• Spring - Transaction Readonly

  Hello Gurus! Just wanted your expert opinions on declarative transaction management for Spring. Here is my setup - A. DAO Layer is Plain old JDBC using jdbcTemplete (No hibernate etc) B. Service Layer is POJO with declarative trasnactions as follows - save*, readonly=false, rollback for Throwable Things work fine with above setup. However when I say get*, readonly=true I see errors in my log file saying - Database connection cannot be marked as readonly. This happens for all get* methods in Service Layer. Now my questions - A. Do I have to say get* as readonly? All my get* methods are pure read DB operations. I do not wish to run them in any transaction context. How serious is the above error? B. When I remove the get* confiiguration, I do not see the errors, morever all my simple get* operations are performed without transactions. Is this the way to go? C. Why would anyone want to have transactional methods where readonly = true? Is there any practical significance of this configuration? Thank you! As always your resposes are much appreciated!

  I have a piece of code that sends email.. heres the code This is not working for me. This a remote smtp service ... and i double checked that email web access works fine .. i can login using the gui, recieve and send emails. But when i try to do it through code .. it fails with the message ... {System.Net.Mail.SmtpException: The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.0 No AUTH command has been given. • Can I get a reference to a pending transaction from a SqlConnection object?

  Hey, Suppose someone (other than me) writes the following code and compiles it into an assembly: using (SqlConnection conn = new SqlConnection(connString)) { conn.Open(); using (var transaction = conn.BeginTransaction()) { /* Update something in the database */ /* Then call any registered OnUpdate handlers */ InvokeOnUpdate(conn); transaction.Commit(); } } The call to InvokeOnUpdate(IDbConnection conn) calls out to an event handler that I can implement and register. Thus, in this handler I will have a reference to the IDbConnection object, but I won't have a reference to the pending transaction. Is there any way in which I can get a hold of the transaction? In my OnUpdate handler I want to execute something similar to the following: private void MyOnUpdateHandler(IDbConnection conn) { var cmd = conn.CreateCommand(); cmd.CommandText = someSQLString; cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text; cmd.ExecuteNonQuery(); } However, the call to cmd.ExecuteNonQuery() throws an InvalidOperationException complaining that "ExecuteNonQuery requires the command to have a transaction when the connection assigned to the command is in a pending local transaction. The Transaction property of the command has not been initialized". Can I in any way enlist my SqlCommand cmd with the pending transaction? Can I retrieve a reference to the pending transaction from the IDbConnection object (I'd be happy to use reflection if necessary)?

• Modelling problem - Networked devices with commands

  I encountered a head scratching modelling problem today: We are modelling a physical control system composed of Devices and NetworkDevices. Any example of a Device is a TV. An example of a NetworkDevice is an IR transceiver with Ethernet connection. As you can see, to be able to control the TV over the internet we must connect the Device to the NetworkDevice. There is a one to many relationship between Device and NetworkDevice i.e. TV only has one NetworkDevice (the IR transceiver), but the IR transceiver may control many Devices (e.g. many TVs). So far no problem. The complicated bit is that every Device has a collection of Commands. The type of the Command (e.g IrCommand, SerialCommand - N.B. not currently modelled) depends on the type of NetworkDevice that the Device is connected to. In the current legacy system the Device has a collection of generic Commands (no typing) where fields are "interpreted" depending on the NetworkDevice type. How do I go about modelling this in OOP such that: You can only ever add a Command of the appropriate type, given the NetworkDevice the Device is attached to? If I change the NetworkDevice the Commands collection changes to the appropriate type Make it so the API is simple/elegant/intuitive to use

• Oracle - Getting Select Count(*) from ... as an output parameter in System.Data.OracleClient

  Greetings all, I have a question. I am trying to build a parametrized query to get me the number of rows from a table in Oracle. Rather simple. However I am an Oracle newbie.. I know in SQL Server you can do something like: Select @outputVariable = count(*) from sometable where name = @SomeOtherVariable and then you can set up an Output parameter in the System.Data.SqlClient to get the @outputVariable. I could just use command.ExecuteScaler() as I am only getting one item, and am probably going to end up using that, but at this point, curiosity has got the better of me. What if I had two parameters I wanted back from my query (ie: select max(ColA), min(ColB) into :max, :min.....) Thanks..

When I don't call Application.ProcessMessages application just hangs couse it cannot handle message... So, how to create such a procedure that's wating for socket answer ? Maybe there a way to wait for socket answer without using Application.ProcessMessages ? EDIT I also tried to use TIdTCPServer, for some reasons, the result is the same. • C#+BDE+DBF problem

  I have huge problem: I have lots of .dbf files(~50000) and I need to import them into Oracle database. I open conncection like this: OleDbConnection oConn = new OleDbConnection(); OleDbCommand oCmd = new OleDbCommand(); oConn.ConnectionString = @"Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=" + directory + ";Extended Properties=dBASE IV;User ID=Admin;Password="; oCmd.Connection = oConn; oCmd.CommandText = @"SELECT * FROM " + tablename; try { oConn.Open(); resultTable.Load(oCmd.ExecuteReader()); } catch (Exception ex) { MessageBox.Show(ex.Message); } oConn.Close(); oCmd.Dispose(); oConn.Dispose(); I read them in loop, and then insert into oracle. Everything's fine. BUT: There is about 1000 files, that I can't open. They raise exception "not a table". So I google, and install Borland Database Engine. Now everything wokrs fine....but no. Now, when I'm reading files, on 1024 file exception raises: "System resource exceeded". But I have lots of free resources. When I remove BDE, everything's fine again, no "system resource exceeded" error, but I cant read all files. Help please. PS: Tried using ODBC but nothing changes.

• How to loop video using NetStream in Data Generation Mode

  I'm using a NetStream in Data Generation Mode to play an embeded FLV using appendBytes. When the stream is finished playing, I'd like to loop the FLV file. I'm not sure how to achieve this. I've tried using NetStream.seek(0) and NetStream.appendBytesAction( NetStreamAppendBytesAction.RESET_SEEK ), but then I'm not sure what to do next. If you just try to call appendBytes again after that, it doesn't work, presumably because I'm appending the full byte array which has the FLV header and stuff? I'm not very familiar with how that all works. Any help is greatly appreciated.

• Alternatives to using web.config to store settings (for complex solutions)

  In our web applications, we seperate our Data Access Layers out into their own projects. This creates some problems related to settings. Because the DAL will eventually need to be consumed from perhaps more than one application, web.config does not seem like a good place to keep the connection strings and some of the other DAL-related settings. To solve this, on some of our recent projects we introduced a third project just for settings. We put the setting in a system of .Setting files... With a simple wrapper, the ability to have different settings for various enviroments (Dev, QA, Staging, Production, etc) was easy to achieve. The only problem there is that the settings project (including the .Settings class) compiles into an assembly, so you can't change it without doing a build/deployment, and some of our customers want to be able to configure their projects without Visual Studio. So, is there a best practice for this? I have that sense that I'm reinventing the wheel. Some solutions such as storing settings in a fixed directory on the server in, say, our own XML format occurred to us. But again, I would rather avoid having to re-create encryption for sensitive values and so on. And I would rather keep the solution self-contained if possible. EDIT: The original question did not contain the really penetrating reason that we can't (I think) use web.config ... That puts a few (very good) answers out of context, my bad.

• Playing wave file ends immediatly (C++, Windows)

  I've got a following situation. On a machine there is a Fritz ISDN card. There is a process that is responsible for playing a certain wave file on this device's wave out (ISDN connection is made at startup and made persistent). The scenario is easy, whenever needed the process calls waveOutWrite() on the previously opened wave device (everything initialized without any problems of course) and a callback function waits for MMWOMDONE msg to know that the playback has been finished. Since a few days however (nothing changed neither in the process nor the machine) the MMWOMDONE message comes immediately after calling waveOutWrite() even though the wave lasts a couple of seconds. Again no error is reported, it looks like the file was played but had zero length (which is not the case). I am also sure that waveOutReset() was not called by my process (it would also trigger sending the mentioned message). I already used to have some strange problems in the past that where solved simply by reinstalling TAPI drivers. This time for some reason it is problematic form me to perform that once again and am trying more analytical approach :). Any suggestions what might cause such a behavior? Maybe sth on the other end of the ISDN line?

• Encryption puzzle / How to create a PassStub for a Remote Assistance ticket

  I am trying to create a ticket for Remote Assistance. Part of that requires creating a PassStub parameter. As of the documentation: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc240115(PROT.10).aspx PassStub: The encrypted novice computer's password string. When the Remote Assistance Connection String is sent as a file over e-mail, to provide additional security, a password is used.<16 In part 16 they detail how to create as PassStub. In Windows XP and Windows Server 2003, when a password is used, it is encrypted using PROV_RSA_FULL predefined Cryptographic provider with MD5 hashing and CALG_RC4, the RC4 stream encryption algorithm. As PassStub looks like this in the file: PassStub="LK#6Lh*gCmNDpj" If you want to generate one yourself run msra.exe in Vista or run the Remote Assistance tool in WinXP. The documentation says this stub is the result of the function CryptEncrypt with the key derived from the password and encrypted with the session id (Those are also in the ticket file). The problem is that CryptEncrypt produces a binary output way larger then the 15 byte PassStub. Also the PassStub isn't encoding in any way I've seen before. Some interesting things about the PassStub encoding. After doing statistical analysis the 3rd char is always a one of: !#$&()+-=@^. Only symbols seen everywhere are: *_ . Otherwise the valid characters are 0-9 a-z A-Z. There are a total of 75 valid characters and they are always 15 bytes. Running msra.exe with the same password always generates a different PassStub, indicating that it is not a direct hash but includes the rasessionid as they say. Some other ideas I've had is that it is not the direct result of CryptEncrypt, but a result of the rasessionid in the MD5 hash. In MS-RA (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc240013(PROT.10).aspx). The "PassStub Novice" is simply hex encoded, and looks to be the right length. The problem is I have no idea how to go from any hash to way the PassStub looks like.

  I've uploaded a .cshtml website to a surftown server, and I got some problems running the code. But I have a problem with it running the Razor code. • Phonegap bluetooth plugin not working

  First time poster here , so I'm sorry if this question is asked incorrect or if there are any issues. I'm working on a phonegap app for which I need to be able to set up a bluetooth connection between a tablet (android in this case) and a Win CE PC. Currently i'm trying to get the bluetooth part to work on the tablet and i'm using the plug in you can find at https://github.com/tanelih/phonegap-bluetooth-plugin And for the momemt I'm just trying to enable and disable the Bluetooth on the device. In my bluetoothpage.js file i'm using the following method window.bluetooth.prototype.enable(bluetoothTestSucces(),bluetoothTestFail()); The bluetoothTestSucces and bluetoothTestFail functions just show an alert, nothing else. And if i understand the working of phonegap plugins correctly this uses the following code in my bluetooth.js file Bluetooth.prototype.enable = function(onSuccess, onError) { exec(onSuccess, onError, "Bluetooth", "enable", []); } which calls private void enable(JSONArray args, CallbackContext callbackCtx) { try { _bluetooth.enable(); callbackCtx.success(); } catch(Exception e) { this.error(callbackCtx, e.getMessage(), BluetoothError.ERR_UNKNOWN); } } in my BluetoothPlugin.java file. And if the java file returns Succes bluetoothTestSucces() is used and if the java file returns an error bluetoothTestFail() is used. But for some reason it runs both and does not turn on bluetooth on my device. I'm almost certain I've forgotten a link to a file or have linked it wrong somewhere. But I've followed the instructions that were included in the plugin. • How to handle activity life cycle involving sockets in Android?

  Hello all, I have an Android activity which in turn starts a thread. In the thread I open a persistent TCP socket connection. When the socket connects to the server dynamic data is downloaded. The thread sends messages using Handler-class to the activity when data has been received. Now if the user happens to switch from portrait to landscape mode the activity gets an onDestroy call. At this moment I close the socket and stop the thread. When Android has switched landscape mode it calls onCreate yet again and I have to do a socket re-connect. Also, all of the data the activity received needs to be downloaded once more because the server does not have the ability to know what has been sent before, i.e. there is no "resume" feature. Thus the problem is that there is alot of data which is resent all the time when landscape mode is changed. What are my options here? Should I create a service which handles the socket traffic towards the server thus I always got all the data which the server has sent in the service. Or should I disable landscape mode all together perhaps? Or would my best bet be to rewrite my server which is a VERY BIG job :-) All input is welcome :-) / Henrik

• Linq2SQL vs NHibernate performance (have I gone mad?)

  I have written the following tests to compare performance of Linq2SQL and NHibernate and I find results to be somewhat strange. Mappings are straight forward and identical for both. Both are running against a live DB. Although I'm not deleting Campaigns in case of Linq, but that shouldn't affect performance by more than 10 ms. • UIView, UIScrollView and UITextFields problem calling Method

  I have a view with several embedded UITextFields, this UIView is subordinated to a UIScrollView in IB. Each text field is supposed to invoke a method called updateText defined in the viewcontroller implementation file when the user is done editing the field. For some reason, the method updateText never gets invoked. Anyone have any ideas how to go about fixing this? The method fired off just fine when the UIScrollView was not present in the project but the keyboard would cover the text fields during input, which was annoying. Now my textfields move up above the keyboard when it appears, but won't fire off the method when done editing. • Easy bidirectional communication via P2P NetStream

  I've been looking into the P2P support in Flash 10, using Adobe Stratus service. I have successfully been able to send data from one user to another, put my problem is that I haven't figured out how to send data back in some easy way (or as some kind of response to the first call). What I'm currently doing; First set up a connection with Stratus service nc = new NetConnection(); nc.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, ncStatusHandler); nc.connect(APPLICATION_URL + DEVELOPER_KEY); On the "server" side I do: sendStream = new NetStream(nc, NetStream.DIRECT_CONNECTIONS); sendStream.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, sendStreamHandler); sendStream.publish("file"); And on the "client" side: // remoteFileID.text is manually copied by the user from the server (which is nc.nearID). recvStream = new NetStream(nc, remoteFileID.text); recvStream.client = this; recvStream.addEventListener(NetStatusEvent.NET_STATUS, recvStreamHandler); recvStream.play("file"); Then I call a remote function on the client: ... sendStream.send("aRemoteFunction", parameterData); ... Now my problem; I want to do the same from the client to the server, to notify that everything went well, or something failed. From what I understand, I will have to setup a new NetStream from the client to the server (i.e publish on the client and play on the server). But to accomplish this, the server need to know the nc.nearID on the client. Is it possible to get that ID without forcing the user to manually copy it from the client to server? Or, is there an easier way for the client to talk back to the server that I am missing?

• Dumping an ADODB recordset to XML, then back to a recordset, then saving to the db

However what I really want to do is save all of the data in res to a table in a completely different database. We can assume that some_table already exists in this other database and has the exact same structure as the table I originally queried to make the XML. • Windows Workflow Foundation: Recommendations how to design architecture

  We are running several the same ASP.NET applications (one per customer) based on our custom framework (libraries). Each application use its own database (Initial Catalog in the term of connection string). Now we would like to add workflow capability (of course 4.0 ;) to the applications. So the particular workflows will be the same for all the applications only some initial settings of each workflow can vary, e.g. in one application the e-mail will be send to the user X, but in other application to the user Y. I have several general questions how to design architecture: (1) Can be the workflow database shared for all the applications? (2) Where to host workflow engine - inside our custom windows NT service or inside IIS? What are the criteria to choose the right host? (3) How the workflow engine should communicate with applications? Should application call some WCF endpoint API configured in workflow host or vice verse - should each application provide WCF endpoint API and workflow engine will call it? How then the workflow engine will identify applications? Both cases requires probably some application identifier as a parameter in API calls? (4) We would like to also store some information to the application databases based on the workflow states. Is it possible? Thanks for suggestions!

  I am starting one POS (Point of sale) project. Targeting system is going to be written in C# .NET 2 WinForms and as main database server We are going to use MS-SQL Server. As we have a lot of POS devices in chain for one store I will love to have backend local data base system on each POS device. Scenario are following: When main server goes down!! POS application should continue working "off-line" with local database, until connection to main server come up again. Now I am in dilemma which local database is going to be most adoptable for me. DBF with extended Library,"Respect for good old DBFs but that era is behind Me with clipper and DBFs" MS Access Sqlite "Mostly like for now, but I am afraid how it is going to pair with MS SQL do they have same Data taypes". I know that in this SO is a lot of subjective data, but at least can someone recommended some others lite database system, or things that I shod most take attention before I choice database.
