• starting and stopping hsqldb from unit tests

  I'm trying to create integration tests using hsqldb in an in memory mode. At the moment, I have to start the hsqldb server from the command line before running the unit tests. I would like to be able to be able to control the hsqldb server from my integration tests. I can't seem to get this to all work out though from code. • Shopify JSONP issue in ajaxAPI

  I'm getting some odd response back from shopify ajaxapi for jsonp. If you cURL a Shopify ajax api location http://storename.domain.com/cart.json?callback=handler you will get a jsonp response. But something is breaking the same request in browsers. It appears to be related to compression? Here are some responses from each browser when attempting to call the jsonp as documented. Firefox: The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because it uses an invalid or unsupported form of compression. I have an ASP.NET MVC project, much like the NerdDinner tutorial example. (I'm using MVC 2, but followed the NerdDinner tutorial in order to create it). As per the instructions in part 3 of the tutorial, I've created a Linq-to-SQL model of my database by creating a "Linq to SQL Classes" (.dbml) surface, and dropping my database tables onto it. The designer has automatically added relationships between the generated classes based on my database tables. Let's say that my classes are as per the NerdDinner example, so I have Dinner and RSVP tables, where each Dinner record is associated with many RSVP records - hence in the generated classes, the Dinner object has a RSVPs property which is a list of RSVP objects. My problem is this: it appears (and I'd be gladly proved wrong on this) that as soon as I access a Dinner object, it's loading all of the corresponding RSVP objects, even if I don't use the RSVPs member. First question: is this really the default behavior for the generated classes? In my particular situation, the object graph contains many more tables (which have an order of magnitude more records), and so this is disastrous behaviour - I'd be loading tons of data when all I want to do is show the details of a single parent record. Second question: are there any properties exposed through the designer UI that would let me modify this behavior? (I can't find any). Third question: I've seen a description of how to control the loading of related records in a DataContext by using a DataShape object associated with the DataContext. Is that what I'm meant to do, and if so are there any tutorials like the NerdDinner one that would show not only how to do it, but also suggest a 'pattern' for normal use?

• WPF Browser is there, but invisible.

• How does MSN filter spam?

  I am trying to create a newsletter for our business. The last few days have been spent testing, and one of things I have noticed is that MSN seemingly randomly filters out some of my test messages. This is super-frustrating. I like the PEAR Mail MIME-package, and have been using that. I may send one email from one of our servers, resulting in the message getting through, and in the next minute, the same message sent from our other server ends up in the junk folder. Then if I add an attachment to the email, and the same message passes though the filter from the server that was previously blocked. I think. What the ####? Is this like throwing a dice, without me having any control over what is trash, and what isn't? I have sent email from several servers, all of which are shared. But I am unsure this is the problem. The problem is that it is seemingly random how MSN filters email. Some emails get through, and some other don't for seemingly irrational reasons. I am running out of ideas, but I am not giving up. Therefore I am writing to you for HARDCORE technical info on how MSN filters spam.

• JEditorPanes, Preferred Size, and printing HTML

  I'm trying to print some HTML directly, without displaying anything to the user. It works currently (somewhat) using a custom JEditorPane that implements Printable. The problem I'm having is that it always wants to use a preferred size of 582px x 560px. If I manually change the size using something like setSize(x,y) it will change the size of the pane, put the content renders at preferred size, not actual size (so it's still 582x560). I can scale it up to fit the page, but it's basically just an enlarged version where the images are all pixelated and the layout is wrong (based on the smaller window size). Inside the print method of my Printable JEditorPane I used this to try and get the size: javax.swing.JWindow wnd = new javax.swing.JWindow(); wnd.setContentPane(this); wnd.setSize(1024,1584); wnd.pack(); Dimension d = wnd.getPreferredSize(); With or without that setSize and/or pack methods on the JWindow the preferred size always comes back as 582x560. I do have control over the html that I'm trying to print but I'd rather not have to rewrite all of that to scale it down so it will print correctly at full size (when scaled up).

• controlling which project header file Xcode will include

  My Xcode project builds to variations of the same product using two targets. The difference between the two is only on which version of an included library is used. For the .c source files it's easy to assign the correct version to the correct target using the target check box. However, including the header file always includes the same one. This is correct for one target, but wrong for the other one. Is there a way to control which header file is included by each target? Here is my project file hierarchy (which is replicated in Xcode): MyProject TheirOldLib theirLib.h theirLib.cpp TheirNewLib theirLib.h theirLib.cpp myCode.cpp and myCode.cpp does thing such as: #include "theirLib.h" … somecode() { #if OLDVERSION theirOldLibCall(…); #else theirNewLibCall(…); #endif } And of course, I define OLDVERSION for one target and not for the other. So is there a way to tell Xcode which theirLib.h to include per target? Constraints: - the two header files have the same name. As a last resort, I could rename one of them, but I'd rather avoid that as this will lead to major hair pulling on the other platforms. - I'm free to tweak my project as I otherwise see fit Thanks for any help.

• using JQuery and Prototype in the same page

  Hi, Several of my pages use both JQuery and Protoype. Since I upgraded to version 1.3 of JQuery this appears to be causing problems, because both libraries define a function named '$'. JQuery provides a function noConflict() which relinquishes control of $ to other libraries that may be using it. So it seems like I need to go through all my pages that look like this: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/jquery.js"></script> </head> and change them to look like this: <head> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/prototype.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript" src="/obp/js/jquery.js"></script> <script type="text/javascript"> jQuery.noConflict(); var $j = jQuery; </script> </head> I should then be able to use '$' for Prototype and '$j' (or 'jQuery') for JQuery. I'm not entirely happy about duplicating these 2 lines of code in every relevant page, and expect that at some point somebody is likely to forget to add them to a new page. I'd prefer to be able to do the following Create a file jquery-noconflict.js which "includes" jquery.js and the 2 lines of code shown above Import jquery-noconflict.js (instead of jquery.js) in all my JSP/HTML pages However, I'm not sure if it's possible to include one JS file in another, in the manner I've described? Of course an alternate solution is simply to add the 2 lines of code above to jquery.js directly, but if I do that I'll need to remember to do it every time I upgrade JQuery. Thanks in advance, Don

  I created a cab file that contains my activex using CABARC.exe. I also created an .inf file. My inf file looks like this: [version] signature="$CHICAGO$" AdvancedINF=2.0 [Add.Code] MySetup.exe=MySetup.exe [MySetup.exe] file-win32-x86=thiscab clsid={49892510-B520-4b35-8ADF-57084DD2F717} My html looks like this: <object name="secondobj" style='display:none' id='TestActivex' classid='CLSID:49892510-B520-4b35-8ADF-57084DD2F717' codebase='http://myurl/MySetup.cab#version=1,0,0,0'></object> I created the CABARC using the following commmand: C:\tools\Cab\BIN>CABARC.EXE N MySetup.cab MySetup.msi setup.inf I also added http://myurl to the trusted sites. Now the first time I opened the html page in IE, I saw a yellow bar, which I accepted. However it never installed the activex control. I dont see the installation in my program files nor can I see anything in the event logs or in the temporary download folder or in the "manage add-ons". Now everytime I open the webpage in IE, I do not see the yellow bar anymore. Can anybody help me out here please?

• C# trying to capture the KeyDown event on a form

  Hello! I am creating a small game, the game is printed onto a panel on a windows form. Now i want to capture the keydown event to see if its the arrow keys that has been pressed, the problem however is that i can't seem to capture it. Let me explain, on the form i have 4 buttons and various other controls and if the user for instance press one of the buttons (to trigger a game event) then the button has focus and i can't capture the movements with the arrow keys. I have setup a breakpoint inside the function to see if it's being called, but that breakpoint never triggers? Any ideas? The most optimal was to have a general KeyDown event that triggers (regardless of what control that currently has focus) and then calls the KeyDown method.

• My service does not start on Windows 2008 (it works on Windows 2003)

  When we install our product on Windows 2008 SP2, couple of services fail to start. After trying different things, we figured out that these service were able to start when "Log on as" is set to "Local system account". This service does need to run as a specific user because it requires access to secure resources. The service did run just fine under this special user account under Windows 2003. I am thinking the problem is related to UAC (user access control). Under interactive mode one can elevate permission by answering the security dialog box. How to do the same for a service? How to configure the service so it runs with necessary permissions? Thanks! Couple of notes I would like to add. One solution I tried is to execute the installer as administrator. The service does get installed. However, it creates another problem. An embedded 3rd party product and its files get installed with admin only rights. So we do need to run the installer as logged in user.

• Programming tips for writing document editors?

  I'm asking this because I'm in the process of writing two such editors for my Mega Man engine, one a tileset editor, and another a level editor. When I say document editor, I mean the superset application type for things like image editors and text editors. All of these share things like toolbars, menu options, and in the case of image editors, and my apps, tool panes. We all know there's tons of advice out there for interface design in these apps, but I'm wondering about programming advice. Specifically, I'm doubting my code designs with the following things: Many menu options toggle various behaviors. What's the proper way to reliably tie the checked state of the option with the status of the behavior? Sometimes it's more complicated, like options being disabled when there's no document loaded. More and more consensus seems to be against using MDI, but how should I control tool panes? For example, I can't figure out how to get the panels to minimize and maximize along with the main window, like Photoshop does. When tool panels are responsible for a particular part of the document, who actually owns that thing? The main window, or the panel class? How do you do communication between the tool panels and the main window? Currently mine is all event based but it seems like there could be a better way. This seems to be a common class of gui application, but I've never seen specific pointers on code design for them. Could you please offer whatever advice or experience you have for writing them?

• How to implement Master-Detail with Multi-Selection in WPF?

  Hi, I plan to create a typical Master-Detail scenario, i.e. a collection of items displayed in a ListView via DataBinding to an ICollectionView, and details about the selected item in a separate group of controls (TextBoxes, NumUpDowns...). No problem so far, actually I have already implemented a pretty similar scenario in an older project. However, it should be possible to select multiple items in the ListView and get the appropriate shared values displayed in the detail view. This means, if all selected items have the same value for a property, this value should be displayed in the detail view. If they do not share the same value, the corresponding control should provide some visual clue for the user indicating this, and no value should be displayed (or an "undefined" state in a CheckBox for example). Now, if the user edits the value, this change should be applied to all selected items. Further requirements are: MVVM compatibility (i.e. not too much code-behind) Extendability (new properties/types can be added later on) Does anyone have experience with such a scenario? Actually, I think this should be a very common scenario. However, I could not find any details on that topic anywhere. Thanks! gehho. PS: In the older project mentioned above, I had a solution using a subclass of the ViewModel which handles the special case of multi-selection. It checked all selected items for equality and returned the appropriate values. However, this approach had some drawbacks and somehow seemed like a hack because (besides other smelly things) it was necessary to break the synchronization between the ListView and the detail view and handle it manually.

• In C#, what thread will Events be handled in?

  Hi, I have attempted to implement a producer/consumer pattern in c#. I have a consumer thread that monitors a shared queue, and a producer thread that places items onto the shared queue. The producer thread is subscribed to receive data...that is, it has an event handler, and just sits around and waits for an OnData event to fire (the data is being sent from a 3rd party api). When it gets the data, it sticks it on the queue so the consumer can handle it. When the OnData event does fire in the producer, I had expected it to be handled by my producer thread. But that doesn't seem to be what is happening. The OnData event seems as if it's being handled on a new thread instead! Is this how .net always works...events are handled on their own thread? Can I control what thread will handle events when they're raised? What if hundreds of events are raised near-simultaneously...would each have its own thread? Thank in advance! Ben

  I am getting ready to take a class at a college on C#. I have been reading up on it a lot and decided to start a fun project. Here is what my project consists of: Main Control Form Configuration Form Arduino Program.cs calls Configuration.cs at start. This is where pin modes for the Arduino are set and where a timer is set. When I set these values, they get sent to MainControl.cs. When I hit the "Save" button in Configuration.cs, a MainControl.cs object is created [[I am correct in that?]] All of those values that were sent by Configuration.cs had corresponding setters that set private static variables in MainControl.cs [[ I don't really know if that is the preferred way, I am most definetly open to any suggestion anyone has]] MainControl.cs uses its default constructor, and this constructor calls a method that creates an arduino object from one of the private variables (serialPort) [[ Using this Arduino class Firmata.NET ]] When the arduino object is created, I know (I guess I do) because the form takes a few seconds to come up (As opposed to not using serial port) My problem is this: I do not understand why nothing can see the object I have been very wordy, I apologize if I wasn't concise. Here is the code: public partial class CMainControl : Form { private static string serialPort; public CMainControl() { InitializeComponent(); createArduino(); updateConfig(); // Change label values to values set in configuration } private void createArduino() { Arduino arduino = new Arduino(serialPort); } In Configuration.cs, when I set the serial port through a combobox, the value is sent to MainControl.cs just fine. • After Navigate2 Method returns S_OK Stuck at READYSTATE of READYSTATE_LOADING

  I am working on a MFC Document View architecture application which has multiple documents and views and a tabbed window interface. I have been tasked with making an automatic switch to another tab on the press of the OK button in one of the other tabs. When the other tab is clicked on it uses a C++ wrapper over IWebBrowser2 to navigate to a specific web page. When this is done manually by clicking on the tab everything is fine and the webpage within the view loads successfully. In my first attempt at doing this the tab successfully switched in response to a call to AfxGetMainWnd()->SendMessageToDescendants(SOME_MESSAGE, ...); however by sending this windows message at the wrong point the application would crash once control returned because the chain of events caused the (modeless) dialog (*) that sent the message, to no longer exist. I then found the correct place to make the call, but now when the other tab is activated, it no longer displays the webpage as it should. To debug this problem I added code to check the READYSTATE in both the situation where it works and the situation where it does not. When the page fails to load (despite the call to Navigate2 returning S_OK), the READYSTATE just stays at READYSTATE_LOADING. Unfortunately now I am to many edits away from when I had it partially working. I have added TRACE statements to the most obvious events such as OnSetFocus, CView::OnActivateView but all traces come out in the same order despite the behaviour being different * hosted in the view

• Chrome troubles...

  Take this site for example: http://pms.rs/contact Everything is just fine just by using this css for textarea: #kontakt input, #kontakt textarea{ width:250px; } #kontakt textarea{ height:150px; } But ofc chrome is always smarter and in it user can drag that bottom right corner of textarea and resize it to the size he likes. Call me control freak, but that is very dumb thing to have if no other browser is using that. On sites like this it is not a big deal, but somewhere it can cover the entire content and for me personaly, i like to limit as much as possible what user can do so he does not break my site(like for example adding too large images in posts on forums...). So i have to do something like this: #kontakt input, #kontakt textarea{ width:250px; } #kontakt textarea{ height:150px; max-height:150px; max-width:250px; } Just so i get chrome to play as all other browsers do... While i was typing this i realised that i really dont have any question per se, but i just thought to share this with SO public, so i will mark this as community wiki. Also some other things i noticed are inputs, i always have to put width for input or textarea just because chrome is always not rendering them as he should.

• Invalid iPhone Application Binary

  I'm trying to upload an application to the iPhone App Store, but I get this error message from iTunes Connect: The binary you uploaded was invalid. The signature was invalid, or it was not signed with an Apple submission certificate. My guess is that it is not properly signed. I have downloaded my App Store distribution certficate, but I can't figure out how to "sign" my application with it. The SDK's documentation about code signing is not very helpful. (FWIW, I can install the app on my iPhone just fine using the development provisioning profile.) However, it is possible that I screwed things up on a more basic level. Here's what I did to try to prepare it for upload: In Xcode, select the Device|Release target Select the target and click the Info button. Change "Code Signing Identity" to "iPhone Distribution", and change "Code Signing Provisioning Profile" to my App Store distribution profile. Build Go to the directory where the built MyApp.app bundle is, control-click and choose "Compress" to create MyApp.zip Upload MyApp.zip to the App Store via iTunes Connect (which resulted in the above error message). Can anybody give me any hints? Edit: Found someone with the same problem. • Ruby on Rails - Static page as start page

  Hello! I am developing an app in RoR which has static and dynamic parts. The static portion is placed in the public/ folder of the app. Now if i have an index.html in my public folder then i will not be able to use the routes configured in my routes.rb The default configurations like map.connect /:controller/:action will not be usable if i have an index.html. So i removed the index html. Now i have a static page startpage.html in my public/ folder which has to be the starting page of the app. And the i have links in it for other static/dynamic pages. The RoR app is hosted in apache and i tried to configure the Virtual Host configuration by adding the DirectoryIndex param so that when ever a request comes for the site it will direct it to the startpage.html but still it takes me to the default controller that i have specified in routes.rb with map.root I dont want to add a dummy controller and action and create a view which has the startpage and configure routes.rb to use it as the root. What i am looking to do here is Basically startpage.html should be my first page in the app served as a static page from the public/ folder. This will then have links to other pages and controllers/actions Here i am not able to apache to redirect to the html page instead of passing on the control to rails application. Directory listing is also enabled by using Options Indexes but still no change. Any pointers anyone?

• JQuery datepicker not working

  I'm completely new to JQuery and MVC. I'm working on a pet project that uses both to learn them and I've hit my first snag. I have a date field and I want to add the JQuery datepicker to the UI. Here is what I have done: Added <script src="../../Scripts/jquery-1.3.2.min.js" type="text/javascript"></script> to the site.master Inside my Create.aspx (View), I have <asp:Content ID="Create" ContentPlaceHolderID="MainContent" runat="server"> <h2> Create a Task</h2> <% Html.RenderPartial("TaskForm"); %> </asp:Content> and inside "TaskForm" (a user control) I have: <label for="dDueDate"> Due Date</label> <%= Html.TextBox("dDueDate",(Model.Task.TaskID > 0 ? string.Format("{0:g}",Model.Task.DueDate) : DateTime.Today.ToString("MM/dd/yyyy"))) %> <script type="text/javascript"> $(document).ready(function() { $("#dDueDate").datepicker(); }); </script> As you can see, the above checks to see if a task has an id 0 (we're not creating a new one) if it does, it uses the date on the task, if not it defaults to today. I would expect the datepicker UI element to show up, but instead I get: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method" on the $("#dDueDate").datepicker(); Ideas? It is probably a very simple mistake, so don't over-analyze. As I said, this is the first time I've dealt with MVC or JQuery so I'm lost as to where to start.
