• Win7 no longer available after installing 12.04

  I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 but my Windows 7 partition seems to have been lost. It is in sda2. Can anyone help me how to get this Windows 7 partition back without having to reinstall Windows 7? • UnsatisfiedLinkError: no swt-gtk-4233

  I'm a Java newbie who just a made a simple Java program using SWT for GUI via eclipse Juno. The code was working and the program was able to run inside eclipse, so I compiled it and made it a runnable jar file so it can be run outside eclipse. I tried to run it using the terminal and this error came up. Exception in thread "main" java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError: Could not load SWT library. • Inaccurate bandwidth limiting in altq queues

  I'm setting up an environment where I have one Linux server, one OpenBSD router and one Linux client and I want to be able to limit how much bandwidth the client should be able to use. I've been performing these tests with "netcat" and "time" (using time to measure the time of the transfer with netcat), and what happens when trying these tests (using the TCP protocol, the queues will for some reason not work with UDP) is that the queues aren't exact at all. For example: when setting a bandwidth limit of 10mbit, the client cannot use more than five mbits, when setting a limit of 100mbit, the client cannot use more than around 50mbit.   I have configured a shared folder between the Windows host and Ubuntu guest. The folder mounts at start up but its empty(It also has a padlock sign.). I have to run the command below to access its content(the padlock sign disappears). sudo mount.vboxsf media ~/media How can i configure it to be run automatically at start up. I've tried adding to the start up programs but nothing happens. Am new to Linux so try to put your answer in a layman's language. Thanks.

• MS Windows issue - "Filename or extension is too long"

  I run Microsoft windows on a few of my machines. I don't know if many people know about this issue in the OS but you can't have very long filenames, from what I know Linux can have longer names, I have never run into this issue on my Linux machines. Anyway I run into issues whenever copying folders & files to backup drives. I manually backup of my data, finding and changing names of files, this is very very tedious. Is there a software tool to shorten folders or filenames that are found to be to long on Windows? I have drive image duplication software which does the job but in a way that I don't like, plus moving files can become a hassle at times if the names are too long to copy.

• Cannot access windows share

  I have an accounting program specifically tailored to the IT industry, its called Fincon (exe based). It basically works on a client to server directory base system. the server is currently running on a windows 7 machine with a NTFS partition. I have installed Wine. Have the shared Windows directory mounted with what I assume is the correct command for such being (mount -tsmbfs //servername/sharedir /mnt/fincon -0 usename=username,password=password). I can see the shared dir although it does take a bit long to access it on the Ubuntu machine via the mapped directory but instant via normal network browsing. I have also set up the mapped directory to my D: drive in Wine and have pointed the fincon.ini to read server field from D: directly. Here's my issue, it seems that for some odd reason I cant write to the mapped directory from Ubuntu, yet I can with my Windows machines, the permissions are set correct on the Windows 7 share and I really dunno what I'm missing. I'm quite a Linux noob just switched yesterday. Thanks guys for any help in this would be quite appreciated. As I'm pulling out my hair here and really want to migrate my work PCs to a Linux OS as it just gives less issues than Windows does ever.

• modprobe not found at all

  I know that a lot of people had problems finding modprobe which was mostely due to an unconfigured $PATH. This time however I logged into a machine (Linux mymachine 2.6.32-6-pve #1 SMP Mon Jan 23 08:27:52 CET 2012 i686 GNU/Linux with root rights) and modprobe wasn't found at all. This are the steps I have taken so far: - which modprobe => no results - locate modprobe => no results - my $PATH = /usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin:/usr/bin/X11: - find / -name "modprobe*" => /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe - cat /proc/sys/kernel/modprobe => /sbin/modprobe - /sbin/modprobe => no such file or directory Ass you can see no modprobe at all. Does anyone else has a suggestion/ sollution so I can use modprobe?

• I can't get grub menu to show up during boot

  After trying (and failing) to install better ATI drivers in 11.10, I've somehow lost my grub menu at boot time. The screen does change to the familiar purple colour, but instead of a list of boot options it's just blank solid colour, and then disappears quickly and boots into the default entry normally. How can I get the bootloader back? I've tried sudo update-grub and also various different combinations of resolutions and colour depths in startupmanager application with no success (640x480, 1024x768, 1600x1200, 16 bits, 8 bits, 10 second delay, 7 second delay, 2 second delay...) edit: I have already tried holding down Shift during bootup and it does not seem to change the behaviour. I get the message "GRUB Loading" in the terminal, but then the place where the grub menu normally appears I get a solid blank magenta screen for a while. • What's the typical latency for key strokes using an ssh connection on a local wifi network?

  I develop software on a Macbook Air 1.6 Ghz but find running Rails test suites and generators on this computer very slow. I'm thinking about buying a Linux tower to put on my local wireless network to do my Rails development on. I would want to use my Macbook Air and ssh into the Linux box and do my development with Gnu Screen, vim, etc. Can I expect the keystroke and echo latency for a ssh session between two machines on a local wireless network to be negligible? Does anyone develop using this kind of local setup?

• What could be wrong with my CD drive and how do you fix it?

  My CD drive hasn't worked in about 8 months. I was burning CDs in a hurry and pulled it out because it was taking too long (probably an average amount of time). Im running a laptop (Toshiba Satellite A505-6965) that uses a slot drive. Now my computer doesn't accept CDs. It used to pull them in but it doesn't anymore. Ive heard it make odd noises a few times but thats it. The slot is these spongey things and Ive managed to peek into the drive with a flashlight and theres nothing in the way, really. Could someone explain the mechanics of what happened and if it would be possible to fix it? If itd be possible to fix it through Linux that would be great since I keep getting the BSOD (0x0000007B) and am going to try reinstalling Windows 7. But I can't really do that since I don't have a USB drive larger than 2 GB (Windows is about 4 GB) so Im relying on Linux ATM.

  I'm running Windows 7 inside virtualbox on a linux host. I have shared my linux filesystem so it's accesible in Windows under \vboxsvr\sharename. I've mounted this share on S:. For most software, it works fine. Adobe software like Photoshop has problems with it though. I can read from S: just fine, but if I try to save something it gives me the message "There are no more files". How can I make it able to write to the share?

• Windows 8.1 - unfixable grub

  I have a Gigabyte laptop that came with secure boot and windows 8. After a bit of battling, I managed to get my dual boot with Ubuntu 13.10.. Anyway, I upgraded zindows to 8.1, now grub is gone. I restarted from a live CD and chrooted to my drive. I used boot-repair multiple times (with successful output) both in default and with some advanced options; also reinstalled grub manually... Each time it tries once to boot to grub but gives a message for a very short amount of time. I recorded it and it is a regular bios message "Rebbot and Select proper Boot device of Insert Boot media in selected boot device and press a key" I even tried something called EasyBCD under winblows, it shows the correct boot options, but same there, it is unable to make the linux partition fire up. Anyway, no way to boot my linux box. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this? No need to redirect me to another post with grub reinstall or boot-repair, seen them all... I am thinking of trying this other boot loader, refind, to see if it works http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/index.html Also re-reading this bios message, I'm thinking my partition might not have a boot flag anymore... I'll try that too with parted. Although both grub and win 8 are supposed to fire up from the same boot partition (the EFI one) Please help! thx

• Graphical glitches on grub and ubuntu desktop

  I've decided to install ubuntu but neither ubuntu or any other linux distro won't even get to the desktop screen or work after getting there. On windows 8, everything is just fine. my new video card works perfectly and I have no problem with anything about it. then when I try to boot from ubuntu with wubi or with usb everything goes like this: 1) Grub screen...no problem at all, colors are just fine everything looks okay 2) and then linux boot screen...weird background color, over the backround there are vertical stripes of red-orange dots. but on the ubuntu logo and text, there are no dots at all! -I mean its shape is perfect- 3) desktop is about the start but * vertical stripes of red colored dots are all over the unity screen*. then when I click on ubuntu's menu, it usually switches to black screen saying something about "panic occured"...and then it restarts or it gives no respond at all. problems started after putting hd 6570 video card on my asus m5a78lm-lx video card which has amd phenom II X4 processor on it. I've searched to find something but there was no similar question that's why I'm almost sure it is kind of unique. again, I'm writing on Windows 8 right now and everything works and looks perfect. so far I've updated bios and anyone knows anything to solve this?

• Running IPv4 program in IPv6 network

  I have an IPv4 windows client program and IPv4 Linux server. What I need is to run them in pure IPv6 network, although machines have dual stack. At the beginning I thought it's not a problem: I'll use 4in6 protocol (rfc2473) and that's all. I found a simple guide for Linux configuration here, but when I started to configuring windows 7, I couldn't find how to do it. There are plenty of info on how to tunnel IPv6 over IPv4 (6in4, Teredo) but not an opposite. Does anyone know how to do it? Thank you.

• How can we best petition to bring Adobe creative software to Ubuntu?

  Now I know its not as simple as asking for Adobe to support their design software on Ubuntu, but is there a way for the community and Canonical to make known to Adobe the rapidly growing amount of Linux users, and their desire for this great set of tools OFFICIALLY? I know that many of the answers I receive might be of the fashion "Its not going to happen", "use the free tools provided" or "Who knows it might happen in the near future", but this IS not what I am looking for. I have noticed, on sites like www.OmgUbuntu.com, there are links to pages where people can "like" the idea. Is there a way to try and get the whole community on board with this one, even Canonical, and as stated above, put forward this proposal to Adobe. The current requests for an Adobe CS, for Linux, are in dribs and drabs scattered all of the internet. Now is the best time to come up with productive solutions on how we can best gather statistics on the amount of people willing to buy the Adobe CS. These are the words of an Adobe employee: "I have forwarded this feedback on to the appropriate team who will consider it for future releases of Adobe software." The larger amount of people we have unified in the ONE community proposal, the greater chance we have of getting the software. How can we make this happen?

• Are Windows partitions gone?

  I had Windows 7 on my laptop (factory setting), because of some performance issues, I decided to use recovery options to restore it to its factory condition but I don't know what has happened or what I have done that the whole operating system was gone after playing around with recovery options from the boot menu. I couldn't find Windows, so I installed Ubuntu 11.04 on my laptop. Last time I had Ubuntu on it, it was not really compatible with laptop's configuration and I had a bit of problems trying to do normal tasks I used to do on Windows. Now I want to make sure that Windows and its drivers are gone so that I can try to install a newer version of Ubuntu or Windows. • Disable Thunderbird "failed to connect" notifications

  My network manager doesn't start until I log in, so for the first ten seconds or so after I login I have no Internet connection. The problem is that I have Thunderbird set to automatically start on login, so it helpfully tells me it "failed to connect" every time I log in. Also, my Internet connection isn't too reliable, so I sometimes get those messages even when I'm supposedly connected. Is there any way to disable these notifications, while still allowing the ones about new mail? • Are my other partitions safe from harm from an alpha/beta release?

  I am quite intrested in testing the latest alpha-3 of Ubuntu, however, performance in VirtualBox is slow and somewhat buggy (I know! It's an Alpha) - guest additions wern't installing, bad mouse intergration, etc. I would now like to test this release on my hard drive. But my main system (12.04) is also on this very same hard drive. Is this safe? Can the alpha touch my main partition? Are there any other risks?

What network configuration should the new Linux server have (both interfaces) in order to minimize the changes need in the network? tried to change R1 ip to 192.168.100.1 them add the server with FE0/0 192.168.100.1 and FE0/1 192.168.1.1 but looks cannot ping the original Router..

  I'm running a program on a linux server that will take days to complete. I'm launching it from my workstation from an SSH terminal, as this program is command-line only. I want to be able to do all of these : launch that program, redirect standard outputs to files, exit my SSH session without making this terminate the process. I thought about $ ./MyProg.csh -params -foo -bar </dev/null 1>~/out.log 2>~/err.log & However, the process is terminated the moment I close my SSH session. My workstation is running Windows XP, and I cannot guarantee its uptime over several days, which is required for the processing of my data on the Linux server. As you may have noted, my program requires to be launched from CSH. Is it possible to do this ? Thanks.

The resulting links should be independent from their prototypes and lead directly to their target objects. cp -s creates links to links that is not appropriate behavior. cp -s -L refuses to copy links to directories cp -s -L -r refuses to copy relative links to non-working directory What should I do?
