  • Does PHP *have* to serialize/unserialize session data between each HTTP request? Or is there a sett

    - by Pete Alvin
I think I understand why sessions are evil but for snappy client user experience I don't want to have to re-query the database on each HTTP request. (As a comparision, Java servlets can effortlessly keep tons of session objects in memory.) Can PHP be set to do this or does it have to serialize because it runs from CGI/FastCGI and therefore by definition is a new process each time a request comes in? I will be running PHP using LAMP.

  • Biggest command-line mistake?

    - by Peter Hilton
What is the most damage (of whatever kind) that you have ever caused with a single mistaken/mistyped/misguided command line? I deleted a production system database by mistake a while back, for example, but I was lucky (i.e. backed-up) and there was no permanent data loss, lost money, property damage etc. Most importantly (for votes), what do you do to make sure it will not ever happen again?

  • Howto monitor traffic between IIS and MSSQL

    - by kockiren
Hello @all, i try to check how much traffic flows between MSSQL Server and IIS Server in different Locations. There are 1 ipcop in every Location and i download the tcpdump file from one Firewall and search for DST=ipmssql and SRC=ipIIS but i did not find the ip from the Database Server. But there are traffic between both. Any suggestions why i did not find the IP Adress from the MSSQL Server? Is this an configuration failure in IPCop or is the Traffic between ISS and MSSQL so strange :-) Regards Rene

  • Can a BIND server be a slave to a non-BIND master DNS server?

    - by Michael Neale
If I have a master DNS that is not bind - can bind still slave to it? (ie does it use the DNS protocol or something else?). Kind of related - but do people still do this or do they use some other form of data replication to keep DNS records in sync to the slaves (ie file/database copying)? I would like to have the slaves refreshed as fast as possible so I am thinking normal slaving with is expiry/poll based might not be optimal?

  • Encrypt pdf files with mcrypt and php

    - by microchasm
I'm currently set up with a CentOS box that utilizes mcrypt to encrypt/decrypt data to/from the database. In my haste, I forgot that I also need a solution to encrypt files (primarily pdf, with a xls and txt file here and there). Is there a way to utilize mcrypt to encrypt pdf files? I understand the possibility of file_get_contents() with txt; is a similar solution available for other formats? Thanks!

  • Graphical MySQL tools

    - by Shlomo Shmai
Are there any good graphical tools (preferably free) for navigating a MySQL database? I find myself doing a lot of the same SQL queries to look at data in the tables. I would imagine there's a GUI for doing this that makes life easier. Any one know of such a thing? Thanks a lot.

  • Easy to use web-based reporting tool

    - by SuperFurryToad
I'm looking for recommendations for an easy to use reporting/business intelligence tool that can interface with an sql server or access database. It can be web-based or a desktop tool. Ideally it would be freeware or low cost, and easy to use for users who are not that technically savvy (below the level of someone who can generate reports and complicated queries in Access). Any tools I've seen so far (such as Crystal Reports) are either too expensive or too complicated to use for non-power users.

  • Log parser for ftp server

    - by Sergei
Can anyone suggest good log reporting software for Proftpd? I am looking for something at least as good as http://xferlogdb.sourceforge.net where log is fed into the database and dynamic web pages are built to retrieve historical data and statistics per user, time period and so on. Xferlogdb is very helpful , but unfortunately latest release is 2004

  • EBS with RAID0 (striping) and restoring snapshots

    - by grourk
We have a MySQL database on EC2 and are looking at the disk IO performance there. Currently we have a single EBS volume with XFS and take snapshots for backup. It seems that a lot of people have seen significant performance gains by striping across multiple EBS volumes with software RAID. If this is done, how does one take snapshots and ensure the consistency of the file system? It seems to me that restoring the file system from multiple snapshots could be tricky.

  • Does shared hosting hold some benefits over a VPS? [closed]

    - by John Nevermore
I was looking a for a windows host for my ASP.NET MVC app and the prices in softsyshosting looked very decent. However i fail to understand, why do they offer codename "Enterprise" Shared hosting at the same price point as the codename "Economy" VPS ? Enterprise Shared: http://www.softsyshosting.com/windows.aspx The First Economy VPS: http://www.softsyshosting.com/windows-vps.aspx Why would someone be willing to pay the same amount of money for 350GB less bandwith, less database storage, less disk space, no RDP control .. ?

  • JNDI Datasource definition in Tomcat 6.0

    - by romaintaz
I want to define a DataSource to an Oracle database on my Tomcat 6.0. So, in conf/server.xml (yes, I know that this DataSource will be available for all the webapps in Tomcat, but it's not a problem here), I've set this Resource: <GlobalNamingResources> <Resource name="hibernate/HibernateDS" auth="Container" type="javax.sql.DataSource" url="jdbc:oracle:thin:@myserver:1542:foo" username="foo" password="bar" driverClassName="oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver" maxActive="50" maxIdle="10" validationQuery="select 1 from dual"/> Then, in the web.xml of my application, I set a resource-ref element: <resource-ref> <description>Hibernate Datasource</description> <res-ref-name>hibernate/HibernateDS</res-ref-name> <res-type>javax.sql.DataSource</res-type> <res-auth>Container</res-auth> </resource-ref> Finally, as Hibernate is used to manage the database connection, I have a webapps/mywebapp/WEB-INF/classes/hibernate.cfg.xml that creates a session-factory using the JNDI DataSource: <hibernate-configuration> <session-factory> <property name="connection.datasource">java:comp/env/hibernate/HibernateDS</property> ... However, when I start my Tomcat server, I get an error that says it could not create the INFO [net.sf.hibernate.util.NamingHelper] JNDI InitialContext properties:{} INFO [net.sf.hibernate.connection.DatasourceConnectionProvider] Using datasource: java:comp/env/hibernate/HibernateDS INFO [net.sf.hibernate.transaction.TransactionFactoryFactory] Transaction strategy: net.sf.hibernate.transaction.JDBCTransactionFactory INFO [net.sf.hibernate.transaction.TransactionManagerLookupFactory] No TransactionManagerLookup configured (in JTA environment, use of process level read-write cache is not recommended) WARN [net.sf.hibernate.cfg.SettingsFactory] Could not obtain connection metadata org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.SQLNestedException: Cannot create JDBC driver of class '' for connect URL 'null' at org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSource.createDataSource(BasicDataSource.java:1150) at org.apache.tomcat.dbcp.dbcp.BasicDataSource.getConnection(BasicDataSource.java:880) at net.sf.hibernate.connection.DatasourceConnectionProvider.getConnection(DatasourceConnectionProvider.java:59) at net.sf.hibernate.cfg.SettingsFactory.buildSettings(SettingsFactory.java:84) at net.sf.hibernate.cfg.Configuration.buildSettings(Configuration.java:1172) ... • PostgreSQL encrypted backups

    - by Nikhil Gupte
Is it possible to ensure that dumps taken from a PostgreSQL db are always encrypted? The data in the database is highly sensitive and we cannot afford un-authorized personnel, including Sys Admins who need to backup the db, to access the actual data.

  • Is an NTBackup of a MySQL data directory reliable

    - by Justin Dearing
This question was asked on the MySQL forums in 2004 with no answers. I'm installing MySQL 5.0.x on a Windows 2003 Server for use with Drupal. I began to configure the backup with mysqldump when it occurred to me that an ntbackup taken using shadow copying should be reliable enough for backing up the database. Is there any flaw in my logic?
