind of code is notoriously difficult to get right, and only gets more complicated when you add more resources. In C++ I would use RAII to create an object which owns the resource, and whose destructor would free it. That way, I don't have to remember to free the resource, and resource cleanup happens correctly as soon as the RAII object goes out of scope - even if an exception is thrown. Unfortunately in Perl a DESTROY method is unsuitable for this purpose as there are no guarantees for when it will be called. Is there a Perlish way to ensure resources are automatically freed like this even in the presence of exceptions? Or is explicit error checking the only option?

SetupVisibility() wants to show textbox and label, but then I get the error: Microsoft JScript - runtime error: Cannot update control with ID: ctl00_CPH1_lblTest. The control does not exist. • Apache POI Comment Excel

  I need to add a comment to an HSSF Cell in Excel. Everything works fine the very first time but if I open the same file and run the code again it corrupts the file. I've also noticed that I need to create a Drawing object on a Sheet only once: _sheet.createDrawingPatriarch(); If the line above gets executed more than once comments will not work. So has anyone tried adding comments to Cells, closing the file, opening the file again and trying to add more comments to different cells? The below code works but if I open the file again then comments are not added, plus the file gets corrupted!!! Is there a way to get the existing Drawing object from a Sheet? Any ideas appreciated. • Passing custom Python objects to nosetests

  I am attempting to re-organize our test libraries for automation and nose seems really promising. My question is, what is the best strategy for passing Python objects into nose tests? Our tests are organized in a testlib with a bunch of modules that exercise different types of request operations. Something like this: testlib \-testmoda \-testmodb \-testmodc In some cases the test modules (i.e. testmoda) is nothing but test_something(), test_something2() functions while in some cases we have a TestModB class in testmob with the test_anotherthing1(), test_anotherthing2() functions. The cool thing is that nose easily finds both. Most of those test functions are request factory stuff that can easily share a single connection to our server farm. Thus we do a lot of test_something1(cnn), TestModB.test_anotherthing2(cnn), etc. Currently we don't use nose, instead we have a hodge-podge of homegrown driver scripts with hard-coded lists of tests to execute. Each of those driver scripts creates its own connection object. Maintaining those scripts and the connection minutia is painful. I'd like to take free advantage of nose's beautiful discovery functionality, passing in a connection object of my choosing. Thanks in advance! Rob P.S. The connection objects are not pickle-able. :(

How can I query those attributes so I can get ie. Get all the users where attributename is "Age" and attribute value is "20" ? I don't want to do this in foreach because I may have millions of users each having its unique attributes. Please help

• Error while splitting application context file in spring

  I am trying to split the ApplicationContext file in Spring. For ex. the file is testproject-servlet.xml having all the entries. Now I want to split this single file into multiple files according to logical groups like : group1-services.xml, group2-services.xml I have created following entries in web.xml : <servlet> <servlet-name>testproject</servlet-name> <servlet-class> org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet </servlet-class> <init-param> <param-name>contextConfigLocation</param-name> <param-value> /WEB-INF/group1-services.xml, /WEB-INF/group2-services.xml </param-value> </init-param> <load-on-startup>1</load-on-startup> </servlet> I am using SimpleUrlHandlerMapping as: RegisterController PayrollServicesController I also have the controller defined as : .. .. The problem is that I have splitted the ApplicationContext file "testproject-servlet.xml" into two different files and I have kept the above entries in "group1-services.xml". Is it fine? I want to group things logically based on their use in seperate .xml files. But I am getting the following error when I try to access a page inside the application : org.springframework.web.servlet.DispatcherServlet noHandlerFound WARNING: No mapping for [/TestProject/payroll_services.htm] in DispatcherServlet with name 'testproject' Please tell me how to resolve it. • Visual Studio Designer looses / ignores data

  I'm writing my own control - a datagridviewcolumn that displays integer values as texts like the comboboxcolumn can but without showing the combobox unless the cell is edited. I'm mostly there but I have problems with the databinding. I managed to get the necessary properties to appear in the designer but every time I set the datasource and close the editor the changes are dropped. • ASP.NET MVC and NHibernate coupling

  I have just started learning NHibernate. Over the past few months I have been using IoC / DI (structuremap) and the repository pattern and it has made my applications much more loosely coupled and easier to test. When switching my persistence layer to NHibernate I decided to stick with my repositories. Currently I am creating a new session on each method call but of course this means that I can not benefit from lazy loading. Therefore I wish to implement session-per-request but in doing so this will make my web project dependent on NHibernate (perhaps this is not such a bad thing?). I was planning to inject ISession into my repositories and create and dispose sessions on beginrequest/endrequest events (see http://ayende.com/Blog/archive/2009/08/05/do-you-need-a-framework.aspx) Is this a good approach? Presumably I cannot use session-per-request without having a reference to NHibernate in my web project? Having the web project dependent on NHibernate prompts my next (few) questions - why even bother with the repository? Since my web app is calling services that talk to the repositories, why not ditch the repositories and just add my NHibernate persistance code inside the services? And finally, is there really any need to split out into so many projects. Is a web project and an infrastructure project sufficient? I realise that I have veered off a bit from my original question but it seems that everyone seems to have their own opinion on these topics. Some people use the repository pattern with NHibernate, some don't. Some people stick their mapping files with the related classes, others have a separate project for this. Many thanks, Ben

  I have a MATLAB function that I've compiled into a .net library. The function is a simple one that takes a character array as an input and a numeric array as output: function insert = money(dateLimit) .. insert = [1 2]; The function works fine when no function arguments are specified (a default argument is provided inside the function) Dim sf As New SpreadFinder.SpreadFinder Dim output = sf.money() As soon as an argument is specified .net complains. I'm thinking this should be easy and has been done before but searching through MATLAB documentation doesn't offer much help. Here's what I've tried. The sf.money() overload for the function with arguments is (numArgsOut as Integer, argsOut as MWArray, argsIn as MWArray) and hence that's what I've tried. What am I missing? • Quick help refactoring Ruby Class

  I've written this class that returns feed updates, but am thinking it can be further improved. It's not glitchy or anything, but as a new ruby developer, I reckon it's always good to improve :-) class FeedManager attr_accessor :feed_object, :update, :new_entries require 'feedtosis' def initialize(feed_url) @feed_object = Feedtosis::Client.new(feed_url) fetch end def fetch @feed_object.fetch end def update @updates = fetch end def updated? @updates.new_entries.count > 0 ? true : false end def new_entries @updates.new_entries end end As you can see, it's quite simple, but the things I'm seeing that aren't quite right are: Whenever I call fetch via terminal, it prints a list with the updates, when it's really supposed return an object. So as an example, in the terminal if I do something like: client = Feedtosis::Client.new('http://stackoverflow.com/feeds') result = client.fetch I then get: <Curl::Easy http://stackoverflow.com/feeds> Which is exactly what I'd expect. However, when doing the same thing with "inniting" class with: FeedManager.new("http://stackoverflow.com/feeds") I'm getting the object returning as an array with all the items on the feed. Sure I'm doing something wrong, so any help refactoring this class will he greatly appreciated. Also, I'd like to see comments about my implementation, as well as any sort of comment to make it better would be welcome. Thanks in advance

  I have an Entity Framework 4.0 Entity Object called Revision w/ Nullable DateEffectiveFrom and DateEffectiveTo dates. • Multiple dynamic timers

  I am working on a project where I need to let the user create one (or more) timers to fire off an event. The user is supposed to define variables such as if the timer should be active and how often the timer will fire along with some other variables of what will happen when the timer is fiering. All these variables are stored in a dictionary (Disctionary) where the object holds all the variables the user has set and the string is the name that the user has chosen for this timer. I then want my program to loop through this dictionary and search for all objects which has the variable t_Active set to true (this I have already achieved). What I need help with figuring out is the follwoing: When it detects the variable, and if it's set to true, I need the program to see if there is already a timer created for this. If it isn't, it should create one and set the relevant parameters for the timer. The two variables t_num and t_period should decide the interval of the timer. t_num is an int and t_period is a string which will be set to either minutes, hours or days. Combining t_num with 60000 (minutes), 3600000 (hours) or 86400000 should give the corrct interval. But how would I go on about programatically create a timer for each user-defined active object? And how do I get the program to detect wether or not a timer has already been created? I have been searching both here and on google, but so far I haven't come across something that makes sense to me. I am still learning C#, so what make sense to you guys may not neccessarilly make sense to me yet. :) I hope I have explaned what I need good enough, please do ask me to clarify if you don't get me. Edit: Maybe I should also mention that the mentioned dictionary will also be saved to an XML file to that the user can pick up all the settings they made at any time.

• Using VSTO in a standalone application to access Excel sheets

  Dear all, tried to research on that but sometimes I seem to lack some googling skills... I want to develop a (standalone) WinForms application which uses automation for communicating with Excel. I already know how to use the Interop, but I thought the VSTO tools would provide a more comfortable or sophisticated way to do that. My idea was: I could build a new standalone project with the excel references prepared. I could use a more sophisticated object model supplied by VSTO to communicate with Excel. However, my findings so far make me think that: VSTO can only be used to build add-ins/worksheets for Excel, not to build standalone application. There is no more sophisticated object model than the one provided by the Interop (which has such ugly things as a locale bug, a "Open(Missing, Missing, Missing...)" method and so on. I found a Worksheet and a Workbook class in the VSTO namespace, but as far as I understand it, these always refer to the CS classes for sheets and workbook which you implement when defining an Excel add-in or a workbook extension. - They cannot be used as comfortable wrappers in a standalone application. Can anybody confirm these statements or correct me where I am wrong? Further, if there should be a way to use VSTO and its "Workbook" class to load an excel workbook from a standalone application, then how do I do that? Thx, chiccodoro

When I compile it I get an array index out of bounds error, and a crash. I don't understand what is wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Why does the Combo.SelectedValue get lost after some time

  So I have this asp:DropDownList on a page. It renders like this (in IE7): <select name="ctl00$cphFilter$cbLista" onchange="javascript:setTimeout('__doPostBack(\'ctl00$cphFilter$cbLista\',\'\')', 0)" id="ctl00_cphFilter_cbLista" class="agsSelect"> <option selected="selected" value="4350">A</option> <option value="4352">B</option> <option value="4349">C</option> <option value="4348">D</option> And then I have a grid and a button on the same page. When the user clicks the button the selected item of the dropdown is read (well a datasource object reads it) and the grid does a databind after a trip to a DB where it gets some data based on that selected value. This works fine most of the time. However sometimes, the selection in the dropdownlist seems to get lost even though the rendered page says the A is the selected item. The datasource object is defined like this: <asp:ObjectDataSource ID="dsVM" runat="server" EnablePaging="False" SelectMethod="Select" SortParameterName="sort" TypeName="X.Business.Entities.LPVM.BE"> <SelectParameters> <asp:ControlParameter Name="listaId" Type="Int32" ControlID="cphFilter$cbLista" PropertyName="SelectedValue" /> </SelectParameters> </asp:ObjectDataSource> Any ideas why the grid would reload its data with a select parameter that is 0 instead of the selected value of the dropdownlist? EDIT Suppose the dropdownlist is bound, the user selected B and the grid is bound as well and shows the right data. Now, I wait 2 minutes and I click the Refresh button. Surprisingly, at this particular moment the dropdownlist.SelectedValue (which I already know it was 4352 before I clicked because that's how it looks in the rendered page) is actually an empty string. Where did the value go?
