• MVVM and Animations in Silverlight

  I wanted to spin an icon to show progress to my user while some content was downloading. I'm using MVVM (aren't you) and made a satisfactory Storyboard to spin the icon. However, it took longer than expected to trigger that animation from my ViewModel's property.I used a combination of the GoToState action and the DataTrigger from the Microsoft.Expression.Interactions dll as described here.Then I had problems getting it to start until I found this approach that saved the day. • High traffic chat - how to check if there is new message and show it for all users

  I already had question about this but obviously it was not accepted very well, apparently too long when it's actually more information so you could have given me better answer. Ok, I will be much clearer now. Best possible logic to develop scalable chat in terms of stability, storing/reading messages on chat, updating chat on new message for all users etc.? I have most of this developed, the logic I think I miss is -- check if there is new message and show it for all users. I have this implemented but it crashes the site due to its traffic of 300k-400k people, so that's my main question. The chat is PHP based and uses Pusher (www.pusher.com) for instant messaging but it lacks what I need because it's more like a websocket. I'm using hardcoded files to keep messages (want to avoid database as much as possible). It's a no extension type of file, I'm sure you know. I'm getting crash with $fp = fopen(..., "w"); // pretend ... is the path and filename fwrite($fp, $msg); //hardcode the message fclose($fp); where $msg is the message itself. I'm having 1 file per message. I show last 150 messages = 150 file accesses and reads, yeah it's too much I guess. I have better logic now which I'm pursuing and that is 1 file with last 50-100 messages at all time. Sure it should be much better. How does it crash, that's the trickiest part because everything seems ordinary, believe me it is difficult to determine what exactly crashes the site, but in like 5 minutes when I try to open the site it's gone, then I put the old content without chat and is back online again. I'm having jquery post every 1 second to check if there is new message. I'm using timestamp in a special file where I keep the time last message was sent and if ((time() - time in file) <= 2) = reload last 150 messages including the last one. Too much input/output, write/read or however to say it I think is what crashes the site.

• Strangling the life out of Software Testing

  I recently did a course at the local university on Software Engineering. At the beginning of the course I looked over the outline of the subject and there seemed to be some really good content. It covered traditional & agile project methodologies, some general communication and modelling chapters and finished off with testing. I was particularly excited to see the section on testing as this was something I learnt on my own and see great value in. The course has now just ended and I am very disappointed. I now know one of the reasons why so few people i.e. in my region do Test Driven Development, or perform even basic testing methodologies. The topic was to academic! Yes, you might be able to list 4 different types of black box test approaches vs. white box test approaches and describe the characteristics of Smoke Tests, but never during course did we see an example of an actual test or how it might be implemented! In fact, if I did not have personal experience of applying testing in actual projects, I wouldn’t even know what a unit test looked like. Now, what worries me is the following… It took us 6 months to cover the course material, other students more than likely came out of that course with little appreciation of the subject – in fact they now have a very complex view of what a test is – so complex that I think most of them will never attempt it again on their own. Secondly, imagine studying to be a dentist without ever actually seeing a tooth? Yes, you might be able to describe a tooth, and know what it is made out of – but nobody would want a dentist who has never seen a tooth to operate on them. Yet somehow we expect people studying software engineering to do the same? This is not right. Now, before I finish my rant let me say that I know this is not the same everywhere in the world, and that there needs to be a balance on practical implementation and academic understanding – I am just disappointed that this does not seem to be happening at the institution that I am currently studying at ;-( Please, if you happen to be a lecturer or teacher reading this post – a combination of theory and practical's goes a long way. We need to up the quality of software being produced and that starts at learner level!

• How do I server multiple domains from the same directory and codebase without my configuraton breaking when apache.conf is overwritten?

  I have 20 domains on a VPS running cPanel. One public_html is filled with code, the remaining 19 are symbolic links to that one. (For example, assets is a directory within public_html ... for the 19 others, there's a symbolic link to that directory in each each accounts public_html dir.) It's all PHP / MySQL database driven, with content changing depending on the domain. It works like a charm, assuming cPanel has suExec enabled correctly, and assuming apache.conf does NOT have SymLinksIfOwnerMatch enabled. However, every few weeks, my apache.conf is mysteriously overwritten, re-enabling SymLinksIfOwnerMatch, and disabling all 19 linked sites for as long as it takes for me to notice. Here's the offending line in apache.conf: <Directory "/"> AllowOverride All Options ExecCGI FollowSymLinks IncludesNOEXEC Indexes SymLinksIfOwnerMatch </Directory> The addition of SymLinksIfOwnerMatch disables the sites in a strange way ... the html is generated correctly, but all css/js/image in the html fails to load. Clicking any link redirects to /. And I have no idea why. Again, all of this works great, except when SymLinksIfOwnerMatch gets added back into apache.conf. Since I've failed to find the cause of whatever cPanel/security update is overwriting apache.conf, I thought there might be a more correct way to accomplish my goal using group permissions. I've created a 'www' group, added all accounts to the group, and chmod -R'd the code source to use that group. Everything is 644 or 755. But doesn't seem to be enough. My unix isn't that strong. Do you need to restart something for group changes to take effect? Probably not. Anyways, I'm entering unknown territory. Can anyone recommend the right way to configure a website for multiple sites using one codebase that doesn't rely on apache.conf?

• Git on Windows 7 expecting Linux? /dev/null not found error

  I have installed git (not GitHub) on Windows 7 x64 Home Premium, and I cannot get it to work. Opening Git Bash outputs the following: Welcome to Git (version 1.9.4-preview20140815) Run 'git help git' to display the help index. Run 'get help <command>' to display help for specific commands. sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory sh.exe": /dev/null: No such file or directory Andy@ANDY-DELL ~ $ If I open the Git GUI, I get a this box: Title: git-gui: fatal error Content: fatal: open /dev/null or dup failed: No such file or directory Git Gui requires Git 1.5.0 or later. I also tried GitHub for Windows, but I got an internet connection error when attempting to clone a repo, even though my connection is fine. Is this possibly related? I have learned so far that /dev/null is the Linux version of the Windows NUL, but why is it trying to do this on Windows? Thanks in advance.

  I'm trying to configure Dynamic DNS client on my router with dd-wrt (v24-sp2) firmware so it would dynamically change IP address in one of the DNS records. • "Error in the Site Data Web Service." when performing crawl

  Installed SharePoint Services v3 (SP2, october 2009 cumulative updates, Language Pack), attached to a content database I had previously (all works). Installed Search server 2008 Express (with language pack) on top of WSS and crawl does not work. However it works for newly created web application + database. Was playing around with accounts, permissions to try get it working. Currently I have WSS_Crawler account with such permissions: Office Search Server runs with WSS_Crawler account Config database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler Content database has read permissions for WSS_Crawler WSS_Crawler is owner of search database. Added WSS_Crawler to SQL server browser user group and administrator Yes, i'v given more permissions than needed, but it doesn't even work with that and i don't know if its permission problem or what. Crawl log says there is Error in the Site Data Web Service., nothing more. There were known issues with a similar error: Error in the Site Data Web Service. (Value does not fall within the expected range.), but this is not the case as thats an old issue and i hope it has been included in SP2... Logs are from olders to newest (descending order). They don't appear to be very helpful. • Installed SQL Server 2008 and now TFS is broken.

  Hi, My W2K3 server was running TFS 2008 SP1, SQL Server 2005 Development edition. I installed SQL Server 2008 Standard. I installed it while leaving SQL Server 2005 alone. Upgrading was not possible due to the differences in editions of the SQL Servers. Now TFS is broken. On a client computer, if I go Team - Connect to Team Foundation Server, I get this error: Team Foundation services are not available from server myserver. Technical information (for administrator): TF30059: Fatal error while initializing web service. So I head on over to my event viewer on the server. Under Application, I see one warning and two errors. • Watchguard Firewall WebBlocker Regular Expression for Multiple Domains?

  I'm pretty sure this is really a regex question, so you can skip to REGEX QUESTION if you want to skip the background. Our primary firewall is a Watchguard X750e running Fireware XTM v11.2. We're using webblocker to block most of the categories, and I'm allowing needed sites as they arise. Some sites are simple to add as exceptions, like Pandora radio. That one is just a pattern matched exception with "padnora.com/" as the pattern. All traffic from anywhere on pandora.com is allowed. I'm running into trouble on more sophisticated domains that reference content off of their base domains. We'll take GrooveShark as a sample. If you go to http://grooveshark.com/ and view page source, you'll see hrefs referring to gs-cdn.net as well as grooveshar.com. So adding a WebBlocker exception to grooveshark.com/ is not effective, and I have to add a second rule allowing gs-cdn.net/ as well. I see that the WebBlocker allows regex rules, so what I'd like to do in situations like this is create a single regex rule that allows traffic to all the needed domains. REGEX QUESTION: I'd like to try a regex that matches grooveshark.com/ and gs-cdn.net/. If anybody can help me write that regex, I'd appreciate it. Here is what is in the WatchGuard documentation from that section: Regular expression Regular expression matches use a Perl-compatible regular expression to make a match. For example, .[onc][eor][gtm] matches .org, .net, .com, or any other three-letter combination of one letter from each bracket, in order. Be sure to drop the leading “http://” Supports wild cards used in shell script. For example, the expression “(www)?.watchguard.[com|org|net]” will match URL paths including www.watchguard.com, www.watchguard.net, and www.watchguard.org. Thanks all!

• "file not found" error while commiting

  I have a working copy, checked out from SVN repository. When i'm trying to commit, i get following error: svn: File not found: revision 57, path '/trunk/path/to/my/file/logo-mini.jpg' I've found this file in the repo and noticed, that it has only one revision - 58. I don't understand, why SVN complains about this file, when it is presented and why it points to revision 57 instead of 58 ? I've also renamed the grand-grand-grand-parent folder of this file.   So i am trying to understand subnetting. I understand that you can take 192.168.0.0/24 domain and break it up in 2 subnets. 192.168.0.0/25 and 192.168.0.128/25 .. so what if i need to create 2 more subnets inside both of those above subnets. What if i need to create 2 subnets, which have 2 more subnets inside them and each of those 2 subnets have 2 hosts. As per my calculation, this would be something like. top 2 subnets: 192.168.0.0/25 and 192.168.0.128/25 subnets of 192.168.0.0/25: 192.168.0.0/26 - 192.168.0.128/26 subnets of 192.168.0.128/25: 192.168.0.128/26 - 192.168.0.192/26 hosts of 192.168.0.0/25: 192.168.0.1/25 - 192.168.0.2/25 hosts of 192.168.0.128/25: 192.168.0.129/25 - 192.168.0.130/25 hosts of 192.168.0.0/26: 192.168.0.1/26 - 192.168.0.2/26 hosts of 192.168.0.128/26: 192.168.0.129/26 - 192.168.0.130/26 hosts of 192.168.0.128/26: 192.168.0.129/26 - 192.168.0.130/26 hosts of 192.168.0.192/26: 192.168.0.193/26 - 192.168.0.194/26 The above doesnt seem right, i am moving down like a tree, however the subnet mask and IPs are being repeated, i am just add 1 to /x and making the ips from there. • How to manage sub-domains on WinHost with IIS7 URL Rewrite 2.0?

  I'm trying out WinHost and I'm running into some issues with sub-domains. On WinHost, you can have multiple sub-domains per hosting account, but each sub-domain points to the root website. E.g. you can have www.example.com, sub1.example.com, and sub2.example.com but all of them display the content at http://www.example.com/. Other Hosts allow you to point sub-domains to a sub folder in your website. This would allow you to point sub1.example.com to /sub1, sub2.example.com to /sub2 and www.example.com to /. WinHost recommends using an asp/aspx page to redirect http://sub1.example.com to http://sub1.example.com/sub1, which points to /sub1. While that would work, I'd like to not have the subdomain in the url twice. So I tried using IIS7 URL Rewrite to point http://sub1.example.com to /sub1. Ben Powell describes this in detail on his blog. This is great, except Request.ApplicationPath is now /sub1/path/to/current/page.aspx, which breaks ASP.Net Themes (and probably other stuff too). What can I do to fix the ApplicationPath? Is there a better way to accomplish this?

• BAT file will not run from Task Scheduler but will from Command Line

  I'm trying to run a BAT script from Task Scheduler in Windows 2008 R2 and it runs for 3 seconds and then stops. It says it successfully completes but I know it doesn't. I can run this script from the command line directly, and it runs just fine. The bat file I'm running actually deletes files older than 7 days using "forfiles" then I'm mapping a network drive, moving the files across the network using robocopy, and then closing the network connection. I have taken the network and copy options out of the file and it still does the same thing.   A family member of mine recently went on vacation and turned off their computer, something they normally do not do, upon returning home it would not turn on and now returns the error message below. Generally friends and family come to me for help with computers and I have no problem, however this time I am a bit stumped. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. As you can see the error message is: Status: 0xc000000e Info: The best selection failed because a required device is inaccessible. Before going to this error message it briefly flashes the Windows loading screen. I have been able to confirm through the Windows RE Command Line and the dir command that the C: drive is accessible and likely is just suffering a bootup issue. I have tried: Launching the repair process discussed in the error message three times however each time it requires a restart and then returns to the same error message. Changing the boot order to be hard drive first Getting into safe mode; F8 just results in the same error message before I can get to the menu to select safe mode I have checked to make sure the BCD (bcdedit, Boot Configuration Data) is still intact as per https://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH160475 I plan to try (but would like additional comments on): sfc /scannow; requires a restart and thus will likely result in the error message again A memory scan Bootrec as per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392#method1 Swapping IDE cables/ports Resetting the BIOS I noticed others with similar issues around the web are dual-booting however this machine is not setup in a dual-boot environment. Additionally at one point this error message supposedly showed up before I started working on the computer: The instruction at 0xfbe2584d referenced memory at 0x00000008. The memory could not be read. As previously stated any additional suggestions or words of advice would be greatly apprecaited.

• WS2008 subst in Logon script does not "stick"

  I have a terminal server environment exclusively with Windows Server 2008. My problem is that I need to "map" a drive letter to each users Temp folder. This is due to a legacy app that requries a separate Temp folder for each user but which does not understand %temp%. So, just add "subst t: %temp%" to the logon script, right? The problem is that, even though the command runs, the subst doesn't "stick" and the user doesn't get a T: drive. Here is what I have tried; The simplest version: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "subst T: %temp%", 2, True That didn't work, so tried this for more debug information: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") Set procEnv = WinShell.Environment("Process") wscript.echo(procEnv("TEMP")) tempDir = procEnv("TEMP") WinShell.Run "subst T: " & tempDir, 3, True This shows me the correct temp path when the user logs in - but still no T: Drive. Decided to resort to brute force and put this in my login script: 'Mapping a temp drive Set WinShell = WScript.CreateObject("WScript.Shell") WinShell.Run "\\domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd", 3, True where \domain\sysvol\esl.hosted\scripts\tempdir.cmd has this content: echo on subst t: %temp% pause When I log in with the above then the command window opens up and I can see the subst command being executed correctly, with the correct path. But still no T: drive. I have tried running all of the above scripts outside of a login script and they always work perfectly - this problem only occurs when doing it from inside a login script. I found a passing reference on an MSFN forum about a similar problem when the user is already logged on to another machine - but I have this problem even without being logged on to another machine. Any suggestion on how to overcome this will be much appreciated.

• Zscaler. Certs, cookies, and port 80 traffic

  So I work at HQ for a large company that shall remain nameless. We use Zscaler and I had to roll out a 2048 cert per zscaler's request. People around me at work dont understand the technology and think that the cert's are what is allowing internet connectivity. From my understanding(and please chime in) is the cookie located C:\Users\$$$$$$4$$\AppData\Roaming\Macromedia\Flash Player#SharedObjects\Q3JQJQJV\gateway.zscaler.net\zscaler.swf here that gets created when you provide your creds the first time you use the browser. The cert's are just simply a way of inspecting the SSL traffic as zscaler had no way of doing this before without them. They are essentially using the classic MITM attack to parse your SSL traffic. Gmail is smart enough to recognize this as you get a warning. My question is this, is there a product or service that I can use to verify my web browser when at home(I.E. off company network) isn't still getting routed to zscaler's cloud? If i do a tracert that will work fine. It's the port 80 and 443 web traffic zscaler and my company is after. I would like to verify that when I'm off their premise that my web traffic is using only my isp and the path to whatever content I'm searching for. Do the cert's i'm pushing and browser authentication do something behind the curtain that forces web traffic to get routed to zscaler? I searched quite a bit and would very much like to know if I'm ever off company scrutiny. I do know zscaler offers the service to force the scenario im asking about. Can I prove how my web traffic is getting routed? Thanks for any insight. I've been a fan for a long time and your guy's kung fu is very strong:-)

  I'm trying to solve a problem with renaming files over WebDav. Our stack consists of a single machine, serving content through Nginx, Varnish and Apache. When you try to rename a file, the operation fails with the stack that we're currently using. To connect to WebDav, a client program must: Connect over https://host:443 to NginX NginX unwraps and forwards the request to a Varnish server on http://localhost:81 Varnish forwards the request to Apache on http://localhost:82, which offers a session via mod_dav Here's an example of a failed rename: $ cadaver https://webdav.domain/ Authentication required for Webdav on server `webdav.domain': Username: user Password: dav:/> cd sandbox dav:/sandbox/> mkdir test Creating `test': succeeded. dav:/sandbox/> ls Listing collection `/sandbox/': succeeded. Some other Restrictions: Investigations into NginX's Webdav modules show that it doesn't really fit our needs, and forwarding webdav traffic to Apache isn't an option because we don't want to enable Apache SSL. Are there any ways to trick mod_dav to forward to another host? I'm open to ideas :).

• Toshiba Portege M400 screen rotation not working under Windows 7 x64

  I have installed Windows 7 on my Toshiba Portege M400. This in itself was relatively tricky.* However, the button utilities aren't quite working for me. One of the buttons tries to launch the Toshiba Assist program, which doesn't appear to be available under Windows 7 for the M400, but this I can live without. More important is that the screen won't rotate as it is supposed to when you hold the "cancel" (X in a circle) button on the bezel. The PC is set to run "C:\Program Files (x860\Toshiba\Toshiba Rotation Utility\phtrot.exe". There is a "trot.exe" file in the same directory (the former appears to be to cause slightly different behaviour when rotation is done by press and hold). Neither of these programs rotates the screen either by using the buttons or from the command line. The screen is rotating normally when switching from tablet to laptop mode, so there does not appear to be an inherent problem with rotation. I'd just like to be able to use the buttons on the side of the screen to change the screen orientation. Windows XP used to have a "setrot" utility to do this, but that seems to have gone in Windows 7 Thanks for your help. *Just in case anyone comes looking for how to do this, you need to extract driver files from http://cdgenp01.csd.toshiba.com/content/support/downloads/util_raid_os2007252a.exe, which does not seem to be listed among the available files for the m400. This executable contains the SATA interface drivers that will need to be loaded by the installer before it can see your hard disk drive. It needs to be unpacked and the files copied to a USB key which they can then be loaded from in the install process. The utilities etc. for installation post windows install are all available from the Toshiba USA support website.
