• XAMPP MySQL stops running after ~1.5 seconds

  I have tried installing it as a service. Nothing seems to work! I have checked the status page and MySQL is listed as "Deactivated". When trying to open phpMyAdmin I get: Error MySQL said: Documentation #1045 - Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) Connection for controluser as defined in your configuration failed. phpMyAdmin tried to connect to the MySQL server, and the server rejected the connection. You should check the host, username and password in your configuration and make sure that they correspond to the information given by the administrator of the MySQL server. and from the CD demo: Warning: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Access denied for user 'root'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in C:\xampp\htdocs\xampp\cds.php on line 77 Could not connect to database! • Connecting to FileZilla FTP Server on XAMPP localhost with Dreamweaver

  I am running XAMPP 1.7.4. I've installed the FileZilla FTP server and I'm running it as a service. I created a user and when I connect as that user with the FileZilla client, I have no trouble connecting. However, in Dreamweaver CS5 when I create a site using the Manage Sites dialog and go to configure its FTP settings, I get a message that reads An FTP error occurred - cannot make connection to host. and goes on to list some possible causes and solutions. I have tried setting the connection as passive to no avail. I understand that it is not necessary to use FTP when I am editing the site locally, but it is for a Dreamweaver class I am teaching and I want my students to learn to use Dreamweaver's FTP tools. How can I make my localhost FTP connection work in Dreamweaver?

• High quality/performance shared hosting (in northern Europe)

  I work as a web developer on almost all levels. However, my typical customer is a 1-5 guys running some sort of consulting business. They have (or want) a web page with some kind of CMS so the can perform most (or all) editing themselves. I normally opt for Concrete5 as my default CMS because it's the most user friendly (and free) CMS I have found. My good recurring customers I host on my own server as a service, but I need a good host for the customers where I want to deliver a product and not be responsible for whatever may happen in the future. However, I still struggle with hosting! Experience shows that the typical ~1$ shared hosting is waaay to slow to run concrete5 smoothly, and a VPS is out of the question because I don't want to maintain it. So, where can I find as fast (from northern Europe), reliable, shared host where I can put a site and don't have to worry about the server going down or being unmaintained. I expect this should cost around $10-$20 but I'm open to all kinds of suggestions because different customers have different budgets.

• Setting up Kerberos SSO in Windows 2008 network

  We recently introduced Kerberos (SPNEGO) Single Sign-on in our web-portal, and tested it on a Windows network with Windows 2003 domain controller. Now, trying to test it on Windows 2008 R2 controlled network, SSO just doesn't work due to defective tokens. Up to the moment I was pretty sure that there's something wrong about environment and that were NTLM tokens. We double checked IE settings etc, but nothing helped. Then we checked the following settings for both users (logged on a client test-machine, and the one used as a Service Principal): This account supports Kerberos AES 128 bit encryption. This account supports Kerberos AES 256 bit encryption. .. and error message changed to ' GSSException: Failure unspecified at GSS-API level (Mechanism level: Encryption type AES256CTS mode with HMAC SHA1-96 is not supported/enabled) It makes me think that Internet Explorer receives Kerberos tokens at all times, and there's just some configuration missing, or it was ktpass.exe to be incorrectly executed. • Use C2WTS to get a classic windows identity from a claims identity

A lot of backend systems still demand classic windows identities, but everything we do now has moved to claims. So sometimes (albeit rare), we have to translate a claims identity into a classic windows identity. This is where the “Claims to Windows Token Service” comes into play. SharePoint 2010 and 2013 make use of this but you can use this in any .NET application. First of all, there are some basic requirements for this to work, First, you will need the string value of a UPN claim. Just a string value, really! This means you can also use FBA or anything else. The “proper” way to do this of course is that you must originate this from a AD backed claim. So a user authenticated using ADFS or similar would be perfect. • How long do servers usually last?

  I'm trying to estimate ROI for a new server and how long it will most likely be in service. Are there any average numbers for how long you can expect a server to last that's in 24/7 use? In other words, is it likely to find 10-year old server from 2010 in today's racks? How about servers from 2005? I'd love to get an idea for how long a server will most likely be in use. By the way, this is meant irrespective of growing or changing application needs. I'm talking only about the hardware.

• Speeding up Connection Between Computer and Wireless/Bridged Router

  Hey everyone, I looked through other questions, but didn't find useful responses. Our main computer has a dl speed of 6 Mbps, but some of our other computers are getting only 40-200 Kb! The router is wireless, but all computers are connected using a Netgear Wall-Plugged Bridge XE102, which transmits information via the building's powerline. It can't be the hardware itself, however, because some computers still manage decent speeds. The computers afflicted are running on Microsoft XP Service Packs 2 and 3, but so are computers that are totally functional. These speeds severely impede on productivity and are excruciatingly frustrating when trying to cram in time in the early hours. Could it be an issue with the computer? Location? Router? • Active Directory replication failing with Access is Denied

  I recently discovered that Active Directory replication started failing about a month ago. If I attempt to Replicate Now from the failing domain controller, I receive The following error occurred during the attempt to synchronize the domain controllers: Access is denied. It is between two servers at a remote site. One is Windows 2003 and the other is Windows 2000; the Windows 2000 machines is experiencing the errors. The domain is older OUR_DOMAIN style. Attempts so far: I disabled Kerberos service on the Windows 2000 server and restarted RPC and RPC locater services have expected settings HKEY_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Rpc\ClientProtocols missing ncacn_nb_tcp on Windows 20003 server (added) Portqry reports okay Firewall disabled netdom resetpwd (and reboot) on Windows 2000 server.

• Windows 7 Slow Searching

  I have a new Windows 7 machine with twice as much RAM and a faster processor than my old Windows Server 2008 R2 Machine. I am disappointed that searching amongst my 10,000 image files takes twice as long on my new Windows 7 machine. Both machines have their own copy of these same files. In other respects e.g. opening my huge Outlook files, the new machine is faster. The Windows Search Service has started. And I set indexing on the image folder about 3 days ago. Any ideas why I suffer from this poor index / search experience? Other than adding / removing folders, is there anything I can do to tweak indexing?

  I just installed red hat enterprise 5 in my laptop and on desktop both. In desktop it is working fine but in laptop it is not showing the eth device. (I tried ifconfig only lo is there). I tried ifup eth0 still nothing happened. The network service in /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 and in /etc/sysconfig/network are enable. I had ubuntu in my laptop before and I faced same problem with that too. Is there any problem with my laptop? I have my system on dual boot and in win7 networking is running fine. I am not able to connect to the internet only, other devices are working fine. System conf: Sony vaio E series. 3 GB RAM, intel core i3 2.13 GHZ.

• Is an Adnroid-based Phone a Suitable MP3 Player for Music Streamed over the Internet?

I also have an online account with a music vendor, where I have rights to listen to my collection, but not download the MP3s. Further, I have an unlimited data plan and Wi-Fi, so I have full access to bandwidth volume without any concerns. I am especially interested in mounting my phone in a car kit, and streaming my online music to my car's sound system while driving. • Word document has very strange "hidden" formating after converting from PDF to .docx

  I have a PDF document with my resume which I need to edit. I used this service to convert it to doc. I opened it in Word 2010 and saved it as .docx. There are some bizzare problems where there's empty space and if you try to delete it text gets shifted into vertical columns. How can I fix this? I'm afraid this document has a lot of private information and I can't just fill in dummy text, then the formatting gets even more messed up :/ Otherwise I'd post screen shots.

• DB auto failover in c# does not work when the principal server physically goes offline

  I'm setting up DB auto failover in C# with SQL Server 2008 and I have a 'high safety with automatic failover mirror' using a witness setup and my connection string looks like "Server=tcp:DC01; Failover Partner=tcp:DC02; database=dbname; uid=sewebsite;pwd=somerndpwd;Connect Timeout=10;Pooling=True;" During testing, when I turn off the SQL Server service on the principal server the auto failover works like a charm, but if I take the principal server offline (by shutting down the server or killing the network card) auto failover does not work and my website just times out. I found this article where the second last post suggests that its because we are using named pipes which does not work when the principal goes offline, but we force TCP in our connection string. What am I missing to get this DB auto failover working?

• Would Apple be able to tell if I'm running Mac OS inside a VM?

  Just as the question/title says. I understand that running Mac OS inside of a VM is against the EULA for the consumer version (but not the server, which is much more expensive!) If I were to purchase a legal copy of Mac OS, and install it to a VM, then register as an Apple Developer, would they shut me out? Is there a way they can tell the difference between emulated hardware and Apple computers? I'm slightly unfamiliar with how all of Apple's software works. Windows goes through this "genuine" test whenever installing service packs, but I don't know if Mac goes through the same trouble. Many thanks, -Tom

• Purpose of JBoss tables

  Hi Can anyone point me in the direction of some documentation (or provide the information here) about the following tables, created by JBoss 5.1.0 when it starts up? I know what they are for at a high level, and know why they are there, but I could do with some lower-level documentation about each table's purpose. The tables are: hilosequences timers jbm_counter jbm_dual jbm_id_cache jbm_msg jbm_msg_ref jbm_postoffice jbm_role jbm_tx jbm_user I know that the first two are associated with uuid-key-generator and the EJB Timer Service respectively, while the rest are associated with JBoss Messaging. What I want to know is something along the lines of "jmg_msg stores each message when it is created...", that kind of thing. I wasn't sure where to ask this question, ServerFault or StackOverflow, but I decided it wasn't programming related so thought I should put it here - I hope that's ok! Thanks Rich

• Pandaboard crash on startup or freeze after minutes

  I just received my Pandaboard ES (rev B) and I am having trouble after installing ubuntu-omap4-addons. Once I copied the image ubuntu-12.04-preinstalled-desktop-armhf+omap4.img on my sd card and boot the pandaboard with it, I run the following commands: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tiomap-dev/release sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade sudo apt-get install ubuntu-omap4-extras At the end of the installation of ubuntu-omap4-extras, Ubuntu tells me that a problem occurs when the console displays: ldconfig deferred processing now taking place Clicking on "report the problem" tell me that the problem concerns pvr-omap4-dkms. I read somewhere that this can happen and it is better to reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms. Which I am doing by running: sudo apt-get install --reinstall pvr-omap4-dkms I reboot. Then the board has sometimes difficulties to start Ubuntu: it freezes during the loading page, only action I can do is unplugging the board to start it again. Some other times, Ubuntu load successfully but then freeze at another random time, in the range 20 - 40 minutes. I searched on internet for similar bug and found this: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ti-omap4/+bug/971091 So I typed this in: update-rc.d ondemand disable apt-get -y install cpufrequtils echo 'ENABLE="true" GOVERNOR="performance" MAX_SPEED="0" MIN_SPEED="0"' > /etc/default/cpufrequtils cpufreq-set -r -g performance reboot But it doesn't seems to fix the bug. • Track sales and commission with third-party tool

  I have a clothing website where I link to various clothing retailers. I have reached an agreement with one of the retailers whereby they will pay a commission to us for every sale they make from traffic that was referred by our site. I need a mechanism for tracking how much commission should be paid to us, that involves as little work as possible to implement from their side. We both have Google Analytics. Option 1: They record a goal in their GA account whenever someone makes a purchase on their site. They see how many completed goals are marked as referral traffic from our site and calculate commission accordingly. The problem with this is that the whole process of calculating and paying commission will be manual. They will need to frequently check how many sales were generated by referral traffic from our site, and probably we will have to chase them for commission payments. Also - since we won't have access to their GA data - we will need to trust that they report all sales accurately. Option 2: Sign them up to an affiliate network like Commission Junction or Google's Affiliate Network, and connect to them through this network. The problem with this solution is that it seems too heavyweight; ideally we don't want to ask a retailer to go through the whole sign up process just to deal with us and pay us commission. I am assuming that there must be some lightweight service that tracks the number of sales by one site and pays commission accordingly to the other site, where the sign up and installation procedure is simple and fast.

• No response from example.com using Apache

  I am unable to access example.com or by local IP after restarting the server. I checked to make sure httpd service was on. I looked at the error_log in /var/log/httpd and found nothing. Tried to restart httpd again and it says 'Ok'. I'm not sure where else to check. I did move DocumentRoot from /var/www to /web-root and it worked before restarting the server. I tried pointing it back to /var/www and still not able to view the page. IPtables have not changed. Any suggestions?

• AXFR problem using gradwell secondary DNS

  Hi All I use Gradwell.com to provide secondary DNS but I keep getting e-mails along the lines of the following saying that it's not working: You have asked us to provide a secondary DNS service for the following domain(s) Unfortunately, the primary DNS server(s) you specified are not permitting the necessary zone transfers from our servers, or they are not answering "SOA" queries for your domain correctly. I have gone through the support procedure and they weren't that helpful. They have suggested the following: Our secondline team have suggested setting the AXFR to use anouther machine. This will ensure that the transfer is not locked down to one machine and should allow any machine to make the request I don't really know what AFXR is and I only have 1 production machine so I can't set the AFXR to use another one! In previous support correspondence we confirmed that I am allowing transfers to the correct IP and that I have the correct ports open on the firewall. I am running Windows Server 2003. What can I do to try and get these zone transfers working? Thanks

• Video on demand streaming solution

  we are looking into building a commercial vod service and I'm doing research on the subject. We need the video to be protected with DRM so users cant rip/copy (i realise its mostly useless but the lawyers demand it from us) and the server solution to be scalable and able to distrubute content in hd to a high number of clients. Besides, we would need to be able to develop a player integrated with the payment system, so users that havent bought access would for example only see the first 30 seconds of video and then have the playback interrupted, or only be able to watch video for 72h after payment. Also it would be nice if we could distribute video to mobile platforms like android/wp8/ios but thats not a priority at the moment. I have zero experience on that topic so I would greatly appreciate any feedback or giving me stuff to read about like protocols or key phrases i should know. Thanks

  hi, I've installed Drupal on a new webserver and I get the following errors: warning: is_writable() [function.is-writable]: open_basedir restriction in effect. File(/tmp) is not within the allowed path(s): (/customers/rollergirl.ch/rollergirl.ch:/var/www/diagnostics:/usr/share/php) in /customers/rollergirl.ch/rollergirl.ch/httpd.www/drupal/sites/all/modules/imagecache/imagecache.install on line 37. ImageCache Temp Directory /tmp is not writeable by the webserver. I guess this happen because the server is not configured with a writable tmp folder I don't have access to Apache configuration file (I only know for sure it is Apache). Could you suggest me what to do ? I can only contact web server service ? thanks
